But you don’t have to go very far to find biting insects and ticks. Take some simple steps this summer to prevent bites and diseases spread by bugs. *Only use a mower with a control that stops the mower blade from moving if the handle is let go. 1. *Prevent injuries from flying objects by picking up objects from the lawn before mowing. 2. 3. Use an effective insect repellent. Be sure to use one that contains either: DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535 or Oil of lemon eucalyptus. Be sure to FOLLOW LABEL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE. Make your backyard a tick/mosquitosafe zone. Keep your backyard free of standing water (in containers, pet dishes, clogged rain gutters, toys etc.) Check for ticks as soon as you come back inside. Remove them as soon as you find them. Contact our office for more information on this topic. *Make sure that sturdy shoes are worn while mowing. *Wear hearing and eye protection. *Do not pull the mower backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary (always look behind you before going in reverse). *Do not allow children to ride as passengers on ride-on mowers. *Drive up and down slopes, not across to prevent mower rollover. What an opportunity to remind everyone the value and importance of fruits and vegetable in a healthy diet!! Please remember that eating a diet consisting of the recommended amounts of fruits and veggies, may help to lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes as well as helping with decreasing bone loss and protecting against some cancers. The potassium they provide could even help prevent the formation of kidney stones!! The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to consume 3-5 servings of vegetable a day (varies depending on age and gender). Tips to increase consumption: *Make it a point to buy more fruits and veggies. *Purchase convenience sizes. *Package them in snack size servings. *Include fruit in yogurt, salads, cereal, ice-cream and other desserts. *Incorporate vegetables in soups, stews, pies, wraps and sandwiches. Remember...fruits and veggies can help with your overall health in so many ways!! Eat some today!!! National CPR & AED Awareness Week In 2008, Congress designated the first week of June for observation of National CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Awareness Week. The goal was to encourage all the states, cities and towns to establish organized programs which would provide CPR and AED training to the public. Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. Even if CPR is performed, defibrillation with an AED is required to stop the abnormal rhythm and restore a normal heart rhythm. AED devices can actually lead to recovery, while CPR alone most often only maintains stasis until more advanced lifesaving care arrives. Give the gift of life and take a CPR/AED class today!! Call Johnson County Community Health Services (660-7476121) to find out when our next class is being held!! National Cancer Survivors Day®—June 5th National Cancer Survivors Day® is an annual Celebration of Life that is held on the first Sunday in June every year. It is a CELEBRATION for those who have survived, an INSPIRATION for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of SUPPORT for families and an OUTREACH to the community. This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones and recognize those who have supported them along the way.
