Annual Report 2014
Through a rigorous core curriculum, a nurturing residential program and strong family partnerships, the
Glenwood experience builds a platform children need to be successful students and become outstanding
citizens. This experience forever changes their lives, enhances the lives of their families and improves the
fabric of their communities.
Each year, Glenwood’s students reap the benefits of our dedicated staff. Our teachers dedicate themselves
to providing a top notch education. Our house parents create a true family in their cottages. The Glenwood
Community has created a special place for our students to grow and mature into responsible young adults
and contributing members of society.
Our students are able to transcend their circumstances, so that they may take that next step. All of our
students are promoted to the next grade level; each 8th grader goes on to high school; and, each graduating
high school senior attends college, enrolls in a trade school, or enters the military.
With a stable foundation and a firm commitment to our future, Glenwood Academy stands poised to develop
new strategies to meet both opportunities and challenges in our constantly evolving environment.
We are proud to share with you the accomplishments of the past year. We have been able to change our
student’s lives because of your generous support. Within the pages of this annual report, you will find stories of
how Glenwood has made a difference, how house parents dedicate themselves to their kids, and how donors
truly connect with our mission.
President’s Letter
Dear Friends,
As part of the new leadership at Glenwood Academy, we are pleased to present the annual report for FY14
(September 1, 2013 - August 31, 2014) that details our financial operations, program impact and recognizes
our donors and partners who remain committed to offering a bright, new world of promise for our students.
We are so grateful for your support. Thanks for all you do for Glenwood Academy!
Warm regards,
Mark WightMary Hollie

2013-2014
How Glenwood Makes a Difference
“Glenwood is not just a school; it’s a family.” Seventh grader, Elijah D.
Elijah came to Glenwood Academy in a time of need. When he was born, his father had already left his life,
his mother had become ‘lost to the streets’ and his grandmother was not capable of raising a child. The family
turned to Elijah’s great-grandmother. She took him in, even though she lives on a very restricted income. There
are times when it is hard for her to put food on the table for herself, let alone a growing boy.
During these difficult circumstances, Eula turned to Glenwood. Elijah enrolled at Glenwood as a third grader.
Because Eula knows that Elijah is well taken care of at Glenwood, she rests easier at night. With Glenwood’s
residential program, Elijah lives in a cottage with five other young boys his age, all under the supervision of his
house parents, Angela and Clayton Berkey.
Unfortunately, many of Glenwood’s children live at or below the poverty level in the Chicagoland area, from
communities that struggle with gangs, drugs, and violence. Nearly 50% of Glenwood’s students are from
underserved and marginalized communities in Chicago. Some children come to Glenwood during a crisisdealing with issues like illness, desertion, or drug abuse in their family.
Another reason parents turn to Glenwood is to ensure their child escapes the violence on the city streets.
When Vashawn S. came to Glenwood, he and his mom were looking for a place to keep him safe. He was
growing up in an environment where gunshots were something you heard every day. He also felt that his
teachers never really cared if he learned what they were supposed to be teaching. The violence was just too
overwhelming. You were either in a gang or you got beat up.
Making a Difference
Coming to Glenwood gave Vashawn a piece of mind and an opportunity to concentrate on his studies and
grades. He has flourished at Glenwood and is currently in his senior year at Bloom Township High School.
These two students know that attending Glenwood has given them a chance at a life that they didn’t think
was possible. Elijah still struggles a bit in school, but he knows that by studying harder, he will succeed at
Glenwood. Vashawn has his eyes set on attending Northern Illinois University. He is succeeding because
of the support that he has received from his teachers and house parents, and our donors, at Glenwood.
At the Senior Banquet, graduates were given artwork depicting the first initial of their first name.

Glenwood offers a unique experience, and that is mainly because of our house parents. House parents strive
to develop strong partnerships with families by offering support, guidance and education, not only for the
students but for family members as well. Students live on campus during the week; they are dropped off on
Sunday nights, and picked up by their parents or guardians on Friday afternoons. During these times, parents,
guardians and house parents, build a relationship and discuss any issues children may be experiencing as well
as how to address them as a team. Parents receive weekly reports, known as “Friday Folders,” that illustrate
the positive behavior and any challenging behavior that the student struggled with during the week.
The role of the house parent is an exceptional one. House parents are role models for our students. They
give one-on-one attention as needed and are ready to listen when children are excited or discouraged about
their lives. House parents discuss issues their student is having and work with the child to address them in a
constructive way. This might include taking care of a sick child in the middle of the night, answering questions
before bedtime or just providing reassurance to soothe concerns about the future, homesickness or other
fears. Most times, children just need a caring adult to talk to and who takes the time to listen.
Mary and Bill Hill have been house parents for 23 years. They have 5 children of their own and 20
grandchildren. Mary has always worked in customer service and sales; in her 13 years of selling cars, she
was always the first woman at each dealership where she worked. When Mary was the manager of a
Blockbuster Video, one of her employees was going through a tough time and while trying to help this
employee get out of a bad situation, Mary learned about Glenwood.
She was so impressed with the school, she wanted to become a part of the team. Mary applied for the job
of relief house parent before speaking with Bill. At the time, Bill was managing a group of dry cleaners and
supervising 23 people. He was a bit hesitant about being a house parent at first, but, after seeing how
much it meant to Mary, he relented.
Mary has always felt that she was placed here to give back and to help others. She truly believes in the
ministry of lifting others up. When she found Glenwood, she immediately knew this was the place for her.
One year after applying for the job at Glenwood, the Hills joined Glenwood’s staff as the house parents of
Ryerson Cottage.
Being house parents has never
been a job for the Hills; it has
always been a ministry. Seeing
their students grow and prosper
is what keeps them here at
Glenwood.
The Hills with the boys of Ryerson Cottage from Christmas 2014.
While Mary was the driving force of what brought them to Glenwood, Bill recently discovered something from
his past that led him to believe Glenwood was his destiny. In some old boxes, he uncovered something from
third grade: his teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He replied that he wanted to be
the best dad he could be.
By joining Glenwood, the Hills have enriched the lives of so many of our students. We are truly lucky to have
them here!

