Glenwood Hot Springs is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, between Aspen and Vail, 165 miles west of Denver and 90 miles east of Grand Junction on Interstate 70 off exit 116 at 401 North River Street. Glenwood Hot Springs 2013, Glenwood Springs, CO… Established in 1888, Glenwood Hot Springs includes the largest mineral hot springs pool in the world, the Spa of the Rockies, a 107-room Lodge, the health-based Athletic Club, a retail Sport Shop, the poolside Grill, and a challenging miniature golf course. Situated next to the Colorado River and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Glenwood Hot Springs is considered an icon in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool measures over two blocks long. The heated waters are 90°-93°F (32°-34°C) in the large pool and 104°F (40°C) in the smaller, therapy pool. Two water slides, inner tubes, diving board, and bubble chairs bring out the kid in everyone. Visitors have access to modern locker room facilities, lounge chairs, towel service, and swim suit rentals. Located in the historic sandstone bathhouse, treatments at the Spa of the Rockies focus on wellness and natural health practices which have a deep‑rooted history at Glenwood Hot Springs. The Spa of the Rockies continues to gain a national and international reputation for excellence. It has been recognized as a Readers’ Choice spa by both SpaFinder and Spa magazine. The Spa of the Rockies features nine treatment rooms including one specialized hydrotherapy room for Vichy shower treatments. Five private, claw-foot hydrotherapy tubs are used for mineral baths and herbal soaks. Spa services include massage, facials, light emitting diode (LED) therapy, body treatments, manicures and pedicures, as well as body waxing and make-up services. To extend the spa experience, the spa boutique sells products used in treatments that support home care. Just a few steps away, the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that included floor-to-ceiling refurbishments to all 107 guest rooms. The comprehensive project took its cue from the award-winning Spa of the Rockies and from the hot springs themselves. Spa ambiance embraces guests as soon as they step into the newly designed rooms. A comforting color palette combined with touchable surfaces delight the senses. A fluffy down-filled duvet encased in a waffle weave cover conjures images of cozy spa robes, a river rock lamp reminds guests of Glenwood Hot Springs’ connection to the natural thermal springs, and framed photographs depict images that provide an artistic perspective of the geological wonders of the area. The spa treatment also extends to the bathroom, a modern alcove for rejuvenation. A residential-style vanity with granite countertops helps guests feel right at home, while the shower enclosure, decorated with luminous glass accents of olive, gold and chocolate, channels a vacation state of mind. Each room features technological upgrades such as a 42-inch flat screen LED television that is HDMI- and Cat 5-compatible. New amenities include a built-in mini fridge, a microwave, state-of-the-art in-room safe, and convenient bedside docking stations for iPods and smartphones. In 2008, the lobby and hallways received a face-lift with new carpet, wallpaper, furniture, lighting décor, wall trim and curtains. Rates start at $139 per room per night and include a room with two queen-size beds at the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge, unlimited swimming at the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, and a full breakfast at the poolside Grill. Since Glenwood Hot Springs is open year-round, visitors can enjoy the facilities no matter what the temperature outside. Locals look forward to a soak in the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool in the winter, when steam billows in thick clouds as snowflakes melt into the water. Some practice a Nordic tradition of emerging from the warm waters only to roll around in the snow on the deck. What a great way to “chill out”! Going to the Glenwood Hot Springs on New Year’s Eve has become a popular family-oriented, alcohol-free tradition, when revelers ring in the New Year at the stroke of midnight, complete with noise makers. Sunny skies and toasty summer temperatures encourage visitors to stake out spots on the large, grassy lawn near the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. Picnic coolers are welcome, but glass and alcohol are not permitted. The value-priced Splash (pool admission, refillable fountain drink, 8-punch waterslide ticket) or Super Splash (pool admission, refillable fountain drink, 8-inch pizza and all-day waterslide pass) are great deals for visitors. Giant soft-serve ice-cream cones from the seasonal Snack Bar are a refreshing, warm-weather treat. Relax Mind and Body at the Spa of the Rockies 2013, Glenwood Springs, CO… More than 100 years ago, the Glenwood Hot Springs was known for its sunken Roman tubs in the old sandstone bathhouse originally built in 1888. Now visitors to Glenwood Springs are able to relax, rejuvenate and recharge with modern treatments inspired by historic healing rituals at the award-winning Spa of the Rockies, located in the original 19th-century bathhouse. The Spa of the Rockies was recognized by both SpaFinder and Spa magazine with Readers’ Choice awards. The spa has eight treatment rooms including facial rooms and couples’ suites as well as one specialized hydrotherapy treatment room for Vichy shower treatments. Other features include five hydrotherapy tubs for mineral baths and herbal soaks, two manicure stations and two pedicure thrones. Guests can enjoy a pre or post treatment steam in the locker room, as well as relax in the Serenity Room, a co-ed relaxation suite where soundproof windows give views of the pool without the noise. Here guests can sip organically grown teas, nibble dried fruit, and doze in a chaise while they await their treatments. Assistant Spa