Welcome
Immerse yourself in the spring of 2016 with a
festival laden in a rich variety of impressive
gardens and events all set around a stunning
Mount Taranaki.
With mostly private gardens opening their gates for
only ten days a year to the public, we pride ourselves
in offering those with a passion for gardens a unique
opportunity to indulge.
This year’s events programme will touch on food, the
environment, architecture and interior design and will
be presented alongside our richly assorted gardens, to
offer up a tasteful experience for all. From workshops
to guest speakers, tours and guided walks, there is
something for everyone. Check the events planner (pg
64) to see what is happening so you don’t miss out!
While on your journey be sure to discover this year’s
Landscape Design Project, Lost Paradise. This
beautiful and fairy-tale like installation, designed by
renowned New Plymouth landscaper Mike Mansfield,
invites the viewer to use all of their senses and truly
ponder their view of what paradise means to them.
Find out more on page 52.
In keeping with the continual growth and variety the
festival has to offer, 2016 sees us excitedly welcome
ten new gardens to our fold – you can find these listed
on page six.
We would like to welcome all new comers and thank
our supporters for their contributions. You make it
possible for us to showcase our dynamic array of
private and public gardens to New Zealand and the
world.
We hope you learn something new and discover places

WAITARA
MUST-DO EXPERIENCES INCLUDE:
Waitara’s most impressive feature is the
mighty Waitara River, which cuts a formidable
path through the heart of this historical town.
Located 15km northeast of New Plymouth
and home to over 6,000 people, it is the
largest town in North Taranaki. The banks of
the Waitara River hosted a significant battle
during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s,
which involved over 2,000 men. In present
times, Waitara is now known as the energy
hub of the region with the giant Methanex
plant sitting on its outskirts, which produces
export methanol.
• Ride the rails from Waitara to Lepperton on
the Waitara Branch Line, Taranaki’s first
ever railway line. Ph 06 754 4973
www.waitararailwaypres.tripod.com
• Clematis lovers should not pass through
Waitara without visiting Yaku Nursery, with
over 40 years’ experience growing clematis.
278 Tikorangi Rd. Ph 06 754 4500.
• Waitara’s local Bin Inn boasts an extensive
range of goods, quality wholefoods and
specialty grocery items. 61 McLean St,
Waitara.
• Mud Bay Café is a friendly country café
located in the seaside village of Urenui.
Enjoy a bite in the café’s warm and
welcoming ambience. 18 Ngakoti St, Urenui.
Ph 06 752 3881.
• Walk over the Bertrand Road suspension
bridge that crosses the Waitara River,
linking Huirangi, near Lepperton and
Tikorangi. The original bridge was built in
1897, and rebuilt in 1927 after damage was
caused by flooding (using an adapted form
of the original design).
• Visit the Inglewood Fun Ho! Toy Museum &
Factory, which makes cast metal toys and
houses over 3,000 toys and dioramas!

INGLEWOOD
Inglewood is a quaint town 16km southeast
of New Plymouth, nestled under the
impressive form of Mt Taranaki. The town
boasts a population of over 3,000, servicing a
predominantly dairy farming region. As well
as laying claim to eight buildings classified as
New Zealand Historical Places it is also home
to the oldest remaining railway station on its
original site in New Zealand. While this town
may be small in size, it is huge in character
and reputation.

8. Te Kainga Marire
New Zealand Native
Garden Paradise
15 Spencer Place, New Plymouth
Valda Poletti & David Clarkson
Te Kainga Marire is the only private native garden
sanctuary in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden
of International Significance. Te Kainga Marire’s
(translated ‘peaceful encampment’) point of difference
lies in the natural plant associations that evoke a feeling
of the real New Zealand. This native plant paradise was
developed in 1972 from clay wasteland. Keen outdoor
adventurers, the owners wanted a bird friendly garden
designed around the ecological groupings they had
observed in the wild. New Zealand native grasses,
climbers, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees have
been carefully nurtured around rustic fences, a pond, a
colonial bush hut and cool fern filled whare. Shy tui now
regularly fly into the garden to feed.
Enjoy a guided ‘Interactive Sensory Experience’ tour
with the knowledgeable owners.
This garden features in the BBC series Around the
World in 80 Gardens, first screened in 2008.

21. Pukeiti
2290 Carrington Rd, New Plymouth
Taranaki Regional Council
Pukeiti houses a world-class rhododendron collection
uniquely nestled in Taranaki rainforest. It was
established in 1951 by Douglas Cook of Eastwoodhill
and 25 founding members of the Pukeiti Rhododendron
Trust who all had a passion for growing rhododendrons.
Experience an explosion of colour as hundreds of
rhododendrons and azaleas flower against a lush
backdrop of forested volcanic ranges, mountain stream
and birdsong. There are many kilometres of tracks for
either a garden walk or a longer adventure into the
rainforest. In particular the Rhododendron Stroll, which
includes the beautifully scented Loderis, is a treat for
the sense during spring.
The Taranaki Regional Council’s upgrade is in the third
year of the five-year development project. Due to this
stage of the development, we will be providing a pop-up
kiosk for our visitor’s convenience. The Founders Kiosk
will be open daily throughout the Garden Spectacular
for light refreshments from 10am to 4pm.

