With five seniors on the team, including Preseason First Team All-SAC selection Brooke Seaman, the Tornados look to continue building on last season’s success by becoming annual members of the SAC tournament. Middle Hitter Seaman, the 2008 SAC leader in hitting percentage (.340) and blocks per game (0.98), returns to defend her titles in one of the deepest positions on the Tornados roster. Her 2008 season goes down as one of the best in Brevard volleyball history as she placed third on the list in kill percentage in a season and second in total blocks in a season with 142. Seaman could break several BC career records this season, sitting in third in both total blocks and total kills behind Marquessa Chappell and Sandy Tabor. Over the summer, Seaman was a part of the USAAI team which traveled down to Argentina and has greatly improved both her serve and her all-around game. Sophomores Jordei Osby and Ashlie Morrison return for the Tornados in the middle as well. Osby played in all 31 matches as a freshman, finishing fifth on the team in kills and second on the team in total blocks. Osby started to breakout in her last six matches, averaging 3.5 kills per match and showed her defensive prowess on Nov. 8th against Columbia College where she recorded nine blocks in Brevard’s five set come-from-behind victory. Morrison played in 25 matches, finishing sixth on the team with 66 kills and recorded 24 blocks but showed flashes of brilliance in when she was on the court, recording a 13 kills on Oct. 21 against North Greenville and seven blocks on Nov. 8 against Columbia. At times in 2008, Coach Skeffington played all three middle hitters on the front row, showing off the versatility of the trio as they call all cover all three frontline positions. Outside Hitter Chelsey Trojan made an immediate impact in her junior season after transferring from Sacramento City College, displaying a great overall all-around game in finishing second on the team in kills and digs. Trojan recorded seven double-digit kill games and 16 double-digit dig games, including a 13 kill-17 dig performance in leading the Tornados to the first SAC win in school history against Mars Hill on Sept. 23rd. Trojan is joined by fellow seniors Megan Street and Christin Johnston on the outside as the trio comprises the most experienced group among the Tornados returners. Street played in 29 matches as a junior, recording two six-kill games, while Johnston played in 19 matches, with her best match coming on Nov. 11 in the regular season finale against North Greenville with four kills and three digs Junior Brooke Sturgill and sophomore Chelsea Larsen will both press for playing time behind the three seniors. Sturgill played in 10 matches in 2008, recording three kills, while having her best game against Columbia on Nov. 8th where she rallied the team with two service aces to start the comeback in the thrilling 3-2 win. Larsen finished third on the team with 173 kills as a freshman, providing a physical presence at the net, finishing with 32 total blocks. 5 2009 Season Preview (cont.) Libero Rebecca Schoonover returns to the libero position as a junior after finishing second in the conference and 98th in the NCAA in digs per game with 4.10. Schoonover led the team in digs with 455, playing in all 31 matches and was named team captain this season after showing leadership skills and all-around play with 23 assists and 16 service aces. The 5-0 athlete showed off her leaping ability in recording one total block on the season. Defensive Specialist Senior Cori Emory leads a trio of returning defensive specialists, providing consistency to the backline for Coach Skeffington as she finished fourth on the team with 194 digs. Emory played in all 31 matches and was second on the team with 28 service aces. Emory averaged 6.3 digs per match, leading the Tornados backliners and will be expected to provide leadership to sophomores Lindsay Rogers and Caroline Merrill. Rogers returns after a freshman season which saw her play in 30 matches as a defensive specialist and backup setter. She finished fifth on the team with 163 digs, behind Emory and was sixth on the team with 14 service aces. Rogers recorded five double-digit dig matches, with a season-high 18 coming against Carson-Newman on Sept. 16. Merrill joins her fellow sophomore on the backline after playing in 22 matches as a freshman, recording 35 digs, with two assists and five service aces. Newcomers Coach Skeffington welcomes four to the 2009-2010 freshman class this season as Bethany Stevenson, Jami Atkinson, Ashley Wilson and Sydney Yeomans, all join the Tornados team. Atkinson and Wilson will combine to provide depth to the Tornados front line, while Stevenson will step into the setter position vacated by BC career set assists record holder Jami Perry. Yeomans comes in to help with the backline as a defensive specialist.
