The Broward Sheriff's Office on Thursday released the
name of the woman run over and killed by an on-duty
deputy, as investigators continue to figure out how fast the
deputy was driving.
Helen Adams, 46, of Plantation, was killed shortly after 3
a.m. Wednesday as she crossed North Federal Highway
while not using a crosswalk near the Fort Lauderdale and
Pompano Beach border, the Sheriff's Office said.

Family members and friends described Adams to local media outlets as a mother of five who had been
suffering from a heart condition in recent years. Sheriff's investigators still are looking at the
circumstances of the collision, an effort that could take several weeks, said agency spokeswoman Dani
Moschella.

Adams' boyfriend claimed that the deputy appeared to be speeding without a siren or emergency lights
activated. The posted limit on that stretch of Federal Highway is 45 mph.
If Bates, who is assigned to BSO's Pompano Beach district, was not on his way to a call, he would be
expected to abide by the posted limit and other traffic laws, Moschella said.
Helen Adams and her boyfriend were walking eastbound in an area where lighting was minimal and no
other vehicles were present on the road, Moschella said.
John Adams told investigators he had already crossed the southbound lanes of Federal Highway when
Helen Adams was struck, Moschella said.
Although the woman was struck in front of a hospital, her injuries were life-threatening and required
treatment at a trauma center, so she was taken to Broward Health North, nearly seven miles away in
Deerfield Beach, the closest of the county's three trauma centers, officials said. She was pronounced
dead at the hospital.
