Law Clerk Program
Sandra
Foley
Welcome to and from the Law Clerk Program at KLC
College. I am the Instructor for the Law Clerk Program in the Office and Business Administration Program. My name is Sandra Foley and I have been instructing for the past nine years. After graduating
from Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario and then
studying Criminology and Corrections at Carleton
University in Ottawa, I have been employed as a Law
Clerk since 1985 in different areas of law in the cities
of Ottawa, Belleville and Kingston. I have enjoyed
my career as a law clerk over several years working
and assisting lawyers in several areas of the law. It
truly has been a life long learning process with many
positive experiences.
I thoroughly enjoy instructing students in their Program at KLC College. It is a very rewarding experience to witness first hand the continued success of our
students launching their careers in a wide variety of
areas of law in both the private and public sectors. Our
students have been successful in securing employment
with law firms, corporations, municipalities, as well as
the provincial and federal governments in the immediate and surrounding areas.
The team at KLC College offers experience, flexibility
and support in helping you to plan for your future.
We will work with you to help you meet your needs in
order for you to master your goals and achieve your
career aspirations. It seems like only yesterday, I was
sitting at a desk absorbing the material and excited to
get started to apply my knowledge to a real live job. I
look forward to meeting with you to discuss the law
clerk program at KLC College and how we can work
with you to make it happen!

minute!
Deciding to continue my education was not a decision that
was made lightly. I was a stay at home mom, and the idea of
returning to a full time school schedule was hard to do. It
was through a friend’s recommendation that I contacted
KLC College. From the first meeting, the admissions counsellor listened to my personal situation, and together we
were able to form an education plan that worked best with
my lifestyle, and made my goals of becoming a Law Clerk
achievable.
The support I received throughout my learning experience
was exceptional. The instructors are not only educated in
their field, but also brought forth their own personal work
experiences. It was a huge advantage being taught by someone who works in the field that I would be entering upon
graduation. It was a privilege to have access to both the
Kingston and Smith Falls faculty; this, coupled with weekly
one on one meetings gave me the courage and the drive to
excel in my program and graduate with honours.
On completion, I was immediately employed for a temporary summer position in a reputable law office. I was then
hired by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law
Division, where I continue to have a rewarding and successful career.
I would like to thank Sandra Foley and KLC for your dedication and support. I am thankful that schools like KLC exist, who are willing to listen and work with individuals so
that they can achieve their personal goals and dreams. Congratulation to the team at KLC for a job well done, you have
made a difference in my life!

Lindsy DeJong—Case Management
Coordinator of the Kingston Crown
Attorney’s office
I came to attend the Law Clerk program at KLC
College in 2010 as a mature student after having
been laid off from my previous job. I decided that
in order find meaningful employment again, I
would need to gain marketability through education. However, as a mature student, the thought of
the process of enrolment and the commitment involved in becoming a full time student was somewhat daunting. I had researched various types of
programs with different styles of delivery, and decided that the continuous intake and schedule flexibility available through the Law Clerk program at
KLC College Kingston Campus would best suit
me.
My initial contact with the college admissions did
much to reassure me in knowing that I had made
the right decision. I received encouragement and
assistance with my program selection process, and
knowledgeable staff on hand to guide me through
the enrolment. Once committed to the Law Clerk
program as a student, I was able to gain a wealth of
knowledge and practical information from my instructor, Sandra Foley, who has had extensive experience working in the legal field. I met with her
once a week, though she always made herself available to me anytime via phone or email if I required.
I was able to choose when I felt I needed one on
one instruction, and when I didn’t; I was able to
work at my own pace. As the program was primarily self-directed, the ability to complete my assignments and exams on a flexible schedule enabled me
to graduate in less than a third of the time I would
have spent earning my Law Clerk diploma in a
conventional educational setting. I was also able to
find and complete two co-op placements, with
Children’s Aid Society, as well as the Crown
Attorney’s Office, providing excellent exposure and opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge I had gained at KLC
College. With such personalized support and flexibility to
tailor my learning experience, I was able to graduate at the
top of my class, and begin looking for work as a newly qualified Law Clerk.
