Music was found by the Levy County Sheriff ’s Office after being reported by a concerned citizen. Said to be 11 years old and a former race horse, it was hard to imagine this horse who was skeletal and depressed was a fairly young ex-race horse. Dr. Hambleton responded and gave Music IV vitamins and iron. Music weighed just 753 lbs.; at 16 hands he should weigh over 1200 lbs. Then on May 9th two more horses, Softly age 2 and Beauty age 10 came to HPAF after being reported to Levy County Sheriffs Office. Their first week at HPAF was critical for Music and Softly’s survival. They had free choice access to grass, alfalfa hay and an hourly feeding regime of Senior feed. Music progressed steadily in that first week but Softly was another story. Softly’s starvation was more severe and she continued to be weak and depressed during that first seven days. Dr. Hambleton returned with more injections to stimulate her body and appetite and finally we began to see changes. She became more alert and began to walk normally, giving us hope for her survival. Young horses like Softly can develop life threatening complications in the future because their bodies leach minerals from their organs and bones in order to survive as they grow. After gaining only 32 lbs. in her first 9 days, Softly finally began to gain more rapidly, gaining 121 lbs. in 21 days and 238 lbs. in 38 days. Now Softly is strong enough to go out with the other horses to graze and play. The owners of each of these horses have been charged with felony animal cruelty. Tina Worthens with Moo Moo Shirley Smith, Volunteer University of Florida Students Diana and Leland Jackson with Louie Success Stories Storm Damage The HPAF farm was hit over night on June 6th by Tropical storm Colin. Sometime during the night, a large oak tree in the gelding pasture split in half and came down onto two fence lines. We think that the geldings must have been standing near the tree when it came crashing down because they ran through the very sturdy fence on the opposite side of their 20-acre pasture. The geldings know their fences and that there is a potent electric wire along the top to discourage cribbing and a certain donkey from walking through the fence boards. They must have been very scared to run through the fence. None of the geldings were injured but Momma, the Paso mare from the main herd, got in with the geldings and either was kicked or ran into a post while trying to get away from the pursuing geldings. Dr Hambleton came right away to treat her broken nose. He said there was nothing that could be done and that the swelling would subside from treatment and time. A very special thank you to Sam Osborne for making the emergency repairs to the fence after the storm. Thank you Don Manuchia! We want to thank Don once again for sponsoring the production and mailing of previous newsletters and this current issue. He has been one of our loyal supporters and we can not thank him enough for all of his contributions over the years for the horses. We are so greatful to have such a compassionate and amazing friend.
