Christmas spirit is everywhere since the “Ber” months started. What does Christmas mean to you? Is one of the most popular questions in the Q & A portion of any Search for Christmas Queen of the Phil. Alliance Party which I hosted last Sunday. Some of the contestants say it’s a day of love and forgiveness, a day for kids and some say it is a day to commemorate the day that the child Jesus our savior is born. All of them answered well but of course each one of us has a different way of expressing the meaning of Christmas. Christmas to me, means spending time with those you love and who love you. It’s not about presents as a lot of kids think. It’s about enjoying the time you have on this Earth. But most importantly it’s about forgetting those bad feelings you might have for someone and celebrating the birth of Christ, Jesus, with the world no matter who you are. Christmas is my favorite season not only because of the presents I receive but the presents that I give. It is a lot of fun shopping for gifts and even making them. It is also a time to stop our crazy lives and focus on prayer and love. Christmas means spending time with family that you haven’t seen in a long time and holidays. It is the most special time of the year as this is the day we reflect on who and what is important. The season always brings hope to mankind. We are thankful to God for His divine love and protection. Each Christmas is indeed a time of reflection and renewal. We are now living in time replete with challenges, hence we should all join our hands to help one another especially the needy in our midst. Now is the appropriate moment for us to reach out to others in a spirit of togetherness so that unity will always prevail. May the true spirit of the Christmas Season fill our hearts with genuine LOVE, PEACE and JOY and may CHARITY remain the essence of the celebrations. In celebrating the birth of our Lord, let us anchor our jubilations not on grandeur but on sincere LOVE and gift-giving that will soothe the spirit and offer hope to our loved ones, relatives and friends. May the miracle of Christmas fill your heart with warmth and love. Christmas is the time of giving and sharing. It is the time of loving and forgiving. Together with my family and staff, we wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. Happy reading !!! A Letter from Jesus by Bernadeth Benitez As you well know, we are getting closer to my birthday. Every year there’s a celebration in my honor and I think that this prayer celebration will be repeated. During this day time there are many people preparing, shopping for presents and gifts for their friends, godchildren. There are lots of radio, television announcements, commercials and in every part of the world everyone is talking about my birthday is getting closer. It is really very nice to know that at least once a year, some people think of me. Family and friends get together and have lots of fun but they don’t know the meaning of the celebration. I remember the last years there was a great feast in my honor. The dinner table was full of delicious foods, pastries, fruits and assorted nuts and chocolates. The decorations were exquisite and there were many, many wrapped gifts. But do you want to know something? I wasn’t invited. I was the guest of honor, the celebrant, but they didn’t send me an invitation. The party was for me, but when that great day came, I was left outside they closed the door in my face and I waited to be with them and share their table. I would like this Christmas that you will allow me to enter into your life. I would like that you recognize the fact that almost two thousand years ago I came to this world to give my life for you on this earth to save you. In truth that didn’t surprise me because in the last few years all closed their doors to me. Since I wasn’t invited I decided to enter the party without making any noise and sit in a corner. They were all drinking, there were some drunk and telling jokes and laughing at everything. They were having a good time. Today, I only want you to believe this with your heart. I wanted to have something with you. As many didn’t invite me into their party, I will have my own celebration, a grandious party that no one could have imagined, a spectacular party. I am still making the final arrangements. At midnight all the people begun to hug each other, I extend my arms waiting for someone to hug me and do you know no one hugged me. Suddenly, they all began to share gifs. They unwrapped them one by one with great expectation. When all had been opened, I looked to see if, maybe, there was one for me. What would you feel if on your birthday everybody shared gifts and you did not get one? Today, I am sending you my many invitations and I wanted you to know and wish that you can attend and I will make a reservation for you and write your name with Golden letters in my grand guest book. Only those on the guest list will be invited to the party. Those who don’t answer the invitation will be left outside. Be prepared because when ready, you will be a part of my great party. I then understood that I was unwanted at that party and quietly I left. Every year, people just only remember the gifts, the parties, have fun and drink and eat and nobody remembers me. See you