progress
on strategic goals in fye 2011
We increased our service to the state through free or affordable access:
• More than $160,000 in free admission brought students from the most economically disadvantaged
areas of the state to the Clay Center on educational field trips.
• Enrollment in our Access to Excitement program more than doubled, giving more than 130 low-income
families the chance to spend quality time together at the Clay Center through a membership plan they
could afford.
• Active duty military personnel and their families were granted free museum admission for two straight
summers through our participation in the Blue Star Museums program.
• Our new military membership program provided a 25% discount on annual family memberships for
active duty, reserve and retired military personnel.
• We offered FREE programming and added new events:
• The Declaration of Independence made a one-day stop at the Clay Center on its 50-state
road trip across the country. In honor of our nation’s freedom, we offered free museum
admission to all visitors.
“We can’t thank you enough.
The kids had a blast. It was a
long ride for us, but everyone
said it was worth it. We look
forward to doing it with next
year’s class.”
– Ms. Tipton, teacher, Greenbrier County
• Thanks to the generosity of the West Virginia Humanities Council and our Collectors Club, we
offered a series of free lectures and symposia related to new art exhibits featuring artists,
curators and even a former astronaut turned painter.
• Families were introduced to rocketry, astronomy, earth science and more through our new
Kidstronomy program featuring space-related activities, interesting presentations for all
ages and stargazing in our portable planetarium.
clay center’s 10-year strategic goals
• Crowds continued to frequent our existing free programs. Second Saturdays at the Capitol
Market, Science Café at Taylor Books and Lunchtime Lectures gave the community a free
taste of art, science, culture and history.
• to serve all of WV through free and affordable access
• to bring our mission to communities throughout the state
• to provide world-class programming
• to form strategic alliances
• to secure our financial future
We brought programs to communities throughout the state:
•A group of sixteen teachers from Jackson, Wood, Pleasants, Fayette, Kanawha and Putnam counties
participated in the Center’s seventh annual Teacher Cadre – a three-day educator’s symposium, wherein
board certified and masters level teachers gathered to develop the curriculum and identify 21st Century
Learning Skills and content standards for our “Classrooms in the Clay Center” performances. Teachers in
the Cadre received funding to bring their students to at least one show.
• Students in Jackson, Kanawha, Pleasants, Putnam, Mercer, Wayne, Upshur, Lincoln, Wood, Harrison, Raleigh and Cabell counties, as well as kids in Boyd County in Kentucky and Jackson and Meigs counties in
Ohio, learned about astronomy, nutrition, earth science, chemical reactions and more from visiting Clay
Center educators through outreach presentations.
•Students in Wayne and Kanawha counties used technology to take virtual field trips to the Clay Center
and interact with educators through our distance learning program.
•Budding musicians in Clay, Lincoln, Mason, Mingo and Kanawha counties received free instruments
and music lessons through the Clay Community Arts music outreach program, and some accomplished
students played their original compositions at local fairs and festivals.
•Students at Lincoln County’s Guyan Valley Middle School spent a week cutting, sanding, painting and
assembling a one-of-a-kind mobile structure in their school’s courtyard with the help of Clay Center staff
and artist-in-residence Kevin Reese.

We provided world-class programming:
•By splitting our Clay Center Presents performance season into two series, we were able to bring in even
more phenomenal and diverse acts including Sheryl Crow, Jason Mraz, Steve Martin with the Steep Canyon
Rangers, Tony Bennett, Huey Lewis and the News, Peter Frampton, Dionne Warwick, Jackson Browne and
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.
•Former astronaut and artist Alan Bean gave a free lecture on his space travels and related paintings to a
packed house in the Walker Theatre in conjunction with the visiting Smithsonian exhibit “NASA | ART: 50
Years of Exploration.”
•In response to visitor requests, we opened a new science gallery featuring traveling interactive exhibits
that provide new experiences every few months. The Mylan Explore-atory welcomed thousands of visitors
to exhibits about toys, space travel and crime solving.
“My new favorite place is the Clay Center! The venue is so perfect for a concert.
Not too big, made every seat in the house seem like a great seat. We came all
the way from Northern Virginia and it was worth the trip. Thanks Clay Center. My
husband and I had such a great time! Can’t wait to go back!”
– Danielle , Northern Virginia
We formed strategic alliances:
•We partnered with The Charleston Ballet on a hugely successful fundraising gala, Carnevale. Many guests
said this lively party was the best fundraising event they’d ever attended in Charleston.
•We moved our annual Summer Fun Day to the opening weekend of FestivALL and teamed up with West
Side Main Street to provide free family entertainment throughout the city. A trolley transported guests
between the Clay Center and West Side Main Street’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social, bringing new
visitors to each event.
•Students from Piedmont Elementary worked with us to plant an organic vegetable garden on Clay Center
grounds. Even better – all of the lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, squash and other veggies were donated to
Manna Meal to help feed people in need.
•The great outdoors have become a larger part of our programming through a partnership with Kanawha
State Forest. Children and families went on hikes, learned how to cook with a campfire and got up close
and personal with some native critters in our outdoor programs.
•We partnered with 99 sponsors who provided underwriting support for our programs, events and
performances in exchange for valuable public relations and marketing benefits and VIP privileges.
•Other partnerships included

We made great strides
in achieving financial security:
•Carnevale, our signature fundraising event hosted by
“Friends of Clay”, brought in nearly 400 people and netted
$84,000 in its inaugural year. This dynamic fundraiser will
continue to provide annual support while attracting new
patrons and donors year after year.
•We laid the groundwork for a strong future in planned giving
with the creation of the Clay Legacy Society, providing
recognition for individuals who choose to include the Clay
Center in their wills or other deferred gifts.
•We expanded our membership program, acquiring 509 new
memberships and renewing nearly 1,500. We also rolled out
an automatic renewal option– a major step in increasing
member retention rates.
•We utilized NIP tax credits to leverage $123,000 in donations
– approximately 3.5 times the amount of our tax credit
allotment.
•We increased the endowment by $1.5 million this
year, bringing the value of the Clay Center’s permanent
endowment to $32,201,936, as of June 30, 2011.
•We met our contributed operating income goal.
•We controlled operating expenses.
•We exceeded our earned income goal:
Per capita income for admissions exceeded
projections.
Performance ticket sales exceeded projections
for headliners, season performers, Woody Hawley
Concert series and Broadway.
thank you
To our many partners and friends, our heartfelt thanks.
You are a hero to the thousands of West Virginians who visit us each year.
Endowment
The generous Corporation, Foundation and Individual donors listed here have made gifts of $1,000 or more to the Clay Center’s permanent endowment that will help eliminate
museum admission fees for school groups, enhance our educational programs and performances and broaden our community outreach programs to bring the enjoyment and
wonder of the arts and sciences to the underserved throughout our region.

Operating Support
Each year, gifts from friends and supporters help meet the costs of providing the Center’s many programs, exhibits and performances to the state and region while helping to
ensure that all West Virginia children get to experience the wonder and excitement of the Clay Center. The Center gratefully recognizes these generous donors who provided vital
operating support at or above $500 during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.

“Thank you for not making us pay for our trip. It was
fantastic. I liked the geysers and the laser harp. Also I
liked the statue in the parking lot. I learned some things
too. I learned some constellations and I learned how
many bones are in the body. Even though it was my first
time, I had a blast.”
