“
“Solid Music, Haunting Vocals”- John Ruszin” ,
Carfax Abbey/Collinwood 1 3
“Oh my Goth!”- Morbid Outlook
After studying music for many
years and playing guitar
primarily, founding member
Nate Dal Cais soon realized
that this wasn’t enough to
compose songs, so he took up
piano, theory and voice. Coming
from a working class IrishAmerican family, Dal Cais felt a
sense of pride in his ancestry.
Later, finding out that his
family are the decedents of a warrior high King (Ard-Ri) of Ireland Brian
Boru who at age 70 helped rid the Emerald Isle of the Vikings forever, Dal Cais
began studying their culture and language; Gaelic. Eventually Dal Cais found
the old religion of Ireland, Paganism to be intriguing and noted the similarities
to Catholicism and the ways of the Native Americans, who Dal Cais also
identified with from an early age. “ I always could sense someone looking after
me, even when I was very little, trying to show me that there is a world
which we cannot see, someone trying to help me look past the ordinary world,
and if you believe then you are truly never alone”. Dal Cais felt his faith could
drive him to heights unimaginable. After trying to come up with a perfect
name for his group, in 1999 Nate Dal Cais decided to
formally call his creation Imbolg, after the pagan winter
holiday of rebirth. “I wanted to pick something that
represented both struggle and the ability to have enough
faith to overcome that struggle”.
Black Sabbath had been a major part of his
musical growth. Being exposed to their music very early
on by his Uncle, later buying recordings of theirs, he
realized that he was quite familiar with what he
thought was a new find. Eventually Dal Cais became
familiar with some of the new artists of the time as well
and became influenced by: Sisters of Mercy, Type O
Negative, Rush, The Doors, The Misfits, Jethro Tull,
Return to Khafji, The Cure, Cruxshadows, My dying
Bride, Kiss, CCR, Switchblade Symphony, and Theatre of Tragedy.
Dal Cais eventually moved to New York City, following his heart. He
continued to work with various musicians for years until something jelled, and
it did. He met up with a great well rounded
musician that they named Malacoda, a
Pennsylvania native who started studying
classical piano at age 9. He later went on to
study guitar with a graduate of the Julliard
School. Malacoda mainly plays bass guitar in
Imbolg, but lends his talents on keyboards and
engineering as well. His experience in the
industry ranges from performances on live
tours to teching and studio work . It only took
Malacoda a matter of days to learn the parts
before stepping up on stage with Imbolg. His
main influences includeTool, Miles Davis,
Pantera and Rush.
Julien Laniado, a native New Yorker who has been playing the drums for
over 10 years.Julien has an ear for more progress and
melodic styles of metal ,which ring out in his
influences that include: Metallica, Dreamtheater,
Symphony X, Kamelot, Firewind, and Sonata
Arctica. As the youngest member of the band,
Julien adds both youth and a different stylistic
approach to the Imbolg sound having joined Imbolg
on stage for most of their recent Northeast
appearances. Only the future will tell what else he can bring to fruition.