soon. I love you. Jesus PNB IS NOW IN TAIPO PNB Hong Kong management led by its new Country Head Mr. Rodel C. Rolly) A CASE OF ENVY Will you still complain? Dear Bro. Rolly, Bro. Rolly A Chinese couple hired me four years ago and my contract with them was renewed for another two years which started 1st of March this year. My relationship with them has always been smooth and almost perfect until my lady employer gave birth to their first child, a baby boy, last April 11, 2010. VISUALLY MOLESTED On May 2, 2010 they hired Linda, an ex-nurse from the Philippines, specifically to look after the baby as nanny. They feel that I will not be able to do household chores as efficiently as I could if I were also to take care of the baby. What I am angry about is that Linda does not help me at all in doing household chores. All she does is just to feed the baby and take care of his needs while our lady employer is not at home. This is totally unfair because my domestic job of cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing and other chores are more difficult than babysitting and yet we receive the same amount of salary. I want to impress upon my employer that without me, they will not be able to eat anything, they will have nothing to wear and their flat will be dirty. I honestly feel that I should be paid more. Please advise me as to what I should do to get what I want. Api, Apleichau Dear Ms. Api, In the first place you should not compare yourself with another person because you become judgmental and then feel either superior or inferior and on this particular case, you feel you have been treated unfairly. Every one has his own strength and weakness. Consider this – while Linda the nanny is expert in child-care as she is a nurse, she is not expert in cooking like you are. And while you may be good in cooking and other chores, you are not an expert in baby sitting and nursing. That makes it even. What happens is that each one of you is complimentary to one another. In other words what you cannot do well, she does well; and what she cannot do well, you do well. In fact you should count your blessing, my friend. In these hard times of economic turmoil you are lucky that your employer is able to hire another worker to look after her baby – or else you could be doing both babysitting and household chores all together at the same time for the same amount of salary, and I am pretty sure you will not like that. 10 Dear Bro. Rolly, About four months ago, I finished my two year contract with a European family and while I would have preferred to renew my contract as they are an excellent employer, they decided to return to Europe at the end of my contract. While I was with them, I have been accustomed to their habits at home including eating only bread, salad and oven-cooked meals. Everyone in their flat wore shorts without inhibition and so did I. My problem started when I transferred to a new employer, a childless Chinese couple. Both of them are working but most of the time my lady employer spends more time outside as she works as a flight attendant. As a result I spend most evenings in the flat with my male employer. He would return to the flat from work at around seven in the evening and would go to bed before midnight and so I am exposed to his teasing and bad jokes for that long period of time almost every night. While I can tolerate his bad jokes and ridicules, I just cannot stand his staring at my chest as if he has x-ray eyes that he could see my breasts. There was even a time when he touched my behind but told me it was just an accident. He frequently jokes and tells me that he finds me seductive especially with my shorts and sleeveless shirt and that if his wife dies in an airplane crash, he would marry me. One time he told me that he wants to have sex with me only if I consented because he said once I tasted his love, I will be craving for it for the rest of my life. This is really an insult especially I love my husband and my family. who wears shorts and seductive t-shirts without wearing a bra. Your employer teasing you is just the start of more insinuations that he wants to have sex with you. The next time, he will offer you money and promises of a better life if you consented to his desire. And while you continue to practice your habit of wearing shorts and sporting light shirt without bra where the outline of your breasts is clear to his naked eyes, you will continue to arouse his lust and sexual desire and your problem will continue to persist. The solution is clear – decency is required even at home. Wear simple but decent skirt and blouse or shirt and put on your bra as well and see his desire for you naturally dies. Bro. Rolly TO ALL OUR READERS & FRIENDS, A BLESSED CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Researchers believe that laughing causes the body to release beneficial chemicals called Endorphins which may counteract the effect of stress hormones and cause blood vessel to dilate. In similar manner, laughing may also boost the immune system and reduce inflammation, which is thought to increase the risk of various health problems. Karaoke Singing Ended in Assault - - Part 1 Pinky (not real name) was charged with solo offence of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm at Tuen Mun