TORCH DECEMBER 2012 IT’S TIME LIBERTY NATIONAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY 2013 insight It’s Time What a great year! It has been such a privilege to work with all of you toward making Liberty National the best it can be. I know this year has had some change and even a little uncertainty, but I think you have taken it in stride and have had the flexibility and determination to get us going in the right direction. For that, and for all of your success, I thank you. 2012 truly has been a standout year, but now I want to focus on something far more important – the present. Recently, I had sort of a revelation … an epiphany. As I celebrated my 60th birthday, it dawned on me that while I am proud of the accomplishments I’ve made in my life, there are still things I want to do. I need to make sure I embrace my time on Roger Smith President and Chief Executive Officer 2 - torch December 2012 it’s time this earth more than ever. I need to make sure I get to work on achieving any and all of the remaining goals I have in my life, right now. I hope you understand the urgency I’m talking about. Every moment is precious, and any moment wasted is one we can never get back. While last year I asked you to take a leap of faith, this year, I’m asking you to take it up a notch and live life every day with this motto in mind: it’s time. It sounds simple enough, but when you really grasp its meaning and apply it to your life, this expression can have quite a profound impact on everything you do. One of Merriam-Webster’s definitions for ‘time’ is “an opportune or suitable moment.” What I’m telling you is, now – today, tomorrow, this month, this year – is an opportune or suitable moment for you to take your career and transform it into something incredible. And yes, it does have to be right now … because hesitation brings nothing but wasted time, and wasted time means wasted opportunity. So what do I mean by taking action right now? I mean we have the opportunity to make our careers and our Company the best in the market by potentially bringing 20,000 new jobs to this struggling economy. Right now it’s time to lift someone up who has been laid off or who has been working in a dead end job for which he’s overqualified. It’s time to offer some financial protection to families, to help that grieving widow and make sure her family can keep their house and her kids can afford to get a college education. It’s time the spotlight shines on you and the efforts you contribute to the success of our Company, our customers, and our economy. It’s time to bring new life to your Branches and to ensure our Company remains a place for those willing to work hard and make good lives for themselves. Remember, Liberty National is the home of the Opportunity of a Lifetime, so let’s make that a reality every day. I have every confidence LNL will reach $100 million per year in four years. But the clock is ticking; the zero hour is here. The time to take action is now. Keep in mind tomorrow is never guaranteed … but today is. What I’m telling you is, now – today, tomorrow, this month, this year – is an opportune or suitable moment for you to take your career and transform it into something incredible. It’s a critical time for all of us here, but it’s also an exciting one. So let’s all say goodbye to any delays, excuses, or hesitations that do nothing but impede our immediate progress toward the next great thing in our lives. I hope you’re all ready, because right now, it’s time. NEWS Published by Liberty National Life Insurance Company for the dissemination of information to its Agents. True leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand. 2. T he stronger the relationship and connection between individuals, the more likely the follower will want to help the leader. 3. Six keys to connection include the following: • Personal Authenticity • Relationship • Approachability • Mutual Respect • Belief in People • Meaning & Depth Do you know people who exemplify Maxwell’s Law of Connection? Perhaps you have that kind of relationship with your parents, a coach, or your Branch Manager. Isn’t it your connected relationship that makes you want to please your parents (no matter how old you are), your coach, or your Branch Manager … that make you want to help them or be like them? You can form a connection with almost anyone, whether it’s family, others in your Branch, prospects, customers, or social contacts. You just have to be open to it. And the more open you are, the deeper the connection becomes on every level. Open your mind and heart … and the world is yours! it’s time torch December 2012 - 9 LNL Branch Managers Help Clean the World The Liberty National November Branch Manager Meeting was held November 26-29 at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. During their free time, 80 Branch Managers, guests, and Home Office personnel rolled up their sleeves and got their hands clean with a Closer to the Heart project benefitting Clean The World. Each day, 9,000 children around the world under the age of 5 die from preventable hygiene-related illnesses, specifically pneumonia and diarrheal disease. That’s more than 3.2 million children each year – more than AIDS and malaria combined. Each month, hundreds of thousands of hotels across the world discard tons of slightly-used soap and shampoo. Founded in 2009, Clean The World’s mission is to collect and recycle soap and shampoo products discarded daily by the hospitality industry and distribute these and other donated hygiene products to impoverished people to prevent the millions of deaths caused by hygienerelated illnesses every day. Clean The World carries out its mission by collecting, sorting, processing, and recycling discarded soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from participating hospitality partners, and delivering them to domestic homeless shelters, impoverished countries, and places where natural disasters have compromised sanitary conditions. As the world’s first high-volume soap recycler, Clean The World has put more than 11 million soap bars and 325,000 pounds of shampoo and conditioner back into human use, eliminating more than 750 tons of needless waste from landfills. 