Travels
“For my part,
I travel not to go anywhere,
but to go; I travel for travel’s
sake. And to write about it
afterwards […]
But the great affair
is to move; to feel the needs
and hitches of life a little more
early, to get down off
this feather bed of civilisation,
and to find the globe granite
underfoot and strewn with
cutting flints.”
The Association
“Sur le Chemin
de R.L. Stevenson”
The path pioneered by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1878 links the
départements of Haute-Loire, Ardèche, Lozère and Gard, deep
in the Massif Central, and offers daily discoveries and surprises.
The association “Sur le Chemin de Robert Louis Stevenson” was
created in 1994 with the aim of promoting this itinerary and
helping the constantly growing number of walkers to plan their
trip on the GR®70 from Le Puy-en-Velay to Alès.
The Association is a network with a people-centred approach
numbering over a hundred tourism professionals known as
“Relais Stevenson” from Le-Puy-en-Velay to Alès, who offer
accommodation, catering, donkey hire, holiday planning, cultural speakers and sites, and transport of people and luggage. They
are all located on the Trail or nearby. Their contact details are
included in this brochure to help you organize your trip to suit
your own requirements.

Towards responsible tourism
Whether you are a long-distance walker or just a short-term
visitor, you can play your part in the conservation of these
invaluable treasures if you abide by some common sense rules. You
can thereby contribute to the protection of the environment, the
natural heritage, the local population and its activities, and your
fellow-walkers. Your tolerant and eco-friendly attitude will ensure
that future generations will find this countryside in the same condition as it was when Stevenson discovered it over a century ago.
Tailor-made trip
Robert Louis
Stevenson,
“avant-garde” hiker !
On 22 September 1878, the young Scottish writer Robert Louis
Stevenson left Le-Monastier-sur-Gazeille (Haute-Loire) with
his donkey Modestine. Twelve days, two-hundred-and-twenty
kilometres and many adventures later, he arrived at Saint-Jeandu-Gard.
He had two reasons for that trip: to recover from the return to
America of Fanny Osbourne (whom he would eventually marry
a few years later), and to discover the land of the Protestant
Camisards…
His book entitled Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes -largely
inspired by his travel diary- was published in 1879, followed a
few years later by the famous Treasure Island and The Strange
Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
This book has made it possible to trace his route, which has since
become the Stevenson Trail (GR® 70 Le Chemin de Stevenson).
This marked public hiking trail enables walkers to follow in the
footsteps of the Francophile Scottish adventurer.
“The merchant asked me for one of my cards; for he said it would
be something to talk of in the future this donkey-driving, English
amateur vagrant.”
Whether you decide to walk the whole way or only a few stages,
make sure you plan your trip well in advance!
This brochure aims to give you all the necessary information
so that you can plan your trip to suit your wishes, either by
organizing it yourself or by using the skills and experience of a
professional.
You will find a map at the end of this brochure to help you visualize the route, and a list of all logos on the back.
The Association has brought together a large number of professionals to meet your expectations. For more information on what
they have to offer, feel free to contact them directly.
On your own or accompanied, as a group, as a family, on foot,
in the company of a donkey, on a mountain bike or on horseback…
there are so many different ways to discover the Stevenson Trail!
Useful tips
The Stevenson Trail is a mid-altitude trail. Even though it does not
present any particular dangers (dizzyingly steep sections, etc.), it
is nonetheless a wilderness trail: often stony, at times muddy, and
consisting of a succession of uphill and downhill stretches with at
times substantial changes in altitude, which require hikers to be
in good physical shape. Hikers must wear appropriate footwear
for walking on the uneven ground and be equipped according to
the weather forecast. They must also set off with food and water
reserves that are adapted to the hike. Whilst the Stevenson Trail is
way-marked, it crosses many GR®, and you will need a guidebook
and/or maps to orientate yourself properly.

The long-distance hiking trails
The Stevenson Trail (GR® 70) has become recognised as one of the
great French hiking trails alongside the GR®20, the St James’ Trail
and the GR®5.
For some years, the Association Sur le chemin de R.L.Stevenson
has been approaching the managers of the other French longdistance hiking trails, especially the Grande Traversée des Alpes
(Great Alp Crossing) and the Grandes Traversées du Jura. With
the support of the French hiking federation FFRandonnée, the
Association has tried to instigate the creation of a network of
French long-distance hiking trails.
Stevenson in Europe
The association “Sur le chemin de Stevenson” is an active member of the European network “In the Footsteps of Robert Louis
Stevenson”.
The network brings together private and public organisations
from Scotland, England, Belgium and various parts of France
(Forest of Fontainebleau, northern Canals, Cévennes). Its objective is to highlight Stevenson’s works and voyages, and to promote
the areas through which the author travelled.
Throughout the year, each organisation belonging to the network
arranges activities in its area on the theme of Stevenson, both for a
wide local public and visitors: hikes on foot or with a donkey, trips
by canoe or bike; cultural and heritage visits; contemporary art
exhibitions; conferences; projections; educational activities and
workshops, and more.
Several times a year, the network members meet to keep each
other informed about their respective activities and to reflect on
ways in which their areas might be further enhanced using the fact
that Stevenson travelled through them.
The first meeting of trail managers took place in Florac in late
November 2014, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the
Association. Since then, a network has been taking shape that
works to:
rKPJOUMZQSPNPUFMPOHEJTUBODFIJLJOHBOEFBDIPGPVSUSBJMT
rDPNNVOJDBUFJOQVCMJDBCPVUUIFWBMVFTBOECFOFđUTPGTVDI
hiking;
rFYDIBOHFPVSFYQFSJFODFTBOEHPPEQSBDUJDFTGPSTUSVDUVSJOH
and animating our Trails and areas;
r DPOEVDU SFTFBSDI JOUP MPOHEJTUBODF IJLJOH FTQFDJBMMZ JUT
social aspects, its links to health and personal development, and
reflect philosophically on hiking and its values.
The Association Sur le chemin de R.L. Stevenson is part of this
network’s operational team, alongside FFRandonnée and the
Grande Traversée des Alpes, and helps to coordinate the network.
In 2015, the Network was granted the “Cultural Route of the
Council of Europe” certification, a European award which will
give the territories concerned greater international visibility.