Magistracy in October 2010 where she pleaded not guilty. Prosecution had 7 witnesses, 3 of which gave evidence and 4 of which evidence was admitted either under S65C and S 65B. Mryna H (not her real name), the victim of the assault, gave evidence in chief that when she arrived at the Barkads Cybershop and Karaoke at around 8pm, she went straight to the inner room of the shop where she sat with 4 other friends, 2 males and 2 females, on the first table out of three. The 2nd table was seated by some unknown customers and 3rd table where Pinky was seated with two other ladies. Myrna started drinking with her friends and after 1 hour, Pinky without any basis started to give her strange angry looks. Myrna ignored Pinky thinking she is drunk. At about 10pm, Pinky approached Myrna and with no explanation started swearing at her with foul language. Myrna stood up and confronted Pinky asking her, what’s your problem? Without any warning, Pinky attempted to slap Myrna’s face but Rico (not his real name) quickly averted the attack. Myrna tried to hit back at Pinky but was stopped by Sonny (not his real name). Rico and Sonny tried to stop the fighting from escalating. Rico pushed Myrna back to their table. Sonny pushed Pinky towards the karaoke door. Pinky struggles with Sonny as Pinky wants to get her hands on Myrna. Sonny carries Pinky towards the main store area where sari-sari goods were sold. Myrna follows and Pinky while still being carried by Sonny grabs Myrna’s hair and pulls it. Rico takes the hands of Pinky off Myrna’s hair. Pinky let go but with her 2 hands waving like helicopters hit the left cheek of Myrna twice. Sonny let Pinky off by the cashier counter where can be found a chair and a small table. Myrna followed but 2 of her female friends held her left and right hands pass by Pinky and steers Myrna to the main door to depart from the shop. On cross examination of Myrna, this counsel asked what hand did Pinky used to slap Myrna’s face to which she answered Pinky’s right hand was used to slap Myrna’s left cheek twice. Asked how Pinky effected the 2 slapping movements, Myrna demonstrated 14 that Sonny was carrying Pinky with his hands braced around the hips of Pinky. Pinky facing Sonny with her 2 hands above Sonny’s head, grabbed Myrna’s hair using her 2 hands. Rico took Pinky’s hands off Myrna’s hair. Then Pinky started waiving her 2 hands left right then right to left and with her right hit Myrna’s left cheek. It was put to Myrna that Pinky would not be able to grab Myrna’s very short hair at a height over Sonny’s head to which Myrna disagreed. It was put to Myrna that it would be impossible even by her demonstrations that Pinky be able to hit Myrna on her left cheek twice using Pinky’s right hand if both are facing each other. Right hand of Pinky would consequently hit the right cheek of Myrna but not right hand hitting the left cheek. Her demonstrations of hitting are doubtful because at that height, Pinky would not be able to hit Myrna’s left checks. Pinky would have to be bent down on either shoulders of Sonny to effect the hitting. Myrna disagreed. This counsel asked whether Myrna’s statement to the police statement is complete and accurate to which she agreed. It was pointed out that in her statement Pinky slaps Myrna not hit her. In the statement, Pinky uses her right hand to slap Myrna’s right cheek and not left cheek. There is no mention that Myrna was slapped or hit twice. There is no mention that Pinky was carried by Sonny out of the karaoke room. In the statement, Pinky left the karaoke room by herself. There iss no mention of waving two hands like a helicopter. There is no mention of pulling hair. Myrna answered that she told everything to the police but it was not put down into writing. There is much discrepancy between Myrna’s court evidence and her statement to the police after the event. Which version is the correct one? Myrna insisted that her court evidence is the correct and accurate version. Photos taken by police officers were shown to Myrna, and this counsel pointed out that the sari-sari portion of the shop was in chaos, with goods scattered all over the floor, most items near the cashier counter where there is a chair and a small table. Myrna was asked to explain what caused the clutter. Myrna answers that Pinky grabbed the goods on the shelf and throws them when Myrna walked pass Pinky with Myrna’s 2 female friends. This counsel then showed another photo to Myrna and it was put to her that the goods in fact came from the empty shelf near the main door where goods were missing. It was put to her that it was Myrna who grabs those items off the shelf and throws them towards the direction of Pinky seating by the chair near the cashier counter with a small table, explaining the scattered items around that area and explaining the empty shelf near the main door. Myrna disagreed. This counsel showed yet another photo to Myrna that at the main door are 3 steps before landing on the main floor of the building, to which she agreed. It was put to her that after Myrna throws goods at Pinky, Myrna’s 2 female friends restrained her by holding both of Myrna’s hands and pushing pulling Myrna towards the main door. Myrna puts a struggle with her 2 female friends and in the process, three of them fail to