Primate Dates

“Bachelor number one. Which do you prefer: picking bugs off
your own head, from behind a lady friend’s ears, or out of a
rotten log?” Hmm. Now there’s a question that most dating
show contestants wouldn’t quite know how to answer. But
when it’s Orangutan Internet dating, fewer questions could
be more apropos. Orangutan caregivers in the Netherlands
are providing a dating service of sorts, to set
up long-distance relationships with a bunch of cute
and flirty orangutans in Indonesia. The hope is that the
service will help the orangutans feel more socially
connected with others of their kind. (Hey, it works
for people!) With the touch of a button, these lucky
folks will even have the ability to offer
their overseas sweethearts a tasty treat. No saving up a
month’s salary to cover the restaurant
bill. Just zingo – push a button and your dating obligations
are magically covered.
Super
Sensors!
England: Long the cat’s meow for helping
animals hunt and stay safe, whiskers are
going high-tech. Scientists plan to replicate these super-sensitive hairs for use
with land-based robots. These whiskers,
which arbitrarily “sweep” over objects,
could help robots to navigate obstacles or “see” in low light or fog. “On an
autonomous rover, they could be used
to characterize terrain and ground texture, to verify the speed of the rover and
to determine whether the wheels of the
rover are slipping,” says Mitra Hartmann, a
professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In nature,
whiskers give animals
detailed reports about
the air (and sometimes
water) around them
and anything they
touch. Cats don’t have
the corner on whiskers,
either. Dogs, otters,
walruses, guinea pigs
and seals are just a few
other animals sporting
(and sprouting) better-than-average body
hair.

Bring on the bling! Sebastian
the Persian cat found a way
to cash in on his bulldog-like
underbite. His person, a dentist, capped the two teeth with
gold crowns. Oh yeah, baby.
Now all the ladies swoon as he
struts his stuff. Come on, really,
how many cats get to flash a
glint of gold when they drop
that killer smile? His dentist
dad just wanted to protect the
exposed teeth, though he’s
supportive of Sebastian’s increased popularity. Now all Sebastian has to do is pick out a
matching gold chain and tailring to keep up his street cred.

(DOG LICENSE)
Hi,
My boyfriend and I recently moved to Providence (Nov, 2006), and I have
1 dog (8-year old Chocolate Lab) and 3 cats. I was happy to see your
publication at Bone Appetit in East Greenwich this weekend, and I loved
reading through it and checking out your website. I am putting my check
in the mail today for a subscription, I liked it so much.
I’m hoping you can help me out with information related to getting a
license for my dog. I couldn’t find anything on your web site, and I looked
at many of the links on your web site. I also reviewed the CODE OF ORDINANCES - City of PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (www.municode.com
<http://www.municode.com> ), and although it states that dogs must
have a valid rabies certificate in order to be licensed, it doesn’t mention
how to get your dog licensed.
If you could help me out with this, I’d appreciate it. And you might consider adding this type of “newcomer” information to your magazine or web
site.
Thanks in advance,
Carol Lee
Dear Carol Lee,
This is such a great questions and one we get it quite a bit. The
easiest way to get your pet licensed is to go to Animal Control – you can
also go to city hall but much harder to park. Animal Control's website is:
www.providenceri.com/animal/. It’s just $5 and yes, bring a current rabies
certificate.

Good Luck
The Animal Print
Hi Stephanie,
I hope this email finds you well and having a healthy and safe New Year so
far!
I wanted to send thanks to you once again for continuing our ad for volunteers at the shelter in the Animal Print magazine. We have found 3 compassionate and dedicated volunteers through your add this winter so far!
As you know, it is increasingly difficult to keep volunteers because of life’s
changes such as moving, starting a family, employment changes or just
too busy of a schedule. It is so very important that the animals in the shelter
receive daily exercise and attention to keep them happy and healthy until
we can find a forever home for them and the second chance that they so
deserve. The volunteers bond with them, and it gives the animals the love
they need to sustain them through this difficult period in which they are in
a strange and loud environment. I find this is so very important to all of the
animals in the shelter, no matter how long or short a stay they have with us.
Once again, I thank you so much for giving the people of RI another important tool in which they can use to raise or rescue they’re animals, and to
provide them with many avenues of information and resources! Your magazine is not only extremely informative, but fun to read!
Much appreciation and thanks,

