Jeffrey Sirbu, Colorado Canadian pine squirrel variant created by Wes Wada - 2012 Tuesday, January 1, 2013 MATERIALS LIST Thread: Danville Monocord, black or a 6/0 or 3/0 tying thread Hooks: Front - Mustad #3366 Clouser hook, #6 Rear - 2XL curved shank, straight eye #10 Flash: Red flash fiber of choice, 1 or 2 strands Tail: Canadian Pine Squirrel mini-zonker - Black Body: Canadian Pine Squirrel, as above Articulation Joint: Beadalon .015mm 19-wire, 12# test Collar: Spirit River UV2 Multispectrum dubbing additive, dark Bead: 2.4mm copper or gold brass bead Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Start thread and wind to mid-point of hook shank. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tie in middle of flash fiber. Single strand of red flash material. Preferred is Fluoroflash or red, hanked Lite Brite or Angel Hair. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Pull both ends of flash fiber to rear. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Wrap over folded portion of flash to anchor. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Flash fibers tied on hook shank, pointing directly to rear. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Separate hairs in pine squirrel zonker to expose skin area. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tie zonker strip to hook shank. Alternately wind in front and in back of tie-in point. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Rotate hook and apply super glue to thread tie-in area on bottom of fly. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Advance thread to front of fly. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Palmer zonker strip around shank to behind hook eye. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tie off zonker strip at head. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Carefully cut off excess strip. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Trim thread and glue “head”. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Mount front hook with bead in place. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Start thread behind bead and wind to rear of straight part of shank Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tie in Beadalon and wrap to behind bead. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Insert Beadalon through rear hook eye. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Fold over Beadalon to make a loose loop and lightly secure with thread. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Pull tag end of Beadalon to tighten loop. Then wrap thread to rear. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Cut off tag end of Beadalon with scissors. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Super glue thread covered shank and Beadalon thoroughly. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Tie in rear end of 2nd zonker strip. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Palmer strip forward to behind hook eye. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Carefully cut off excess zonker strip. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Wrap a band of tying thread behind bead to secure zonker. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Optional: Wrap a band of dubbing to make a contrasting collar or hot spot.
