Welcome to our second annual production sale.
We have been breeding top quality horses for a long time and
we are proud to be able to offer them to you through our sale.
Our focus from day one has been breeding and raising ranch horses. We like big,
stout, cow horses with good feet, bone, and withers. All of our horses are raised outside in
the rocky, steep, high desert of Eastern Oregon. As you look through this catalog you will notice
how many half and three-quarter siblings we are offering. We are proud of this. Our programs are
very focused and we know exactly what type of horse we are trying to produce. We take great pride
in our mares. We have sorted them over the years to make sure we are only breeding the best. Many
of our mares we have started to ride as two year old's to make sure they were good minded, trainable,
and well mannered. Most of our mares are King Fritz bred, as we love that line of horses.
The yearling horses have all been haltered, but have had minimal handling. The two year old's have nice
starts on them. Please make sure to attend the preview at 11:00 am to watch us
ride them. The older horses will speak for themselves.
We would like to express our thanks to the Bentz Family for being a guest consignor in our sale.
We have known the Bentz family for over 15 years and cannot think of anyone we would rather have involved
with our program. The Bentzs' suffered a tragic loss in May of this year. The loss of Mike was devastating
to many people, but certainly impacted his family more than anyone. We mourn his loss, and have huge respect
for the Bentz family for continuing on....just like Mike would want them to. Their horses are raised
outside in big country and developed the way we think all horses should be. Just as importantly,
their program is backed by over 35 years of great quarter horse genetics and a high level of integrity.
Great people, exceptional horses.
We look forward to seeing our friends and customers on sale day. Please do not
hesitate to call if you have any questions prior to the sale.

HAIRPIN ROAN TIGER was a featured stallion in the Leachman Hairpin Cavvy sale in
2004. We purchased him as a two year old for $11,200. We rode "Tig", as we call him,
for four years before an injury brought his saddle horse days to an end. He is still
sound enough to breed mares, and for that we are grateful. "Tig" produces big, stout,
good-minded babies. The “Tig” colts mature with lots of foot and bone, and great backs
as well. One thing we hear over and over is how trainable and quiet “Tig's” sons and
daughters are. Of course this comes as no surprise to us because we have rode a lot
of them. As more and more Hairpin Roan Tiger colts spread throughout the northwest,
his reputation continues to grow. We literally can't keep one around the place because
they sell. Hairpin Roan Tiger is without a doubt going to make a name for himself
among the elite ranch horse sires on the west coast.

SMART JUSTIN has absolutely gotten better and better the longer we have owned
him. We are now crossing him on the Hairpin Roan Tiger daughters and are
absolutely blown away by the cross. He puts such a cool hip structure on his foals.
When you add that to their gorgeous heads and good feet it makes them pretty hard
to get around. We ride “Justin” on the ranch and really enjoy his quiet, calm
disposition. “Justin” injects some serious cow into his babies. He's bred to be a cow
horse and his babies are too.

from Weavers over the years and are impressed with their program “Merada” is really
an eye catching stallion with outstanding conformation and an impeccable pedigree.
By an own son of Peptoboonsmal and out of a granddaughter of Doc O Lena. One
thing that really impresses us about “Merada” is his foot and bone. He's got lots of
both, which is not the norm for cutting horses. He compliments this with a nice short
back and hocks that are low to the ground. You'll be seeing lots of foals by “Merada”
over the next few years.

He's a big, powerful four year old that has got a lot of go and toughness.
He's a fairly high octane gelding that eats up about as much work as you
can give him. He has a great set of withers and is very nimble and catty
on his feet. We've branded on him once or twice, but he's still a little
green with roping. Absolutely no buck from the day we started him. Full

“Jake” is a big, stout gelding that has seen lots of miles. He is 11 years
old and in the prime of his life. He has been a ranch horse from day
one so there isn't much he hasn't seen. “Jake” is very stout on a rope,
he's fantastic to brand calves on, and he has lots of cow. Cinch has
been riding Jake for the last year and has branded lots of calves on
him. This horse can be snorty acting when he's fresh, but it's all for
show. He has no buck and you can turn him out for extended periods
of time without him forgetting he's broke when you saddle him back up.
Jake has been rode by lots of people on the ranch so he is a little hard
mouthed. He wears a # 2 shoe all the way around.

This is a big, stout, ranchy mare that has done a great job for us. She is sired by the great Colonel Blackrock that the Bentz family
owned for a long time. The only reason we are parting with her is because she lost her colt this year. She has run out in big
country most of her life, so she doesn't necessarily like to be loved on or messed with too much. She is halter broke, and can be
pretty protective of her baby. She is a beautiful bay roan color, and usually has foals that have color as well. She sells pasture
exposed to Weavers Boonsmal Doc. She was with him from May 15th to July 9th.

If you like speed, you better take a hard look at this mare. Her dam was 7/8 thoroughbred and loaded with speed. Really a great
pedigree that “Chulita” has. She has had many colts for us over the years. She has always had a roan stud colt when we have
bred her to Hairpin Roan Tiger. She is a gorgeous buckskin color, halter broke, and sweet to handle. She sells pasture exposed to
Hairpin Roan Tiger. She was with him from May 26th to July 9th.

