From The Treasurer Martha Barry _______________________________ T he Board recommends that residents avail themselves of the convenience of direct pay for monthly Association fees. The fees are due on the first day of each month with a grace period of 10 days. They must be delivered to the office by 2:00 P.M. on the tenth of the month. If it is late for any reason a charge of $25.00 is assessed to the unit. Anyone wishing to use direct pay may pick up a form at the office and return it signed with a void check attached. This must be done by the 25th of the month prior to the first payment being withdrawn from a bank account. Direct pay is secure. Cornerstone Bank handles the transactions through secure electronic channels. Payments are deducted on the 5th of the month. We have been using this method for five years and it has proved to be an safe and efficient process. Many residents do not return before election information needs to be mailed out in November and this helps us get it to the right place. Also, the 2013-14 Dial Directory is here. You may pick that up at the office next time you're at the clubhouse. Yoga ________________________________________ Y oga is offered every Monday at 11:00 AM in the clubhouse and is quickly becoming very popular. Please, join us for an hour of light stretching and meditation with a licensed yoga instructor. A $5.00 donation will be accepted. "Chair" yoga is also being offered at 11:00 A.M. on Thursdays. It's an alternative to floor yoga for those of us out here with achy bones. You reap the benefits of the discipline without having to get up off that floor! Again, a $5.00 donation will be accepted. GLENWOOD GAZETTE APRIL, 2013 E 13 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved 35 Years in Monthly Media A Recipe To Share Ginger Henderson ____________________________________________________________________ CALYPSO CUPS 1 cup butter, softened. 2 packages (3 oz) cream cheese, softened. 2 cups all-purpose flour. 3 tsp. sugar Filling: 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup sugar 3 tsp. cornstarch 2 cans (8 oz.) crushed pineapple, un-drained. 2 eggs Frosting: 2 cups confectioner's sugar 1/2 cup shortening, (I use butter shortening) 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 tbsp. milk C ream butter, cream cheese. Gradually add flour. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour until easy to handle. Roll into 1 in. balls. Press onto the bottom and sides of greased miniature muffin cups. (If you use the teflon type, you do not have to grease the muffin cups. Combine filling ingredients, spoon into cups. (I like to really fill them up. You may have a little juice left over) Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until edges are lightly brown. Cool in pans on wire racks. For Frosting combine the sugar, shortening, and vanilla: add enough milk to achieve spreading consistency. Remove cooled cups and frost. I usually put them into miniature paper cups. Makes 4 dozen cups, you may freeze them. This recipe is amended from last month where 1/2 cup shortening, for the frosting, was listed twice. 14 GLENWOOD GAZETTE APRIL, 2013 E 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved PEST CONTROL Household Pest Control - $35 every 2 mos. 8 • Inside, Outside & Underneath Treatments • Drywood & Subterranean Termite Treatments Licensed • Insured Bob's 535-2629 8 APPLIANCE Family Owned & Operated TM Carpet Color Systems Since 1976 CARPET CLEANING REPAIR •Refrigerators •Washers •Dryers •Ice Makers and more 4 Living Room, Dining Area, & Hall 85 $ 00 (up to 400 sq. feet... small furniture moved) FREE BEDROOM (traffic areas only) OR FREE DEODORIZER With Above Special My PAPA Can Help You! 637-4789 4 7 Full Service Auto Repair Licensed & Insured 7 HURRICANE ANCHORS LEVELING & BLOCKING • Add Anchors • Carport Strapping • Longitudinal Stabilizing • Replace Rusted Anchors • Retro-fit to Current State Standards FREE Shuttle Service! Recover Your Inner Child’s Imagination _______________________________________________ C hildren are naturally creative, but you don’t have to lose the spark of imagination as you age. Try these tricks to keep your mind young and fresh throughout your life: • Look at the clouds. Play the childhood game of gazing up at clouds and finding shapes in them. You’ll relax your mind and get into the habit of looking for new connections. • Re-read a favorite book. Pick a book from your childhood and read it again. Has it changed—or has your perspective on it shifted? What lessons does it still have to teach? • Visit your best places. Go back to some location you loved as a child. Look for what you enjoyed about it, and what’s different. Reconnect with your memories and use them to reignite your ambitions. Data from the Pew Research Center indicate that about 78 percent of Americans 16 or older say they’ve read at least one book in the last 12 months. Pew looked at variations among