I was very fortunate not to have to look for work for long; my
first placement with Children’s Aid Society had been so successful and positive, that I was offered employment shortly
after I graduated. I enjoyed the unique setting, and honed the
application of my Family Law course there. I gained confidence in creating legal documents, court filing, service of
documents, and some of the finer intricacies of the legal aspects of child protection. Although my job at Children’s Aid
Society was stimulating and fulfilling, I knew from my co-op
experience at the Crown Attorney’s office in Kingston that
my real interest lay in Criminal Law. Opportunity would present itself again, and I was contacted regarding a Legal Administrative Assistant position available there, thanks to the
exceptional ability I was able to demonstrate through the tenure of my placement. I accepted this position, and in a short
time was offered a position as the Case Management Coordinator of the Kingston Crown Attorney’s office. As the Case
Management Coordinator, I am responsible for all disclosure
issues, monitoring trial readiness, brief completeness, liaising
with Crowns, defence counsel and local police services, as
well as other judicial branches and agencies. I have also been
involved in the development and implementation of new file
management technology, as well as the development of new
processes to compliment the technology. In this position I
must demonstrate a great degree of competency and professionalism within a legal environment, which I accredit to my
experience at KLC College. I would recommend the Law
Clerk program at KLC College for anyone looking to enter
into a new career in the legal field. In the beginning, I would
never have imagined the success I have achieved through this
program; the staff and instructor genuinely care and take your
education and success as seriously as you do. KLC College
helped to shape my future in profound and meaningful way.
Law Clerk Success Story
Life Happens Whether You Are Ready or
Not, And Change Happens Whether You
Welcome it or Not.
As a new single mother of a newborn baby,
I made the best decision I could have ever
made. I chose to leave my job of three
years, in search of higher education, in
hopes of a brighter future. What I found was
a wealth of people whose goal is to help me
succeed.
Amanda Briell and her infant daughter
I found that at KLC College. Those around me did not readily
accept my choice, as it was a risky one. Leaving full time work to
return to school was like heading off on a journey to the unknown, and taking my daughter along for the ride. When I arrived
at KLC College; however, I was treated with respect and encouragement to pursue what I sought.
I had decided to continue in the administration field, due to my
years of experience, but I chose to narrow my field of work to the
legal system. I checked the local colleges for programs in this
area of study and found that nothing seemed to fit with my schedule, learning style, and timeframe. When a friend suggested KLC
College, I found exactly what I was had been looking for.
From my very first meeting with Crystal, to get started, to my
weekly meetings with Sandra, for my course, I found nothing but
encouragement and support for my efforts.
I realized early on that this school was different. There have been
no tests aimed at seeing if you fail. Only complete information
and help to ensure you succeed. I thoroughly appreciate the flexibility in the course and the friendly and personable instructors. As
I approach my graduation from this course, I look back on my
short time here at KLC College with nothing but pride and unending gratitude. The instructors and staff at this school have been
amazing and always seem to know just what to say to help keep
motivation going.
I have met some wonderful people here at KLC College, and
thanks to the quality of education, I look forward to pursuing my
career.
Golf Tournament In Support of Multiple Sclerosis Society
KLC College organized a Golf Tournament on Saturday, August 18th at the Inverary Golf and Country Club.
Audrey DeCecco wanted to help KLC College give back to the community and a fundraiser was a perfect
venue. When one of our colleagues was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, the tournament quickly grew.
The organizing committee of Audrey DeCecco, Jane Grant, Cindy Coulter and Cyndi Howe got to work.
They recruited John Grant, Jane’s husband, who is a member of the Inverary Golf and Country Club. John
quickly contacted owner Don Wok who provided a great steak dinner and golf package that allowed us to
sell tickets at a reasonable price so that we raised $2100.00. Don Wok and his staff pitched in to make the
day a success.
Many donors amazed us with their generosity. Hyundai Kingston, thanks to Joe Coulter and owner Scott
Sly, provided a brand new Hyundai Elantra GT as the prize for a hole-in-one on the tenth hole. A careful
watch by Cindy Coulter and her binoculars sadly reported only close calls.
A total of sixty-six participants took part in the shotgun tournament. The top score of 60 was obtained by
the team of Ken Hamilton, Steve Williams, Glen Leeder and Andrew Meeks. The most honest team came
in with a score of 116. Jim and Onnie Coulter worked non-stop to acquire the gifts for the prize table. Lori
Coulter, owner of McGinnis Landing, handed out gift certificates at the 4th hole. A prize was won for the
longest drive, both male and female. Each golfer had a ticket for a prize. There were more prizes than golfers thanks to the 37 companies and people who donated!
More money was raised at the dinner with a fifty-fifty draw, tickets on a large gift basket and a Fishing Charter raffle. The organizers and participants had so much fun that they have vowed to double or even triple
the proceeds next year.
