News Spring 2011 Farewell to a founder and friend of Creative Living Richard N. “Max” Maxwell 1942 - 2011 Dick had a determination to finish college at OSU which, We are sad to report that one of at the time, would have been difficult if not impossible Creative Living’s founders passed without the help of his mother and fraternity brothers who away April 28, 2011. He was very effective in directing his care facilities saying, and being in charge of his surroundings - putting those “This is the problem the young quadriplegic around him at ease - he would explain to a class ,where he was a speaker, that the way to ask for help in daily living faces. He pioneered accessibility for on – and it’s very sad to lose the inspiration for the mission/ disabled students through Creative Living and as an founding of CL. administrator in OSU’s Disability Services Office. Dick Maxwell was kind and patient to teach people about what it meant to be a quadriplegic. In 1970 he gave a speech that was published in the Journal of Rehabilitation. An excerpt from “Quadriplegia - What Does it Mean?”: “It means he is entirely dependent on others for the rest of his life, for every physical activity. He is a mentally independent individual who has lost all of his physical independence. It means that for the rest of his life he will see the world from either a sitting or lying position. He cannot dress himself, wash his face, brush his hair or eliminate his body wastes without someone else’s help. It means he cannot hold the hand of someone he loves, because he cannot grasp. And if a loved one holds his hand, he cannot feel her touch. He cannot straighten a magazine if its crooked position on a table bothers him. It means that if he is ill he cannot cough or sneeze because he has no muscular contraction in his chest.” His speech expressed what it meant to be quadriplegic in powerful words. Dick at Creative Living’s 35th anniversary picnic June 27, 2010 Welcome New Resident Chris Bowsman obtained his BA in German, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and his Masters in Intercultural Communication from Edinboro University. He calls himself a “cultural investigator” and has a longing to help people understand each other, as well as himself to be understood. In college a lot of his friends were foreign students and he identified with the feeling of wanting to make a connection with people. He says, “I am who I am in spite of and because of my disability”. After graduation, Chris wanted to live closer to family and googled “independent living” and our website came up - he said originally he thought Creative Living sounded too good to be true. He feels it was a giant stroke of luck that he found us. ------------------------n, -io--at----mm ------ic --un n ------co ma ---ws Bo -------------ris -Ch --by --m -do -ing ee -go Fr y -ibl--------ss-po---y--&----------In --rit --cu --Se ra tu ul terc --l ---------------in ile -A -M -an -ve -a ha -r I -fo ------D--wh ------Ph le -op ---------------n and love help-pe --ing ----io ------------ -at-ic-ttlin un-se---o-----g--int my-------t -pu----n ---mm ca---Co I-re-fo Be r. he ot -ch -lif ea -w nd-----------my--ne ------e---d ---------ta-y--an --rs rit --de cu --un se -ed ne -I -r, ve --we -ho us e, -----------mb lu-Co-in -ee--to --. -gr-----ial --us ec sp ---ve---ha --de -I -on -rs pe --led -ab s-dis-----------ha a -m.--As My dream-do--ee----le---------s an op ce-pe--rvi-lp---fr se-he-e -d ---d-------------th--t--an by t t--ou me ge e ar to --e en -os -be -th s d -ay -an ---s, alw -ed --ne --s. --ide -rib -ov---------nt----ut pr-co -----vin ---------ing be--a-e--Li d -an-eativ r,--Cr he --g-ot nt -me ch on ea -vir -nd -en -ta -e -rs -ibl de --ss -un -ce -d -ide ac -he -ov pr -lis n -mp ca -co g -ac vin ------------- t, right now, I’ Li -an -e m-----------tiv ea Cr y. ---------- -----et -ci -so ---of -pu --er ly --mb -mp -Si -me --e, -------------e I ns-er-, wh me---------------special needs, --------r -d in this se-fo-nt ----me on vir e en tiv----si-th-------------- an----------po wi -t at -en th ud st al -------ic --ys -a -ph-----ck--to -----ba-rry--ab -------------- uldn’t have to me--ge ---wo lp -he---t--my ll ---ou --t-wi g -vin -Li -e -tiv -wo -ea -my -Cr --th --g wi w -----------rin-ne----fe-a -er-d ----------int------s -le,--an ed-ty-ne-es-ial-lif--ec-hy sp alt d he an d y an ilit --nt ab -de --dis -nfi d --ul -ts wo -an I -st e. -si -lif -As ------------ ey offer Resi--al ---co nt ---------so nc de --ci------------ve -nfi th------------ de-co --d-e -s,-us---e,--an es-ca--cc be -, su -pe ho ha es -d -aid -ul ---lar wo I-regu ---us ca -------------ee b--be tw -------------- be free to do ---e-my--jo ---day--be -e ----n--my th---ut -ho ug -ro -th -a ---------d by te-iva-el--of ot-lev -------M----g--a-m.