anticipate the 3 steps leading to the main floor of the building. All three of them fell down the stairs, thus explaining the bruises on Myrna’s 2 hands, either from the pulling pushing struggle among them and or the falling on the stairs. Myrna disagreed. This counsel showed the medical report of Myrna stating that she had bruising on her left and right hands but no injury on either sides of neither her cheeks from the helicopter like hitting nor her head or scalp from the pulling of her hair. There is inherent discrepancy in Myrna’s evidence and it was put to her that she was lying in court and she lied at the police station. Myrna disagreed. This counsel also put to Myrna that Pinky sang many songs at the karaoke room to the annoyance of Myrna. On the 7th song of Pinky, Myrna approached Pinky and told her to stop singing as Pinky’s voice is not good and off key. Pinky continued singing her songs anyway to the annoyance of Myrna. It was put to Myrna that it was she who started the commotion and the strange and angry stares of Pinky to Myrna for no apparent reason as Myrna alleges are all lies. Myrna disagreed. Carillo / ORAS NG HIMALA staff It was the Holy Father who gave us the greatest gift. Because of His immeasurable love, so He gave His only begotten Son. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3: 16 Though the Father had already given us the greatest gift yet He gives us more. Look what He has been given unto us; • He gives us eternal life and an abundant life. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they mayhave life, and have it to the full. John 10:10 • He gives us the right to become His child. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13 • He gives us perfect health as He took away our sicknesses and diseases. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5 • He gives us peace. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 • He gives us joy. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 2 Timothy 1:4 • He gives us strength and protection. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 • He gives us success and a victorious life. 16 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphant procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 2 Corinthians 2:14 • He gives us freedom as He redeemed us from the curse of the law. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. Galatians 3:13 What can we give to Him in return? ANSWER: 1. GIVE YOUR LIFE TO JESUS. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:4 2. REPENT FROM ALL YOURS SINS. Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Acts 3:19 3. Eddie Villanueva Guiding Light How to Connect Ourself to God? The Attitude of Faith by Bernadeth M. Benitez It’s Christmas time again and the search is on. By this, I mean the annual search for the customary best and finest gifts we may give to our families and friends. By this, I also mean the annual search of godchildren for their godparents for their much anticipated aguinaldo. By this, I further mean Filipino overseas’ balikbayan boxes getting filled up with the choicest padala and pasalubong for their loved ones back home in the Philippines. boys aged two years and below to be killed. But by then, the Child was already out of harm’s way. And Herod died without seeing the Savior. The concept of searching for the finest gifts during Christmas season is not original to us. In fact, the act of seeking is the very heart of Christmas. These are the three lessons on searching and finding the best Christmas Gift who is the Savior Child born to become our Messiah and Master: first, simple faith can make us see the Savior; second, he who intentionally seeks the Savior is wise; and third, the search for the Savior must be sincere and personal. When the angel of the Lord appeared before the sleepy shepherds who were out in the field that night, watching over their sheep, he bid them tidings of great joy. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10, Msg). At once, the shepherds took off, went to Bethlehem, sought and found the newborn Child. Then they told everyone about the angel’s appearance and his message about the Child. These simple shepherds were the first people to be told about the birth of the Savior, and they believed what they heard. They were the first to be told to seek Him, and they sought and found Him – and everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said (Luke 2:20)! Their inspiring story tells us how our simple faith can make us see the Savior. If we listen to the Word and obey, there are no pre-qualifications asked of us. We can come to Him as we are, regardless of our position and condition in life, and we will still find Him as He is. The sorry story of King Herod proves to us that there are those who will seek the Savior and find Him not because they seek Him not with a pure heart. Herod also typifies how man’s power, wealth, and fame do not guarantee him automatic access to the Savior. And most importantly, seeking and finding the Savior is a personal act; we cannot order, pay, or threat others to search God for us. This Christmas, amidst the frenzied busyness of the holidays, may we find ourselves seeking the Savior with all of our heart and finding His great love for all of us! Only those who have found the Savior and accepted His saving grace have the reason to celebrate the season. