Tennessee River Museum From dinosaurs to the TVA, history in the lower Tennessee River Valley is both unique and fascinating! Its story awaits your discovery at Hardin County’s “Tennessee River Museum”. Here, exhibits chronicle prehistoric times, life of the Mississippian mound builders, the tragic story of the Trail of Tears, the Civil War on the River, the Golden Age of Steamboats, and the Tennessee River today. Among the many exhibits and objects displayed is the famed Shiloh Effigy Pipe, found at the Shiloh Indian Mounds Site in 1898. Unhurried... Shiloh National Military Park Shiloh National Military Park was established in 1894 to preserve the scene of the first major battle in the Western theater of the Civil War. The two-day battle, April 6th & 7th of 1862, involved about 65,000 Union and 44,000 Confederate troops. The battlefield contains about 4,000 acres at Shiloh and an interpretive center at Corinth, Mississippi. The park has within its boundaries the Shiloh National Cemetery along with the well preserved prehistoric Indian mounds that are listed as a historic landmark. The Shiloh battlefield is located in Hardin County, Tennessee, on the west bank of the Tennessee River nine miles southwest of Savannah, Tennessee, with an additional park unit located in the city of Corinth, Mississippi, twenty-three miles southwest of Shiloh. The park is open daily and rangers provide talks, tours, and demonstrations to provide a more in depth understanding of the battle and its place in American history. Shiloh Indian Mounds - National Historic Landmark About 800 years ago, a town occupied the high Tennessee River Bluff at the eastern edge of the Shiloh Plateau. Archaeologists refer to the society centered at Shiloh as a ‘chiefdom’. On a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River, six platform mounds surrounded by over three dozen individual house mounds and encircling palisade make up the finest surviving Mississippian Mound builder village in the Tennessee Valley. Shiloh is one of the very few places in the eastern United States where remains of prehistoric houses are still visible on the ground’s surface. This prehistoric culture, which reached the height of its influence around 1200 AD, is today interpreted at the Tennessee River Museum. Pickwick Landing State Park-where paradise begins...