As South Taranaki’s main hub, this bustling
town services the wider farming region of over
11,000 people. In Ma-ori, Hawera means ‘the
burnt place’ or ‘breath of fire’, a seemingly
suitable name after the town had a triple
dose of devastating blazes in 1884, 1888 and
1912. To make the fire-fighting easier, a large
water tower was built in 1914, which watches
over the town to this day and remains one of
Taranaki’s best-known heritage landmarks.
Hawera has grown in recent years to support
the surrounding farms and now boasts the
largest dairy factory complex in the world
called Whareroa.
• Tawhiti Museum is widely acclaimed as
one the most innovative museums in New

Eltham • Stratford
ELTHAM
MUST-DO EXPERIENCES INCLUDE:
Eltham is known as the cradle of the Taranaki
dairy industry (the co-operative system in
particular), and for being the one place in New
Zealand that manufactured rennet, which
is important in cheese making. It was also
the first place to export butter to England.
Settlement began in Eltham in the 1870s with
blocks of densely forested land being taken up.
A profusion of sawmilling companies cleared
the district, which when grassed was found
to be ideal for dairy farming. Eltham has more
vintage shops per capita than any other town in
New Zealand.
• A visit to the breath-taking Dawson’s Falls
located at the top of Manaia Rd, Kaponga.
The falls are a short 10-minute walk from the
carpark.
STRATFORD
This town is a tribute to the great bard
William Shakespeare, named after
his birthplace in Warwickshire. The
town features 67 streets named after
characters from an assortment of
Shakespeare’s plays. The town
is nestled against the eastern
shoulder of Mt Taranaki and
the near 9,000 residents are
accustomed to a snowfall
or two during winter.
Stratford is also home to
the only Glockenspiel clock
tower in New Zealand.
The town is also the
starting point of the
Forgotten World Highway,
the route to Taumarunui
which follows ancient
Ma-ori trade routes and
pioneering tracks.

Lost Paradise
On any given day there is shelter from the world in
the Totara Dell at Pukekura Park – it provides peace,
tranquillity and a quiet protective shield, almost like a
gentle embrace. It is here we find home to a stand of
ancient Totara trees in a warm sheltered site guarded
from prevailing winds.
These magnificent trees represent and embody the
true spectacle of nature and its ability to host, share
and thrive with a myriad of lifeforms within lifeforms.
It is the opulence of this section of park that gives it
its uniqueness and provides the inspiration that is Lost
Paradise.
52
For many people using the park, these epiphytic
life forms are a constant source of joy and wonder;
however, they can go unnoticed in our busy day-to-day
lives. How often do we take the time to look up and see
something new?
The goal of this project is to simply embellish further
something that already has incredible beauty creating
a paradise-like space for all to take the time to enjoy.
Lost Paradise will invite the viewer to use all of their
senses and truly ponder their view of what paradise
means to them.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN
PROJECT LAUNCH
Lost Paradise project designer Michael Mansvelt first
fostered his love of beautiful gardens and properties at
Tupare, the home of his apprenticeship. From here he
went to Sydney to work as a landscape designer for a
prominent firm enabling his own distinct flare to grow.
In 2001 Mike returned to New Zealand and started
Plantation Design House. Soon after, he was discovered
by TVNZ for ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘Mucking In’. It was
around this time that Mike expanded into interior house
design, and garden maintenance.
Supported by the TSB Community Trust, this project
will be available for the entire family to enjoy during
the course of the festival. Don’t miss the launch of Lost
Paradise and the chance to hear from the local landscape
artist about his inspiration: “Paradise is an abstract state
of mind, an ideal for many but a goal perhaps for all.”

Smart Planting
for Healthy Bees
Linda Newstrom-Lloyd
Canadian botanist Dr. Linda Newstrom-Lloyd has
a passion for interpreting flowers – how they live
and what they do, when and why. Her PhD studies
at University of California in Berkeley focused on
pollination by bees. For Postdoctoral studies, she
turned to the analysis of flowering patterns. After
arriving in New Zealand in 1994, she started broad
scale studies on native and exotic bees. This led to a
study of the flowers that honey bees love best for their
pollen and nectar resources in New Zealand. Thus
Trees for Bees NZ was born in 2009.
Malnutrition is one of the threats to honey bee colonies
along with pests, diseases and pesticides. Lack of bee
forage is something we can solve simply by planting
best bee plants in gardens, on farms, and on public
land. Gardeners can make a big difference to keep our
bees healthy and strong by planting superior bee forage
plants everywhere.
Join Linda for the opportunity to learn how to interpret
flower structures in relation to types of bees at gardenbased demonstrations. Discover what you can do to
help save the humble, but hardworking honey bee!