Hiking Trips
with
Donkeys
If you are travelling with a donkey, your furry friend
will “try” you, even though it will be better trained than
Modestine. A donkey can be obedient but is above all an intelligent creature who will adapt to whoever is leading it. This
is why children should only lead with the help of an adult
at first. A donkey is then the ideal companion: gentle and
friendly, it soon becomes the central character of the party,
sometimes trying to share your picnic or occasionally stopping
to wait for a walker who has been left behind.
Enjoy your walk but keep this in mind: by travelling with
a donkey you are taking a risk – that of not being able to do
without it in the future!

Almost all accommodation is open from Easter to the end of October. For other periods, check details on www.chemin-stevenson.org.
You are strongly advised to book ahead.
Please note that accommodation providers prefer to welcome
hikers after 4 p.m. If you wish to arrive earlier in the day, please
remember that you must alert your hosts in advance. Thank you.
The accommodation you choose for evening meals and overnight
stays during your hike will mainly be of the “family” kind. These
establishments rarely conform to the rules of the urban hospitality trade. Whilst the personal welcome must be of a consistently
high quality, you should not expect “hotel norms”.
This is the charm of such places.
The following maps highlight the four different geographical
areas. However, please note the maps are only intended to help you
decide on where to stop and stay. They are not meant to replace the
relevant ordnance-survey type maps, which will be essential.

La Fédération Française
de Randonnée
In 1993, the main French walkers association Fédération
Française de Randonnée (FFRandonnée) signposted the
Stevenson Trail, thus creating the GR® 70 between Le-Monastiersur-Gazeille and Saint-Jean-du-Gard. To facilitate access to this
historic path, it has now been extended from Le Puy to Alès.
Marking is carried out by volunteers from the local committees
of Haute-Loire, Lozère, Ardèche and Gard.
Finally, the FFR co-publishes with Chamina Edition the GR®70
guide book, an invaluable help for walkers together with the
relevant IGN 1/25th maps.

Please be aware that transport is often the main difficulty for walkers when planning their trips. The GR®70 long-distance path passes
through small villages, many of which are not served by bus or rail.
Before beginning your walk, remember to plan your return journey
taking into account existing services.
There are train services at both Le-Puy-en-Velay and Alès, at the
beginning and end of the trail. This makes access to the GR®70 easy.

Identification of villages
on the Stevenson Trail
Several municipalities on the GR ® 70
had asked the Stevenson Association to identify them as being on
the Stevenson Trail. To standardize
publicity materials, the Association
took the initiative of producing a
common pictorial representation
that strengthens the image of the
areas crossed by the Trail for locals,
visitors and hikers alike.

In collaboration with the municipalities, new signposts are springing up
along the Trail.

Information
on bedbugs
The bedbug is an insect with a flattened oval body, 5 to 7 mm long.
Over the past few years, this pest has
established itself all over France, and
especially in hikers’ accommodation.
Bedbugs feed on human blood, particularly at night. Their bites can at
times be very itchy.
“As the day goes on, the traveller moves
from the one extreme towards the other.
He becomes more and more incorporated
with the material landscape, and the
open-air drunkenness grows upon him
with great strides, until he posts along
the road, and sees everything about him,
as in a cheerful dream.”
Virginibus Puerisque “On Walking Tours”
Bedbugs get around by lodging in
hikers’ sleeping bags and duvets, and
moving from accommodation to
accommodation along hiking routes.
Silence is a bedbug’s best friend. Not talking about it allows it
to proliferate.
That is why information circulates freely inside the Stevenson
network. Accommodation providers belonging to the network
are informed and asked to carry out regular checks and preventative treatments in their facilities. Note that the presence of
bedbugs in an establishment is not in any way a consequence of
bad hygiene.
Hikers have their part to play in controlling this plague by
following some basic rules:
- Check the inside of your duvet or sleeping bag every day before
packing it, and regularly and closely examine the contents of
your rucksack
- Preventatively treat your duvet, luggage and personal effects
(inside and outside)
- If you have been bitten or suspect that there are bedbugs in
your accommodation, tell the owner
- Carefully follow the instructions given by each accommodation provider
- When reserving accommodation, do not hesitate to ask the
owners whether they preventatively treat their bedrooms, and
if so, how.

“I have been
after an adventure all my life,
a pure dispassionate adventure, such as befell early
and heroic voyagers; and thus to be found
by morning in a random woodside nook
in Gevaudan -not knowing north from south,
as strange to my surroundings
as the first man upon the earth,
an inland castaway- was to find a fraction
of my day-dreams realised.”
