More Horses Saved by HPAF Supporters
April and May brought new horses to HPAF. Music was found by the Levy County Sheriff ’s Office after
being reported by a concerned citizen. Said to be 11 years old and a former race horse, it was hard to
imagine this horse who was skeletal and depressed was a fairly young ex-race horse. Dr. Hambleton
responded and gave Music IV vitamins and iron. Music weighed just 753 lbs.; at 16 hands he should
weigh over 1200 lbs.
Then on May 9th two more horses, Softly age 2 and Beauty age 10 came to HPAF after being reported to
Levy County Sheriffs Office. Their first week at HPAF was critical for Music and Softly’s survival. They
had free choice access to grass, alfalfa hay and an hourly feeding regime of Senior feed. Music
progressed steadily in that first week but Softly was another story. Softly’s starvation was more severe
and she continued to be weak and depressed during that first seven days. Dr. Hambleton returned with
more injections to stimulate her body and appetite and finally we began to see changes. She became more
alert and began to walk normally, giving us hope for her survival. Young horses like Softly can develop
life threatening complications in the future because their bodies leach minerals from their organs and
bones in order to survive as they grow. After gaining only 32 lbs. in her first 9 days, Softly finally began to
gain more rapidly, gaining 121 lbs. in 21 days and 238 lbs. in 38 days. Now Softly is strong enough to go
out with the other horses to graze and play. The owners of each of these horses have been charged with
felony animal cruelty.

Thank you B-C Foundation Station
B-C Foundation Station in Reddick has had Pilgrim in
development this month. B-C took Pilgrim in their
program that helps to re-home qualified rescued horses
into therapeutic riding programs. Their Horses Helping
Humans program educates both horses and staff in the
areas of horse development and management. Pilgrim
will be placed with Stirrups N' Strides Therapeutic
Riding Center in Citra, continuing their mission of
Pilgrim
Katie
helping Nonprofits with organizational support through
and Chris Cook
and Chris Cook
natural horsemanship and business leadership.
Chris Cook from B-C also came to the HPAF farm for a Senior Staff Workshop. He offered new strategies in
horse development and program development for the HPAF Team. We are so grateful to the B-C Foundation
Station for their support of HPAF with horse and business development.
Jake Biernbaum
and Dixie
Dixie was accepted into The Parelli Foundation’s Rehoming 4 Life
Challenge and Adoption Program, that is matching up to 20 rescue
horses of varying breeds from all around the country with Licensed
Parelli Professionals who will develop the horses to their full potential
using Natural Horsemanship principles. The horses will be developed
for more than a year by their Professional and then be showcased for
adoption at the Parelli Foundation’s first major horse event – FOR
THE HORSE – Festival Magnifico, May 5 – 7th, 2017 in the heart of
Texas. Each horse will take part in an adoption process that will match
them to their ideal forever home. Please watch HPAF and B-C
Foundation Station’s Facebook Pages for updates on Dixie’s progress!

April brought horse lovers together for a great event. The
Seventh Annual Horses Helping Horses event put on by
the Arredondo Dressage Society at Canterbury on April
23rd in Newberry went splendidly. This year the event
was combined with ASPCA Help a Horse Day.
We are so grateful to the members of the Arredondo
Dressage Society for once again putting on this wonderful
annual event. Thank you to everyone who donated their
goods, services and money to make it successful. The
event raised over $8000 for the horses. We could not be
more grateful to everyone involved.

Success Stories
Storm Damage
The HPAF farm was hit over night on June 6th by Tropical storm Colin. Sometime during the night, a
large oak tree in the gelding pasture split in half and came down onto two fence lines. We think that the
geldings must have been standing near the tree when it came crashing down because they ran through
the very sturdy fence on the opposite side of their 20-acre pasture. The geldings know their fences and
that there is a potent electric wire along the top to discourage cribbing and a certain donkey from
walking through the fence boards. They must have been very scared to run through the fence.
None of the geldings were injured but Momma, the Paso mare from the main herd, got in with the
geldings and either was kicked or ran into a post while trying to get away from the pursuing
geldings. Dr Hambleton came right away to treat her broken nose. He said there was nothing that could
be done and that the swelling would subside from treatment and time.
A very special thank you to Sam Osborne for making the emergency repairs to the fence after the storm.
Thank you Don Manuchia!
We want to thank Don once again for sponsoring the production and mailing of previous
newsletters and this current issue. He has been one of our loyal supporters and we can not
thank him enough for all of his contributions over the years for the horses. We are so greatful
to have such a compassionate and amazing friend.
