Welcome to the 11th annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the largest pan-Asian stay-cation in Colorado! This year’s festival theme is Gambare, Japan! Gambare means to persevere despite the circumstances – words of encouragement that can apply to our competing race teams, many performers and anyone who is undergoing challenges. With the recent devastation in Japan, it’s only fitting that we highlight Japanese culture as well as the history of Japanese Americans in Colorado in Gateway to Asia. Be sure to stop by our new attraction imaginAsian Mural Collaboration, where artistic creations take shape before your eyes. And, because the sport of dragon boat racing requires physical prowess, we’ve added a Wellness Village where you can get free health screenings and health education. Much gratitude to our sponsors, city officials, volunteers, performers, vendors, exhibitors, race teams and festival guests for making our 11th year possible! On behalf of the Board of Directors and Operations Committee, we hope you have a great time! Domo arigatou gozaimasu! Drink plenty of fluids. If you’re feeling thirsty, immediately find shade and drink water. If you’re feeling faint, our on site paramedics are here to help. Use sunscreen and wear a hat. Block out those harmful UV rays and buy a souvenir hat in our Marketplace or Festival Merchandise booth. Sunscreen is available for festival goers at the misting tent, free of charge. Don’t go swimming or wading. It’s against the law at the lake and it’s for your own safety. Don’t pitch a tent or bring your grill. We’ve designed the festival with the best visibility possible and with amazing choices in food. Enjoy the shade from trees and the cuisine from our food vendors instead. Leave your pets at home. Our crowds are too large and the weather too hot to risk losing, injuring or stressing your precious pets at the park. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased and consumed on site. None may be brought onto the festival grounds. Please do not drink and drive, drink and pedal, or drink and scoot. We want you back next year! Smoking is not permitted within any tent, structure, or in any seating area on the festival site. The park is big, so please light up elsewhere. Bicycles, skateboards and in-line skates are allowed in the park but not on festival grounds. Park your bike at the bike corral or walk. All packages are subject to search. Please, no glass containers, large placards, fliers or signs on festival grounds. These will be confiscated. Please pick up after yourself. The Sloan’s Lake neighborhood is a beautiful area. Help us leave the park and surrounding areas clean by recycling your items in designated containers and using trash cans that are available throughout the festival site. Lost and Found. Please report any missing items/people, or bring found items/people to Volunteer headquarters, located near the entrance to the Taste of Asia food court. I am honored to serve as the Honorary Chair this year. This festival is not only a celebration of our heritage, culture and accomplishments, but also an invitation to share with everybody in Colorado and beyond. I salute the vision of the founders and the dedication of the organizers, volunteers, and participants that have made this annual festivity a success, year after year. More importantly, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to our supporters, friends and guests. I sincerely hope that your participation in this Festival is enjoyable, informative, and experientially enriching. Best wishes, Rudolph Lie, Ph.D. AWAKENING THE DRAGON OPENING CEREMONY Presented by A tradition since the first Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the Awakening the Dragon Opening Ceremony is a beautiful and spiritual ritual. We’ll start off the festivities with the always-popular Team Parade, which is our version of the Olympics opening ceremonies where the teams march into the stadium. Only our teams may be wearing wacky hats or costumes, and be accompanied by folks in ethnic dress to represent their communities. The Opening Ceremony itself is a cultural spectacle, featuring Buddhist monks and temple members chanting and blessing the festival and all the competitors, then performing a beautiful, spiritual, traditional Eye Dotting Ceremony where invited dignitaries “dot the eyes” of the dragon boats to awaken the spirit of the dragons. Immediately following is a spectacular 75foot Dragon performance powered by Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu Association. For 2011, we’re also honored to have the talents of a pair of Asian Americans who will start off the festival with their vocal talents on the “Star Spangled Banner.” Elaine and Emily Kazutomi are both seniors at Columbia Southern University. Twins, the Kazutomi sisters have volunteered at CDBF in the past, and are active in many community organizations and competed in many pageants. 