The California-based organization has unique fund drives in which people are asked to have their heads shaved, the hair going to children suffering from cancer. “We were at dinner,” said Lien, 22, of Hickory NC. “We thought about it and did it.” Lien, who had a great mop of hair, said it was tougher on Dwyer to agree to be shorn. “He thought it wouldn’t grow back,” Lien joked. The two will soon depart for Amsterdam, Netherlands, to represent the U.S. in the White House Junior International bridge tournament. Greenberg, Hand win Mixed Pairs again Gail Greenberg and Jeff Hand, 2008 winners of the Rockwell Mixed Pairs, thought they had been edged out of a second victory in the event by four-tenths of a matchpoint. Thanks to a scoring correction, they moved into first by sixth-tenths of a matchpoint in one of the closest finishes ever in the event. Three years ago in Detroit, they won the Mixed Pairs by about one-quarter of a board. Second place went to Lloyd Arvedon of Natick continued on page 13 Most high seeds still playing in Vanderbilt The team captained by Mark Gordon and seeded ninth in the Vanderbilt field was the only one of the top seeds to fall in the second full day of play in the knockout event. Gordon lost to the original No. 41 seed led by Meng Kang, of Beijing, China. His teammates include one other player from China – Shaolin Sun – and four who live in the U.S.: Xiaodong Shi, Naperville IL; Jiang Gu, Mountain Lakes NJ; Jian-Jian Wang, Clarksville MD, and Hailong Ao, Herndon VA. Gordon’s teammates were Pratap Rajadhyaksha, Alan Sontag, David Berkowitz, Terje Aa and Jorgen Molberg. Most other high seeds cruised, but No. 3 John Diamond had to rally in the fourth quarter to make it to today’s round of 16. Yes, you’d rather have your doubleton in a black suit, but what’s a guy to do? On the lead of the ♦K, you win the ace, play a heart to the ace for the trump finesse. You draw the last trump and play the ♦J. East wins and exits with a spade (a club endplays his partner at once). You win the ♠A, cash the ♠K, pitch your spade loser on the ♦10, ruff a spade and lead a club to the jack for the endplay. The cards did indeed lie precisely this way, except that the ♣K and ♣8 were interchanged, so no endplay was necessary to bring home the game. The whole trip reminds the Insider of trying to find the side game on day two of an NABC. Life Master News Michael Moss, a Grand Life Master of New York NY, has earned his 15,000th masterpoint. Moss has six NABC titles and has finished second five times. He has played internationally and is ranked as a International Master by the World Bridge Federation. Moss has two second-place finishes in world play. Cindy Henderson of Northfield IL earned her gold card playing in the Tuesday night Swiss Teams with Teri Schneider of Northbrook IL. Their teammates were Judy Auer and Eileen Berwin, both of Columbus OH. Jan Gray and Jan Iliff, both of Franklin TN, earned Life Master rank. Gray needed .93 gold points and Iliff needed .12. They’ve won more than five gold in the Monday-Wednesday Knockout Teams. Their teammates were Judy Gandee, Sharon Ricciardi and Helen Hulse, all of Franklin TN. Cheryl Clark of Dallas TX and Beverly Broomhead of Villa Hills KY are new Life Masters. Clark needed .27 gold and Broomhead needed 4.8. They have won 6.90 to date in the Knockout Teams. I agree that it’s not a great slam, but curiously if you play for clubs to split you need very little more than the trump break. You play three rounds of clubs, ruffing in dummy, then cash the ♦A and ♦K. Now your line will hinge on who has the long diamond. If it is West, you should cash the ♥A and ♥K, then run clubs. As the cards lie, West can ruff in when he likes, but if he has a third heart to play, you ruff and hope the hearts come in. If he has only spades, as in the diagram, you will endplay him when he ruffs the club to give you a spade trick and you can then crossruff the rest. If West discards on your two club winners, you elope will all your remaining trumps, ruffing two hearts in dummy and a spade in hand. But what if East has the long diamond? In that case, you can play the same line, but East gets to ruff away one of your winners – that means you will need the ruffing spade finesse. Finally, if clubs are 4-2 with East having the shortage so that he can overruff at trick four, you will need for him to have three diamonds and the ♥Q doubleton or tripleton onside. Daily Bulletin Page 3 JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS You gotta have heart By Marti Ronemus Another day of excitement, world-class bridge, new people. Have you been able to sandwich a tour of the Bluegrass country into your days? If you can do so, don’t miss some of the big horse farms. When you see how the horses live and are treated, you might start wishing that you would be reincarnated as a world-class runner! Writing these articles has gotten me thinking about some of the various horses in my life. People who’ve not spent a lot of time with horses probably think they are all pretty much the same, and would be