Ideal Body Mass Index is considered within the range of 18.5-24.9.
The higher your BMI is, the higher your risk is of developing diseases like heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.
People with BMI values less than 18.5 are considered underweight.
For people who have a BMI greater than or equal to 30, or those who are at moderate risk (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors, the guidelines recommend weight loss.
Individuals with dense muscle mass may have a high BMI score but very little body fat. For these people the waist circumference or body fat measurement may be indicated.
Even a small weight loss (just 10 percent of your current weight) will help to lower your risk of developing diseases associated with increased weight.
People who are at moderate risk, do not have a high waist measurement, and have less than two risk factors may need to prevent further weight gain rather than lose weight.
Talk to your doctor to see if you are at an increased risk and if you should lose weight. Your doctor will evaluate your BMI, waist measurement, and other risk factors for heart disease.
People who are at moderate risk have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol or other lipid disorders, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.
For information on weight loss programs or how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, contact the Health and Wellness department at 812-996-2399.
