Aloha, my name is Zaida Urban. I am an
Educational Assistant (EA) here at Makawao
Elementary School. I have been an EA for 24
years now. I started off as a teacher’s aide at a
pre-school on Molokai and later became an EA
at Kilohana Elementary School.
Two years
later, I relocated to Maui and worked at Baldwin
High School before coming to work at Makawao
School.
I love working here because the staff is very
caring and loving. My passion is working with
children and watching them grow into successful
adults.
Zaida Urban
I am a grateful mother of five adult children and
a grandmother to two precious grandchildren.
On my free time, I like to spend time with my
family, go to the beach, and travel.
Educational Assistant
My name is Sharon Eakins and I am an “honored
visitor” of Maui for seven years now. I was born and
raised in Oklahoma where I completed my
undergraduate and graduate degrees. I also lived in
Austin, Texas as well as Southern California prior to
moving to Maui.
Although I am possibly the most “senior” staff, I still
feel like that little girl in small town Oklahoma who
always loved school. I have worked as an Autism
Educational Assistant for almost three years now. I
started in the pre-school and now work with a
student in kindergarten. I prefer to work with these
ages because I really am not smarter than a 5th
grader, and that’s okay.
I love Makawao School and the truly “awesome
makawao students.” I have the utmost respect for
our administrators and all school staff, especially
the teachers who do what they do for our students
so that they will have a good education and a great
life.

H.S.A. Testing: Tips on How Parents Can Help:
Before the Test….
•
•
BE PREPARED:
Know your child’s testing date(s). A current schedule has been issued
in the Ho’olaulima, sent home with your child and posted on our website at
www.makawao.k12.hi.us.
BE A CHEERLEADER: Once you know the test is approaching start talking to your child
about it. Let them know what a big deal it is and how much it affects their learning and
school progress. Encourage them to their best and share positive thoughts.

Wednesday, Feb. 5th:

Thursday, Feb. 6th:
Sunglasses Day
Shine On The Test! You Did Your Best!
Friday, Feb. 7th:
Hat Day
Hats Off To You! Congrats You Did It!
DISCUSS CONCERNS: Ask your child about their testing experience on the 1st testing
opportunity and how we can make it better. Determine if there is any anxiety that needs
to be reduced and communicate these concerns with your child’s teacher.
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE TEST: Check out sample questions for the test in your
Parent Information Booklets or online at http://www.alohahsap.org/.
HELP YOUR CHILD WITH THEIR WEAKNESSES FROM PREVIOUS TEST: If your child has
struggled with a particular area or subject in the past, you may be able to help them
overcome some of that difficulty by providing some extra practice. See your child’s score
report for their weaknesses.
On Test Day…
•
•
•
ALLOW ADEQUATE SLEEP: Make sure your child is not tired the days of testing by having
them get to bed early the night before.
NOURISHING BREAKFAST: A good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before
test time can be distracting.
ARRIVE TO SCHOOL ON TIME: As much as possible try not to have a stressful morning.
On a Daily Basis….
•
•
•
•
•
Assist your child with homework and ensuring that your child is completing all homework
assignments.
Ensure that your child has good attendance at school.
Encourage your child to read as much as possible and to increase her vocabulary – even
reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books regularly will help improve reading
skills.
Look for educational games and programs that engage your child.
Help your child learn how to follow directions carefully.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Daily Guide to Children’s Happiness & Where
Is Pip?
For the months of January and February we continue to provide a safe bully-free campus environment.
Carol McCloud’s book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? is a great story in guiding our students in
treating others with kindness. On Thursday, January 16th during morning broadcast students will have
had the opportunity to listen to the video storybook.
A school wide student activity will be to create individual buckets with opportunities to fill it up.
Students are able to fill their buckets by both receiving and showing acts of kindness and respect. When
students are unkind and display unwanted behavior their bucket may dip. Mrs. Manlansing (Mrs. M.)
will be on the lookout on campus for random acts of kindness and post shot outs weekly. Follow up
activity sheets will be distributed. Parents please discuss this activity with your child(ren) and how easy
it is to fill buckets in and out of school. Check out www.bucketfiller101.com for additional resources.
Pip, our Unite Against Bullying, friend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin will also be joining us from now
throughout the remaining of the school year. Where is Pip? This activity will be once a week where Pip
will be hiding out in a classroom with a special message. Students will meet Mrs. M at the morning
broadcast room and have an opportunity to go live with her in sharing that special message with the
entire school. Every class will have an opportunity and receive aUnite Against Bullying bookmark.
Don’t forget orange is the color to remind us to create a safe environment and to wear your orange
wristbands.
Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People
Students will participate in a short presentation, followed by a
hand washing activity and visit to the Germ City Tent.
⇒ If your child has skin sensitivities or allergies to soaps, please
inform us to approve their participation.
During the week of January 27 –January 31 Makawao Elementary School will be participating in Germ
City, presented by Daeni Ito, RN, BSN from Department of Health.
Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People is school and community-based educational project to
enhance awareness and improve effectiveness of hand hygiene, made possible with the University of
Hawai’i, Cooperative Extension Service.
The focus is to:
•
•
Enhance awareness of the importance of good hand hygiene
Improve the effectiveness and frequency of all types of hand hygiene options.