Director, Karla Hallock, describes the facility as a natural spa focused on healing. “Our mission is to make people feel better and this spa is a perfect complement to the athletic club and pool facilities,” she explains. Drawing inspiration from the rich, thermal mineral waters of the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, the Spa of the Rockies features a group of mineral-based treatments that promote wellness and vitality. Thirty-four essential minerals are incorporated into certain signature hydrotherapy bath treatments, body polishes, body masks, massages, manicures and pedicures. Many of these products are available for sale in the spa boutique. In homage to the Ute Indians who first soaked in the natural hot springs centuries ago, some treatments on the spa menu incorporate plants and herbs that are indigenous to the region. Examples include: • Stonecrop Extreme Hydration Body Cocoon, a hydrating body wrap that incorporates stonecrop, an alpine succulent • Rosehip & Maize Gentle Renewal Facial, for vitamin-C antioxidant protection • Calendula & Rose Hand & Foot Soother, using the native flowers to smooth dry skin • Kneipp Herbal Relaxation Soaks, using essential-oil products with spruce, wildflowers, valerian, juniper and linden blossom. While the soft blue and chocolate brown décor of the Spa of the Rockies is simultaneously soothing, sophisticated and contemporary, architects and interior designers sought to maintain as much of the historic feel as possible. For example, one of the treatment rooms, a couples’ suite where two people can get side-by-side massages, still retains the original fireplace and mantel. -end- Jeremy Gilley, Director of Sales & Revenue Glenwood Hot Springs & Spa of the Rockies 970-945-3324 [email protected] Vicky Nash, Media Relations Representative Resort Trends, Inc. 970-948-4923 [email protected] For more information on Glenwood Hot Springs, call 1-800-537-SWIM (7946) or visit www.hotspringspool.com. Glenwood Hot Springs: Making History for 125 Years 2013, Glenwood Springs, CO... Glenwood Hot Springs celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2013, but the history of the hot springs dates back thousands of years. Ancient rain and melted snow, superheated deep within the earth, bubbled up through layers of sandstone emerging in underground caves and hot pools that dot the Colorado River. The Ute Indians were the first to discover these mineral-rich waters calling them “Yampah” meaning “Big Medicine”. In the 1880’s, the town of Glenwood Springs was evolving. Intrepid explorer Captain Richard Sopris was the first white man to lay claim to Yampah Hot Springs. Walter Devereux and his two brothers purchased the springs and 10 acres of land in 1886 with grand plans to build the largest hot springs pool in the world. Completed 125 years ago, in 1888, the first pool, known as the Natatorium, was 615 feet long and 75 feet wide with a large fountain at the deep end. The red sandstone bath house and lodge were designed by Theodore von Rosenberg, an architect from Vienna, Austria. The building was completed in 1890 at a cost of $100,000 and housed tubs, Roman vapor baths, 44 bath rooms with dressing and lounging rooms, a ladies’ parlor, physician’s office, gymnasium for “Swedish movements,” plus smoking and reading rooms. In 1891, construction began on the Hotel Colorado, modeled after the Villa de Medici in Italy, taking two years to complete at a cost of more than $850,000. Glenwood Springs became a world-renowned resort destination, playing host to presidents, U.S. senators, movie stars and European dignitaries. The Glenwood Hot Springs has endured many changes over the years. During World War II, from 1943 to 1946, the Hotel Colorado and bath house served as a U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital, used as a rehabilitation facility for sailors and marines, and was closed to the public. After the war, the bath house was converted to a private hospital, the Glenwood Clinic, until 1950. It was then converted to a hotel called The Hot Springs Lodge. In 1956, a group of 22 area businessmen purchased the Hot Springs Lodge and Pool. In 1960, the pools were renovated and a filtration system was installed. In the 1970’s, a new master plan was implemented, involving several physical improvements to the complex including a new main bath house with expanded locker facilities, a water slide, sport shop, restaurant-lounge, and athletic club. A new children’s wading pool was added along with a miniature golf course adjacent to the pool. Two new water slide rides were introduced in 2000. -more- Jeremy Gilley, Director of Sales & Revenue Glenwood Hot Springs & Spa of the Rockies 970-945-3324 [email protected] Vicky Nash, Media Relations Representative Resort Trends, Inc. 970-948-4923 [email protected] For more information on Glenwood Hot Springs, call 1-800-537-SWIM (7946) or visit www.hotspringspool.com. Glenwood Hot Springs is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, between Aspen and Vail, 165 miles west of Denver and 90 miles east of Grand Junction on Interstate 70 off exit 116 at 401 North River Street. In 1986, the resort built a new hotel, the 107-room Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge. An older motel unit, next to the old red sandstone lodge, was torn down and replaced with landscaping. West of the Grand Avenue bridge, another motel unit was torn down, and replaced with additional parking. In 1993, major renovations were made to the original stone bath house, including expansion of the athletic club, meeting rooms, administrative offices, and snack bar. The Spa of the Rockies opened in 2008. Appropriately, it is located in the landmark old sandstone bathhouse where mineral-rich healing traditions are deeply rooted. Cosmetic refurbishments to the Athletic Club and the Lodge also took place. Perhaps most significantly, the umbrella name for for the entire resort, “Hot Springs Lodge & Pool”, was