astonished to find out how much their personalities differ. My father’s first racehorse was a mare named Sandy Seattle. Dad bought her for the princely sum of $300 (in 1958), and she was the perfect starter horse. One reason he selected Standardbreds was he could be actively involved in the training, and Sandy was a doll. She wasn’t temperamental, so Dad could drive her for her practice miles, learning as he went. She was all business, and did whatever she was asked to do – except run really fast! My sisters and I never got emotionally involved with Sandy: she was always polite, but not really interested in us. We learned from her, though…how to groom a horse, how to bathe them, how to (sigh) clean up after them. Even though she never won a race for my dad, she was worth a million bucks in experience. Then there was Jaws. I can’t remember the horse’s real name, but you can guess why his stable name was Jaws. We kids were forbidden to enter the barn unless he was firmly locked in his stall. He was the exact opposite of Sandy. Her manners were perfect, but she couldn’t run. Jaws paced like the wind, but was unmanageable, and even though he did some serious winning for my father, Dad had to get rid of him because of his temperament. And Lana, my father’s first real winner, was a sweetheart! She was built dainty and small, not the conformation of a big winner. Lana was a flirt, curious, loved us kids, would grab hold of a shirt sleeve and shake it playfully. She adored being groomed, would nibble at the brushes, making happy grunts. Bidding commentary: As West, it is wiser not to redouble with 11+ HCP when you have a two-suited hand. Her excitement could make her hard to manage, so whoever was “dressing” her would have to fool her and maneuver her into position without her seeing what she was going to “wear” that day. Lana not only had a nice racing career despite her tiny size (unfortunately giving Dad a taste for victory) but when she retired from the track, she had several lovely foals. After a long, long life, she died peacefully on my Uncle Dan’s farm. While my dad had more than his share of winners (and heaven knows, plenty of losers), he never had a truly Great Horse. People bandy the phrase Great Horse around, applying it to (in my humble opinion) way too many animals—and people. Once you’ve seen a great one, you are less likely to use the phrase casually. Walter Farley, author of The Black Stallion, wrote a fictionalized biography of Man ‘O War, where he described how awestruck he was when he first saw the horse. I know what he meant. Once Dad took us to Hanover Shoe Farms, the biggest Standardbred horse farm in the world, and one of their standing stallions, Bullet Hanover, was in the field, exercising. I had no idea what horse it was or what his record was, but he stunned me with his aura. He was beyond majestic, showing no interest in the people looking at him, just moved back and forth across his field (and he made the earth his!) shaking the ground with his power. I would not have been surprised to hear that he was the king of an alien species, come to conquer a forcing bid at the one level with the intention of bidding your other suit next. You want to get both suits in before competition starts and this is the best way. A one-level response after a takeout double is unlimited and should be treated as if second hand has passed. As North, once West bids, you are off the hook and should be happy to pass. East’s 2♣ bid is natural and not forcing. As West, your jump raise to 4♣, bypassing 3NT, is both forcing and slam invitational. East, with a minimum, signs off in 5♣. Defensive commentary: As South, shift to a trump at trick two rather than set up declarer’s ♠Q, a card partner doesn’t have given the negative signal at trick one. Play commentary: As East, with high trumps and short suits on both sides, think “crossruff.” Start by counting your top tricks. You have the club trick that you have just taken plus both red aces for three. Next, count the trump tricks available. You remain with four trumps in dummy facing three in your hand all of which can Earth. This horse was far, far above any I had ever been exposed to, and I have never forgotten the impact he had, even though it was 38 years ago. And now for our bridge tie-in. I’ll bet you can find an equivalent among your bridge acquaintances for every one of these horses. You certainly know Sandy, and no doubt have had to deal with your share of Jaws-like players! And then there are the great bridge players. There’s a lot more to the greats than just the ability to win. They have “heart.” Unlike the magnificent Bullet Hanover, you might not be able to spot them from their physical presence, but when you sit down with them, and they graciously set about stomping you with class and kindness, you’ll recognize them for sure. Despite his strong hand, Stiefel had passed smoothly over 1NT, so declarer played DeMartino for the ♦A. Declarer had discarded diamonds from his hand on the third and fourth round of hearts, so he was down to a doubleton king when he