Welcome to Flower City Brampton! On behalf of Council and Tourism
Brampton, I am proud to present our 2008/2009 Tourism Guide.
We take great pride in our beautiful city where heritage has been blended
to be a part of a vibrant, modern community. There is something for everyone
here: art, music, culture, nature, shopping, entertainment and sports.
Having been voted as the Best Blooming Community, I encourage you to take
our Self-Guided Tours through our beautiful parks, trails and driving routes
to see Brampton at its best. We have three different tours: Brampton’s Green
& Fall Colour; Lakes & Rivers; and Floral Self-Guided Tours. All of the tours
feature natural beauty right in the middle of one of the fastest-growing cities
in Canada.

People have been living in this general
area for centuries. Archaeological
evidence found within our borders
confirms that native peoples had
hunting camps and small villages
along the Credit and Humber river
valleys from about 8000 B.C.
European settlers began arriving in
Ontario by the early 1780s. But even
into thearly 1800s Brampton was still
wilderness, largely untouched by
settlement. To prepare for the even
tual influx, lands in Chinguacousy
and Gore Townships were surveyed in
1818. Surveyors described the region
as low, swampy and covered with
dense hardwood forest. Slowly land
was cleared, cabins built and fields
were ploughed for farming.

The historical heart of the modern
City of Brampton has always been
the intersection of Queen and Main
Streets, later known as the "four
corners". This urban focal point
has existed since the 1820s. Only
a handful of people lived in the
community at this time.

Another defining feature of the new
settlement was the Etobicoke Creek.
The creek played its part in Brampton's
development but because it was slow
moving and meandering, it could never
sustain large scale milling operations.
The Brampton settlement grew more
slowly as a result.
In the early 1820s, John Elliott settled
in the village. He and another settler
named William Lawson were staunch
members of the Primitive Methodist
movement and they established a
strong Methodist presence in the
area. Both were from Brampton,
Cumberland, England. In 1834, they
named the settlement Brampton in

honour of their English home. Elliott
also had village lots surveyed for sale
to help attract other settlers. John
Scott established the first industrial
venture with an ashery used to
produce potash.
By 1846, the village had two stores, a
tavern, tannery, cabinetmaker, two
blacksmiths and two tailors, and the
population had reached 150 people.
In 1853, Brampton was officially
incorporated as a village. The
population had grown to over
500 people. Several churches were
built, along with a grammar school,
distilleries, several stores and John
Haggert's agricultural implements
factory. The local economy was
growing and the village supported the
surrounding farms and rural hamlets.
The Grand Trunk Railway constructed
a rail line and a station in Brampton in
1856. In the mid-Victorian era, the
arrival of a railway line usually

triggered an economic boom and
Brampton was no different. By the
1860s the village was growing fast.
In 1867, Brampton was selected as
the Peel County seat. The County
Courthouse, Jail and other public
buildings were constructed. Kenneth
Chisholm built Alderlea, a massive estate in the heart of the Village. Large
homes were built near the Courthouse.
Extensive land holdings surrounding
the four corners were subdivided to
build houses for the many new arrivals.
Brampton was incorporated as a town
in 1873 and John Haggert was elected
the first Mayor.
A new industry was emerging in
Brampton by the mid-Victorian era.
In 1860, Edward Dale established a
flower nursery. Within a few short
years, Brampton became known as the
“Flowertown of Canada” and soon
Dale's Nursery was Brampton's largest
employer. By the turn of the century,
hundreds of acres of land were filled
with greenhouses growing prize

orchids, hybrid roses and many
other quality flowers. Most of these
flowers were grown for export around
the world.
The 20th century brought new
industries to the town, mostly
along the railway line, including
the Williams Shoe factory, the
Copeland-Chatterson Loose-Leaf
Binder company and the Hewetson
Shoe factory. Major banks established
branches on the four corners. In
1907, American industrialist Andrew
Carnegie established a library in the
downtown and the population reached
4,000 people by 1910.
Brampton's citizens endured two
world wars and the Great Depression
during the first half of the 20th
century. These major world events
did take their toll on the local
economy. Some factories closed
and the flower industry began a slow
but steady decline.
The City slowly transformed after the
Second World War. In the late 1940s
and 1950s, the automobile began to
change the landscape, as did rapid
urban growth in Toronto. New
subdivisions began to develop. In the
late 1950s, Bramalea was created and
touted as "Canada's first satellite city".
Bramalea was a planned community
built to accommodate 50,000 people
by integrating houses, shopping
centres, parks, commercial business
and industry.
In March 1948, Brampton endured a
devastating flood when the Etobicoke
Creek overflowed its banks. The
Etobicoke flooded repeatedly but the
1948 flood was considered the worst.
The town launched an ambitious
civil engineer project to straighten
and reroute the Etobicoke Creek.
Construction of a concrete diversion
channel began in June 1950. Premier
Leslie Frost officially opened it on
July 5, 1952.