reading habits in different communities. For example, 80 percent of urban and suburban residents alike say they’ve read at least one book in the past year, along with 78 percent of those in rural areas. We read for many reasons: 82 percent of suburban book lovers say they read for pleasure, as well as 79 percent of city dwellers and 76 percent of rural residents. At the same time, 79 percent of urbanites read to keep pace with current events; so do 79 percent of readers in the suburbs, and 73 percent of rural readers. It’s not all e-books, either: 58 percent of Americans 16 and older say they have a library card, and 69 percent say that libraries are very important to them and their families. These new words may not appear in any dictionary, but they’re sure to add some sparkle to your everyday conversations: • Beardspiration. A beard so awesome that it inspires other people to grow their own beards. “Abraham Lincoln is truly a beardspiration to me.” • Corporatistical. Adjective relating to oversize executive egos. “Telling me to remove all the semicolons from that report was really corporatistical of him.” • Deskorations. Knicknacks for the workplace cubicle, intended to make the resident look cool. “That miniature fountain would make a great deskoration for the office.” • Inboxapocalpyse. An overstuffed email inbox. “I’ve got 1,256 emails! It’s an inboxapocalpyse!” • Stresscalation. When one person passes his or her stress on to a co-worker. “Pam’s meetings always produce a significant stresscalation to her assistant.” If you let fear of consequence prevent you from following your deepest instinct, then your life will be safe, expedient, and thin. —Katharine Butler Hathaway Financial Literacy Month. Many Americans are insufficiently educated about their personal finances. According to www.financialliteracymonth.com, the sponsor website, Americans carry more than $2 trillion in consumer debt, and 30 percent report not having enough extra cash to escape the stress of living paycheck to paycheck. GLENWOOD GAZETTE APRIL, 2013 E 27 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved 35 Years in Monthly Media Don’t Let Burnout Get You Down _________________________________________________ B urnout can affect your home life and personal relationships as well as your job. If you answer yes to at least three of the following questions, then you might be close to burnout: • Do you have difficulty getting up in the morning? • Do you feel always tired? • Do you frequently forget things? • Do you have unexplained aches and pains? • Are you irritable at work and at home? • Do you feel overwhelmed most of the time? • Do you often feel bored on the job? • Have you begun to wonder why you’re doing what you’re doing? How do you eliminate burnout? Here are several suggestions: • Be more social. Find things to do with co-workers, friends, and family members. If you feel connected to others, you’ll probably end up reducing the work-related stress. • Add fun to your daily work life. Bring in baby pictures and post them on the bulletin board in the break room and have other employees join in; plan a visit to the zoo or the gym; or take a walk outside during your lunch break. • Create a safe haven. Ask your manager if you can create a stress-free zone for other burned-out employees. It doesn’t have to be big; it could be a hallway outside a conference room. Put up an inflatable palm tree and a picture of the ocean—anything that brings calm thoughts to mind for you and others. Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward. —Kurt Vonnegut Jr. 28 GLENWOOD GAZETTE APRIL, 2013 E 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved HAVE YOU SUFFERED FROM WATER OR FLOOD DAMAGE? To keep your bones strong and avoid injury on the job (and at home), follow these tips: • Take your vitamins. Calcium is essential to strong bones, and it’s found in yogurt, cheese, milk, spinach, and other food, as well as in nutritional supplements. It works best when combined with vitamin D, which you can get from shrimp, fortified orange juice and cereal, egg yolks, and tuna, as well as in supplement form. Vitamin K, in addition, assists your body in producing the proteins necessary for healthy bones. • Exercise. Physical fitness is a major component of good health in general, and weight-bearing exercises in particular (walking, running, climbing stairs, and lifting weights) can do a good job of keeping your bones healthier and stronger as you age, as well as reducing the risk of osteoporosis. • Limit cigarettes, coffee, and alcohol. All three have negative effects on bone mass. Have regular hours for work and play; make each day both useful and pleasant, and prove that you understand the worth of time by employing it well. Then youth will be delightful, old age will bring few regrets, and life become a beautiful success, in spite of poverty. —Louisa May Alcott Environmental Education Week, April 14-20.