lovers who received the book as
a gift and ended up swearing off
breeders and pet stores in favor of
adoption or decided to dedicate
themselves more actively to making
a difference.
I can not even explain the humble honor I feel in being able to produce photographs which actually
serve to illuminate thought and motivate change. Making this book,
has truly been a privilege. Furthermore, I am thrilled to say that “Shelter Dogs” has already raised over
$20,000 for the ASPCA. Fortunately,
the success
of this
project has also enabled me to do
another photography book promoting animal welfare which I hope will
continue to inspire compassion and
action across borders.
This winter, I will be spending
two months abroad, shooting my
next book, “Street Dogs” (September 2007, Merrell Publishers) which
focuses on the strays of Puerto Rico
and Mexico. Like it’s predecessor,
“Street Dogs” will feature many
close-up portraits of dogs with
absolutely amazing stories of survival, rescue and rehabilitation, but
this book will also branch out visually
to include many more documentary photos as
well as sweeping

It has always been my dream as
a career photographer to produce
important work. I have struggled
for years to find a way of successfully combining my passion for image making with my ethics, hoping
to find a unique way of grabbing
people’s attention and emotions
without shouting. My recent book
“Shelter Dogs” has become more
than I ever hoped for. The project
is a result of a deep lifelong love
of animals, particularly dogs, and
my experiences volunteering in
Providence shelters. In my volunteer work, I was so overwhelmed
by the unnecessary loss of life that
I witnessed and knew others to be
witnessing, every day in every city
all over America, that I had to
find a way to tell people
about it.
My goal was to put
individual faces to
statistics and invite
the reader in for a
closer more personal
view of an epidemic
problem. At first, my
publishers and I were
afraid that no one
would buy the book;
that such an emotional subject would
turn readers away, but
the response has been
overwhelming.
Animal
lovers were clearly ready for
a book like “Shelter Dogs” and
I am thankful to everyone who did
not turn away from this book despite
it’s mix of happy and grim endings.
I have received dozens of
letters from people all over the world
who wanted to share their stories,
experiences and general reactions
to “Shelter Dogs”. Many have been
shelter workers or volunteers them-

“environmental” and landscape
images of dogs and the places
where they live.
About four years ago, an article
in Bark magazine about “Satos”
caught my eye. The word “Sato”
is Puerto Rican slang for “mutt”
although the word has come to be
associated with any stray street dog,
even if it is a purebred. The small
island of Puerto Rico is estimated to
have over 200,000 stray dogs who
roam the streets, beaches, jungles
and dumps, usually in packs looking for food, shelter and fresh water.
On the island, many independent
animal rescue groups such as Save
A Sato and Amigos de los Animales
are trying to make a difference.
Most are united with US groups and
shelters who regularly take in shipments of healthy, rehabilitated Satos to find new homes in the states.
Initially, my reaction to this information was mixed. I was relieved
that so many dogs are being saved
but confused as to why the US was
taking in dogs from other countries
when our own shelters are so overcrowded. The answer is actually
quite logical. As anyone who has
ever worked or volunteered at a
shelter will tell you, there is always
a waiting list for puppies and small
dogs. Most people wanting a small
dog or young puppy do not change
their minds and adopt a 70lb Shepherd or even a 35lb terrier. They
want a small dog because of their
living situation or lifestyle and will
either wait and wait or just go buy
a dog when none are available at
the shelters. Furthermore, there are,
quite happily, a number of private
shelters in New England, upstate NY
and other areas that simply don’t
have many dogs.
Small purebred dogs are very
popular in Puerto Rico. The most
common breeds are Chihuahuas,
Italian Greyhounds and small
Terriers. When these dogs end up on
the street, either lost or abandoned
by their owners, the Satos which are
produced from frequent breeding,
are often small as well. The rescue
groups who send dogs to the US
usually focus on puppies and smaller
breeds because they simply fly out

