Ronald McDonald House at Stanford

Summer 2008
essamine is a nine year-old battling an aggressive cancer. It was just over a year
ago when she began complaining of stomach aches and side pain, which her
pediatrician passed off as growing pains and anxiety. It
wasn’t until her mother, Deanna, sought a second opinion
and insisted on an ultrasound that Jessy was diagnosed with
neuroblastoma. Within four days she had arrived at Stanford
and before a year had passed, her doctors had exhausted all
the normal courses of treatment for her cancer. They moved
on to experimental options, such as sending liquid radiation
through her entire body in conjunction with chemotherapy.
She can receive up to two rounds of this treatment but must
wait 52 days after each cycle before being scanned again
for the presence of cancer cells. In July, she completed her
second round of treatment and now waits in hope to hear
that she has beaten it this time.

CLIK (Computer Learning for Ill Kids) room. Deanna mentions that the kids
love the people here, especially the staff. For a family that has been around so long,
and seen many other families come and go, a little bit of
consistency makes a big difference. “Everybody knows
us,” she says with assurance. That stability should help
reassure Deanna come Fall. As a second grade teacher, she
will need to return to the classroom when school starts to
continue working and help keep up the family’s medical
insurance. Though Grandpa Don and Grandma Joanne
will come stay with Jessy and take care of her, leaving
behind a sick child can’t be an easy option for any parent.
But, as often is the case with the families staying at the
House, the financial and logistical demands of caring for
a critically ill child sometimes force a family to make hard
decisions and sacrifices.
“Home”
Schooling
for
Jessy
Since the beginning, this has been an unexpected journey
for the family. In a matter of days, Deanna, Jessy
and little brother Chase were asked to uproot the
life they knew in Crescent City, and leave behind
dad, Wade. The sudden departure postponed
Deanna and Wade’s wedding which was
originally planned for the weekend
after they arrived. They’ve even
welcomed the newest addition
to their family, Blake, while
staying at the House.
When you look around the House, you can’t always tell how
serious the battles are that some of these families are facing.
Jessy, Deanna, Chase and Blake are a cheerful bunch;
they laugh, play and fight like a normal family.
But they are facing the unknown in a
way most of us cannot imagine. For
families like Jessy’s, the House has
been, and will be, there for them
every step of the way.
What’s Inside
“We call it home. It’s where
we live,” Deanna affirms.
Jessy, who is home-schooled
by her mom while at the
House, says school is what
she misses most about
being home. But,
she stays in contact
with her friends back
home by chatting via
e-mail in the House’s

Special Events with Special Friends
The Friend Family visits the House a
couple times of year on holidays, hauling their
massive BBQ grill all the way from Visalia to
prepare the most fantastic BBQs. They make
the families feel extra special on days of the
year when most people prefer to stay at home,
making the House truly more like home.
The National Charity League
make birthdays fun by providing a monthly
dinner to help the kids celebrate while away
from home. This group of moms and
daughters also helps with holiday decorations,
bringing a little excitement to the kids at a time
that’s difficult to be away from loved ones.

Executive Director’s Column
The House tries to provide many “back to school” necessities for the
resident kids—it’s one less thing for the parents to worry about. There are often
many school-age children, both patients and siblings, at the House and there are
many supplies they need. As with so much of what is provided to House families,
these materials are mostly donated. We receive a variety of materials, from pencils
to folders to new clothes. This year the House was lucky enough to receive a grant
to give House teens each a laptop of their own. Another item the House is seeking
for the kids is wheeled backpacks. At a recent speaking engagement at Woodside
School, one of our staff was charmed by the kindergartners who filed into the
auditorium one-by-one, with their wheeled backpacks trailing behind them. For
some of the more seriously ill children at the House carrying a backpack can be
challenging and this is a helpful solution.
“Back to School” is a remarkable little phrase that, in a single
instant, transports one to a happily frenetic time of year, busy
with to-do lists, shopping, sack lunches, carpool arrangements,
and new studies. It can be an exciting time as the young student gears up in anticipation of a new year, the friends he will
meet and ideas he will learn. And it can be a bittersweet time for parents as their
children’s more structured schedules are restored, and the relaxed, seemingly endless days of summer come to a close. For the families at Ronald McDonald House,
“back to school” is no different.
After the heat and rush of summer, the return to school is like a welcome return
to normalcy. At the House, a sense of routine is often a very important part of coping with the chaotic and challenging times in which our families find themselves.
Keeping up healthy, productive activities gives the families a sense that, despite
what they are going through, some things remain the same. As in any family,
some of the kids welcome the beginning of the school year and some have trepidation. But they all get excited!
There are a multitude of ways the House helps its families—alleviating stress,
boosting morale and providing basic necessities, all of which are so very important
during such an exciting time like “back to school.” As always, it demonstrates
how much our House really is like home.