Garden Speaker Series
PROPAGATING, GARDENING TIPS
& HANGING BASKETS
SEED KEEPER
An informative workshop with Jenny Oakley
Roebuck Farm in Omata is a thriving farmlet. As well
as maintaining a large bio-intensive garden focused
on seed production, Jodi manages a flock of sheep
using management intensive grazing to improve the
land and teaches and consults on bio-intensive garden
development projects in New Zealand, Australia
and the US. Having been mentored by bio-intensive
gardening pioneer John Jeavons, Jodi is almost
certainly Australasia’s foremost expert on the topic.
Jodi is a humble, quietly spoken person and yet behind
his gentle exterior lays a formidable knowledge and
skill base that he will be sharing with visitors during
the festival.
Join festival stalwart Jenny Oakley who runs her own
excellent on-site plant nursey. Jenny has a Bachelor of
Amenity Horticulture, is a Trustee of the New Zealand
Gardens Trust and is on the garden assessment team
for the festival. She does regular speaking events
around the region and has accomplished a good deal
of commercial garden design and maintenance in her
career.
Jenny’s garden has developed a certain style reflecting
her formal training in horticulture and landscape
design and the garden became a Garden of National
Significance in 2005.
Jenny will demonstrate how to create hanging baskets,
share gardening tips and how propagating plants
is an inexpensive and easy way to get new plants
from plants you already have. (This asexual means
of reproduction produces a plant that is genetically
identical to its parent).
So if you are in Taranaki for the festival don’t miss one
of her workshops. She holds them in her garden, which
is a joy in itself to experience.

Polyfaces
A FILM TO INSPIRE
AND CREATE CHANGE
Joel Salatin says “as the problems of the world
become more and more complex, the solutions become
clear and simple.”
One Australian family spend their life savings and
travel to the USA, spending four years documenting
a style of farming that will help change the fate of
humanity.
Set amidst the stunning Shenandoah Valley in
northern Virginia, ‘Polyface Farm’ is led by the
“world’s most innovative farmer” (Time Magazine)
and uses no chemicals and feeds over 6,000 families,
many restaurants and food outlets within a three hour
foodshed of their farm.
‘Polyfaces’ is a joyful film about connecting to the land,
community and producing food that works with nature,
not against it. Using the symbiotic relationships of
animals and their natural functions, the family produces
high quality, nutrient-dense products.
This film shows how they regenerate their landscapes,
communities, local economies and customers’ health.
This model is being replicated throughout a global
village, proving that we can provide quality produce
without depleting the planet.

embarked on the big ‘OE’ to London where he worked

After traveling, Mike and his then-to-be wife, Belinda,
moved to Ireland, again heading the kitchen of a small
luxury hotel called Dunbrody Country House. During
their time there they earned the prestige of Conde Nast
“World Small Hotel of the Year”.
They returned to New Zealand, and in 2004 Molten
opened its doors. Its ever-changing contemporary
European style menu, combined with the freshest
ingredients, soon became the leader of suburban
dining.
Following the success of Molten, Liquid Molten a
wine bar (next door) opened its doors. This excited the
market with its fresh small plates of food, fantastic
cocktails in a funky New York inspired fit out. They
sold Molten and Liquid Molten in 2011 to pursue
new adventures and spend more time with their first
daughter Hazel. They now have another daughter, Ivy.
Mike fronted TVNZ’s top rating show The Food Truck,
recreating Kiwis favourite foods in a healthy, tasty and
fast way. His next television show was called Family
Recipes, where Mike put his spin on a favourite family
dish and then the family judges whose was best.
Recently, you will recognise Mike as the food host of
TVNZ’s Kiwi Living, which screens on Friday nights at
7.30pm on TV One. It is a lifestyle show that covers
food, fashion, animals, interior design, travel, garden

TUPARE GARDENS
Winter Journey: The Magnolias of Tupare
by Tara Jahn-Werner
Winter Journey is the second in a series of
photographs highlighting Tupare through the seasons.
The magnificent magnolia trees in the North Garden,
Russell Avenue and base of the Zig Zag walk are
particularly eye-catching in winter. The elegance and
beauty of their flowers provide a sharp contrast to the
austerity of surrounding branches.
Tara has focused on the magnolias’ introspective
simplicity and directness. Using a small Leica digital
camera she photographed them in situ, using natural
light during different times of the day to highlight their
extensive spectrum of pinks.
Austerity mixed with opulent beauty of individual
blooms brought to mind the music of Schubert,
especially his song-cycle Winterreise – Winter Journey
– a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano composed
towards the end of his tragically short life.
The exhibition has been inspired
by the emotional intensity of this
music, where a barren winter
landscape mirrors Schubert’s
own feelings. Indeed the song
cycle has been described as an
allegorical journey of the heart.

KINA NZ DESIGN & ART SPACE
Life is a Garden by Rebecca Phillips & Di
Conway
Life is a Garden is a collection of paintings and ceramic
works from two Wellington artists Rebecca Phillips and
Di Conway.
Rebecca Phillips explores the fragility of life through
her paintings of flowers – a common object of beauty.
Inspired by traditional interior floral patterns, Phillips
uses flat shapes of colour to construct her paintings;
paring back the flowers until they are the essence of
themselves.
Di Conway will exhibit her “Roly” stoneware women
in different postures and stances all with the garden in
mind. For Di the garden is about colour, smell and touch,
but mostly shapes and the space around shapes.
Rebecca will bring the colour and Di the touch, your own
imagination the smell.
