Why tweet? by Twiggy Smith When I watch a sports event or an exciting reality show, I switch off my phone and don’t move or talk to anyone. Breaks are a time to race to the kitchen to grab a snack or a drink. So I really don’t understand people who spend ages sending or reading messages on Twitter. How many goals or points do they miss as they type out their tweets? The 2012 Superbowl match, which decides the American Football champions, set a new record for the number of tweets sent each second. First of all, while Madonna was performing a concert during a break half-way through the match, 10,245 tweets were sent per second. This was a new record in the USA. However, it didn’t last long. By the end of the game, 12,233 tweets were sent every second! That, though, is the record for English language tweets. When the film Castle in the Sky was shown on Japanese TV in December 2011, over 25,000 people were sending tweets every second! This is an animated film from the 1980s. It has won several awards but I still don’t understand why so many people wanted to tweet during it. What were they saying and why couldn’t they wait until it had finished? I have no idea! It’s not that I’m against Twitter. I use it and so do my friends but not all the time. We don’t write about what we are eating or any of those really boring things that some people write. We usually communicate on Twitter when we are trying to organise events at school, like basketball practice. Twitter is great but some users seem to think that their opinions on what’s going on are more important than the event itself. How would they feel if they were performing on stage and, instead of watching them, their parents were staring at their phones sending tweets? 1 2 3 4 5 6 4 słuchanie When the writer is watching a sports event on TV, she stays in front of the television until it has finished completely. The writer says that sending tweets during sports events may mean that people don’t always see the important action. Madonna’s half-time show doesn’t hold the record for the most amount of tweets per second. The writer is not surprised that a lot of people were tweeting during Castle in the Sky. The writer thinks her friends’ messages on Twitter aren’t boring. The main idea of the text is that more people should use Twitter. It is 1 language, the special language used to communicate with deaf people. Some of these students may know someone who is deaf or want to 2 care of deaf people, but this isn’t the only reason why its popularity has increased in recent years. Most students are simply interested in the language and want to find out more about it. Others are told that if they 3 the language, it would be easier for them to find a job.