of the adoption centers. The quicker
they are adopted out, the sooner
more dogs can be rescued.
While in Puerto Rico, I was fortunate to work with some absolutely
amazing rescuers who are singlehandedly, with no government subsidation or endorsements, saving thousands of dogs every year. Elizabeth
Kracht, who volunteered to work as
my guide and assistant in San Juan
is an American who came to the island in 2005 to open a vitamin and
health food store with her boyfriend.
As an animal lover, she was immediately overwhelmed by the number
of strays. She began researching options and networking with organizations because as she put it, “knowing
myself, I knew I needed to prepare...
because it was just going to be a matter of time before I’d be in a position
of not knowing what to do with an
animal.” Two years later, rescue has
taken on a full time role in her life.
In fall of 2006, Liz received a
pleading email about a beach in
Yabucoa at the southeastern corner of the Island, that locals had
nicknamed “Dead Dog Beach”. An
American surfer and sculptor named
Steve McGarva had discovered the
beach near his home and had since
been feeding and trying to care for
the dozens of homeless dogs there.
When Liz first visited the beach, over
100 dogs were occupying the jungles
and abandoned buildings in this 1-2
square mile area. Dead Dog Beach has become a
dumping ground for dogs who are no longer wanted
by their owners.
So far, Liz and other rescuers have taken over 70
dogs off this beach and rehabilitated them. When I
was there, we encountered several packs containing
a total of about 40 dogs.
One of the more frustrating experiences during my
trip was seeing beautiful, friendly or ill dogs that we
were not able to take off the streets because there was
simply no funding for them. Each dog requires vet care
(including spay or neuter) boarding during their recovery and airfare to the states. Some dogs are kept for
only a week or two while others require months of care.
Due to the high rate of abuse and abandonment, most
rescue groups will not adopt dogs out within Puerto
Rico which is why airfare is required. Often, sponsors
are obtained to pay for a dog’s rescue and rehabilitation. Initial sponsorship money needed to get a dog off
the streets ranges from $125-$200.
Occasionally larger dogs are rescued and sent
to breed specific rescues or again, shelters that simply don’t have many dogs, but the US has no general
shortage of medium and large homeless dogs, so it is
harder to find them a willing sponsor.
11
From time to time though, rescuers meet a larger
dog in desperate need of help and simply can’t turn
their backs. I am profiling two such dogs in this piece:
Jess and Buddy.
Jess, a beautiful white shepherd mix, was one of the
Alpha dogs who lead the pack at Dead Dog Beach.
One day, Steve found him severely injured from abuse
he had recently suffered. Someone had poured hot
oil on him, leaving burns so deep that his organs were
protruding. Steve had no choice but to stitch him up
immediately and then try to get him to a vet who could
help him.
Jess has been in vets and kennels for 6 months
and is now in a temporary foster home. His wounds will
continue to heal but he will most likely always have
a disfiguring scar. He is about 2 years old and weighs
approximately 60lbs. He is very energetic and needs
to be in a very active household where he will receive
daily exercise.
His alpha dog personality makes him dominant
to some other male dogs but Jess is a love with all
female dogs and humans. His spirit is unbreakable-he is
very playful and good natured despite all he has been
through. His airfare to America is pre-paid, he is just
waiting to find a loving forever home to go to.

Sometimes the best part of your day
is just a pleasant encounter at a
coffeehouse. That’s where I
join Glenn at his table. “Your
name means, you belong
outdoors,” I say, to show
off that I remember who
he is. He is a local artist
who is forever sketching outdated tools, or,
occasionally, buildings
marked for demolition.
He likes to save things.
On a chilly afternoon
he brought me up to
date on a new tale of a
rescue.
“My brother woke me up
just after I’d fallen asleep
at night. He was in a panic.
He’d caught a mouse on
one of those awful sticky-pad
traps and didn’t what know to
do about it. ‘Come over and do
what you have to do,’ he pleaded.
‘Just knock it out with a rock,’ I told him, but

