Summer Sports
Camp
Sports and Activity Camp will
be in full swing this summer for its
38th year! The Saint Francis Sports
and Activity Camp has been structured to provide each youngster,
ages 6 through 13, with a variety of
learning experiences. The goal is
to give group and individual instruction in a number of sports
while also teaching teamwork and
good sportsmanship. The staff of the
Sports and Activity Camp works
diligently to provide an active
learning environment while emphasizing the positive development of
each youngster’s self esteem. Session
dates are as follows:
Week 1: June 16-20
Week 2: June 23-27
Week 3: June 30- July 3
Week 4: July 7-11
Campers may sign up for any
number or combination of weeks.
For more information, call Linda
Dowling, ext. 475.
Join us for “A Knight in Paradise”
The 20th Annual Royal Lancer Auction is rapidly approaching and will be
held Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Palo Alto. This
dazzling event will include a silent and live auction, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails,
entertainment and a gourmet dinner. Dress for the evening is “island elegance.”
The proceeds from this event will benefit the Saint Francis Endowments.
Tickets for the Auction are on sale now. Every reservation made prior to
March 3rd will qualify for a special drawing for a stay at the beautiful Monterey
Plaza Hotel. Reservations can be made by returning your invitation response card
or by calling the Development Office at (650) 968-1213, ext. 261.
There is still time to make a gift to the Auction. Tickets for events, dinners,
services, collectibles, and vacation homes make great auction items. Put a creative
basket together that will entice a high bid. Cash for underwriting expenses is also a
great gift. Your donation is tax deductible and will benefit Saint Francis High
School. A gift donation form is included in this mailing.
The Auction will also be the setting for this year’s Grand Raffle where three
lucky winners will take home cash prizes of $5,000, $1,500 or $750. Every family
has received a book of tickets, so “take a chance” to help support Saint Francis
High School. You do not need to be present to win, and you may be the lucky
winner. Let’s make this a memorable evening and also help our school!
Annual Giving
If you have not yet returned your Annual Giving Pledge Card, please do so
at your earliest convenience. Remember, Saint Francis High School receives no
financial support from the government or the diocese. The school is dependent
on the support of our parents, alumni and benefactors to enhance programs and
facilities. We need all families to participate in this endeavor at whatever level
they possibly can. Make a tax-deductible gift to Saint Francis High School and
help our students!
Reminder: The President’s Club Dinner will be held on May 7, 2003.
Teen Driving Law Correction
The February Parent Newsletter included information regarding the teen
driving laws. These laws have since been updated and are provided below.
Here are the rules again:
• For a new driver’s first six months or until the driver turns 18, no passengers
younger than 20 are allowed unless a licensed driver age 25 or older is present.
Exceptions can be made for certain needs, such as taking younger siblings to
school when reasonable alternatives are inadequate.
• For a new driver’s first 12 months or until the driver turns 18, no driving
is permitted from midnight to 5 a.m., unless accompanied by a licensed driver
age 25 or older. Exceptions are permitted for school, employment, family and
medical needs when reasonable alternatives are inadequate.

Six-Week Progress Report
The six-week grading period for
Semester 2 ended Thursday, February 13, 2003. Progress reports were
sent on Thursday, February 20, 2003.
If you did not receive your student’s
report, please contact the Academic
Office. Please note that these grades
are progress grades only. A second
progress report will be sent to you after
the 12-week grading period.
If your student received a first
semester grade below “C-” in any
course needed for college admissions,
or if your student is in danger of
receiving a second semester grade
below “C-”, it would be wise to begin
researching various summer school
programs to remediate the grade. If
your student received a semester failing grade in any Saint Francis requirement, he/she must make up that
grade prior to returning in the fall.
Please refer to the notice in this
newsletter regarding the summer
school program offered at Saint
Francis High School.
Parent-Teacher
Conferences
The spring Parent-Teacher Conference will be held on Monday, March 3,
from 1:30 - 3:00 P.M. Teachers will be
stationed in Raskob Memorial Gym
and Malcolm Center. We will be following an “A3” schedule that day. As
always, this conference time is intended
for short discussions (5 minutes maximum) regarding your student’s
progress. If you need an extended
time to discuss your student’s grades,
please arrange to speak with the
teacher(s) at another time.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering,
and steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
Retreats
The final Senior Silent Directed Retreats are April 2-4 and April 14-16. These
retreats have been “sold out” for each date. Please remember our retreatants in your
prayers.
