FleaMarket Cover - Remnants of the Past
Collecting is a personal pursuit. Some people have a passion for crowns or teacups. Others want to feather their nest with unique pieces of furniture or find a quirky lamp. We were curious to learn what the hot ticket items are for 2012, and It! talked with three experts in the field to find the answers. Collect Judy Watkins, owner of Remnants of the Past Vintage Show, says, “In these difficult economic times, everybody has turned their focus back to their home. Whatever they find, it’s for their sanctuary, something that’s meaningful to them. A The top 12 finds for 2012 BY REBECCA ITTNER lot of times before, it was, ‘oh it’s pretty, let’s buy it.’ It’s [collecting] a little bit more intimate now.” Judy’s top picks include religious artifacts, antique books, portraits and wireware. At The Farm Chicks Antiques Show in Spokane, Washington, owner Serena Thompson noticed “industrial-looking objects and a lot more metals. Galvanized objects are really popular.” For her top picks, Serena also listed portraits, natural wood furniture and kitchenware. Wood furniture is enjoying resurgence, both natural and painted items. And big is back. Rick Marburger of Marburger Farm Antique Show says, “In 2008 and 2009 we didn’t see many big pieces being brought in by dealers or bought by shoppers. Now, we are seeing much more in the way of big pieces. And we see decorators buying these things speculatively, where we hadn’t seen that in the couple of years previous.” All three experts say that WHAT: Galvanized metal Photo/Becky Cunningham Galvanized metals items, including tubs, buckets and milk pails, can be used to store items—like the sheets and pillows in the tub shown here—or can be used as planters, and more. lighting continues to be popular—vintage crystal chandeliers, old table lamps, sconces and industrial lighting. Here are our top 12 collectibles for 2012. Happy hunting! Use creamers as vases for garden roses, and display silverware upright in silver cups or trophy cups. Photo/Jaimee Itagaki Photo/Jaimee Itagaki Mix and match styles to create your own sanctuary. Here metal chairs and white wicker sport floral fabrics, adding a feminine touch. Don’t be afraid to use these types of pieces inside. The green metal chairs would look great as indoor barstools, while wicker is right for most any room. FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 31 WHAT: Wireware WHAT: Aubusson Photo/Mark Tanner Wireware items can be used throughout your home, and include baskets, shelves, candleholders and more. Use a tiered basket in your home office to hold stationary and stamps or vintage ribbon. and Kilm rugs 32 FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 Photo/Jaimee Itagaki Photo/Mark Tanner Add warmth and color to a room by using an aubusson rug on the floor. Kilm rugs, like those on the white chair, are very versatile; you can stitch them into pillows, hang them on a wall, or lay one across the back of a couch to brighten up a room. FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 33 WHAT: Lighting Still popular are crystal chandeliers, up-and-coming are sconces and chandeliers made from industrial parts. Special lighting can transform any space—bathrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms and even baby nurseries benefit from their beauty. WHAT: Kitchenware Photo/Jaimee Itagaki Photo/Jaimee Itagaki From old sifters and baking tools to bowls and storage tins, kitchenware is so…useful. If something is too beat up to use as it was originally intended, create something fun with it, like this clock. FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 35 WHAT: Portraits Photo/Mark Tanner For big impact, fill an entire wall with old painted portraits. A beautiful portrait is a conversation starter—even if you don’t know the name or history of the person depicted in the painting. Display one above a buffet or lean a couple of different size portraits on a shelf or mantel. WHAT: Primitives Primitives objects, from dolls to furniture, are simple and utilitarian, no fancy curves or embellishments will be found on these items. A primitive cabinet and shelf look great when filled with period items. Or, step out of the box and pair them with silver and crystal; the juxtaposition would create a striking vignette. With their innate character, books add style to any setting. Use them to create layers in vignettes, put a couple under a lamp to lift it up or stack them together on a shelf. Or, add some retro knobs to a wooden dresser. If your pieces are painted, stay within the same or coordinating color families. WHAT: Religious artifacts Photo/Alys Geertsen From rosary beads and crosses to jewel-encrusted crowns, these history filled objects are stunning all on their own. Drape rosary beads from an old frame or set them in a pretty dish. Place a crown on top of a book, in an old urn, or set it under a cloche for a stunning showpiece. 