REGISTEREDCLASSES * 8 • August - November 2013 * STAYINFORMED DCC Diner makes mealtime simple and enjoyable “The food is just so fantastic, and Dave makes the best cream soups I’ve ever tasted. To me, coming here is not only about a great lunch, but about being around people who love to laugh.” For the last two years, Chef Dave has been the kitchen magician at the Downtown Community Centre (DCC). Every day, seniors line up to receive the latest kitchen creations that Dave has to offer. Providing fresh and affordable threecourse lunches every Monday through Saturday, the DCC Diner is getting rave reviews. According to some of the regulars, the DCC Diner is not just about getting a great meal. “It’s a great way to be social and engage with the friends I’ve met here at the DCC” said Kitchener downtown resident, Angie K. Angie has been coming to the DCC Diner for the past three years. At first she came once a week, but now comes three times a week. “The food is just so fantastic, and Dave makes the best cream soups I’ve ever tasted. To me, coming here is not only about a great lunch, but about being around people who love to laugh.” For Chef Dave, cooking is far more than following a recipe. “It’s not just about making a specific food”, says Chef Dave, “it’s about applying methods and techniques to making food that allow freedom with cooking. Many of our patrons join us because it’s a great way to get a healthy meal without the hassle of figuring out what or how to cook for themselves.” With the change in lifestyle for many seniors, it can be tough to create meals at home, especially when it’s for one. For some, cooking was done by their partner, making it difficult to know where to begin. As a result, the DCC team is now at the DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY CENTRE –– offering cooking workshops to help those who want to learn. “We are looking to help make it easier to not only cook, but educate about how to shop, as well store foods properly to get the most benefit and bang for the buck.” said Chef Dave." The DCC Diner is a great way for residents to enjoy a healthy fresh cooked meal. For those who want to also improve the quality of foods they eat at home, we are now offering workshops to learn simple and easy ways to cook when the diner or other healthy alternative isn’t an option." “One of the most important things is to learn about technique”, says Chef Dave. “You don’t need to know how to make a specific soup, you just need to know how to apply methods to make soup.” This fall, Chef Dave will be sharing his passion of cooking through workshops at the DCC. These classes are great options for those who have an interest in learning simple tips on how to make meals without breaking the bank or having enough food to feed an army. “Our goal with the cooking workshops is to help seniors find ways to make food that fits their lifestyle, budget and skill set to stay active and healthy.” said Chef Dave. The single one-time workshops will focus on techniques for making great soups, while the four-week courses will build skills to better cook for one. Both courses will be interactive, fun and educational. You are sure to not only learn a thing or two about cooking, but may find people lining up outside your kitchen of news skills to see what you’ve been creating. August - November 2013 • 9 STAYINFORMED * Tech it to the limit! at the DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY CENTRE –– Nervous non-techies ease into world of computers Learning new skills can often be scary and overwhelming. With the age of technology, people in all stages of life are forced to get on board. Staying in touch with friends and family has never been easier, but for some, the fear of getting near a computer can be too much to handle. The good news is that computers don’t need to be confusing, and the best part is, you don’t need to know it all. Downtown Community Centre’s Bill Klos knows a thing or two about being in the dark about computers. It was 20-years ago that Klos retired from his much-loved career as a high school teacher, but when he retired had no idea how much his future would involve technology. After spending his life teaching others a mixed bag of topics, it was Klos’ turn to be in the student seat. Lucky for Klos, one of his students was kind enough to take on the instructor role and share some computer basics with him. The intro to computers opened a door for Klos, and he began his selftaught journey of the technology world. Today, Klos has over 500 books on his iPad, banks online and chats with friends and family with the use of the internet. “I don’t like the technical part,” said Klos, “but I’ve learned how to have fun with the computer and love showing other people how to do the same.” With his years of experience teaching, Klos’ passion carries on as he instructs several computer classes in the city, including some at the Downtown Community Centre (DCC). “I love helping people,” said Klos, “especially when I see the look on people’s faces when they get the computer to work for them.” As one of the instructors currently working with the DCC to instruct seniors who want to learn how to use computers Klos says: “There are a variety of courses available. Most people come in very nervous, but by the end they are laughing and end up taking more computer courses to further their knowledge.” Learning something new, especially later in life, can be rather nerve-racking. Klos, along with the other instructors at the DCC, makes learning about computers fun and enjoyable and puts students at ease. With small classes of four to eight people, it makes the learning environment relaxed, leaving participants glad they came to conquer their fear of technology. 10 • August - November 2013 * REGISTEREDCLASSES REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 8:30 A.M., AUG 20 Even if you’re not heading back to school, it doesn’t mean you don’t want to learn something new! BEST OF TIMES UPDATE -THE NUMBERS ARE IN! Last fall we asked for your feedback on the Best of Times as part of a larger review of the publication. The goal of the review wasn’t to change what people love – but to enhance the publication to give our readers a better experience. Some of the highlights of the survey were that 88 per cent of respondents read every issue and 83 per cent refer back to it until the next issue is available. We’re proud to deliver a product that is so well valued to our residents. You’ll likely have noticed some of the changes have already been implemented. We’ve heard great things from readers about the new colour cover, feature articles, and overall updated look. These changes were all made based on your feedback, so thanks for sharing your ideas with us! A whopping 91 per cent of you look for the special event listings and more than half have attended a special event based on the information found in the Best of Times. Almost half of respondents wanted to see more articles and nearly 70 per cent read the cover story every issue. Subjects readers would like to see more information about include parks and trails, Centre in the Square, the Kitchener Public Library and the Kitchener Market. SOME OF THE AREAS WHERE PEOPLE WANTED TO SEE IMPROVEMENTS WERE: • The placement of the advertising supplement: Front and Centre - how it broke up the course listings. • The costs associated with mailing the publication: more than 50 per cent would like to pick it up at a centre and some prefer to read it online. • To make it more appealing to younger seniors and baby boomers by jazzing it up and adding new program opportunities. We’re responding to what you told us! We’ve adjusted the front and centre to ensure that the ads no longer split our programming information. Starting with the spring 2014 issue, the Best of Times will no longer be mailed to readers, allowing us to save money that can go towards providing vital services to the community. These changes are just the beginning! We look forward to making continued improvements to the Best of Times to enhance our readers’ experience and provide a valuable resource for our residents. 48 • August - November 2013 * CENTRELOCATIONS Breithaupt Centre Wellington St. Victoria St. Weber St. at the BREITHAUPT CENTRE –– Erb St. King St. 350 Margaret Avenue, Kitchener N2H 4J8 • Phone: 519-741-2502 Fax: 519-741-2609 Union St. at the BREITHAUPT CENTRE –– Margaret Ave. P BREITHAUPT CENTRE Rockway Centre at the ROCKWAY CENTRE –– 1405 King Street East, Kitchener N2G 2N9 • Phone: 519-741-2507 Fax: 519-741-2650 Charles St. Rockway Gardens Ottawa St. at the ROCKWAY CENTRE –– Preston Ave. BUS ROUTE: #8 via Weber, #18 Guelph P King St. E.
