2011 Volume 1 Fifty years of Lambs Farm: A rich history and future of promise inside: page 2: Letter from the president and CEO page 4: Lambs Farm celebrates with holiday cheer While the Beatles, VW bugs and the peace sign emerged, shifting popular culture, so too began the questioning of the status quo during the mighty decade referred to now as “The 60s”. Our Co-Founders, Corinne Owen and Bob Terese, also questioned the status quo as pioneers with a vision, certain in their belief that men and women with developmental disabilities could be taught consequential skills and hold meaningful positions, where there existed no proof in this possibility at the time. page 5: Special Olympics round up our mission: Helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives and connecting with the human spirit in us all. www.lambsfarm.org Fifty years ago, those with developmental disabilities were shunned from society, while organizations caring for them existed simply to keep them comfortable and occupied. Yet, undaunted, in a small pet shop on Chicago’s State Street, change had begun, a vision had taken flight. Twelve men and women with developmental disabilities cared for animals, assisted customers and successfully attended to the myriad details required to keep a business running smoothly. We grew and flourished. In just four short years, a move was made north, to our present campus, thanks to another forward thinking individual, W. Clement Stone, who bore witness to the unprecedented success of our Founders’ vision. The Lambs Farm, as we know it today, was truly born. Here, our Participants gained a life of independence and choices, rich social lives on campus, as well as within the community, enrichment in the pursuit of hobbies and interests and a multitude of employment options. To think, previous to our Founders, what we now hold as truth did not exist; our victories becoming a model for the rest of the (Continued on page 3) ShredStation Express partners with Lambs Farm Partnerships are important to Lambs Farm because they help us continue providing quality care and support for the men and women we serve. Those businesses, organizations and individuals choose to work with Lambs Farm because we are a reputable and wellrespected organization that makes a difference in the communities we serve, and by partnering with us, they, too, are affecting change. Lambs Farm is proud to announce that we have entered into a strategic partnership with ShredStation Express, located next to Lambs Farm on Lambs Lane. The company will generously donate a portion of their profits to help Lambs Farm further its mission of helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives. Please remember to call ShredStation Express at 847.367.4600 whenever you have shredding needs. 2 From the President and CEO’s desk... As most remarkable things in history, Lambs Farm started in 1961 as an idea: there must be more for people with developmental disabilities than is being offered today. The idea, of course, was formed out of need for those we now serve, compassion by our CoFounders, and hope from families everywhere with nowhere to turn; and grew to reality through nothing less than enormous hard work, patience, and sacrifice. As we sit here today, no one could have envisioned what that idea would mean to hundreds of people with developmental disabilities who are living happy, productive lives. Harder to imagine is what life would have been like for them had that idea never been spawned. It is even harder to realize how many years have passed. So, it has finally arrived – the 50th year of our existence. We have thought, created, and planned for more than a year now, and we are ready. Events and initiatives have been scheduled to hopefully attract and engage a variety of constituencies, both old and new. In addition to reaching out to a greater number of people, along the way we hope to honor those who have contributed so much to our longevity - financially, emotionally, and literally of themselves. It is a humbling experience to adequately acknowledge something that is in many ways difficult even to articulate. So many have come and gone, all in some way leaving their mark - from our Co-Founders, to the families who helped start it all and those who worked to keep it going through the years, our dedicated staff, our donors and volunteers, those who have supported our businesses, and our vendors. An eclectic group certainly, but one with a common bond forged from their belief in and support of the mission of Lambs Farm. What better way to honor those who have meant so much to us throughout our history than with the promise of the future. Our new logo, tagline and mission statement represent images of Lambs Farm that are more contemporary and we believe better describe our mission and how we work to achieve it. The essence of our new image reinforces the reality that the human spirit needs more than just physical nourishment to survive, and that social interaction and productive work are equally essential. It is about helping people, of course; but also allows those people the self-respect and dignity gained from helping themselves. It is what one conjures up when thinking of our Participants, whose courage and tenacity to face each day’s challenges is nothing short of remarkable. As it always has been for all those we honor today, the reward is in knowing that your investment in the people of Lambs Farm has made a significant difference in their lives. Much more than that, you have been part of something very special, the creation of a nurturing environment that continues to impact all people who come in contact