led the ♦J from dummy. It’s a two-parter: consider it first in 6♣ by North and then the actual problem of 6♣ by South. ♠AQ3 ♥KQ85 ♦A985 ♣43 ♠74 ♥ A 10 ♦ J 10 7 ♣ A K Q 10 7 6 In 6♣ by North on a trump lead, you draw trumps, pitching a spade from hand. Now perhaps the best thing to do is strip off four rounds of hearts, then run the ♦J to endplay East unless he began with five hearts. Almost as good at trick four is to run the ♦J, won by East with the queen. He must return a low heart, and you put in the 10. To give you any problem, West must be able to cover with the ♥J. You win the ♥Q, unblock the ♥A, then cross to the ♦A, cash the ♥K (hoping for the 9 to drop), pitching a diamond from dummy. If the ♥9 does not appear, you ruff a diamond in dummy, and if the remaining high diamond does not appear, you fall back on the spade finesse. That’s about a 90% shot, I think. At the table in 6♣ by South, on the lead of the ♦4 you duck and East wins the king. Back comes a trump, and you draw three rounds, then cash the three top hearts. If the ♥J 9 fall, it’s all over. At the table, East shows out on the third heart. You now pitch the ♦10 on the third heart and play the ♦A, West following with the 2, East with the 8. When you lead the ♦9 from dummy, East follows with the 6. Who has the queen? Surely East. If West has led the ♦4 from Q-4-2, he deserves to beat you! At the other, Icelanders Thorlakur Jonsson and Jon Baldursson used a strong club opening and a nineround auction in which East showed 1-5-3-4 with the ♦A Q and the ♣Q. This seemed like enough to provide two chances for the grand – or did it? The auction had made West declarer and North, Ron Smith of San Francisco led a diamond away from the king. One potential problem of pinpointing dummy’s assets is that the defenders will know what to lead at trick one. Baldursson could not afford to take the diamond finesse at trick one because he had plenty of other chances to make his contract (doubleton ♣J, 3-3 clubs or four clubs to the jack with the ♦K). However, it’s likely that West would have bid the grand anyway without the ♦J, and there was no guarantee that East held the ♣10. If that was the case, the diamond lead would force declarer’s hand at trick one. On the actual hand, Smith held the ♦K but clubs were 3-3 and declarer guessed the end position correctly. This deal came up in the second half: ♠ Q 10 9 6 ♥Q3 ♦ A K 10 9 3 2 ♣K ♠AJ2 ♥AK6542 ♦6 ♣AJ3 Having reached a mediocre 7♥ contract, how would you play on the lead of the ♥10? Obviously, you need 3-2 trumps and to either pick up the diamonds for at least four tricks or take a spade finesse. How should you play to best combine your chances while avoiding a dangerous overruff? There are two rather straightforward lines. One is to draw trumps in three rounds, and play for diamonds 3-3 or the ♠K onside. Another line is for declarer to win in hand, play the ♦A and ruff a diamond, return to the ♥Q and ruff a diamond. This often beats the first line when the diamonds are 4-2 with the ♠K offside but loses when LHO is 3-2 in hearts and diamonds. It also loses when the ♠K is onside and diamonds are 6-0 or 5-1 with the defense able to ruff or score an extra trump trick via an uppercut when RHO is 2-1 in the reds. As for the actual percentages, I’ll leave that to the real math experts out there. My inclination is that the second line is a few percentage points better, but not much more than that. At the table, this line was the winner, with LHO holding ♠K 5 3 ♥J 10 7 ♦Q 8 5 4 ♣9 5 2 Both tables were in the grand with one declarer trying each line, so this was a 20-IMP pickup for Onstott. ♠♥♦♣ Bridge big continued from page 1 but the Bridge Big creators and Zia are hoping that competition for cash prizes will attract more interest from the public and the news media, giving bridge a shot in the arm. The company will begin a testing phase next month and plan to roll out the finished product during the summer, possibly in July. There will be a demo match on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Breathitt Room in the Suite Tower, second floor. Bridge Big will award three $100 cash prizes to spectators in a drawing. Players are also invited to become beta testers for Bridge Big. Information is available on the home page: bridgebig.com. An obvious concern, acknowledged by the Bridge Big creators and Zia, is security (translation: cheating). They have already thought of that. To assure that no player gains an unfair advantage, all competitions will be individuals, one board per round with an unknown partner against unknown opponents (all such information will be revealed when the contest is over). No kibitzers are allowed, and the scoring will be duplicate but not against the field. The comparisons will be against the “history” of a deal that may have been played hundreds of times previously. This is what the Bridge Big creators have written about security on the company web site: Security Anywhere there’s real money at stake, people will look for ways to cheat. On Bridge Big, this will be no different. Bridge