Early Years Purple Picnic Nelson's Journey is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk. Based in Norwich, we were founded in 1997, since which time we have helped thousands of children between the age of 0 to 17, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life e.g. parent or sibling. We aim to improve the emotional well being of the children and young people we support. Our Service We Provide • Increases self esteem by enabling children and young people to meet others who have been bereaved. • Provides education about causes of death and the events surrounding the funeral. • Assists families in talking more openly. • Enables children and young people to express and understand emotions. • Provides children and young people with opportunities to remember the person who has died. • 1 :1 work with children and young people • Therapeutic residential weekends, activity days and NJ clubs • Support and information for families • Guidance for professionals working directly with children and young people • Training for professionals e.g. teachers, police and NHS Staff Stats to get your teeth into Here are some of our biggest stats from 2015: 601 referrals made to Nelson’s Journey from family members, friends or professionals supporting bereaved children 44% increase (compared to 2014 figures) in the number of referrals received where the cause of death has been reported as suicide 94% of children and young people who attended a Nelson’s Journey therapeutic activity day or weekend reported they felt better about themselves. The valuable contributions you raise during your Purple Picnic will mean we are able to continue our work supporting bereaved children and young people living in Norfolk. Thank you. What your donations could fund £6 could fund a teddy bear for a bereaved child or young person £20 could fund a selection of bereavement work books for children £10 could fund a Nelson’s Journey hoodie which is given to all bereaved children and young people who receive 1:1 support or attend one of our activity days or therapeutic weekends £50 could fund a wide range of resources for our Child Bereavement Support Workers to use during 1:1 support sessions including Memory Box, art and craft materials, therapeutic work books, Memory Bear etc £248 could fund a place for a bereaved young person to attend a therapeutic weekend £522 could fund an assessment of a child’s bereavement needs, attendance on a therapeutic weekend and 1:1 follow up work £7,200 could fund 24 children to attend a therapeutic weekend. No matter what you are able to donate it will make a difference to Norfolk’s bereaved children and young people who are supported by Nelson’s Journey. Early years picnic Nelson could visit you! Purple fun Remember to let us know when you plan to hold your Purple Picnic as one lucky school will receive a visit from our friendly mascot Nelson the cat. We have included a Nelson the Cat Face mask for all your children to enjoy colouring in. Just add string so they can use it throughout the day! Teddy bears picnic This is perhaps the most classic theme for a children’s picnic. Why not ask the children to bring in their teddies for a special fundraising picnic. Perhaps you can charge to have the teddy as a ‘guest’ at their picnic to start the fundraising total off? /nelsonsjourney.norfolk @nelsons_journey You will also find in this pack Nelson’s Treausre Map, this is a great way to raise money quickly, simply charge parents/carers a suggested £2.00 per square to guess where Nelson has hidden his treasure! Food with feelings A great way to get children understanding how the children we support feel, is to incorporate ‘feeling faces’. Ask the children what a sad, worried, scared or happy face loks like? They can design and create different emotions on biscuits, or sandwiches before eating them! @nelsonsjourney Tools to help In this pack we have included: Poster Use this to promote your Picnic to as many people as possible. We have also included a poster for the Nelson’s Journey Purple Picnic event which is open to the public, feel free to come along and share stories from your very own Purple Picnic. Place cards Use the tent cards for your cake sales and bake offs to indicate the price per item. Invitations Use these to invite people to your Purple Picnic, make it special, make it memorable, make it purple! Sponsor form Use the sponsor form as a way to collect money, don’t forget to request that people tick the Gift Aid box if they are a UK tax payer. The Purple Picnic week is all about getting together whilst remembering someone close to you who has died and fundraising for Nelson’s Journey along the way. We have been busy thinking up ways you can make it your own and how best to fundraise for our charity. Follow the steps above to get started! Spread the word and we'll be on a roll! Make them fun, creative, purple and memorable. Where is Nelson's treasure? Nelson has hidden his treasure somewhere on the map overleaf, but can you guess where? For a suggested £2 a go, guess which square Nelson’s treasure is hidden in. Make sure the organiser chooses the winning square before you start selling them! We suggest the prize to be 10% of the takings, if you would like to donate all of the money collected why not buy a box of chocolates to give to the winner? Perhaps you know a baker who would like to donate a cake as a prize? Pump up the jam Create a Dance-a-thon event. Whether it be a silent disco, a concert or why not Zumba your way to fitness, get sponsors and don’t forget to gift aid your sponsorship. Make a splash You will always find people who want their cars washed, charge them a fee and wash cars in your lunch break or at the weekend. Students vs teachers Have a quiz against a teacher and run a sweepstake on who you think will win. Perhaps the winner gets to take a class instead of the teacher one afternoon? Bitter sweet challenge Fill a large jar with sweets and ask people to guess how many are in the jar. The lucky winner gets to keep all of the sweets! Make it even more appropriate and choose purple sweets. Picnic games Whilst having your picnic, why not host your own games, it could be anything from playing cards and chess, to Wii/Xbox tournaments or if you are feeling active how about a game of rounders, cricket or football? Food eating competition Fancy being the next Man VS Food? (or Woman for that matter). Challenge yourself to eat a huge plate of food against the clock or perhaps take on the dry cracker challenge? Be a real smoothie Waxing, cutting and shaving hair. These are all great ways of raising peoples eyebrows... often the more you have to get rid of, the more people pay to see it disappear! Nelson's treasure Utilise Nelson’s Treasure Map (included in your pack) as a fun activity to raise additonal funds . Colour in this fun cat mask and once complete cut out, tie string through the holes within the doted area and wear your mask with pride at your picnic. o o o o o DIY Bunting Photocopy as many sheets as you need, decorate, cut out and tie string through hole punched holes in the top corners of each piece. o Use these tent cards to show the cost of items you are selling.
