COP (Citizen Observer Patrol)
Police Athletic League (PAL)
The Police Athletic League (PAL) provides youth
an opportunity to stay out of trouble by participating
in sports and other activities after school or during the summer. The
activities are structured to attract all youth regardless of their previous athletic abilities. PAL's goal is to provide them with activities
that build character and self-esteem, foster positive relationships,
enhance self-awareness and promote good citizenship
Together we can be a great
team. The Broward Sheriff's Office
believes that with residents helping
our officers spot suspicious activities,
we can stop crimes before they are
committed.
BSO's COP Program is a volunteer
group sponsored by the Sheriff's
Office that uses a simple approach to
safeguarding neighborhoods through
residents' involvement. COP volunteers are local residents who help
BSO fight crime by patrolling their
community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards and
offering assistance to local residents.
For more information on becoming a COP volunteer, contact your
local BSO district office or call BSO's

Citizens Academy
The Broward Citizens Academy is a 13-week orientation
course in the field of law enforcement. It's conducted in
a classroom and "out-in-the-field" with certified agency
instructors from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. As part of the class, students complete a fourhour ride-along assignment with a BSO deputy. It's an
excellent way to learn more about law enforcement
through firsthand experience and from those who have
law enforcement background.
he Citizens Academy is free of charge and is held on
consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 2601 West
Broward Boulevard, in Fort Lauderdale.
For further information, contact Ms. Cheryl Vara at
(954) 321-5076.
BSO Law Enforcement Explorers
Senior Citizens Academy
Senior Citizens are the fastest growing segment of
our population and that growth can also mean an
Increased likelihood of crime. BSO's Senior Citizens
Academy helps Broward's senior population reduce
the possibility of crime and improves quality of life.
From home security to defensive driving and f
rom elder abuse to fraud prevention, BSO's Senior
Citizens Academy serves as a vehicle for law
enforcement professionals to share their experience
and knowledge.
For more information, call Cheryl Vara at (954) 321-5076.
Parents, teachers and law enforcement professionals are constantly
seeking ways to expose teenagers to
positive values and role models. The
Law Enforcement Explorers Program at
the Broward Sheriff's Office is a successful example of how adult intervention can instill responsibility, leadership, teamwork and self-reliance.
The program works with teens and
young adults (14-21 years of age) by
allowing them to interact with law enforcement and other community advisors in a serious, regimented atmosphere where the students can demonstrate their personal initiative. The
program offers young adults the opportunity to learn and experience lawful citizenship as they participate sideby-side with certified BSO deputies in
ongoing training and community service projects.

Posse
BSO's Posse is a volunteer organization that provides assistance resources to BSO staff and
Broward County residents. The
Posse assists deputies with DUI enforcement checkpoints, special
event traffic, pedestrian management and other assignments.
Posse members who donate their time to certain specialized units
receive training at the unit level. Other volunteers receive general
training in special event parking and traffic control.
Residents can join the Posse by completing an application available
at all district offices, passing a background check and completing the
required training program. Successful candidates are sworn-in and