The Junior retreats for this year are completed.
The Parent Teen Retreat is Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30.
See the enclosed flier.
The final Sophomore Immersion retreats are March 6, 10 and 12. This year the
entire sophomore class has made this retreat with their Religious Studies New
Testament classes.
Immersion
There will be two summer immersion trips available through Saint Francis High
School and offered to our junior and senior students. The first trip, for juniors only,
is the annual Holy Cross Immersion. Saint Francis High School will host the
immersion to be held in downtown San Jose. Students from the other three Holy Cross
High Schools will be joining our Lancers from June 16-20, 2003, for a week of service
in and around downtown San Jose.
The second trip for graduating seniors and some juniors will be offered by Sister
Jodi and the Oakford Dominican Sisters. They will be conducting the second annual
summer bible camp in Coachella, California. Camp will be conducted during the
week of June 15-21 and June 22-28.
Campus Ministry representatives have been in junior classes to discuss these great
opportunities.
Liturgies
An all-school liturgy will be held March 20 to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph,
patron of the Brothers of Holy Cross. This is a special day for our community as we
recognize the dedication of our Brothers to families of Saint Francis High School.
Service
Service project due dates are coming up soon. All service verification forms need
to be completed according to the school guidelines in order for the service to be
considered complete. Senior service is due March 3. Junior verification is due April
8; Sophomore verification is due April 21; and Freshman verification, May 5.
Freshman students going to Agnews may pick up a map in Campus Ministry. There
are very few sign-up spaces left for Agnews on Sunday mornings. Students may need
to try Special Olympics or other schools or agencies that provide services to
developmentally disabled people. Students must call ahead to make an appointment to
work. No agency can provide work on short notice. Service information is available
on the school web site at www.sfhs.com/Campus Ministry Service.
Pastoral/Grief Counseling
The staff of Campus Ministry is available to parents and students who are dealing
with the difficult issues surrounding loss - whether that loss is because of death,
divorce, breakup of relationships, or any circumstance. The teenage years can be very
difficult. We have printed information about the process of grief. Please feel free to call
us with your requests or concerns.
Counseling Corner
Scholarships
Scheduling of Classes for 2003-2004
Seniors should continue to check the Counseling
Center daily as well as the Scholarship Binder for
upcoming scholarships. If you are the recipient of a
scholarship from a college or organization, please notify
your counselor immediately. We would like to recognize all our scholarship recipients at school and in the
graduation program.
During the months of February and March, counselors will meet
with current freshmen, sophomores and juniors to plan next year’s
classes. Students are asked to bring registration forms for parents to
review, sign and bring back to the counselor as soon as possible. Please
carefully review requirements for specific classes with your student in
the Academic Handbook. You will receive confirmation of classes for
next year from the Academic Office by the beginning of April.
College Freshman Placement Tests
An Evening Discussion on How to Prepare for
Collegiate Athletics
Seniors in high school who will be attending UC or
CSU campuses in the fall who do not meet the
established SAT test scores may be asked to take a
placement test in English, math or both. These tests are
a method used by public colleges in California to
determine appropriate course placement in the fall of
freshman year in college. If you need to take the ELM
(Entry Level Math) or EPT (English Placement Test)
for CSU or Subject A Exam for UC’s, you will be
personally notified by mail from specific campuses.
Financial Aid
All colleges and universities require students to
have filed financial aid forms by March 1. Failure to
do so generally means that a student and his or her
family will not be eligible for financial aid for the
2002-2003 school year. All financial aid forms as
well as Cal Grant forms are available in the Counseling
office.
Call or write the colleges your student has applied
to if you have specific questions regarding financial
aid filing deadlines.
SAT I and SAT II
The SATs will be offered on Saturday, May 3, at
Saint Francis and on June 7 off campus. Juniors should
plan on taking this test once in the spring and again
in the fall. Any freshmen or sophomores currently
enrolled in Biology X or Biology should consider
taking the Biology E/M SAT II in June. If you have
questions regarding this test, please contact your
student’s guidance counselor. Any junior student planning on applying to the UC system should also plan
to take three SAT II’s this spring. Colleges also
accept the ACT test as a substitute for the SAT I test.
All application forms are available online or you may go
to the websites: www.collegeboard.com or act.org to
register.