17 18 OPENING CEREMONY EMCEES CHRIS JOSE KDVR Fox 31 KWGN DEBORAH TAKAHARA KDVR Fox 31 KWGN GIL ASAKAWA University of Colorado Nikkeiview.com NELSON GARCIA GLENN ASAKAWA AUDRA ENSIGN University of Colorado High Noon Entertainment AMANA MIYAMAE PATTI MOON KUSA/9News Rock N’ Roll Marathon Series JOE NGUYEN YourHub.com KIM NGAN NGUYEN TheDenverChannel.com E MC E E S FESTIVAL EMCEES KRDO Newschannel 13 ANDY VUONG The Denver Post 19 20 IMAGINASIAN MURAL COLLABORATION The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is pleased to introduce a brand-new element to our cultural palette this year: The imaginAsian Mural Collaboration. It’s a showcase of artists working with you — the public — to illustrate a theme for each year. This year’s theme is “Ode to Japan,” and we’ll have four separate art projects by different organizations during the festival. Some of the mural panels from the imaginAsian Collaboration will be auctioned at the annual Fall CDBF Gala as a fundraiser for next year’s festival. Your suggestions are going on this mural! Arts Street, is a non-profit organization that mentors and trains underserved youth to learn skills so they can enter careers in the arts. Arts Street’s “Ode to Japan” project is based on YOUR suggestions on what represents Japanese culture and art. The public was invited to send an email to [email protected], and the Arts Street teachers incorporated your suggestions. The teachers merged all your images into two murals, outlined them on board, and are painting it on site with help of the public. www.arts-street.org Watch cool comic artists make art! Come and watch the creative artists who make comics for Squid Works paint a three-sided mural with the “Ode to Japan” theme! Squid Works is a Colorado-based comic book creator’s cooperative. Their members consist of independent cartoonists, artists, and writers. While the styles and types of offerings are varied at Squid Works, there is a unifying level of passion and originality provided by its members. Squid Works is actively involved in local comic events and annually administers events such as the 24-Hour Comic Challenge where participants challenge themselves to draw a 24 page comic book in 24 continuous hours. Rawh Expressions is a Denver-based mural and clothing company that pushes freedom of expression for youth. Through painting, poetry, photography, fashion, and other innovative forms of art, they create work that is authentic and unexpected. They work with the community to spark creativity and collaborate with local artists to produce diverse and unique designs. You can help three Rawh artists, Ratha Sok, Khundy Son and Jin Oh with their CDBF project and maybe even get to spray paint a bit of graffiti on the mural panels. www.be2kool.com Attach notes, comments, art, crafts, fabric to multimedia artwork! This multimedia collaboration incorporates your contributions attached along with crocheted flowers and other Japan-themed items, to a piece constructed by the Ladies Fancywork Society. You can even bring over origami cranes and other pieces you’ve folded from the Dragonland kids’ area to the mural. The Ladies Fancywork Society began in 2007 as an underground crochet streetart crew bent on spreading fiber art throughout Denver and has grown into an artist collective capable of putting together large-scale projects, international art shows, and installations. www.ladiesfancyworksociety.com The imaginAsian Mural Collaboration is funded in part by Denver County SCFD Collaboration Funds. 21 22 Our official merchandise includes a variety of apparel and collectible items including our beautiful commemorative poster, created by graphic artist Shawn Mingjiang Xiong, from Ft. The festival has featured dozens of individual artists, organizations and groups playing music, dancing and even doing standup comedy over the years. The Main Performing Arts Stage proves that our history is rich with wonderful performing arts traditions, but that Asian Americans are into every facet of American culture. 29 GATEWAY TO ASIA 30 Gateway to Asia is the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival's showcase for pan-Asian culture, featuring intimate and enlightening lectures, performances and demonstrations that lets audiences see up close how to trim a bonsai tree, how to make a Hawai'ian flower lei or how to write Chinese calligraphy. Each year, Gateway to Asia also focuses on one or more Asian communities, and this year CDBF is proud to put the spotlight on Japan. After Japan had been named as the Gateway to Asia focus for 2011, the tragic earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster struck northern Japan, making our presentation in Gateway a poignant choice. Come and learn about the country and its customs and traditions, and learn also about the history of Japanese Americans in Colorado, including Amache, the concentration camp in southeast Colorado where 10,000 Japanese photo by Americans were imprisoned during Kit Williams WWII. You'll also see many traditional Japanese performers and martial arts groups on the Gateway to Asia stages, and see intimate demonstrations of Japanese culture. Decorate a Chinese mask or Asian fan, learn how to fold Origami (Japanese paper folding), or have your face painted by students from the Colorado Chinese Language School. With the 2011 theme of “Gambare Japan” (“Persevere Japan”), the origami folding at