The following suggestions should help you find a physician with whom you and your children can have a comfortable, trusting relationship. 1. Compile a list of physicians recommended by friends, relatives and your obstetrician or midwife. Ask each person making a recommendation what they particularly like about that physician. Narrow your choices to several who have convenient locations and are recommended by more than one person. Name__________________________________________________ Phone ________________________________ Name__________________________________________________ Phone ________________________________ Name__________________________________________________ Phone ________________________________ 2. Call the doctor’s office and ask for an appointment for a prenatal conference. 3. During the prenatal conference (make notes on separate pages): A. What is your reaction to the doctor’s office? Is the waiting room comfortable? Can you imagine spending an hour there with a young child? Are the office personnel friendly and competent? B. What is your reaction to the doctor’s personality and appearance? C. Find out about the doctor’s training and hospital affiliations. D. Are the doctor’s opinions about child-rearing generally compatible with yours? For example, is the doctor supportive of the feeding method you have chosen? E. Ask about the office schedule. When is the doctor’s day off? Does the doctor have a “telephone hour” when you can call to discuss concerns without being charged? What is the procedure in an emergency? F. Ask what other doctor(s) you might see if he/she is not on call. G. Ask any questions you may have about immediate newborn care, hospital procedures, infant care, etc. Be sure to discuss circumcision. 4. After the conference take time to sum up your impression. Do not feel guilty if you decide not to use a particular physician’s services. Make an appointment with another doctor and repeat the conference process until you are satisfied with your choice. Be sensitive to the needs of our patients. Please limit the number of visitors during labor and delivery. A family waiting room is available for family and friends. 2. Please do not wait in the hallway; we ask that you use the family waiting room. 3. Children may visit in the postpartum unit if accompanied by an adult. Please keep children at home if they have any signs of illness. 4. Rest is important to our patients during the recovery phase. It is important to keep noise at a minimum. Please limit the number of visitors in the room at one time and keep visits short. Be considerate of others. 5. Please observe the “No Visitors” sign when it is posted on the patient’s door. 6. Visitors may be asked to alter their visiting pattern if care and treatment is being provided to the patient. Please help us ensure the dignity and privacy of our patients. 8 christusspohn.org Health System Birthing Services Advanced Medicine. Compassionate Care.