In 1974, the Region of Peel was
created and Brampton became a
city. Large-scale and leading-edge
industries located in Brampton. In the
1980s and 1990s, large subdivisions
developed on lands formerly used for
farming. The culturally diverse and
vibrant City of today was emerging.
Brampton is now among the largest
urban centres in Canada with a
population of over 450,000 people.
The roots of Brampton's success
can be traced to its heritage. The
foundations were first laid almost
200 years ago when a group of
industrious people established a
small hamlet at the crossroads of
Queen and Main Streets.

1974 – City of Brampton created. Brampton
was formed from the amalgamation of
Chinguacousy Township, Toronto Gore
Township, the Town of Brampton, and part of
the Town of Mississauga. Other municipalities
formed in the Regional Municipality of Peel in
1974 include the City of Mississauga and the
Town of Caledon
1999 – Brampton celebrates its silver
anniversary as a City
2003 – Brampton celebrates its
Sesquicentennial year. The City of Brampton
purchases “Alderlea” from Branch 15 of the
Royal Canadian Legion
1929 – Great Depression begins
1936 – The Lorne Scots Militia Regiment forms
from an amalgamation of the Lorne Rifles and
the Peel Dufferin Regiment

¼ mile road course manipulating
13 corners comprised of fast sweepers,

WAR FLYING MUSEUM
The museum
exhibits a collection
of full-sized flying
replicas of First World
War fighter planes
and artifacts from the First World War.
Experience the thrill of seeing these
fighter planes in action at their popular
flying show in September. Talk to the
volunteers who build, maintain and fly
these “magnificent flying machines”,
and enjoy the museum’s collection.

3) HISTORIC BOVAIRD HOUSE
Built c.1840, Historic Bovaird House is an
excellent Canadian example of a Georgiantype brick farmhouse. The house is filled with
furnishings ranging from 1840 to 1910.
Throughout the year, many special events and
historic exhibits are held at Bovaird House.
The Carriage House Craft Shop provides a
wide variety of quality gift items and artwork
handmade by local artisans.

4) HUMBER NURSERIES
BUTTERFLY CONSERVATORY
A 4,500 square foot mesh-enclosed house has
been created with all the essential food plants for
butterflies. Floral baskets, potted annuals, perennials
20
and herbs are introduced throughout the summer to ensure a
constant source of nourishment.
The Butterfly Conservatory is home to 30 species of native
butterflies, plus the migrating Monarch. Not only is this an
attractive exhibit, the conservatory is also an informative and
educational one. See beautiful display gardens, as well as
free-flying native butterflies.

5) KOREA VETERANS’ NATIONAL WALL OF
REMEMBRANCE & ONTARIO FIELD
OF HONOUR
The Korea Veterans’ National Wall of Remembrance, a national
memorial, provides its visitors with a comprehensive list of all
military units who served during the Korean War, along with
516 bronze plaques commemorating those Canadians who gave
their lives in the war. Meadowvale Cemetery’s veteran section is
also home to the notable sculpture entitled “Conflict”.

Through archival material and first hand accounts of former
employees of the A.V. Roe Company in Malton, this exhibition
looks at Peel’s aircraft industry.
The Arctic Zoo
Arctic Zoo highlights the Lewis Sherman collection of
Inuit art recently donated to the Peel Heritage Complex and
revolves around themes of earth, water, sky and animals.
The exhibition also includes an interactive area with videos
and resources for visitors. The 2400 Kilometre Painting, a
partnership project with local students and Inuksuk High
School in Nunavut, will be funded by the Brampton and Area
Community Foundation and installed in the spring of 2008.

Chinguacousy means "Land of the Tall Pines." There you will
find a curling rink, volleyball courts, tennis courts, sports fields, a
picnic shelter and paddleboats, as well as a popular greenhouse,
chapel and botanical garden. Children are thrilled to see the
animals at the barn with its petting zoo and pony rides. There’s
also mini golf, a skateboard park, and children’s splash pool.
With the arrival of the first big snowfall, Chinguacousy Park
suddenly goes “downhill” when both young and the young-atheart take off to Mount Chinguacousy to experience the simple
joys of skiing, snowboarding, snowblading, tubing and tobogganing.
The new “Magic Carpet” safely and slowly takes you, skis or
tube and all, up the hill for your fun ride down. Didn’t bring
your skis with you? Don’t worry, rentals are available at the
ski chalet located at the bottom of the hill.

Eldorado Park has been a public recreational area since the
beginning of the 1900s. In the early years, the site featured an
amusement park with merry-go-round and Ferris wheel. After
1917, with the introduction of the Radial railway, and through the
1920s, the park became a very popular destination. To this day,
Eldorado Park remains a popular public recreational park.