38 FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 Design Trends WHAT’S NOW BY REBECCA ITTNER MIX IT UP— that’s the word on the street from designers in the know. Instead of devising interiors based on a single theme or era, such as farmhouse or primitives or Victorian antiques, design-savvy homeowners are blending furniture and accessories to create spaces that reflect their personal style. Rick Marburger has a front row seat to developing trends in flea market décor, and perhaps some of the factors driving them, at his Marburger Farm Antiques Show. “A younger set is coming into the show. As some of the dealers get older and can’t withstand the rigors of our show—outside, hot, lots of physical Photo courtesy of The Farm Chicks/Christina G. Photography excursion—we see a younger group coming in, both dealers and buyers,” Rick says. Photo courtesy of Remnants of the Past/Jenny Malott Mixing industrial pieces, like the tabletop and cabinets seen here, along with vintage items, like table base and chairs, is a big design trend this year. Blending finishes, tattered with shiny, or soft textures with rough surfaces is also popular. 6 FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 The juxtaposition of modern mixed with a signature vintage piece. —Judy Watkins, Remnants of the Past FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 7 Design Trends posed items.” Framing old linens or vin- “With this I’m seeing newer merchandise tage ephemera in more modern frames is that’s more cutting edge. Serena Thompson, of The Farm Chicks Antiques Show, is noticing interesting developments on the design front. “I am seeing more industrial-looking decorating. This includes a lot more metals—big chunky metal pieces that are being used in the home.” These can include an oversized metal table being used in place of glass-topped or wood table in the dining room. Or old mechanic’s drawers used as storage cabinets and metal lockers Galvanized buckets and other metal pieces used in place of wooden armoires. “There is a place here in Spokane [Washing“Erica Parish and Lana Neuman create amazing pieces by repurposing or reusing these industrial elements in new ways. After flea marketing, take time to walk along the city’s beautiful beaches and stroll through neighborhoods filled with Victorian-era homes. Look up and you're likely to spot handcrafted chandeliers that manage to look both whimsical and industrial. And that's just a start. Former antique shop owner, Judy Watkins, started the show in 2007, and it’s already a favorite with shoppers and shelter magazines alike. Romantic Homes magazine gave it top billing in its 2011 list of the top 10 romantic flea markets. Shabby Chic author Rachael Ashwell named Remnants of the Past as one of her five favorite flea markets. Remnants of the Past is a family affair. You'll see Judy’s husband and children on duty at the show. Feel free to bring your menfolk too. If they get tired of shopping, they can relax in the designated Man Cave until it's time to load the car. The Remnants of the Past Vintage Show takes place at the Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, California, typically in June and October. The market turns down four applicants for every vendor they approve. Then, they arrange the vendors “the way one seats a dinner party.” Market organizers look for personality, display style and chemistry between the vendors. Though unusual, the Randolph Street Market system seems to work. Shoppers blanket the monthly market, and many of the vendors have been discovered by Hollywood set decorators, stylists, store merchandisers and art buyers. The Randolph Street Market opens for business on one weekend each month. Special market sections include the Chicago Antique Market, the Indie Designer Market and Modern Vintage Chicago. Many are shopping to fill their own booths and retail shops. The pieces are fine enough to please their most discriminating customers, and the selling prices are low enough to allow for markup. Show producer Jon Jenkins calls it “the most buyable show in the country.” Jenkins Management also produces the Harwinton/Farmington Antiques & Design Weekend in Harwinton, Connecticut and the Tailgate-Music Valley Show in Hendersonville, Tennessee, which is part of the greater Nashville area. Harwinton