TRADITIONAL MACHINES ARE ESSENTIALLY
A DRINKS FACTORY IN A BOX
With many moving parts, reliability can
be poor and drink quality less consistent.
Traditional machines also select and mix
ingredients in the machine, meaning drink
quality suffers and cross-contamination of
flavours can be an issue.
With a rigorous cleaning process to follow,
maintenance on these machines can be
time consuming. KLIX® machines simply
add water, minimising the time required
to clean them.
Hoppers in traditional machines need
to be filled with ingredients which can
be bulky and hard to handle. Difficulty
filling the machine can lead to spillage
and unnecessary waste.
The KLIX® In-cup system ensures that
filling the machine is hassle-free.
Why does KLIX® use plastic cups?
KLIX® uses plastic cups to deliver the In-cup
system. Following a detailed review of plastic
and paper cups, KLIX® continues to support
the use of plastic cups as the preferred
choice for delivering recyclability alongside
convenience and reliability.*

Reliability
KLIX® cups are filled with pre-mixed ingredients in our factory. The cups then lock together to form a stack and are hygienically sealed until
installation. Plastic cups are the most durable option for the KLIX® machine, allowing more to be included in one stack providing greater reliability
and convenience.
Water use
Compared with the paper alternative, the plastic cup used 90% less water in the production of the cup1. Paper cups require significant water
addition for cleaning, pulping and forming the paper for final use in a cup.
Waste water
Manufacturing paper requires turning the wood into wood chips which are heavily washed and bleached. The entire process requires a
substantial amount of water. About 580 times as much waste water is produced during the manufacture of a paper cup as when a polystyrene
one is made2. The waste chemicals are mainly removed from the water but there are still at least 10 times more chemical waste water
than for polystyrene3.
Carbon intensity
Overall, plastic cups contribute a 35% greater carbon impact than paper cups, primarily due to the carbon content of plastics and the energy
intensive raw material extraction of oils and gases.

Although plastic cups generally degrade slower, the potential for them to be redirected from landfill is higher (depending on human behaviour)
as they are more easily and widely reused and recycled than paper cups4. In addition, recycled paper is generally not strong enough to hold hot
liquid again and concerns over hygiene requirements make it more difficult to use recycled paper cups5.
