This book is a journey through counting involving famous fairy-tale characters. Count from one to ten, then back again. Suggestions for Use: Engage the child/children by looking at the front cover of the book. Ask them what they can see and also to count what they can see. For example: “there are three apples”. Start at the beginning of the book. Read the text and encourage the child/children to find other objects on the page with the same number. For example, on the “three little pigs” page there are also three cupcakes, three apples, etc. On pages where there are images of animals, ask the child/children what sounds the animals make. 2 Animal 123 Ages: 2-4 years Product Description: From 1 to 10 and more, Animal 123 will help your child to count through the animal kingdom. With this colourful collection of more than 100 lavishly illustrated animals, learning your 123 is easy. Suggestions for Use: Ask the child/children to name any animals that they recognise on the front cover. Start at the beginning of the book and ask the child/children to name the animals they see. Encourage them to count the number of animals on the page with you. Ask them to identify the colours of the animals. Repeat the above but open the book at random pages. When you have finished reading the book, ask the child/children if they can remember any of the animals in the book, and how many there were. Ask the child/children questions about the animals on each page. For example: “What sound does it make?”; “Where does it live?” 3 A ‘Melukerdee’ Counting Book SETAC (South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation) Ages: 0-5 years Product Description The 'Melukerdeee Counting Book' has been published to pay respect and recognition to the Melukerdee people who were the traditional custodians of the South East region of Tasmania and to share some of the ancestors’ traditional ways. The beautiful photos in the book illustrate some of the natural features of the land that were significant in traditional daily lifestyles. Water was a crucial part of survival which has influenced the theme of this book. Suggestions for Use Start at the beginning of the book and ask the child/children to name anything they might recognise. Take the book outdoors and point out any of the objects in the garden. Take the book with you and walk in the bush or on the beach together to discover any of the objects in the book. Encourage the child/children to count the number of objects on the page with you and identify both the numbers and written words. Repeat the above but open the book at random pages. 4 Australian Animals 123 Bambi Smythe Ages: 2-4 years Product Description Australian illustrator, Bambi Smyth, has created an energetic and vast pool of Australian animals who will swim, hop, climb and fly their way into young reader’s imaginations. This pretty board book shows that counting is lots of fun, especially when it teaches you about Australian wildlife too. Suggestions for Use Ask the child/children to name the animal on the page. Assist them with any animal names they are not sure of. Encourage the child/children to act out the verb on each page: e.g. diving, dancing and dozing. Demonstrate the verb first and then ask the child/children to copy you. 5 Baby’s First Learning Book 123 Biramax Publishing Staff Ages: 1+ years Product Description: This brightly illustrated board book introduces key early learning concepts in a visual and engaging way. It helps build knowledge of number relationships and encourages recognition of numbers. Suggestions for Use: Ask what the objects are on the page and assist with the names of objects that are unfamiliar. Ask the child/children what sound the animal makes, or what colours they can see. Count the numbers with the child/children and ask them to point out how many of each object they can recognise. Ask them to repeat and read the numbers together. When you have finished the book, ask the child/children what their favourite animal, colour, object was. Count forwards and count backwards, looking at the pages together as you go along. 6 Baby Steps: Let’s Learn Numbers Five Mile Press Staff Ages: 2+ years Product Description: Let's learn about the things all around us with these fun, bright books of first concepts. Things that move, things that make noise and lots of other cute things for babies and toddlers to explore. Suggestions for Use: Start with the front cover of the book. Ask the child/children what they can see. Count the different images on the cover with the child/children. Start at the beginning of the book and ask the child/children what they see on the page. Count the number of objects on the page with the child/children. Ask the child/children to show how many objects there are on the page by holding up the same number of their fingers. For older children, ask them what colours they can see on each page. 7 Early Learning 123 Flash Cards Ladybird Books Staff Ages: 3+ years Product Description: This flashcard pack is perfect for familiarising young children with first numbers. Each of the double-sided cards has different objects or patterns of dots to count, plus the numerals and written number words from 0 to 20. Also included in the pack are comprehensive hints and tips and ideas for fun games to play. Suggestions for Use: There are 3 different sets of cards in the pack: 1- The orange and yellow cards have images to count and corresponding numerals and number words on the other side. 2- The blue and yellow cards have numbers written numerically and also written in words and corresponding number of dots on the other side. 3- The final 10 cards contain counting games to help teach sorting and matching. For children who are new to counting, start by holding up real objects around them. For example, hold up two blocks or toys and ask them to find a card that has the same number of dots on it. You can repeat the above activity by holding up a card with a picture on it and asking the child/children to find the yellow card with the same number of dots. For very young children, place the number cards in order from 1-5. Ask the child/children to find the card with the same number of dots, starting from 1. 