changed to the more all-encompassing “Glenwood Hot Springs”. A new logo was designed along with the launch of a new marketing and branding campaign. In 2011, the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that infused all 107 guest rooms with spa-like ambiance. Rooms now feature a soothing color palette of sage, cinnamon with chocolate accents. Other notable improvements include technological upgrades such as bedside iPod docking stations and 42-inch flat screen LED televisions. The Glenwood Hot Springs continues to grow, renovate, remodel, and improve its facilities making it one of the top attractions in Colorado. -end- Health Benefits of Mineral Hot Springs 2013, Glenwood Springs, CO... People have been “taking the waters” at the natural hot springs that feed the Glenwood Hot Springs for centuries. The Ute Indians were the first to discover the miraculous healing powers of the local mineral waters, calling them “Yampah” meaning “Big Medicine.” These early Colorado residents considered this a sacred place and used the waters to heal their sick and wounded. In the late 1890’s, the hot springs mineral water was bottled by the Glenwood Hot Springs Company under the name “Yampah.” The beverage was served in the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad dining cars and eating establishments and was distributed by druggists. Hot mineral water from the “drinking” or “cocktail” spring, a stone structure built in 1888, was served up in goblets and still exists for those who can brave the pungent sulfur aroma. The practice of using natural mineral water for the treatment or cure of disease is known as “balneology”. Soaking in highly concentrated mineral water is thought to have many health benefits such as increasing body temperature thus killing harmful germs and viruses, eliminating toxins, increasing blood flow and circulation, increasing metabolism, and absorption of essential minerals. Many have come to the Glenwood Hot Springs to treat their ailments. The famous gun-slinger, Doc Holliday, who suffered from tuberculosis, came to Glenwood Springs to ease his symptoms. During World War II, the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool was used as a therapeutic tool by physiotherapists to rehabilitate emotionally and physically disabled sailors and marines. Today, heat from the waters continues to have a relaxing, soothing effect on muscles and the mind. The Yampah Spring flows at 3,500,000 gallons per day at a temperature of 122° F (51°C), one of the hottest in the world, and is cooled to 104°F (40°C) before it is piped in to the Glenwood Hot Springs therapy pool. Many come to the Glenwood Hot Springs to rejuvenate, revitalize and get back to nature. Visitors often feel healthier, happier and renewed. Perhaps it is the fountain of youth? -end- Jeremy Gilley, Director of Sales & Revenue Glenwood Hot Springs & Spa of the Rockies 970-945-3324 [email protected] Vicky Nash, Media Relations Representative Resort Trends, Inc. 970-948-4923 [email protected] For more information on Glenwood Hot Springs, call 1-800-537-SWIM (7946) or visit www.hotspringspool.com. Renewable energy may be a hot topic in the news, but Glenwood Hot Springs has been harnessing the power of Mother Nature to save natural resources for more than twenty years. The naturally heated mineral waters not only support a thriving business, but also serve as an efficient energy source. The Glenwood Hot Springs uses an innovative geothermal system that is environmentally friendly and economical by saving non-renewable energy resources and reducing energy costs. With one of the hotter mineral springs in the world and a tremendous flow rate, it was only natural to devise ways to make use of this powerful source of energy. Several mechanisms make it possible to heat the various facilities located on the Glenwood Hot Springs property. A series of titanium heat exchangers submerged in the Yampah Spring makes it possible to heat the entire 107-room Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge, plus some of the surrounding sidewalks and roofline. It is the largest geothermally heated building in Colorado. Domestic hot water is also preheated by this technology. The system design was so innovative, that the engineers and the property were recognized with an award from the Centre for the Analysis and Dissemination Energy Technologies (CADDET) in the Netherlands in the early 90s. Domestic hot water for the bathhouse locker rooms is preheated via large coils that are also submerged in the main spring. As the water flows through these coils, it absorbs the energy provided by the hot water of the spring. The city water temperature, as it enters the coil, averages 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and as it exits the coils, it is 105 +degrees. Additionally, the bathhouse, pool lobby and Sport Shop floors are heated in the winter by diverting the natural flow of the main spring through a series of underground pipes that are gravity fed. High traffic areas of the pool deck are heated in this manner as well and provide a snow-free, slip-proof surface for guests. The geothermal system also pre-heats laundry water, domestic water for the Spa of the Rockies in the historic sandstone building, and the Jacuzzi pool in the wet lounge of the Athletic Club. The Glenwood Hot Springs has great respect for the valuable, natural resource that people have enjoyed for 125 years. “Obviously, we feel a sense of stewardship for the natural springs. We will always do our best to protect this natural resource and at the same time continually develop ways in which to use the geothermal energy to support environmental health,” said Kjell Mitchell, President and Chief Executive Officer. For more than two decades the Glenwood Hot Springs has actively looked for creative ways to harness this resource, maximizing energy efficiency and lessening the impact on the environment, and it will continue to do so into the future.