weekends take place in June and September. The Nashville event occurs in February. Recent additions to the Tailgate-Music Valley Show include the Vintage Marketplace, which features original and upcycled art, home furnishings and fashion. After a tremendous response—which included a completely new generation of antique-show shoppers— Jenkins plans to open the Vintage Marketplace at the Springfield shows as of May. The Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market takes place at Ohio's Clark County Fairgrounds on the third weekend of each month, except for June, July and December. Jenkins advises first-time attendees to come in May or September, which are three-day Extravaganza weekends with approximately 2000 vendors. springfieldantiqueshow.com; farmingtonantiquesweekend.com; tailgatemusicvalley.blogspot.com FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 PHOTOS COURTESY OF SPRINGFIELD ANTIQUE SHOW/CHELSEA WANN Massachusetts • Old Court House Flea Market (Vicksburg) oldcourthouse.org • The Flea Market/The Salvage Market (Flowood) fleamarketms.com • Tupelo Gigantic Flea Market & Craft Show (Tupelo) tupelofleamarket.net PHOT O COU RTESY OF MA RBUR GER F ARM A NTIQU E SHO W Oklahoma More New York Flea Markets • Brooklyn Flea (Brooklyn) brooklynflea.com • Found in Ithica (Ithica) foundinithaca.com • GreenFlea Market (New York City) greenfleamarkets.com • Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market (New York City) hellskitchenfleamarket.com • Rinaldi Flea Market (Poughkeepsie) rinaldifleamarkets.com • Salt City Antiques Shows (Syracuse) bouckvilleantiqueshows.com • Stormville Airport Flea Market (Stormville) stormvilleairportfleamarket.com North Carolina PHOTO/JAIMEE ITAGAKI • Raleigh Flea Market Every Saturday and Sunday, except during the fair each October North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh raleighfleamarket.net • Funky Junk Flea Market Monthly markets Comanche County Fairgrounds Annex Building in Lawton montagefestivals.com More Oklahoma Flea Markets • Buchanan Markets (Oklahoma City) buchananmarkets.com/OKC.html • Golden Goose Flea Market (Midwest City) goldengoosefleamarket.net • Saturday Flea Market (Tulsa) saturdayfleamarket.com Oregon • Plucky Maidens Junk Fest Three shows per year Locations in and near Portland vary pluckymaidens.blogspot.com More North Carolina Flea Markets • Collingwood Auction and Flea Market Friday, Saturday and Sunday Routes 33 and 34 in Farmingdale collingwoodfleamarket.com More New Jersey Flea Markets Nevada • Serendipity Antique Show June 2 through 4 Reno Livestock Event Center serendipityshows.com More Nevada Flea Markets • Broadacres Open-Air Marketplace (North Las Vegas) broadacresmec.com • Fantastic Indoor Swap Meet (Las Vegas) fantasticindoorswapmeet.com • Berlin Farmer’s Market (Berlin) berlinmarket.com • Columbus Farmers Market (Columbus) columbusfarmersmarket.com • Dover Flea Market & Street Fair (Dover) doverfleamarket.com • Englishtown Auction (Englishtown) englishtownauction.com • Five Acres Flea Market (Belvidere) (908) 475-2572 New Mexico • Santa Fe Flea Saturday and Sunday, Friday during special events Railyard in El Museo santafetraditionalflea.com More New Mexico Flea Markets New Hampshire • Mid-Week Antiques Show August 8 and 9 Douglas N. The home contained all of its original contents, as well as a few creative modifications. Serena describes rooms built from old doors and a porch constructed out of bed springs. Before long, Serena started scouring other neighbors’ farms. She and a friend traded new merchandise for the neighbors’ so-called junk, and eventually had far more than they could use. They decided to hold a barn sale in 2002, and the Farm Chicks Antiques Show was born. Today, the oft-lauded Farm Chicks Antiques Show has more than 200 sellers, and shoppers flock to the Washington state event from all over the world. The Farm Chicks Antiques Show takes place on the first Saturday and Sunday of each June at the Spokane County Fairgrounds. Serena describes it as “primarily an antiques show with a tiny bit of handcrafted items mixed in for fun and added style.” thefarmchicks.com Wyoming • Teton Village Art & Antique Show July 13 through 15 Teton Village in Jackson Hole web.me.com/cbrooks13/MC_Presents/Calendar.html More Wyoming Flea Markets • Bart’s Flea Market (Laramie) bartsfleamarket.com • St. John's Episcopal Church Art & Antique Show (Jackson Hole) web.me.com/cbrooks13/MC_Presents/Calendar.html • Teton Village Art & Antique Show (Jackson Hole) web.me.com/cbrooks13/MC_Presents/Calendar.html FLEA MARKET DÉCOR 2012 99 PHOTOS COURTESY FARM CHICKS/CHRISTINA G.