Annual Report
Over the years, the Hills have
been house parents to many
students. They were the house
parents to the first cottage of
girls when Glenwood expanded
in 2003. They have since
returned to being house parents
to high school boys. This past
Christmas, the Hills sent out a
card with their boys all wearing
Santa hats.

True Collaborators: The Greer Foundation
Over the years, Glenwood Academy has been lucky to have true collaborators. These are individuals or
organizations who believe in our mission, and more importantly, the success of our students. Through
various avenues, a person can become aware of Glenwood, albeit a personal connection, a trusted
colleague, or through word-of-mouth.
Pat and Carl Greer were introduced to Glenwood through Bob Darnall, a Glenwood Trustee. Through the
years, Pat and Carl have supported many worthy causes in the Chicago area. They have always donated to
organizations that aim to break bad cycles and treat the whole person. If a child is surrounded by a stressful or
abusive home life, this is what a child comes to understand as normal behavior. As such, the child could grow
up and continue that type of negative cycle. At Glenwood, Pat and Carl found a school that works with the
whole family to ensure the child does not become a negative statistic, and understands that there are many
opportunities to explore.
The Greer Foundation
Some years ago, Pat and Carl established the Greer Foundation. This allows their family to support many
organizations that they believe in, and allows them to become more closely involved with supporting the
mission of these organizations by creating specific partnerships. A driving force of the mission of the Greer
Foundation is collaborating with like-minded organizations. Former Glenwood President John Irwin along with
Pat and Carl Greer joined together to see if junior high students could be enticed to think of a career in a STEM
field. Opening up different doors so that our students can experience what is outside of the norm, is a goal for
both organizations.
This partnership established the Greer Scholars. This scholarship is an amazing opportunity for our graduating
seniors, and Glenwood is honored that the Greer Foundation has created this unique collaboration with its
students. The Greer Foundation has committed up to $720,000 in continuing education scholarships for
Glenwood graduates. An average of $6,000 per year will be provided for up to six graduates to continue
their education in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) study areas. Scholars must
show they would not be able to attend college without the support of the Greer Foundation, as it only provides
need-based scholarships.
The Greer Foundation has also recently awarded a challenge grant to Glenwood for the summer enrichment
program. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000 by the Foundation.
This hands-on approach shows how dedicated the Greer Foundation is to each organization it supports.
Glenwood is honored to work with the Foundation in creating new and exciting opportunities for our students!

Each year, Glenwood looks for new and exciting ways to grow and expand the opportunities we provide
to our students.
Once again this year, we have joined the Stock Market Game, an annual competition among hundreds of
schools across the state of Illinois. We are so proud of our students, who routinely place in the top ten of junior
high schools. This game allows students to ‘invest’ $100,000 in the stock market, so that they learn about our
economy, how to make wise financial decisions and also, how to listen and work well with others.
Working well with others is also a key component of Cub Scouts.
Recently, house parent Dave Hewchuk has taken on the task of leading a pack of Cub Scouts. The emphasis
of Cub Scouting is to have fun and learn at the same time. Cub Scouts learn new things, discover and master
new skills, gain self-confidence, and develop strong friendships. Cultivating a love and appreciation of the
outdoors and outdoor activities are key elements.
A love of the outdoors and camping will definitely have an impact on attending Camp Getschow and a new
partnership with the Cook County Forest Preserve. Many of our students do come from ‘concrete jungles’ and
may not have an appreciation for nature. Living on 125 beautiful acres, and being surrounded by a few forest
preserves, students have access to a world that they had been cut off from before.
New Activities
Beyond 187th and Halsted
Glenwood opens doors that have traditionally been shut for our students. We need them to truly experience
the world around them. We are so grateful we can bring these programs to them and we can do that because
of your support!

Many of Glenwood’s children live at or below the poverty level and are from communities that
struggle with violence, gangs and drugs. Nearly 50% of Glenwood’s students are from underserved
and marginalized communities including surrounding suburbs such as Harvey, Joliet, Dolton,
Robbins, Chicago Heights and Ford Heights; another 30% hail from neglected neighborhoods
within the city of Chicago. By sending their children to Glenwood, our parents understand the
necessity of providing a safe harbor for kids where they are inspired to live, learn and achieve.
We are truly proud of our students who have overcome the odds and begun their path to success at
Glenwood. Over the past four years, 100% of Glenwood’s high school seniors have graduated from
high school and entered into a 2 or 4 year university or entered the military. Over the past 15 years,
100% of Glenwood’s high school graduates matriculated to college, trade school or military service.