The Saint Francis Guidance and Counseling Office is hosting an
evening for parents and students to learn more about collegiate
athletics on March 25, 2003, at 7:00 P.M. in Malcolm Center. College
level coaches from Division I, II and III will address some of the
following topics: How do we, as parents, help our child navigate
through the recruiting process? How do I, as a student athlete, market
myself effectively for college athletic programs? What catches a
college coach’s attention? What is the difference between Division I,
Division II, Division III and the Community Colleges? How do I know
if I’m a top recruit or not? What do I need to do to meet academic
NCAA requirements?

Support $CRIP
Please be sure to read over the guidelines for the Dress
Code that can be found in the Saint Francis Student-Parent
Handbook. When choosing clothes for warmer weather, it is
important to note the very specific guidelines given to reflect
the “Christian and academic atmosphere of the school.” (p.37)
Much of what is labeled “fashionable” is not appropriate for
Saint Francis.
It is always recommended that a student stand in front of
the mirror at home and raise up a hand, put on a backpack,
or bend as you would at a locker, before leaving for school.
The inappropriateness of clothing could be determined
rather quickly and detention could be avoided by taking
this precaution before leaving home.
Encourage your student to bring in any “questionable”
article of clothing to the Dean’s Office to be checked for
Dress Code BEFORE it is worn to school.
With the school year more than half over, we would like
to thank those families who have supported the $CRIP
program. If you have not purchased any Saint Francis $CRIP
this year, it is still not too late. We carry a wide variety of stores
and restaurants to serve all of your needs (see enclosed flyer for
a complete list.) Many thanks to those who have already
enrolled with eSCRIP. Please remember you can sign up at
any time. So, you Safeway, Draegers and PW shoppers, sign up
today to continue your support of Saint Francis. Also encourage family, friends and neighbors to sign up. Call Aleeta or
Nancy if you need an enrollment form.
We are aware that many families have other $CRIP
obligations at various schools, clubs and parishes. Keep in
mind that every little bit helps, so consider purchasing some
of your $CRIP through Saint Francis. We may carry $CRIP
that you are unable to get elsewhere.
Remember $CRIP as Easter and graduation approach.
Use a restaurant $CRIP to treat Mom on Mother's Day. To
arrange to buy $CRIP or if you have questions call Aleeta
Sinclair (408) 736-4991 or Nancy Minton (650) 941-5243.
You can also send your order form to the Business Office or
call the $CRIP hotline at (650) 968-1213 (press ‘1’, then ext.
700).
Summer at Saint Francis Classes
offered June 16 - July 25
Saint Francis is proud to introduce Summer at Saint
Francis, a summer program offering a variety of fun and
creative academic classes for 6th - 12th graders. The curriculum provides summer courses for students seeking academic
enrichment or the opportunity to repeat a course for credit.
Classes for high school credit include algebra, geometry, biology,
chemistry, Spanish, English, history and religion. The enrichment courses include computer literacy and strength and
conditioning. In addition, our academic enrichment camps
prepare students for the year ahead. These courses focus on
Spanish preparation, SAT I and II preparation or the college
admissions process. Please refer to the brochure included in
this newsletter for specific course information and registration materials.
Summer at Saint Francis also includes academic and
fine and performing arts camps for middle school students,
and The Freshman Experience for newly enrolled freshmen.
These exciting programs give future Lancers the opportunity
to make friends and explore the campus.
Lancer Locker
If you haven’t been by Lancer Locker lately, be sure to
stop in and check out some great new items, perfect for gifts
of any kind. We have a great new “chromatic” ink t-shirt with
a fun, changing look. Our Lancer “basketball” tees will be on
sale this month along with many other items. We have a large
stock of the longer shorts in all sizes and colors, so get ready
for the warmer weather ahead. Don’t forget to show your
Lancer “spirit” at upcoming sporting events!!
A reminder... Lancer Locker is still looking for a new crew
for next year. Please call or stop by if interested! We’re open
on Tuesdays, 10:00-2:30 and Thursday lunches.

Parent Clubs
Dear Saint Francis Moms,
As Groundhog Day arrived, Moms and Sons had fun together at
the very successful Mother-Son Casino Night. We thank Janet Garcia,
Jeanette Loretz and their committee for the great evening filled with
great food, fun decorations, entertaining casino games and fabulous
prizes. Special thanks to Scot Morton and the Men’s Club for volunteering their time as dealers of Black Jack. What a great way to start
the month of February.