Spend a lazy day at the beach, swimming, canoeing or fishing.
The dense forest surrounding the lake makes you feel like you're
hours away from the city and you're right in the middle of it! Take a

hike on more than eight kilometres of scenic nature trails. Look
for native bird and plant species, enjoy a quiet walk in the park,
or let the kids run and climb in the playground or splash in the
new water play area. Book a group campsite for your Scouting,
Guiding, or youth group. You can also reserve a private picnic site
for a company barbecue, family reunion, or group function. Ask
about the TRCA’s “Ultimate Picnic Packages”. There is ample
parking and washroom facilities are available.

Claireville Conservation Area is a large, relatively dense forested
retreat in the southeast corner of Brampton. Flowing through

this historic
conservation
area is the West
Humber River.
In the early 1800s
this river was
used to power the
McVean Grist Mill,
a saw mill run by bAlexander McVean who is believed to be the
first settler in Toronto-Gore. The mill no longer remains, as it was
destroyed by fire in 1850. But you can still see the remains of an
open canal flume.
Claireville Conservation Area contains some significant
heritage features for the City of Brampton. Claireville is a
passive Conservation Area, preserving local wildlife and
natural landscape.
This is an unsupervised conservation area with very limited
parking. Hiking trails are not clearly marked and there
are no interpretive signs. No washroom facilities are available.
Parking: To access the parking lot off Hwy. 7 (Queen St.),
take Claireville Conservation Rd. There is an additional parking
lot on the east side of Hwy. 50 south of The Gore Rd. and north
of Steeles Ave.
TRAILS
Brampton has three trail systems running north and south throughout the City. These pedestrian and cycling trails are a tranquil
and scenic feature of this large City. The trails also connect many of the City’s parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities.
Please respect our trails, keeping them clean for all those to enjoy. Remember to stoop and scoop when walking your pets and
do not litter.

Etobicoke Trail is named after the Etobicoke
Creek that parallels the trail along the route.
There are many wonderful spots on
this trail to stop and enjoy the sounds of

The trail follows a linear park system east
of Main St. just north of Steeles Ave. at the
Charles F. Watson & Family Gardens, north approximately
14.5 kilometres, near the northern limits of Brampton.
ETOBICOKE CREEK TRAIL (continued)
When traveling through the downtown, you will need to take
some sidewalks. The Centennial Park pathway connector bridge
will take you to Wellington St. (Note: Stairway access only here)
Follow Wellington St. W. to Chapel Street, turn north (right) to
Queen St. Cross Queen St. at the lights to Market Square Blvd.
Follow Market Square Blvd. north to Union St. Turn right on
Union St. to Church St. Turn right on Church St. and travel to
Ken Whillans Dr. on the north side of Church St. You will find the
pathway will continue from the northeast side of Church St. and
Ken Whillans Dr. There will be a slight jog right at Vodden St.,
where you will cross at the lights. From this point on you will
have smooth sailing along the pathway.
Parking is available at Loafer’s Lake Recreation Centre (30
Loafer’s Lake Ln.) and the Rosalea Parking Lot (Church St.,
east of Main St. N.).

You and your family will have a marvelous time at Professor's
Lake. Professor’s Lake itself is a luxurious, man-made, spring-fed
lake spanning 65 acres. It features well-groomed sandy beaches
and is used extensively for windsurfing, canoeing, sailing, paddle
boating, and fishing. Only non-motorized boats are allowed on
the water. Other lakeside pursuits include a waterslide, beach

Professor’s Lake Trail features a scenic walking, cycling and
inline-skating path that follows Brampton’s park system (see
the Trails section for further detail). Information signs are posted
at various points along the trail.
There’s always something going on at Professor’s Lake. The
Professor’s Lake Neighbourhood Recreational Advisory Committee
(PLNRAC), a volunteer group of residents, organizes the famous
annual summertime Professor’s Lake Beach Party. You’ll find the
Professor's Lake Recreation Centre on the south shore of the lake,
where many fun events take place.

Along the Etobicoke Creek you will find picturesque Loafer’s
Lake. A popular place for relaxing and taking photographs,
Loafer’s Lake is a great spot to start your walk along the
Etobicoke Trail. Loafer’s Lake Recreation Centre, just beside
the lake, offers parking and public washrooms.

RIVERS
Many rivers flow through Brampton, all heading south towards Lake Ontario. The Credit River and Etobicoke Creek flow
through the west side of Brampton with the Humber and West Humber rivers flowing through the east. Although the
Etobicoke Creek is not officially a river, it is mentioned here due to its significance in the development of Brampton, its
meaningful association with early European settlement, and its present environmental significance.
Brampton’s rivers were used as transportation routes thousands of years ago for Paleolithic peoples. Today we do not use
them to travel along, but they are a tremendous asset to the landscape of Brampton. Brampton’s trail system follows our
rivers, providing a wonderful environment for recreational activities such as running, walking, or just taking in the calming
sounds and scenery.