-rin -------------- security and -do-fe ee-fr--, of ed-ed--ne -if , -ht -nig th --bo at -d -be----an ------rk--ha wo------------- ve not had. ---ll -wi---rd--to I -, -ty----------------du --of e -ns -ha se --I -ng y --ro -rit -st -. ---to-----------------my ------------ dom, I can go--ba --cu --se -----als --go -----e-d I --ev an---hi n, -ee------------ --ck --ac ca-fr---ll I -at ---wi st th-be ith e W th -------n an io------at---d-----------r tr fo-n -io---sl-ss---an pa------ng--my --ui --rs --pu Resident News Sunday night dinners have become a tradition at Perry Street. At a dinner in March, Princess James was surprised by the group with an electric wheelchair. Resident Cheri Mikol worked with the Veteran’s organization to get the chair donated. Cheri said, “We’re family here and it’s important to support each other.” Princess was thrilled and definitely surprised! Congratulations to former resident Ethan Schneider who placed 3rd in the 2011 Buckeye Classic Wheelchair National Bodybuilding and Figure Championships. Sam Williams arrived back from visiting his sister in Hawaii. Tamara serves in the Air Force and Sam enjoyed some Hawaiian time before his sister’s reassignment. Brandon and his parents, Robin and Karen Fritts Congratulations to Brandon Fritts who received the William M. and Frances Smith Junk Award at the Office for Disability Services Annual Recognition Reception. Brandon is getting his degree in Economics with a Business minor. While in school, Brandon works part time in a phone room for a marketing research company. In addition, he assists Creative Living by designing their annual fund-raising invitations and other graphic work. The William M. and Frances Smith Junk Endowed Fund was established in 1982 by the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University with a gift to The Ohio State University Development Fund from William M. and Frances Smith Junk. All gifts are invested in the University’s Permanent Endowment Fund; the annual income is to be awarded to a physically handicapped student enrolled at The Ohio State University and residing at Creative Living. Recipients are determined by the University Committee for Student Financial Aid, the University Office for Disability Services and Creative Living. Resident Assistants There was a whole lotta’ of saving going on at Creative Living over two Sundays in February. Twenty-one Resident Assistants took their CPR and AED renewal training. When they are first hired, all of our RA’s go through an intensive 12 hour training to provide the best and most knowledgeable assistance they can to our residents. Our Resident Assistants are truly the heart of Creative Living. We thank our most generous community and donors for their support of this program. OT Students Host a Dinner Written by Audrey Petit, Creative Living Resident Assistant and OT student Student Occupational Therapy Association students of OSU hosted a Valentine Dinner for Creative Living residents. The weather was beautiful for February. We had a good turnout from residents and OT students. Rick King grilled hot dogs and we had chili, corn bread, drinks, and Valentines-themed desserts. The students helped resident Cheri Mikol prepare and take to-go plates with a little valentines message to residents who could not make it to the lobby. Everyone enjoyed mingling and playing a couple rounds of Catchphrase. It was a fun evening! Grill master Rick King “worked” for his dinner by helping the OT students with the preparation Billy George shared some of his drawings, enjoyed dinner and the company of OT students Board of Trustees News We welcome new board member Devoney Mills. Devoney has a true passion for Creative Living’s mission and we welcome her to our Board of Trustees. Financial News Devoney Mills and Robert Baxter served on the Host Committee of Bouquet of Flavours - We received a Volunteer Leadership Grant from Cardinal Health Foundation for Jason Blumenauer’s service on Creative Living’s Board of Trustees. -We received a grant from Safelite AutoGlass. -We were the recipient of an estate gift from Beverly Bemes. A Minute with Marilyn As the Executive Director of Creative Living, I am proud. I felt proud after reading about the exciting news of the $100 million gift given by the Wexner family and the Limited Brands Foundation to The Ohio State University. I felt proud when I watched the new video on The Columbus Foundation website, Columbus Smart Capital video. I felt proud seeing how Columbus is number one in so many community possibilities and achievements. I am proud of our philanthropic community and I am especially proud of our own donors generosity in supporting the residents of Creative Living. It may not be $100 million or even $1 million, but every dollar is appreciated and used to support our mission. I am reminded daily of the power of philanthropy and how it can change the world. I feel so proud to be involved with Creative Living and assure you that our little nonprofit feels the effects of a philanthropic community every day. I am proud our Creative Living community stretches from coast to coast in philanthropic giving. I am proud that we just had our most successful spring fund raiser ever. I am proud of the achievements of our residents thanks to the philanthropic support of our friends. I invite you to share my pride knowing that your support goes directly to support our residents and their quest for independence. I hope when you read our stories it warms your heart and makes you feel proud as it has mine. - Marilyn Frank, Creative Living Executive Director Event News We are hosting an Open House Wednesday evening, August 10th. If you are interested in touring the Creative Living facility, seeing how the Resident Assistance Program works and meeting some of our residents, let us know so we can include you in our invitation. E-mail [email protected] or call Executive Director Marilyn Frank at 614.421.1226. This past December was my first opportunity to visit one of the two Creative Living facilities, meet residents, and see why my friends have become so passionate about the organization. I never knew that we had such a unique organization located in Columbus, and after meeting residents and seeing the facility, I realized how vital a role such a group plays in the community.