Lancer Locker has been a great way for all of us to get special Lancer
apparel or boys’ school shorts-it’s our own little store on campus. We
thank two industrious women who have been managing this huge
enterprise, Debbie Fuller and Lynn Chronis and their large group of
hard-working volunteers. From selling at football games in the Fall
and staffing the Tuesday and Thursday shifts at the Lancer Locker, to
attending Women’s Club meetings, they made it easy for us get our
shopping done and we appreciate their diligence.
Another very efficient group we want to thank is Kathy Schields,
Debbie Fuller and their volunteers who put together the monthly
mailing. We thank them for their effort to get the information to us
each month. Several other volunteers have very quietly gone about
their jobs and so we thank them for very efficiently getting the job
done: Marla Griesedieck for copying on a moment’s notice, Lynne
O’Rourke for coordinating cookbook sales, Barbara Naylor for providing
flower arrangements as needed, and Val Liberty for being our Auction
Liaison. And, we’re not finished yet. In fact, there are more events to
come. April kicks off with the traditional Complimentary Spring Dinner
that will again incorporate The Yellow Rose Volunteer Appreciation
Reception. Mr. Makely will acknowledge the many women volunteers
who serve Saint Francis High School and, as a special treat, Ms. Kim
Oden, one of our school counselors and varsity volleyball coach, will
be our featured speaker. We finish off the month of April with the
Honor and Installation Dinner. This wonderful evening honors our
Senior Moms and installs the new Women’s Club Board. It is a very
special night for all attending so watch for the invitation. In the last
newsletter we mentioned the presentation of the Christmas at our
House check to Kevin Makley during the January meeting, but it
should be noted that the amount of the check was $143,000.00, which
was $43,000.00 over what was anticipated! Once more, congratulations
to Katy Kelly, Suzanne Moshier and all the CAOH volunteers.

Dear Saint Francis Dads,
Our last Men’s Club meeting was held on
February 11th. We were delighted to have former
Stanford and NFL standout Garin Veris as our
speaker. He gave us an outstanding talk. I know
everyone enjoyed listening to him. Thank you to
Gary Martin for arranging Garin’s visit with us.
The next big event on our calendar is the
Lancer Auction. It is the school’s biggest fundraiser.
The date of this event is March 22nd. The committees have been working hard putting the auction
together. Aside from attending, I encourage you
to volunteer by securing auction items to donate or
helping with manpower. Contact Steve DeMaestri
if you can help.
On Sunday, February 2nd, the annual MotherSon social was held. This year it was Monte Carlo
night. Everyone who attended had a great time. I
want to thank all the Dads who volunteered to
deal that night. I know that the committee that
put on the event really appreciated the help.
Basketball and wrestling are winding down. I
want to thank all of you who had the “best seat in
the house” while working in the concession stand.
Your help is truly appreciated. A special thanks to
Dick Budelli, Don Bacci and Matt Gilbert for all
of the help scheduling the volunteers. Of course, I
would be remiss if I did not mention Gary Martin.
He has done a wonderful job running the concession
stands all year. Thank you Gary.
I hope to see you at the next meeting.

DISCUSSION
DEPARTMENTS SHARE THOUGHTS WITH PARENTS
Teen Parties
Patricia Tennant, Principal
As we look towards spring and the
conclusion of the school year, we also
anticipate the many celebrations that
accompany the onset of the spring season,
including the Junior Prom and Senior
Ball. For many students, celebrations
come in the form of parties. While we
want our students to enjoy their last
semester of school, we are always concerned for their safety and well-being.
The difference between joy and tragedy
is often just a wrong decision or a mistake
in judgment, such as driving home from
a party with a friend who has been
drinking alcohol. We are aggressively
promoting an alcohol and drug-free
culture at Saint Francis, but we need
the help of our entire community. All
of our parents now have a copy of the
“Family Guide for the Prevention of
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use”
prepared by the participating schools in
our Northern California Community of
Community of Concern
From “A Family’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Other Drug Use”
Dear Families,
Watching our children grow into young adults is meant to be one of
parenthood's great rewards. The teen years provide countless occasions for
pride, for joy, for fun, for sharing- for teens themselves, for the families that love
them, and for the schools and communities that nurture their progress.
But today our teens face risks and obstacles that can turn innocent dreams
for a happy life into waking nightmares, or worse. Fear, stress, violence,
depression, suicide- these are among the dark realities our young people
encounter in their daily lives. Many express feelings of helplessness and
hopelessness. Coping can be a real challenge, in more ways than one.