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12). “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Man should realize that these wise men’s message rings true to this day, and anyone who thinks that God is already irrelevant in our time of sophisticated technology and advance intelligence is utterly foolish. “Only a fool would say, “There is no God!” People like that are worthless! They are heartless and cruel and never do right” (Psalm 53:1). Christmas or not, wise people still seek, and find, God. Then there was King Herod who also sought the Child, albeit his intention was evil. Afraid that the newborn King whom the wise men were looking for might take the kingdom from him, Herod set to seek the Child himself that he might kill Him. So he asked the magis to report to him where he could find the Child, in the guise that that he too wanted to worship Him. But God cannot be mocked nor cheated. Aware of Herod’s evil plan, He instructed the magis in their dream to never go back to Herod. Realizing eventually that the wise men outwitted him, Herod ordered all 20 convince me to have that attitude of faith. She lamented that we imagine that we are talking to God personally and inject faith so that we feel comfortable coming to God with our needs, our concerns and whatever issues were current in our life. conduct our lives aware of him, relying in him, listening to what he says, then whatever we ask him according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked from him. I heard from the homily of the Priest and Pastors that “If we pray we must begin a relationship with God. We have that foundation, we familiarize ourselves to him, we connect our selves by reading and believing his words. For those who know him and rely on him, Jesus seems to be wildly generous in his offer. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you Jesus said. To remain in Him and have his words remain means we must Like in our group organizations and association, we place our confident in GOD. We say this because, there is nothing in us that allows us to claim that we are capable of doing this work. The capacity we have comes from God, it is he who made us capable in doing those activities we did. Love ane another. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. Consider the feelings of others. By doing this, God answer our prayers according to his will, wisdom, his love for us and his holiness. Those who manifest their faith and have relationship with God based on faith. In my readings, to have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for and to be certain of the things we can not see. Like God, we can’t see him but he could see him through his words in the Bible. It was by faith when we plan for something and believe that it will happen to us and believe that God is powerful though we can not see him.(Mark 11:22-24). The second group of people that sought the Child and found Him were the wise men from the East. They purposefully went on a long journey to seek and worship the newborn King of the Jews. A star guided them to the right place at the right time. “They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). These scholars’ enlightening story teaches us that a truly wise man knows, seeks, and finds the real Object of his search in life – the King and no other! It’s remarkable how their wisdom led them to the Savior and how, in their wisdom, they worshipped Him with their best offering of prophetic gifts that spoke of His deity, humanity, and sovereignty. Many of us believe that GOD is indeed magnificent and great. We believe that he can do extraordinary things. So, how to connect ourself to GOD? Why do these wonders do not happen in our lives. Is the problem in GOD? No,the matter is in us. We lack the attitude of faith that allow/ connect us to GOD’s greatness to manifest in our lies. We have to manifest our faith so that our emotions are overweighed and our dreams can finally come true. (Mark11:14) Those who manifest their faith and hae relationship with GOD based on faith. Is there anything? Sadly, though, many of us have learned that it’s just as easy to fall out of love as it was to fall into it. And while finding love and affection is one of our greatest personal needs, why is it that so few seem to stay in love? Falling in love can be the start of a loving relationship but lasting relationships don’t just happen, they grow. In many ways nurturing a relationship is like tending a garden. Neglect it and it dies. Constant care and cultivation including the following suggestions are needed to keep love alive and growing. Love is being there. One of the chief ingredients of love is to give another person your presence. Without presence love receives an invitation to die. Presence is not only spending physical time with another person but also giving him or her our undivided attention when we are with them. It includes being sensitive to his/her feelings and aware of his/ her needs. It means not only hearing with our ears but, much more so, hearing with our heart. For instance, recently I visited with a friend who spent the entire time talking about his interests and concerns. I tried to share some of my