Project development Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands The heart of Amsterdam’s Oostelijke Handelskade dockyards – with direct traffic connections to the passenger terminal for cruise liners and the city’s new music centre – witnessed the recent birth of the four-star Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre. Realised by the Ebertz & Partner corporate group in close collaboration with the owner, the international hotel chain Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts AG, and the investor WestInvest Gesellschaft für Investmentfonds mbH of Düsseldorf, a subsidiary of WestLB AG, this new building is setting the trend: 408 rooms on twenty storeys, an unusual format for Amsterdam placing it among the city’s tallest buildings. When the Ebertz & Partner corporate group purchased this top establishment in 1998, its fame had already waned a little and many of its features were obsolete. Extensive renovation was due if this 300room hotel was to come up to modern standards. Dorint AG announced its interest in taking over the hotel after modernisation. Yet it all turned out differently. A detailed study showed that demolition and rebuilding was the only economical solution. However, the idea of initiating a closed-end real estate fund to finance this mighty project soon gave way to a definite buying interest by DIFA Deutsche Immobilien Fonds AG. With close links to industrial credit cooperatives this company for open-end real estate funds intended to buy the hotel provided that a long-term lease with Dorint AG was submitted.
