Pukeiti 2290 Carrington Rd, New Plymouth Taranaki Regional Council Pukeiti houses a world-class rhododendron collection uniquely nestled in Taranaki rainforest. It was established in 1951 by Douglas Cook of Eastwoodhill and 25 founding members of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust who all had a passion for growing rhododendrons. Experience an explosion of colour as hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas flower against a lush backdrop of forested volcanic ranges, mountain stream and birdsong. There are many kilometres of tracks for either a garden walk or a longer adventure into the rainforest. In particular the Rhododendron Stroll, which includes the beautifully scented Loderis, is a treat for the sense during spring. The Taranaki Regional Council’s upgrade is in the third year of the five-year development project. Due to this stage of the development, we will be providing a pop-up kiosk for our visitor’s convenience. It is here we find home to a stand of ancient Totara trees in a warm sheltered site guarded from prevailing winds. These magnificent trees represent and embody the true spectacle of nature and its ability to host, share and thrive with a myriad of lifeforms within lifeforms. It is the opulence of this section of park that gives it its uniqueness and provides the inspiration that is Lost Paradise. 52 For many people using the park, these epiphytic life forms are a constant source of joy and wonder; however, they can go unnoticed in our busy day-to-day lives. How often do we take the time to look up and see something new? The goal of this project is to simply embellish further something that already has incredible beauty creating a paradise-like space for all to take the time to enjoy. Lost Paradise will invite the viewer to use all of their senses and truly ponder their view of what paradise means to them. TSB STADIUM Parking Lost Paradise LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT LAUNCH Lost Paradise project designer Michael Mansvelt first fostered his love of beautiful gardens and properties at Tupare, the home of his apprenticeship. From here he went to Sydney to work as a landscape designer for a prominent firm enabling his own distinct flare to grow. In 2001 Mike returned to New Zealand and started Plantation Design House. Soon after, he was discovered by TVNZ for ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘Mucking In’. It was around this time that Mike expanded into interior house design, and garden maintenance. Supported by the TSB Community Trust, this project will be available for the entire family to enjoy during the course of the festival. Don’t miss the launch of Lost Paradise and the chance to hear from the local landscape artist about his inspiration: “Paradise is an abstract state of mind, an ideal for many but a goal perhaps for all.” DATE/TIME Thurs 27 Oct, 5.30pm VENUE Totara Dell, off Mason Drive from Rogan Street, New Plymouth BOOKING Festival Office, Cnr Powderham & Brougham Sts, New Plymouth, Ph 06 759 8412 Bookings essential. ADMISSION Free event 53 Smart Planting for Healthy Bees Linda Newstrom-Lloyd Canadian botanist Dr. Linda Newstrom-Lloyd has a passion for interpreting flowers – how they live and what they do, when and why. Her PhD studies at University of California in Berkeley focused on pollination by bees. For Postdoctoral studies, she turned to the analysis of flowering patterns. After arriving in New Zealand in 1994, she started broad scale studies on native and exotic bees. This led to a study of the flowers that honey bees love best for their pollen and nectar resources in New Zealand. Thus Trees for Bees NZ was born in 2009. Malnutrition is one of the threats to honey bee colonies along with pests, diseases and pesticides. Lack of bee forage is something we can solve simply by planting best bee plants in gardens, on farms, and on public land. Gardeners can make a big difference to keep our bees healthy and strong by planting superior bee forage plants everywhere. Join Linda for the opportunity to learn how to interpret flower structures in relation to types of bees at gardenbased demonstrations. Discover what you can do to help save the humble, but hardworking honey bee! 54 EVENT 1 DATE/TIME Sat 29 Oct, 10.30am – 12 noon VENUE Magnolia Grove, 6 Mahoetahi Rd, Waitara BOOKING Festival Office, Cnr Brougham & Powderham Sts, New Plymouth, Ph 06 759 8412 Bookings essential. Polyfaces A FILM TO INSPIRE AND CREATE CHANGE Joel Salatin says “as the problems of the world become more and more complex, the solutions become clear and simple.” One Australian family spend their life savings and travel to the USA, spending four years documenting a style of farming that will help change the fate of humanity. Set amidst the stunning Shenandoah Valley in northern Virginia, ‘Polyface Farm’ is led by the “world’s most innovative farmer” (Time Magazine) and uses no chemicals and feeds over 6,000 families, many restaurants and food outlets within a three hour foodshed of their farm. ‘Polyfaces’ is a joyful film about connecting to the land, community and producing food that works with nature, not against it. Using the symbiotic relationships of animals and their natural functions, the family produces high quality, nutrient-dense products. This film shows how they regenerate their landscapes, communities, local economies and customers’ health. This model is being replicated throughout a global village, proving that we can provide quality produce without depleting the planet. The magnificent magnolia trees in the North Garden, Russell Avenue and base of the Zig Zag walk are particularly eye-catching in winter. The elegance and beauty of their flowers provide a sharp contrast to the austerity of surrounding branches. Tara has focused on the magnolias’ introspective simplicity and directness. Using a small Leica digital camera she photographed them in situ, using natural light during different times of the day to highlight their extensive spectrum of pinks. Austerity mixed with opulent beauty of individual blooms brought to mind the music of Schubert, especially his song-cycle Winterreise – Winter Journey – a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano composed towards the end of his tragically short life. The exhibition has been inspired by the emotional intensity of this music, where a barren winter landscape mirrors Schubert’s own feelings. Indeed the song cycle has been described as an allegorical journey of the heart. Rebecca Phillips explores the fragility of life through her paintings of flowers – a common object of beauty. Inspired by traditional interior floral patterns, Phillips uses flat shapes of colour to construct her paintings; paring back the flowers until they are the essence of themselves. Di Conway will exhibit her “Roly” stoneware women in different postures and stances all with the garden in mind. For Di the garden is about colour, smell and touch, but mostly shapes and the space around shapes. Rebecca will bring the colour and Di the touch, your own imagination the smell.