8 Farm 123 Rod Campbell Ages: 1+ years Product Description: A lift-the-flap book. With bold illustrations and chunky flaps to lift, this is a perfect introduction to animals and counting. Suggestions for Use: Start at the beginning of the book. Encourage the child/children to name the animals on each page. Ask the child/children what sound the animals on the page make. Assist the child/children in counting the number of animals on the page. When you have finished reading the book, ask the child/children if they can remember what animals were in the story. Now the trusted Play School team bring it to life in this delightful board book! Suggestions for Use: Start at the beginning of the book. Ask the child/children how many ducks they can see on the first page. Count them together with the child/children. Ask the child/children what sound a duck makes. As you read the story, encourage child/children to join in with the “quack, quack, quack, quack” part. This story can also be sung. 10 I can count Dick Bruna Ages: 2-5 years Product Description: This book introduces shapes, colours, and numbers. Suggestions for Use: Start by looking at the front cover of the book. Ask the child/children what the picture is of. Assist them if they are unsure. Count the number of socks together with the child. Ask the child/children what colour the socks are. Assist them if they are unsure. Ask the child/children what coloured socks they are wearing. Start at the beginning of the book. Ask the child/children what number they can see on the page. Ask them what the object is on the opposite page and count them together. For example: “Four. There are four spoons”. After reading the book, ask the child/children if they can remember some of the pictures in the book and how many there were. Go back to the book and check together to see if they were right. 11 Let’s Count Kisses Karen Hull Ages: 2+ years Product Description: The animals are being kissed by butterflies, who increase in number, one by one, so the book has a cumulative counting element from 1-10. The butterflies are hiding under the flap on each page. Suggestions for Use: Start at the beginning of the book. Read each page and count with the child/children the number of butterflies on the page. Some pages require the flap to be lifted to see the butterflies. For older children, ask them how many butterflies they think will be under the flap. Ask the child/children about the different animals on each page. The My First 123 Wall Cards teach young children important skills such as recognising number shapes, counting from 1 - 20, simple addition and simple subtraction. With cute illustrations, these beautifully designed wall cards can be displayed together as a wall frieze or used individually as flash cards. Suggestions for Use Put the cards in order (blue side of cards) and begin with the number 1. Read out loud the number on the card and ask the child/children to repeat the number with you until they are ready to repeat it on their own. Shuffle the cards and hold up a number. Ask the child/children to say what number it is and assist them if they are not sure. Repeat the above using the yellow side of the cards which display objects. This time count the number of objects. Display cards in numerical order on a wall. The best way to display the cards is with the picture side showing. Additional ideas for use are included in the pack along with activities suitable for older children. 13 Numbers Large Floor Puzzle Hinkler Books Ages: 3-5 years Product Description A fun and colourful floor puzzle with large pieces that are perfect for smaller hands to use. Show them how to find the outside pieces first and fit them together. Then work on completing the inside of the puzzle. Point to the numbers starting at 1 and say each number. Ask the child/children to repeat each number after you. Beginning at 1, ask the child/children what they can see in each number square. Assist them with counting the number of objects in each square. Ask the child/children to make up stories about what is happening in each square, for example: in the number 2 square: “there are 2 rabbits. They are happy and are about to eat carrots for their lunch. There are 2 carrots, one for each rabbit”. 