Dragonland will focus on making origami cranes, which are a traditional Japanese symbol of hope. Kids can learn how to fold cranes from Fol-D, an origami master, and then attach them to the interactive art project at the imaginAsian Mural Collaboration. For the first time, we’re also going to feature Asian Storytelling by community leaders, who will read the classic tales of their culture, from Japanese and Chinese to Filipino, and more, throughout the weekend. For 2011, two new Asian-inspired games will also entertain as well as keep your kids coming back for more. It’s an acknowledgement of young Asian Americans’ interest in hip-hop dance, music and poetry, and at the same time it’s also a reflection of the diversity and inclusiveness of hip-hop culture in general! This year, Cultural Unity has a larger stage and more entertainment than ever before. You’ll groove to Denver’s top DJs, including world famous DJ Vajra and our hometown hero, DJ Chonz; see some of the hottest hip-hop dance crews in the region performing; intense exhibition battles of some of the fastest rising Bboys and Bgirls in the scene; and not to forget thought-provoking spoken word as well as high energy martial arts demonstrations! There will also be performances of pure rhythm — Denver Taiko moves over from the Main Performing Arts Stage for a demonstration of Japanese drumming, and Kissidugu will showcase West African drumming styles. Stop by and get down with the funky sounds and get ready for a rocking weekend of Cultural Unity! Photos by Theodore Lau Photos by Kit Williams Presented by Almighty I.Z. In ancient China, Chu Yuan, a poet, warrior, and loyal aid to the Emperor, fell victim to plots and deception, and fell out of favor with the Court. When the old Emperor died, Chu Yuan was unjustly banished and wandered the countryside writing poems he hoped would be heard and heeded by the new Emperor. Despondent, he finally threw himself into the Mi Lo River. His devoted followers, learning of his death, beat their paddles on the water and banged drums and gongs to frighten away the fish from Chu Yuan’s body. Athletes the world over still meet to commemorate Yuan’s sacrifice for honor and justice. The sport has grown into an international competitive event, with Dragon Boat Races held around the globe from Hong Kong to Sydney, and San Francisco to London. At the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the sport has grown from 16 teams in our first year to 52 teams this year competing in various divisions. RACE DIVISIONS As in 2010, two types of boats will be used this year at CDBF: “Taiwan style” aka “Flag Catching” boats, which we’ve brought back by popular demand, and the international standard “Hong Kong” style boats. The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival now owns two of each type of boat. TAIWAN-STYLE (FLAG-CATCHING) DIVISIONS photo by Judy Miranda Each team must have a minimum of 8 male and 8 female paddlers, with the other 2 paddlers of your choosing. You must also have a drummer and flag catcher. A steersman for all races will be provided by CDBF. All races will be 250m long. Here are the Flag-Catching Divisions for 2011: Recreational FC Division – 18 paddlers, 1 drummer, 1 flag catcher. This is a non-competitive adult division. Corporate FC Division – 18 paddlers, 1 drummer, 1 flag catcher. Team must be sponsored by a corporation or non-profit group, and most of the team members are employees or related to employees of the corporation. 36 Youth Division – 18 paddlers, 1 drummer, 1 flag catcher. Composed of paddler’s ages 13 to 17 year old. (Note: Any team with over-aged paddlers will be disqualified.) HONG KONG (HK) STYLE DIVISIONS Each team must have a minimum of 8 male and 8 female paddlers, with the other 4 paddlers of your choosing. You must also have a drummer. Here are the Hong Kong Style divisions for 2011: Recreational HK Division – 20 paddlers, 1 drummer. A steersman will be provided by CDBF. This is a non-competitive adult division. Races are 250m Competitive HK Division – 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, 1 steersman. Competitive teams racing a standard 500m course. DRAGONBOAT RACING ASSOCIATION OF COLORADO (DRACO) www.cdbf.org/racing/draco For those of you who love the thrill of competition, consider racing competitively with the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado! DRACO was formed in 2007 (originally established as CDBRA), a non-profit organization whose goal is to increase awareness and excitement for this fast-growing sport, and to train competitive dragon boat paddlers and teams so that they’re ready to compete at national and international races. Practices during warm weather take place at Standley Lake, using Hong Kong-style boats which are lighter, narrower and sit lower in the water than Taiwan-style boats. We also now have a Dragon Boat Simulator that DRACO members can use to practice all year ’round, in the pool at the Wheat Ridge Rec Center. Membership benefits include paddling and coaching clinics, gym workout sessions, steer and coxswain training, use of DRACO dragon boats and equipment for practices, and more. BO AT R AC ING ?