interests, too, but felt as if my words fell on deaf ears. There was no experiencing of mutual presence the basis for all meaningful relationships including friendships. Loving relationships don’t just happen, they grow. Love is understanding. Most behavior is caused or motivated, once we understand this, we can be much more accepting and loving. For example, one father I know was having difficulty with one of his two children. One was the “perfect” child, the other constantly rebelling.” Is one of your children a favorite?” I asked the father. With a tinge of embarrassment he admitted the “good” child was. “Do you think this could be the cause of your difficult son’s negative behavior?” I asked again. The answer was obvious. Much negative behavior in adults as well as children is caused by not feeling adequately loved. This may have its roots in present relationships or from unmet childhood needs. Either way, when people are acting negatively or yelling, they are hurting and, in a way, however clumsily, are yelling for help. If we can see this and take the time to understand the real cause behind their behavior instead of taking it personally and yelling back, we can go a long way in strengthening our love relationships. Love is accepting responsibility. Most of us bring the excess baggage of unresolved issues from the past into our close relationships. For example, the man who didn’t get along with his mother and is still angry at her, will inevitably take out his hostility on his wife and family. Or the woman who felt mistreated by her father or some other significant male and is distrustful of men will take out her hurt and anger on her husband, and so on. If we desire to stay in love, it is imperative that each of us accepts the responsibility for resolving our inner conflicts that cause dissension in our present relationships. We were not responsible for our upbringing but we are now totally responsible for what we do about resolving any negative effects our past had on us. Love is more than sex. Love is much more than a physical relationship. It is also an emotional relationship. The husband who ignores the emotional needs of his wife and expects to receive a warm response in bed is inviting frustration. Women are not machines to be turned on at will. Sex starts in the kitchen at six, not in the bedroom at nine. A long-lasting physical relationship is the result of an ongoing healthy emotional relationship. On the other hand, the wife who no longer shows any interest in her husband’s life outside the home feels totally shocked when she discovers that one of the younger women at the office has. Many men (and women too) who get involved in extra-marital activity, don’t do it so much for sexual reasons but for companionship someone who will listen to them and make them feel important and appreciated. Love is romance. I read about one woman who had been married for 25 years. She was in her front yard when the newlywed man from across the street arrived home from work. His wife rushed out the door to greet him and they stood embracing for a long time. The observer got the message. When her husband came home that evening she did likewise. The rewards of all such romantic gestures are well worth the effort. And men, don’t forget that our ladies love a rose from time to time and other 32 “little things” that make them feel loved and important. A good tip for keeping romance alive, as one person suggested, is to have an affair with your wife? Love is a commitment. Love that lasts is a commitment of one imperfect person to another imperfect person. It means that no matter what, I am committed to you and to your growth. I will be what you need me to be not necessarily what you want me to be. If you need me to be loving and affectionate, I will be loving and affectionate. Or, if for your growth you need me to be tough and firm, I will be tough and firm. Within the bounds of my own imperfections I will always strive to do and be what is best for your growth.True love is a commitment of one imperfect person to another imperfect person. This kind of commitment means that one will not try to manipulate the other person to get his or her own way, but will at all times maintain gut-level, open and honest communication. It isn’t easy, but it is the way of love. Love is spiritual. Love is not only physical and emotional, it is also spiritual. For instance, a sociologist named Steven Nock of the University of Virginia, studied the link between religion (the spiritual) and the family. He concluded that couples who attend church regularly are 42 percent more likely to be still married for the first time than couples who don’t go to church. However, it’s more than just going to church that makes a marriage happy. It’s commitment that make the difference. Those truly committed to their spiritual faith are 23 percent more likely to have a “very happy” marriage than couples who don’t go to church. The point is when we respond to God’s love, he gives us “a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline”1—all essential for cultivating loving relationships. So, if you don’t attend church regularly, why not start this week. Find a church where love, friendship and affection are expressed. This, too, can help to greatly enrich our love life.