Mega thanks and kudos to the Randy Cross
Invitational Committee co-chairs, Gregg
Davis, Derrick Diaz, Con Freeman, Karen
Hirtzel, Bob Selig, Hilary Somers, and Julie
Van Gorder for their leadership in staging
the 24th annual Randy Cross Invitational
Golf and Tennis Tournament. Net
proceeds of $380,000 were realized and an
incredible landmark reached: a phenomenal
$5 million has been raised from the
tournament over the 24 years that Randy
and his family have been hosting this event
to benefit the House. To put that number
in perspective, the tournament has paid for
over 3,000 room nights at the House every
year for the past 24 years. Thank you
Randy, Patrice and the entire Cross family
for consistently making a difference in the
lives of so many.
The event was blessed with beautiful
weather as over 300 participants played
tennis and golf on June 8th and 9th.
For the second straight year, the tennis
tournament was won by John Saviano’s
team, captained by John Togasaki. Eric
and Lee Brandenburg’s team took the golf
honors at Stanford Golf Course with a
score of 57 while Kevin Vanderbeek and
24
Mike Ramseyer’s team captured the
Sharon Heights title with a 57 as well.

Eric Brandenburg and Brendan and
Randy Cross enjoy the reception
A cocktail reception and awards ceremony,
held at Ronald McDonald House, took
place Monday evening following the rounds
of golf. Guests gathered to dine on fine
hors d’oeuvres provided by Il Fornaio, Left
Bank, Milagros, Nola and Town. Southwest
Airlines staff cooked a barbeque for the
House families during the festivities.
The evening culminated with the selection
of the winning tickets for the drawing.
House kids gathered around the raffle
barrel and took turns picking the winning
tickets. Lucky winners received great
travel packages compliments of American
Airlines, Randy Cross and The Morgans
Hotel Group. Chief Anesthesiologist at
Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Dr.
Anita Honkanen, was the grand prize
winner of a 2008 Maserati Quatroporte
(see her photo with the car on page 3 of
this newsletter).
A great time for all and a landmark for
the House! The Randy Cross Invitational
continues to deliver aces and eagles for the
children and families.

Great Food!

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford relies
on a multitude of resources for support:
volunteers who provide their time, donors
who fund the operation of the House,
and advocates who spread awareness
and increase the House’s visibility in the
community. The House has been lucky to
find a little bit of all of this in Robert and
Susan Kresek. Bob serves on the House’s
Board of Directors, he and Susan are
annual sponsors of Denim to Diamonds
and the Spring Lamb BBQ, have included
the House in their estate plans, and they
tell everyone they know about the House.
Here they answer a few questions about
their involvement with the House.
How did you first hear about Ronald
McDonald House?
Susan: I first became aware of the House
during a college internship at the children’s
hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.

Bob & Susan Kresek

As part of the training, I visited Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia, just a few years
after the very first Ronald McDonald
House opened to support that hospital.
What do find the most rewarding from
your involvement in the House?
Bob: There are so many rewarding
experiences – visiting the House and seeing the families is an amazing inspiration.
What appeals to you most about the
House’s mission?
Susan: That the entire family, including
siblings, is considered when dealing with
a child who is very ill.
What inspires you about the House?
Bob: Seeing how fortunate we are to
live in a community so willing to give
their time and dedication to those who
need assistance.