he couldn’t do it. I had to take it back to my
apartment. Well, I’m good with tools, patient and meticulous. It took me a long
time, a very long time, but I managed
to disengaged the little creature’s
legs and claws with a minimum of
harm, just some minor abrasions.
‘But it’ll die tonight all the same,
from fear,’ I warned my brother.
I put the little ball of anxiety in
a box, carefully, with paper
and some crumbs, sure and
certain it would be ready for
burial by dawn.
But no! In the morning it was
fit and lively and even hungry
and thirsty. It jumped and it
looked perfectly comfortable
in its new home. I touched it:
I always touch the animals I try
to help, I can’t help it, it’s just the
way I am. I was a little afraid it might
scratch or bite me, but it hasn’t done
so. I’m heading for a pet store to buy a
proper terrarium to set up for it. If it can make
it through till spring, I’ll let it go safe and sound.”
This is pretty much precisely what
Glenn told me. I was most impressed.
Most such stories about wild things
that briefly become pets end badly.
A few become legend and popular
books. But Glenn’s saga bodes ill,
or at least ironic. “The problem is, I
looked up what kind of mouse I have,
and, of course, it turns out it’s an
ordinary house-mouse. Which means,
maybe it can only live in a human
habitat, in somebody’s home. So,
what can I do with it?”
Does this anecdote have a point?
I think it’s about the value of the
gesture itself. In a coffeeshop you
can say whatever is on your mind,
grandiose or petty. You can get a
laugh, a smile, a melancholy glance,
whatever. I like to wax philosophical
over my caffeine. “The mouse will tell
God that you are kind to one of his
ancient designs, sent to humanity to
test humanity.” I think that’s more or
less how I put it.
Then we shook hands and went our
separate, thoughtful, ways.

Nadia 25820 is 11 years old. Her former
owner became ill and could no longer
care for her. She is a nice cat that likes
her space. A windowsill would suit her
just fine.
MISHU - ID#A037331 My name is MISHU. I am
a spayed female, calico Domestic Shorthair
mix. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years
and 1 month old
TIP - ID#A037382 My name is TIP. I am a male, tricolor Bluetick Coonhound mix. The shelter thinks I
am about 3 years old.
ISABELLA - ID#A037341 My name is ISABELLA. I am a spayed female, yellow Purebred
Labrador Retriever. The shelter thinks I am
about 8 years old.
SNOWBALL - ID#A037208 I am a spayed
female, white Domestic Shorthair. The
shelter thinks I am about 12 years old.
Princess 25598 is a year old. Someone found her
and her 2 babies Jasmine & Beauty and could
not keep them. The babies were too young to
be placed so they all went into foster care until
they were old enough. She is timid yet loving.
She does not like to be picked up and enjoys a
quieter household.
Taffy 25657 is 5 years old. She was
too much for her former owner to
handle. She is housebroken. She
can be protective of her owners.
She is affectionate and likes her
people. She is a puller on the leash.
Tootsie 25729 is 2 years old. Was found in
someone’s basement and they brought her
to us. She was left by her owner that moved
out. She is very friendly and likes attention.

Nutmeg is a wonderful 1.5-2 year old
lab/hound mix and is a great size at about
60 lbs. She is a big love puppy, happy and
healthy and full of life.
Hooch is a very friendly, happy dog. He
absolutely loves everyone he meets and
actually gets upset when people just walk
by and don’t stop to pet him. Hooch gets
along great with female dogs and can play
off leash with the females.
Bingo is a very sweet boy who was pulled
from a high kill shelter. He is approx. 1
yr old and about 70 pounds. He is very
healthy and loves to play. He has the
most beautiful spots and is very striking.
He would love to hear from you. He is
looking for a fun loving family who he can
adopt as his own.
Bridgette Ivana is a 1 year old,
purebred English Setter who is a very
sweet girl. She was surrendered to a
high kill shelter by her family because
they did not have time for her. She
is shy at first meeting and will need
love to earn your trust.
DO YOU REMEMBER WINN DIXIE?? She
was here about 18 months ago - her
original story is below. Well she’s back!
She has turned into a beautiful gentle
girl. She came back because the family
has a small dog and ‘Dixie’ and the little
dog got into a couple of tussels.
I’m miss Willow. I’m a big fluffy beautiful,
and ladylike longhaired white kitty. I came
to the shelter the first time because my people had a new baby, and no more time for
me. Then I got adopted, but my new people
said I was not getting along with their other
cat. They say the third time is a charm, so I’m
hoping someone REALLY special
Hi I’m Desmond. I’m a big handsome
black and white male. I’m the largest
cat at the shelter, and I have also
been there the longest. I have seen
many of my friends come and go. I
wonder when it will be my turn?
I’m Chloe, a short-haired tiger cat with unusually shiny fur. I get a lot of compliments
on my healthy coat. I’m a little shy and like
to sleep a lot during the day. I can be a
little timid around strangers and children,
but once I get to know you I am very loving and like to be petted.