Big is committed to prevent any kind of cheating on its site. On bridge sites today it is very easy to cheat because players are allowed to see who their partners are. The only way to deal with this security issue is by playing individually and anonymously. As an extra measure, players will not be allowed to chat with their partners during a game, although they may still talk to their opponents. Even if players somehow find out who they’re partnering with, they can only benefit from this for one board, after which they’re split up again. However, even when players are not each other’s partners they may still try to exchange information about their hand to other players in the tournament. To prevent this type of collusion, players cannot see what direction they sit at the table and what board they’re playing. The vulnerability at the table will also give no clue as all simultaneously played games in a tournament share the same vulnerability and dealer combination. The limited time players have for one board also limits the feasibility for players to exchange useful information. Only after a board has been played by everyone in the field will a user be able to see all four complete hands. In smaller tournament settings, these measures might still not prove sufficient. Although seating schedules on Bridge Big will never allow two or more tables to be playing the same board simultaneously, players could still leak information about previously played boards to each other. In larger tournaments this is less of a threat as players will be divided over multiple sections, each with a unique set of boards, hindering player collusion significantly as collaborating players will be seated in different sections for most of the tournament. In smaller tournaments or in the final rounds of a large knockout tournament it would be preferable if boards are only played exactly once. Scores would be compared not to other players in the tournament, but to all players that ever played the board before in previous tournaments. At stake is the Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York, a great bridge authority and a member of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928, the first year it was in play. Whitehead (1866-1931) was president of the Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held such a fascination for him that he retired from business in 1910 to devote his life to bridge. Red Ribbon Pairs begins today The Red Ribbon Pairs, an ACBL event with national rating open to players with fewer than 2000 masterpoints, gets underway today. Players earn qualification by placing first or second overall in regionally rated events of at least Flight B status. Neither member of a qualifying pair may hold more than 2000 masterpoints at the time of qualification. The four-session event began in 1986 and winners have their names inscribed on the Percy X. Bean Trophy. Bean Trophy The trophy was designated by the ACBL Board of Directors in 1996 to honor Bean, ACBL president in 1972 and chairman of the Board in 1973. Bean (1916-1992) represented District 19 on the Board from 1964 until 1988 and served as president of the ACBL Charity Foundation from 1974 until 1981. He was a member of the National Goodwill Committee and the National Board of Governors and general chairman of arrangements for the World Team Olympiad in Seattle in 1984. Bean and his wife, Anne, were named ACBL Honorary Members for 1992, the first time that honor was bestowed on a husband-wife combination. Bonnie and Lynda Lawson Memorial Side Game Bonnie Lawson died in 2009 after a multi-year battle with cancer, followed soon afterwards by the unexpected death of her daughter, Lynda. Bonnie and her husband, Marvin, ran the Henderson KY game for years and were well known as bridge promoters throughout western Kentucky and southern Indiana. Bonnie won numerous regional and sectional championships; always at tournaments close to Henderson as she rarely traveled away from home. At the table she was famous for her fierce competitive spirit, the quality of her play, and for her calm and friendly demeanor. Indeed, Bonnie will always be remembered for her kindness and grace. We name this event in her and her daughter’s honor and as a tribute to her, her daughter and her husband Marvin, who continues to run the Henderson game and promote bridge in western Kentucky. Eleanor Orr Memorial 299er Pairs Eleanor Orr was primarily a rubber bridge player, but she was devoted to the game and played several times each week. She particularly enjoyed her Thursday afternoon game with Florence “Teach” Tyler. Florence Tyler wrote the daily bridge column for the Cincinnati Inquirer for many years and doubtless acquired some of her example hands from the Thursday afternoon games. Linda Blum Memorial Stratified 299er Swiss Team Linda A. Blum (1944 - 2009) was born in Iowa, married Sam Blum and moved to Louisville, and finally settled in Tampa FL. She became an active and participating member of her Synagogue and local community. While raising a family of four, she never lost