10 - torch December 2012 it’s time Liberty National volunteers worked in two-hour shifts at Clean The World’s Las Vegas Recycling Operation Center, separating soaps and bottles into separate containers. Kevin Williams, the Center’s director, said the time LNL spent volunteering saved the sparsely-employed facility six months worth of work! After the shifts, LNL President and CEO Roger Smith and Executive Vice President and Chief Agency Office Steve DiChiaro presented Clean The World with a $4,450 donation. Additional donations are still coming in and will be sent to the organization once the collection is complete. Matching funds from LNL’s parent Company, Torchmark Corporation, will double the total amount of the donation. Launched in April 2012, Closer to the Heart is a long-term humanitarian project extending Torchmark Corporation Affiliates’ commitment to the community by making financial and service contributions to programs that provide hands-on assistance in the communities we visit. It also means embracing change. During my three years as a Branch Manager at Liberty National Life Insurance Company, I’ve overcome many challenges by keeping a positive attitude, staying open-minded, and, most importantly, making changes. In the beginning of 2012, we, as a Company, experienced a major change in the way we conduct business. I’ll be the first to admit I was initially anxious about the change in leadership. Sometimes it’s hard to venture out of your comfort zone to see the bigger picture, but I’m sure glad I did! July was a month of many changes in my career. The lease of my old office with Liberty National was about to expire, and even though I was excited about moving into a new office, I was also nervous about the expenses I was about to incur. Knowing that this time around I’d be the one choosing where I’d be conducting business, my excitement outweighed my fear. My vision was to find an attractive, inviting new office that would warmly welcome new recruits and clients. I was fortunate to find just that. In addition to changing my office location, I also made the decision to become an Independent Branch Manager. There were several factors I considered when making this decision, but the 10-year Vested Renewal Schedule turned out to be the perfect choice for me. Although significant, these changes only further fueled my desire for change. That’s right, halfway through 2012 and I was just getting started with the Tampa Bay Branch’s makeover. In October, I visited one of Liberty National’s sister companies in Chicago. During this visit, my mind was going 100MPH – what I experienced in Chicago I might have heard from others in the past, but seeing it was completely different. I finally had the opportunity to observe what it takes to run a productive and effective organization. This visit made me realize that I had created a culture of average thinkers in my own organization. Suddenly, my perspectives of my role and the role of a business owner collided, opening my eyes to the true meaning of what it takes to be an Agency Owner. possible. Hiring an administrative assistant was the only way to alleviate me of all the administrative work I was performing on a daily basis. I’m now able to spend more time with my Agents, AUMs, and UMs, helping them develop and improve their leadership skills. It’s important to create a core group of leaders within your Branch, and to spend quality time with them to ensure their success and satisfaction. I’ve overcome many challenges by keeping a positive attitude, staying open-minded, and, most importantly, making changes. Another significant change I made was in our Branch schedule. Our Agency meetings had been too early, which didn’t allow me enough time to meet with my core. By changing the time of these meetings, I’ve opened up time to role play before our recruiting sessions, discuss production, set objectives, discuss codes, and develop leadership. Our meetings are also more upbeat and enthusiastic now. We incorporate music, motivational videos, and inspirational stories in every meeting. I’ve created a weekly contest and reward the winner with cash every Monday. I’ve found this is a great way to get my Agents ready for a productive and successful week. With all these changes in place, I am creating a culture of winners. I want my Branch to excel in everything they do and I want my team members to live abundant, fulfilling lives simply by doing what we do best – helping others. As motivational speaker Tony Robbins once said, “By changing nothing, nothing changes.” Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – It’s Time to better your Branch and your career. I’m sure glad I did. Back in Tampa Bay, my first decision was to hire a full-time administrative assistant. My time as an Agency Owner is valuable and my goal was to develop as many Managers as it’s time torch December 2012 - 15 official agent standings: 2012 production November 2. Charles Brown Jr. 1. I’m psyched about our 2013 Company theme. IT’S TIME … short and sweet, but with a magnitude of potential for us as individuals and as a Company. In 2012, we all took a Leap of Faith, and in 2013, IT’S TIME to take that Leap of Faith to the next level, to turn what might be into what is. IT’S TIME to stop worrying if we can do something and simply realize we can do ANYTHING — and do it extremely well. When I look ahead to 2013, I see GROWTH in our mindset that will result in growth in personal production, commission earnings, bonus earnings, size and number of Branches, overall Company development, and for many of you, net worth and wealth. We made it through our year of transition in 2012, and now IT’S TIME to realize we have NO LIMITS! Anything and everything is possible. Roger and I realize to successfully lead you, we need to know and understand each of you and your teams. During the first quarter of 2013, we are traveling to many Liberty National offices to ‘Share the Vision’ and learn more about you and how we can help you be successful. We understand that Branches are like the individuals within them … all different. What works well for one, may or may not work for another. But one question we will ask at every Branch is “What’s your passion number?” What production number must you reach? What production number excites you and your team members? Our goal will be to provide you with ideas that you can put into place to reach that passion number. Remember, given both your ability and desire to reach that goal, we will help you get there. Growth starts with recruiting. Grow your team, and you grow your Branch. Expand your mindset and it has a domino effect on the rest of the team. Once you open your mind to new ideas, your mind can’t shrink back. But whatever your current mindset is, it’s probably not big enough. So throw aside preconceived notions and open yourself to any and all possibilities. IT’S TIME for Liberty National to have the explosive growth for which we’re positioning. IT’S TIME to push our limits to see how far we can go. Sure, you can pay your bills selling Liberty National products, but you can build your wealth selling the Liberty National opportunity. And that’s what we want for all of you — Agents, AUMS, Unit Managers, and Branch Managers. You were given the opportunity of a lifetime, and you should share that opportunity with others. Pay it forward, so others can pay it forward too. IT’S TIME to push our limits and see how far we can go. What can you do immediately to push your limits? Hire the right people and do it in the right way. Make sure they have a realistic idea of what it means to join the Liberty National team, and that they know upfront what is expected. Get a commitment for success from every recruit. Help them realize at the beginning that being a Liberty National Agent is much more than just having a job. It’s a way of life and a career that can reap rewards beyond one’s wildest dreams. The status quo doesn’t cut it at Liberty National, because our Company is a living, breathing, evolving entity. Be open to change, because if you’re not changing, you’re not growing. I’m excited about the future of our great Company. We made a worthy start in 2012, but we all know the BEST is yet to come. it’s time torch December 2012 - 23 P.O. Box 8080 • McKinney, TX 75070 It’s time. Your time. Use it wisely.
