G l e n w o o d E l e m e n t a r y October 2014
Dear Glenwood Parents and Families, Welcome to autumn and a brand new school year! We spent the month of September getting to know each other, establishing routines and expectations, and setting the stage for a year full of fun, exploration, and learning. I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time in each classroom these first few weeks, and have let the students know what my expectations are for learning and in regard to their behavior. Our focus here at Glenwood often centers around opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning and behavior, with an emphasis on the importance of being a leader. I let them know that this is their school, and they are responsible for making it a wonderful place to spend time. Vestal Central Schools G l e n w o o d E l e m e n ta ry October 2014 I also talked to each class about our focus on “fish” this year, and different ways that fish can be earned. Take a look inside of our newsletter this month and find out more about how our students earn fish for their class fish bowl. Some of you may have heard that our music and band teacher, Ann Reed, has decided to retire and will be leaving at the end of November. Though her main job has been to teach children about music for all these years, Mrs. Reed has also taught her students the importance of good character, and that is just as important. Please join me in wishing her well in life’s next adventure. We will miss her! We have several new staff members working at Glenwood this year. Sara Spencer comes to us from Clayton Ave Elementary and is one of our kindergarten teachers. Janet Mitchell joins us this year as a lunch and playground monitor. We also have Lori Scarantino, Ramona Kacyvenski, and Dottie Dauber working here at Glenwood as kindergarten aides. Welcome to all of our new staff! It was nice to have so many of you here for our Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 18th. I’d like to thank the GSCA for all of their work in setting up the Book Fair and coordinating that each year during Curriculum Night and Open House. We have our school pictures scheduled for October 22nd, and many other fall celebrations planned—including the Fall Party that our GSCA sponsors on October 24th. Our first family events of the year will be Muffins with Mom @ 8:15 on Friday, October 3 rd and Donuts with Dad @ 8:15 AM on October 17 th. We hope to see many of you that morning, spending some time before school with your son or daughter. We are looking forward to a fantastic school year and are delighted to have your child join us as we discover and grow together! Doreen McSain Glenwood Elementary Principal Nurse notes Vision and Hearing Screening Routine vision and hearing screenings will be given to all our students this Fall. A letter will be sent home if there are any findings on the screenings that would cause concern or need for medical follow-up. Physical and Dental Examinations All students entering Kindergarten, Second and Fourth grades and any new students to Vestal are required to have physical examinations. If the completed physical form or the date of the future exam is not returned to the health office by the end of October, your child will be scheduled to have an exam with our school physician. These students are also requested to have their dentist complete the dental examination form when they go for their scheduled appointments anytime during the school year. Forms are available in the health office or on the Vestal website. Attendance Please call the Health office at 757-2293 if your child will be absent or late coming to school even if you have told the teacher in advance. Friendly Reminder A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. Therefore, your child should remain at home until he/she is fever, vomit and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours. If your child is diagnosed with Strep Throat, the antibiotic must have been taken for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Also, children with bad colds or cough should remain at home. Welcome back and I hope all our students will have a safe and healthy school year!