sight of her responsibilities to all of the organizations she loved. Ultimately, she became the leader and spokesperson of these groups. Her influence covered the entire southeastern region of the U. S. In her spare time (!) she loved to play bridge. Although her schedule did not permit steady participation, she played as often as she could. We all loved her and miss her! Jim Washer Memorial Stratified Open Pairs By Ralph Letizia Jim Washer and I ran into each other in the early Eighties at a local sectional. I had been playing for some time and he just decided to show up and see what the game was all about. We found we had a myriad of things in common, and soon became good friends. Naturally, the conversation drifted toward bridge and we discussed playing together. After a few games, it was clear that while he was quite the novice, he also was very intelligent and had a real knack for the game. Because I already had several regular partners, I suggested that he ask other good players for games and see where it took him. After about a year or so, we decided to form a team of local players and see what we could do. Amazingly enough, out of five regional knockout events, that we played in we won three and finished second in another! Jim played at least half and usually three-fourths of the boards in every match, and we were never behind when he came out. In the early part of this century, he and I decided to form a partnership so we could play the Precision Club system. Due to totally different styles, we struggled for the first year, and even contemplated shelving the partnership and just playing on teams with different people. We persisted, however, and eventually developed a rock-solid partnership winning many sectional and regional events. Jim liked to play as much bridge as possible during our local regional tournaments and was the leading masterpoint winner at least three times. His sudden passing in 2009 was a harsh blow to all who knew him. His genial smile and warped humor will always be missed. Friday is Verna’s Fun-filled Friday Game Day Averaging 16 to 18 tables, Verna’s Friday game is always lively. Director Verna Goldberg helps make it a fun-filled day. The clever cooks earned money from the Friday players to dedicate this day to Verna, a special director, mentor, teacher and friend. Monitoring At this and future North American Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review. By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated. Bid Box Alerts and Announcements When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. Mary Eversman Memorial Intermediate-Newcomer Pairs The Intermediate-Newcomer Pairs on Thursday is named in memory of Mary Eversman, 76, of Jasper IN. She died as the result of an auto accident near Owensboro on July 27, 2010. Mary was born in Carmi IL, to Clement and Lillian Rebstock on February 18, 1934. She was married to Thomas Eversman. They had four children, one deceased, and 13 grandchildren. Mary was a graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame in Belleville IL and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Evansville IN. Mary was active in St. Joseph Church, Jasper, and Epiphany Cathedral in Venice FL. She was an artist and musician and enjoyed playing bridge and tennis. She was an active member of the ACBL. John Hinton and Cyndy Cradick Day Cyndy Cradick is one of the most-beloved bridge teachers, directors and managers in the Central Indiana Bridge Association (CIBA). This Silver Life Master has devoted her life to bridge over several decades and is the reason many new players enter the bridge world and go on to become avid bridge contenders. Cyndy has worked very hard to create a partnership with members of the local ABA, and through her efforts, many of our ABA friends are frequent players at ACBL games. For nearly two decades, Cyndy served as secretary for Unit 130, retiring in 2010. As caddy master, she has recruited and trained many local youngsters to caddy CIBA events. In her spare time, along with husband ,John, Cyndy spends many hours with her kids and grandkids. An avid reader, she can also now be frequently found with her new Kindle. She never fails to end a game without saying, “Thanks for coming.” We say to her, “Thanks for being there when we came.” John Hinton served the Central Indiana Bridge Association as Unit Treasurer for nearly two decades. His hard work brought many organizational improvements to the Unit’s business and bookkeeping efforts. While tackling these duties for CIBA, John found time to hold the same job for District 11. John is a fierce competitor and has attained Gold Life Master status. He recently decided to retire from his duties as treasurer of CIBA and District 11 so that he could concentrate on spending more time with Brenda and their children, some of whom are already serving as caddies for area tournaments. The members of CIBA appreciate John’s kindness and patience, and hope with some of his volunteer work behind him, we now will have more opportunity to see him at the bridge table.