14 Numbers: Early Learning Fun for the Very Young Priddy Books Staff Ages: 1+ years Product Description: With flaps that lift and tabs that pull, learning numbers is fun. The book encourages number skills, speaking skills and hand-eye coordination. Suggestions for Use: Start at the beginning of the book. Encourage the child/children to say what the number is on the page. Pull out the tab and count the number of objects that appear. Ask the child/children to hold up the same number of fingers as the number of objects on the page. Alternatively, the child/children could clap the same number of times as the number of objects on the page. Ask the child/children what colour the objects are on the page. At the end of the book, ask the child/children if they can remember some of the things they saw in the book and how many there were. 15 Numbers in Nature Illustrated by Jillian Phillips Ages: 3+ years Product Description: The set includes an illustrated board book with simple content plus 20 chunky game cards perfect for memory match, go fish, sorting and developing counting skills. Suggestions for Use: Start at the beginning of the book. If working with a group of children, divide them into two groups and give each group a set of cards. Read the book and ask each group to hold up a card that matches the page. Alternatively, give each child in the group a card and randomly open the book at a page and encourage children to match their card to the correct page. Use just the book and invite the child/children to identify the animal on the page and count them. You could also ask them what colour the animal is and/or what sound it makes. Puzzle play helps children develop fine motor skills, cognition, and visual senses. Suggestions for Use: Empty the numbers out of the puzzle and put them in order from 1-10. Place the numbers back into the puzzle board. Empty out the numbers and assist the child/children with matching the number shape to the puzzle outline Take the numbers out of the puzzle one at a time. Ask the child/children what the picture is underneath each number. Suggestions for Use: Ask the child/children to describe the front cover of the book. Together, count the number of chicks and balloons. Ask questions about the different colours on the page. For example: “What colour is this balloon?” Start at the beginning of the book. Read each page to the child/children and get them to find where the chicks are hiding on each page. For older children and children familiar with the story, encourage them to read the story as you go along. Suggestions for Use: Start reading the book from the beginning. Explain any vocabulary that the child/children does not know. For example ‘eiderdown’. Ask child/children about what they see on each page. Ask the child/children to count their own fingers and toes. Alternatively, hold up your fingers and ask the child/children to count how many you are holding up. Simple spreads and clear, easy-to-read text make this an ideal format for early readers. Suggestions for Use: Choose a picture, read the rhyme, meet a new engine every time. On each page there are animals or objects that correspond with the number of the page. Encourage the child/children to count the animals or item. Ask the child/children to identify the different colours of the trains. With very young children, point and say the colour then encourage them to repeat. Ask the child/children to describe the expression on the train’s face. Ask them why they think the train might be feeling this way. 23 The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eric Carle Ages: 2-4 years Product Description: A newly hatched caterpillar munches his way through all kinds of food in this story for the very young. Suggestions for Use: Read the story from the beginning. Ask the child/children to name the different types of fruit before you read what they are. Do the same for what he ate on Saturday. After reading the book, ask the child/children if they can remember some of the things the very hungry caterpillar ate. Look back through the book together and check their answers. Suggestions for Use: Play the DVD from the beginning. Encourage the child/children to sing along and copy the actions for each song. Choose a song from the DVD that the child/children may already be familiar with, for example: ‘Five Little Ducks’ or ‘Ten in the Bed’. Encourage the child/children to sing along and copy the actions of the children on the DVD. For songs that the child/children may not be familiar with, encourage them to copy the actions of the children in the song. Songs may need to be played a few times before the child/children become(s) familiar with them. 25 Count With Me 123 CD STeP123 Program – The Salvation Army Ages: 0-5 years Product Description: Count With Me 123 CD provides the opportunity for parents, caregivers and children to engage in learning numbers together through singing. The songs on the CD are the same as in the DVD which makes them ideal for assisting children in learning the lyrics. Suggestions for Use: Play songs from the CD that may be familiar to the child/children, for example: ‘Five Little Ducks’. Encourage the child/children to sing along to the lyrics. The songs may need to be played a number of times before the child/children become(s) familiar with all of the words. Play a song from the CD that the child/children know(s) the actions to from the DVD. Ask them to perform the actions while they are singing the song. Play a song from the CD and encourage the child/children to make up their own actions. 26 Number Ball Ages: 3-5 years Product Description: The number ball is a fun alternative to using flash cards. It introduces children to the numbers 0 – 9. The ball can also be used for teaching colours. Suggestion for Use: Roll the ball to the child/children and ask them to point to a number on the ball and say what it is. Roll the ball to the child/children and ask them to point to the number that represents their age. Call out a number on the ball. Roll it to the child/children and ask them to point to the number. 27