really nice boy and he loves to be petted.
He, too, was a the Seekonk Petco, and he
did very well there.
Pepper is a full grown cat who was
dumped. She is a domestice short hair
black and white and she has been
spayed, rabies, distemper and tested for
aids and luke; she is negative.
Angelina and her sister came to us as
her owner moved and left them behind
when he did so. Fortunately for them,
the brother found out and went to the
now vacant apartment and took the
two girls.

currently at a local shleter and their time
is almost up! Can you help???? They are
Heuey, Dewey and Louis. All of them look
a like, white with black
Fenway is a 1 year old gorgeous Golden
mix. He was brought in because he didn’t
get along with the cats in the house.
Fenway knows, “sit” “down” and “paw”.
But, he could use an experienced owner to
teach him his role in the household. He can
be pushy, and may jump up, so no small
children, please. Fenway is house trained
and crate trained and he LOVES kongs with
Callie is a 2 1/2 year old tortoiseshell
spayed female. Unfortunately she
was hit by a car and as a result has a
plate and screws in her right front leg.
Due to this she can be very sensitive
to being touch or being being picked
up. Callie needs a home that will
understand her and give her space
Meet Razzle. He is a 2 year old friendly
Chocolate Lab. Razzle was brought in
because he was “too strong for children
at home”. He has lived his whole life
outside, so it is no surprise he needs some
training. The RISPCA offers a discount
to adoptees who attend obedience
classes. Razzle is very sweet and social,
but doesn’t know his own strength.
Brady is a 1 year old Lab mix. His owner
brought him in because they didn’t
have time for him. This dog has a TON
of potential. He spent most of his time
outside, so he could use a little training
and socializing. But, that should be easy,
because wants he gets to know you he is
a big lovebug.

Buddy is a gorgeous three year old 35lb terrier
mix. He was rescued from a dam up in the Puerto
Rican mountains where he was found emaciated and
terrified. Despite his rescue over a year and a half ago,
Buddy is still demonstrating a debilitating fear of almost
everything. His rescuers feel that they while they are
able to give him food and medical care, they can not
devote enough one on one time to him, which is key in
overcoming his extreme shyness. He is very gentle and
intelligent and would do well in a patient, loving home

L
ike millions of people, Peggy
(Molly Shannon) has found a comfortable niche in which to live. She
has a solid administrative job, close family
and the dependable companionship of her
dog, Pencil.
This stable status quo is rocked when
Pencil’s sudden death leaves Peggy reeling
in a world devoid of meaning without
him. Her quest for happiness leads her to
the attractive, yet ambiguous Newt (Peter
Saarsgard) who introduces her to animal
activism, a vegan lifestyle and even a new
dog. Inspired by Newt, Peggy unleashes
an obsession with animal rights and dog
placement which greatly concerns her
brother (Thomas McCarthy), sister-in-law
(Laura Dern), best friend (Regina King),
neighbor ( John C. Reilly) and boss ( Josh
Pais) who all feel her life is dangerously
out of balance.
Unable to overcome continuing disappointment with her fellow human beings,
Peggy ultimately makes a heartfelt commitment to the animal world, where, for
her, the love is unconditional and satisfaction is guaranteed.
“The movie is a lot about obsessive thinking,” says writer-director Mike
White. “I don’t think they are extreme
characters, but they’re kind of obsessed
with where they derive their happiness and
where they think Peggy should derive her
happiness.”
White points to Robin, Peggy’s boss,
who is obsessed with material success, her

brother and sister-in-law who are consumed with their children and Layla, Peggy’s office worker and best friend, who only can think about the joys of getting married.
Producer Dede Gardner adds, “YEAR OF THE DOG is about how people don’t
listen to people and how they get very wrapped up in their own lives, not even in a selfish way, but in a kind of matter of fact way.
“It’s a real comment on our failings as human beings to listen to other human beings, and suggests that pets are a legitimate source of comfort and companionship.”
White, whose previous writing efforts include Orange County, The Good Girl and
School of Rock, has assembled an exceptional ensemble cast, which includes Molly
Shannon, John C. Reilly, Regina King, Laura Dern and Peter Saarsgard.
The role of Peggy was specifically written for Shannon, notes White. “I knew she
