Frequently Asked Questions National surveys find two-thirds of drivers are speeding and one in six drivers are distracted as they pass through school zones. Children are particularly vulnerable in car-pedestrian crashes. A pedestrian struck by a car at 20 mph has a 90 percent chance of survival, but the survival rate drops to 50 percent at 30 mph. Each year, about 25,000 children are injured and 100 are killed walking to and from school in the United States. Why school zone safety cameras? How will I be notified of a violation? A violation notice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle after law enforcement review and approve the data and recorded images. If you receive a notice, go to www.ViolationInfo.com and logon with the information provided on the notice. There you can view video of the incident and the images captured. What are the fines? The fine amount is $150. Will I lose driving points? No points will be assessed. Public education is the key to making our streets safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Brochures are available at most county offices or can be downloaded from the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department website, http://kaufmanso.com/ Check out the following websites for more information about road safety enforcement and other traffic safety issues: Federal Highway Administration, (FHWA) http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) www.iihs.org Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (AHAS) www.saferoads.org Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) www.ghsa.org The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) www.ncsrsafety.org Can I challenge the notice? Research shows that drivers typically return to their dangerous driving habits once the law enforcement presence leaves a school zone, but the constant presence of speed cameras frees deputies to attend to other duties while continuing to enforce traffic laws near schools. Information Resources SCHOOL ZONE SPEED SAFETY CAMERAS IN KAUFMAN COUNTY THE S Why emphasize speed enforcement in school zones? www.facebook.com/KaufmanCounty A Message from Your Sheriff About School Speed Zones The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department will list the speed safety vehicle locations on their website here: http://kaufmanso.com/ According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the intervals of operation of the flashing beacons on the school zone speed limit assembly may be extended or revised for school events as mutually agreed upon by the school district and the entity responsible for the operation of the flashing beacons. Also, a new state law in effect this year prohibits drivers from using cell phones on the roads near schools, drop off zones and parking lots, when reduced speeds are in effect. Exceptions include if the vehicle is stopped, if the driver is making an emergency call and if the phone is a hands-free device. Keeping Kids Safe The goal of the speed zone safety program is to reduce speeds and increase safety for children, pedestrians, and cyclists in school zones. This program enhances enforcement abilities while freeing up other police resources to focus on the mission of promoting traffic safety. Public Safety Public safety is the highest priority of the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department and we believe this Speed Safety Camera program will help make our roadways safer for both residents and visitors of our community. These cameras are another way our Department is using technology to improve public safety. Why is this program necessary? Drivers who fail to control their speed and who exceed or dangerously fail to meet speed limits are the leading contributors to traffic crashes in Texas, causing more than 132,000 crashes in 2012. Speed safety cameras provide a constant enforcement presence that changes driver behavior for improved safety. How the System Works The AutoPatrol 2D system uses ranging radar and a high-resolution digital camera. The 2D radar identifies any vehicle traveling faster than the predetermined speed and triggers the camera, capturing the event. ▪▪ The first captured image shows the vehicle driving in excess of the predetermined speed. ▪▪ The second image shows the distance and time the vehicle traveled. ▪▪ The license plate is taken from a closeup of one of the images captured. ▪▪ Additional data collected includes the time, date, posted speed, vehicle speed, location, lane and direction of travel. School Zone Speed Cameras make sure drivers slow down in school zones! AAA Traffic Safety Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing.