WHAT DO OUR CUSTOMERS SAY?
If you are looking for good using horses, High Desert Quarter Horses are some
of the best. Good minds, good backs, and good feet. These horses are built to
last with lots of cow. I have two and when it comes time to get another horse
you can bet it will be a High Desert Quarter Horse!
-Jake Winona (Prescott, Washington)
I've neighbored M.T. for years. In that time I've seen him ride many of the horses he's raised.
They are willing and easy to get along with, and stay sound with hard use in rough country.
I've gotten several horses from M.T. Over the years, including a Tig son which was the easiest
colt I've ever started. He is one of my favorites and may soon be my top cow horse.
-Mat Carter, Crown Cattle Co (Seneca, OR)
I can’t begin to thank you enough for breeding solid horses. As you know, we bought Tuff
from you as a yearling just over 6 years ago. Unbeknownst to me, my wife Wendy purchased Tuff
as a yearling as a surprise. Man – what a surprise Tuff has been! Big and stout with a great mind
might be an understatement. Tuff is 16.1 and I am guessing 1450 lbs. just like his dad Tig! When we
picked him up, he was a little shy. A week with Wendy, trust was built and we were off to a
fantastic start. Rick Stock – 5 time NRF qualifier started him for us when he came two. We chose
Rick because of his patience and horsemanship. Rick really took a liking to him. When Tuff came 3,
Justin Fields cowboyed on him in CA. Justin gathered cows and branded calves on him for 60 days.
Rick Stock took him back when he came 4 and heeled a couple hundred steers on him at his home in
Taylor, AZ. Rick said, “this horse will be a good one; take your time transitioning him over to the
head side, but he is good to go”. We decided to take it easy on him and let him turn 5 before we put
too much pressure on him. I took him to the AZ mountains several times – just a pleasure to ride.
We sent him to Brock Hanson when he turned 5. Brock said that he really liked Tuff. Tuff wasn’t
perfect in the box but made great improvements in the short time that Brock had him. Caleb
Woodard (PRCA roper) has been heading on him here at home and has nothing but good things to
say. Tuff is looking straight down the bridle now - and man, he will never be out run. Leaving the box
flat and handling steers like nobody’s business!
We picked up Tuff’s full sister (Ima Tuff Chex – bred to Weavers Boonsmal Doc) at last
years sale. What a great purchase! She had a colt May 2nd that we nick-named “Derby”. “Derby”
should be a bay roan, just like his Dad!
We will be paying close attention at the upcoming sale. Don’t be surprised if we show up to
pick up another!!!

IN LOVING MEMORY
MIKE BENTZ
1964-2015
In May of this year we lost a great man. Mike Bentz was not only a
personal friend of ours, but also a great cattleman and horseman. It is still
hard to believe that Mike is not with us anymore. We cherish the memories
and stories that we have of Mike and really appreciate the wisdom and
knowledge he shared. Mike touched lots of people's lives and we will
always miss his great sense of humor, his laugh, and his smile.
HIGH DESERT QUARTER HORSES
M.T. & CORI ANDERSON
B. DIANNE MATHISEN
The Anderson family and Dianne Mathisen
have both had horses for years. 11 years ago we had a
vision of breeding big, stout, ranch horses with great
minds and conformation. We focused heavily on the
King Fritz horses for our mare line. We purchased
Hairpin Roan Tiger in 2004, from Leachmans' in their
sale, and the rest is history. Hairpin Roan Tiger has
sired over 115 head of foals and we could not be
happier with the results.
We are different than some breeders in that we
ride the horses we breed. The Anderson kids have
grown up (and still are) buckarooing on horses we have
raised. As they get older they will help pick up the slack
on the colt starting. We are ranchers, so raising top
quality quarter horses is a perfect fit for us.
We have marketed horses off the ranch as well
as at various ranch horse sales across the west. We
have always worked extremely hard to treat our
customers with a high level of integrity and honesty. If
it is not the right horse for you, we will tell you. This
philosophy has created many great relationships and
we feel that is part of why we have had so many repeat
buyers over the years. We hope you like our horses as
much as we do.
SPUR BRAND RANCH HORSES
BENTZ FAMILY
The Bentz family has been in the
livestock business for a long time. The
family has ranched continuously in Eastern
Oregon since 1925. In addition to operating
a large scale cow/calf operation, the Bentz
family has also been breeding ranch horses
for 35 years.
Their stallion Colonel Blackrock
became the foundation for a great set of
mares. Most of the Spur Brand mares are
Colonel Blackrock daughters. The geldings
sired by Colonel Blackrock have averaged
$7500 over the years. You will appreciate the
consistency in their program.
Spur Brand Ranch Horses is a
family operation. The kids handle most of
the colt starting and halter breaking. The
whole family uses them to buckaroo on. The
Bentzs' know how good the horses are that
they breed because they use them every
day.
If you have any question about the
Spur Brand horses feel free to contact Ethan
at 541-881-6286 or Linda at 541-277-3341.