with it: Lambs Farm - a place Where People Grow. celebrating 50 years where people grow of service (continued from cover) world. Our growth is measurable and we’re far from done. As we prepare for our next halfcentury of service, our staff took a look at what Lambs Farm means to those of us “inside”, as well as the community, what we do best, and how we relate to the world at large. What we know is that Lambs Farm is a place where people grow…Participants, families, staff and visitors alike. The time has come to better communicate what Lambs Farm does, and its benefit to those around us. Excitedly, we have taken on the task of a new brand image and message not only describing what we do and how we do it, but demonstrating our commitment to continued growth and change. We’re embracing our future by encouraging all that come in contact with the Farm to grow with us. Our new logo and tag line, “Lambs Farm - Where People Grow”, is intended to do just that. During this upcoming year you will see changes taking place, new signage, on and off campus, a new look to communication pieces, increased media exposure, fresh new packaging and products, to name but a few, as we prepare to embark on this next leg of our collective journey. We’re planning many events for you to celebrate this momentous occasion with us. These events are designed for everyone, Participants, families, donors, volunteers and community members, so that all may join us in commemorating where we’ve been, engage in where we’re going, and celebrate all we have achieved, together. The short list includes our first gala in 10 years, an updated golf outing, a 60s day on the Farm, an Opera event, a Participant dinner theater, reprising Annie, as well as our ever popular annual events such as Woofstock, Haunted Harvest and Holiday Brunches, to name but a few, all with a 50th anniversary twist. We look forward to celebrating with those of you who have helped make what we do possible. We invite you to join us, as we rededicate ourselves to our CoFounders’ vision and prepare to make a powerful difference in the lives of those with developmental disabilities for the next 50 years and beyond. Family members bring unique event to Lambs Farm There are several meaningful ways to support Lambs Farm. In addition to frequenting our businesses, you may choose to volunteer your time, help raise money or donate yourself. You may also wish to create an event, which is what Delia McVoy and Karen McVoy, a Lambs Farm mother and sister have done. They are organizing a special concert, featuring Karen, an internationally acclaimed soprano, to benefit Lambs Farm. The opera event will be held at Nichols Concert Hall of the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston on July 31. Karen is delighted to be returning to her hometown of Chicago where she began her career with the famed Chicago Children’s Choir. From opera to recital, from gospel to art songs, her artistry speaks for itself. This exceptional event will not only delight audiences but will also pay a special tribute to our 50th anniversary. For information regarding this event and available sponsorship opportunities, please contact Nikki Bonamarte at 847.990.3733 or [email protected]. Sincerely, Dianne M. Wining and dining for Lambs Farm Lambs Farm commuter, Nicolas Loustaunau, and his parents recently raised nearly $2,000 for Lambs Farm’s programs through several fundraising events. Nicolas, along with his parents Mari and Jean-Marc, hosted a wine tasting event, raffle and mini Popcorn Days at their restaurant, Café Pyrenees, in Libertyville. Nicolas said he was interested in hosting the events because he has truly enjoyed his time working at Lambs Farm, first in the Pet Shop and now in the Restaurant. Because of the success of the previous events, Nicolas is busy planning new events for 2011. The Lambs Farm floor hockey team poses together after securing the state championship title. Special Olympics round up – We are the champions! In only its third year, the Lambs Farm Black Sheep floor hockey team stormed the fall state competition in November and came home with gold medals and the championship trophy. The Black Sheep were placed in a division with Hersey and Vernon Hills high schools – teams we had faced earlier this year. The previous matches were less than satisfying with a loss to Hersey and a tie with Vernon Hills. But the Black Sheep were certain this time the results would be more pleasing. The team focused on defense throughout the games, allowing only four goals in two games. When all was said and done, the teammates gathered together to raise the trophy in celebration of their hard work and accomplishment. Congratulations! In additional sporting news, Lambs Farm hosted the Special Olympics District snowshoeing competition in early January. This is the first time we’ve hosted a Special Olympics event, and nearly 100 athletes from Lake and McHenry counties attended with Andy Wernick leads the pack in the Special Olympics snowshoeing race. their families. Our men and women were thrilled to welcome so many people to their home and were delighted in their role of hosts. Although there were only a few flurries of snow in the air, the event was a lot of fun as friends became competitors only for a race, and then became friends again. Lambs Farm’s athletes earned 17 medals and one ribbon. Nice job! Lambs Farm’s Annual Golf Day in Memory of Jack Stein will be held on Tuesday, July 19 at ThunderHawk Golf Club in Beach Park. In honor of our 50th anniversary celebration, we are initiating a new format to offer two shotgun starts – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