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are widely and readily available to young
people today. The statistics for alcohol alone are heartbreaking. With 11
million U.S. drinkers between the ages of 12 and 20, eight young people die in
alcohol-related car crashes every day.
Too many young people, when confronted with the temptation to drink,
smoke, or use other drugs, are unsure what to do. Despite displays of indifference
or even hostility, our teenagers need and want our guidance and support. The
fact is, teenagers whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of
alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are far less likely to use these substances.
This guide is intended as a tool for getting the conversation going. It
deserves to be widely and freely shared by families, schools and communities
everywhere. Read it. Think about it. Discuss it. Act on it. Always bearing in
mind, of course, that the ultimate goal of this effort- the lifelong happiness of
our sons and daughters- is the single greatest reward any parent could ever have.
Sincerely,
Families and Communities Together
Concern. Now is a wonderful time to
use the pamphlet as a vehicle for discussion with your student. The article
“A Parent’s Guide to Teenage Parties,”
published by the organization Students
Against Driving Drunk (S.A.D.D.), is
printed on the back of this letter and
can serve as an additional information
guide for you.
Teenage parties are the most common source of alcohol and drugs. Through
our student organization, Students
Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol (S.O.D.A.)
and SAFE HOMES, we have made
great strides in communicating the
importance of providing safe choices
and safe environments for our students.
However, unchaperoned parties continue to be a source of concern for us
and a danger to our students. Parents
who allow their children to hold parties
or to attend parties where no adults are
present are inviting trouble. Drug and
alcohol use can dominate an unchaperoned party, and small gatherings of
friends can turn into “major parties”
just by word of mouth. Parents who leave
their teens for the weekend may be
subjecting their children to significant
peer pressure to “have a party.” Even
the strongest, most confident teenagers
have difficulty saying no when faced
with pressure from their friends.
Perhaps this article on teenage
parties will allow you an opportunity to
talk to your children about parties and
alcohol. It may also give you a chance
to reassure your teen that it is never the
right choice to get in a car with a person
who has been drinking. As a Catholic
school community, we care about all
our students. Our prayer for them is that
they can safely enjoy all the proms and
graduation celebrations that they have
worked so hard to achieve.

P ARENT-TEEN RETREAT
A PARENT-TEEN RETREAT is a special
kind of retreat which brings together
parent-teen couples for a weekend.
Time is set aside for the
parent-teen couple to get
to know one another.
Activities include
prayer, liturgy, solitude, leisure,and
recreation.
If you have been looking for an
opportunity to spend some time with
your parent or teen, we invite you to
consider this once-in-alifetime chance to get
away and get to know
your loved one in a
deeper more satisfying manner.
March 29-30, 2003
Mount Alverno Center
Redwood City
Begins: Saturday at 9 a.m.
Ends: Sunday at 12 p.m.
Letter from student:
Letter from parent:
This retreat has been one of the
best weekends of my life. I
learned more about my [parent]
in two days than I’ve learned in
17 years! I learned that there is
always room to grow and improve a relationship. You can
never love anyone enough.
Everyone has problems with
their parents and nobody’s
relationship is without flaws.
This retreat gave me an opportunity to put all of the day-today distractions away and just
deal with my parent one on one
as a friend. I would highly
recommend this retreat to
anyone who asked.
If you want to establish a communication pattern that works, if you want to
hear what other teens have to say about the life and stresses they face each day then don’t miss the parent/teen retreat. I admit to being a little nervous about
attending this retreat, I’m not big on group sharing and my child certainly
wasn’t interested in talking about their life. We decided to go anyway. The
personal stories I shared were with my child and the group activities were fun
and easy. In 24 hours time I began to see that my relationship, of parent to
child, was beginning to shift into an equal respect for the thoughts and desires
that my child had that were completely separate from me. We learned how to
have a conversation where we each had a chance to really share our view and
then to discuss it - respecting each other’s opinion. We shared the strengths we
saw in each other and were able to acknowledge and appreciate those strengths.
Most importantly we took time out of our lives to be together, alone in a possibly scary setting with the goal of learning something about ourselves as a parent/
child team. In three years my child may not be living in my house. That is a
very short time. As a parent this retreat was the best 24 hours of parenting I’ve
spent, and I didn’t have to cook, mow the lawn, answer the phone or drive
anyone anyplace. It almost qualified as a vacation!
