W
e’ve done it again! You are reading the second best magazine for
50+ readers in America as judged by the national Mature Market
Media Awards 2009 competition. The MMMA award, in its 19th
year, annually receives 1,500-2000 entries in all categories. Retirement Lifestyles competes with magazines of all sizes and we
were a little disappointed to be edged out of first place by AARP: The Magazine.
Somehow, we don’t think out bank account competes with AARP and their
magazine. So, we were pleased to receive three total awards in the general Magazine
category by also receiving two honorable mentions for other issues. This was more
awards than any other 50+ magazine. We’ve won top awards in the magazine
category in past years, but got skunked in 2008. It feels good to be on top again!
Kudos to our small, but dedicated and talented staff for working hard to
produce the best possible magazine for our readers.
Our organization has been instrumental in hosting nine consecutive National
Active Retirement Association (NARA) Conferences. Note that the 2009 10th
Annual NARA Conference will be in downtown Charlotte, NC Sept. 23-25 at
the Levine Museum of the New South. A great awards reception will be held at
Charlotte’s prestigious luxury Rosewood Condos (www.rosewoodcondos.com).

Hardins Find Paradise in Hardin
Co., Tennessee
Jane and Dan Hardin
at the Republican
National Convention
J
ane Hardin, a former big city corporate securities
and banking executive, is having the time of her life
in “retirement” near the banks of Pickwick Lake in
the small unincorporated town of Counce, TN.
Having spent much of her life as a rising executive
in the world of finance and big business in Memphis and
Nashville, Jane, 64, is excited about doing all the things she’s
always wanted to do, but never seemed to have time.
Like “putting up” strawberry jam or playing golf one day
a week or puttering around on the lake watching a sunset
in her pontoon party barge with her husband Dan, 63, and
friends. “All my Memphis friends asked me, ‘what are you
going to do?’ when I told them I was moving to the lake. But
now, I stay busy all of the time,” Jane said.
Jane and Dan still find time to travel two weeks a month
in a motorhome to destinations 600-700 miles from home
base. They are technically retired – Dan sold his shutter
company in 1989 and then built houses for another seven
years. However, it doesn’t sound like it.
Jane still puts in time at a part-time bank job at the –
ironically enough – Hardin County Bank. She loves how
everybody speaks and
every is looking to
help out. Doctors offer
almost
immediate
appointments if you
know you’re ill, she
said.
Pharmacists
actually inquire about
your health…and are
sincerely curious. “It’s just such a different laid back lifestyle
than Memphis,” she said.
And, the Hardin’s are cognizant that their nest egg is
going much further. While she owns the boat, motorhome
and nice home in a gated golfing community, her property
tax bill is about $150 a year.
Pickwick is their dream retirement spot, but the
Hardins are talking about taking their motorhome on a two
year North American adverture. Then, they’ll come back
into “retirement” at Pickwick Lake.
You know. One of those nice and quiet retirements?
Sure they will.

Meadowbrook
Blends Golf,
Homes and
History
S
ometimes a development
means much more than just
dirt and real estate…it means
memories, history and traditions. This is true for the
Deck family, developers of the Carolina
Hills at Meadowbrook master planned
community in Rutherfordton.
The Deck family traces its roots to
Western North Carolina from Germany
through Virginia. A branch of the
Deck family settled on the current
development site in 1904 as a working
farm with crops and livestock. The
original settlers, William Henry “Will”
Deck and Della Jane Smith Deck and
their 10 children worked the farm.
In 1963, two of the brothers,
Carson and Kenneth, converted the
family farm into a public golf course
called Meadowbrook Golf Club. The
course has become the proving ground
for many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of Will and Della Jane
Deck. From this legacy have come
three PGA Golf Professionals, one Turf
Grass degreed professional, four college
team golfers, and a summer program
for young golfers.
Today, decendents of the original
settlers continue to live and work in the
area and are developing the golf course
into a new active adult golf community.
William Deck, an officer in the
development, has always dreamed
of sharing the golf course with more
people. “I envisioned a friendly, well
conditioned golf course with a nice
community where people can enjoy
the many activities such as walking,
swimming, and biking.
Thirtyfive years ago, I was at another golf
community and thought, Why can’t we
do this? Why not have a lifestyle that
you would enjoy at a resort but in your
own backyard year around?”
“That’s the dream...and the legacy.”
