PNR NOVEMBER EDITION
Principal’s Message ~ November is already here!!
The St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School Community has been very busy
with many wonderful activities for our students! All of our activities this year are
centred around the theme of our pastoral plan, “Exploring Paths of Joy”. Pope
Francis has been very clear in modeling a life of joy found within the Gospel. We
will build on his leadership in this regard.
Students experience joy participating in the many sports teams and clubs that are
up and running again this year. The energetic and enthusiastic atmosphere
around the school is possible because of our dedicated staff members that spend
many hours before and after school working with these groups. There is
something for everyone at d’Youville! We believe that student wellbeing and
success is greatly improved when they become interested and engaged in school
outside the classroom.
We are looking forward to National Anti-bullying week November 16th-22nd. During this week we will
celebrate and showcase the caring, compassionate and inclusive community that we strive so hard to
be. Throughout the year students will continue to engage in many activities that will promote prevention,
intervention and awareness of Physical, Verbal, Social and Electronic forms of Bullying. “The DPCDSB prohibits
bullying in all its forms as a serious offense against the dignity of persons created in the image of
God”. Bullying is not permitted anywhere at St. Marguerite d’Youville or during any school related
activities. We offer many supports at the school to help students who experience or witness unwanted
comments or behaviors. Students can speak to a guidance counselor, any teacher or office staff. We also have
an anonymous Safe Schools Online Reporting Link on our website where they can report these inappropriate
behaviours.
Semester one midterm report cards are distributed at the same time as this newsletter. Our hope is that you
use the midterm report as one of many ways for parents to continually review your child’s progress. We also
encourage you to make regular contact with teachers and guidance counselors.
Remember to visit our Website for more information about our school at http://www.dpcdsb.org/DYOUV/
and sign up to follow us on Twitter @dytweets.

Catholic Student of the Year
St. Marguerite d’Youville S.S. is proud to
announce that on Saturday, October 25th
2014, one of our students was presented
with the Catholic Student of the Year
Award at the annual Fr. Fogherty Awards
Dinner. Congratulations goes out to
Andrea Royce from the entire d’Y School
Community.

Exploring Paths of Joy
Our theme this year is Exploring Paths of Joy.
None of us has all the answers, but together we
are seeking and exploring. We all want joy.
Allow me to share what I am learning so far this
year.
One of our students in the Planning for
Independence program told me that the first
key to joy is love. These are wise words. Do
we know love in our lives? Do we know the
love of God? I think joy has something to do
with service as well. Our most joyful moments
are those times we are able to transcend self.
Misery comes when everyone is thinking of
themselves.
Recently I saw a man in the rain directing traffic
outside a hospital. I have never seen so much
life and joy in a soul in a long time. I am
realizing that joy has nothing to do with how
rich you are. It has a lot to do with our
attitude, even in the rain. There is joy in being.
It is so simple. Life is a blessing. I saw written
on a bench recently, “Every day we wake up is
a blessing.
We should take nothing for
granted.”
Grade 9 Retreat
On September 25th all
Grade 9 d’Youville students travelled to the
Brampton Soccer Centre to spend the day in
community, nurturing
their relationship with
God. The day began
with students reconnecting with their orientation Link Leaders
through team building
activities. One of these
activities
included
body surfing, in which
students carried each
other as one body.
Through this activity
and others, students
learned the importance
of working together instead of in competition - to reach a common goal. Following
group activities, students were engaged by
inspirational speaker,
Alvin Law: Alvin was
Joy is in community. On October 15th we
brought together all of these aspects of joy. We
celebrated our saint by raising money for
Sharelife (www.sharlife.org). We came together
as a community around a cause larger than
ourselves. We celebrated the love of God who
gives himself to us in the Eucharist. We
celebrated with food, music, and sports – three
of the many awesome things we enjoy in this
life. Many thanks to the parents and knights
who helped with the cooking!
We have only just begun to explore the theme
of Joy. We still have so much to learn. I
would like to end with a quote from Pope
Francis exhortation called The Joy of the Gospel:
“Nobody can go off to battle unless he is fully
convinced of victory beforehand. If we start
without confidence, we have already lost half
the battle and we bury our talents. While
painfully aware of our own frailties, we have to
march on without giving in... Let us recover and
deepen our enthusiasm, that delightful and
comforting joy of evangelizing, even when it is
in tears that we must sow."
T. Whelan
born without arms and
has faced many challenges in life as a result.
He learned to adapt to
his environment and
leads a very full life
travelling and sharing
his unique story. Students built on their
relationships with each
other and God.
Through the activities,
a community lunch,
and a reflective prayer
liturgy, students truly
came together as one
body. Thank you to
the Link Leaders for the
connections you made
and for being such excellent role models for
the Grade 9 students.

Cadbury Business Trip
On Tuesday, October 21st, 2014
the grade 11 Marketing and grade
12 Business Management class had
the opportunity to tour the
Cadbury factory in downtown
Toronto. Students sampled
chocolate products and earned a
certificate in Cadbury Chocology.
Cadbury employees taught
d’Youville students about the
manufacturing process, and the
science behind making a Cadbury
chocolate bar. Students were able
to hold an actual chocolate bean.
Students got to see first-hand how
the Cadbury Dairymilk chocolate
bar is produced. Business students
were able to see the President’s
office, and his secret wall
compartment. We learned some
fun facts such as the Cadbury mini
eggs have a chocolate centre, and
a 60 layer candy coating.
Students toured the Cadbury
museum, factory and retail store.
Students were able to purchase
Cadbury chocolate products at a
discounted price.
We learned
about
past Marketing
promotional strategies conducted
Page 5 of
by CADBURY. Students and
teachers were impressed with the
Caramilk Golden key promotion.
The winner of this promotion
received $250,000! If you want
to hear more information about
it, please ask a Business student!!!!
We did not find out the answer
to the historic question, “How do
they get the Caramel inside the
Caramilk bar? but maybe we will
have better luck next semester!!!!

A.C.C.E.S.S.
Presenting d’Youville’s A.C.C.E.S.S. program!
A.C.C.E.S.S. stands for Alternative Caring Community
Empowering Student Success.
A.C.C.E.S.S. is a
program developed for students that for a variety of
reasons, require an alternative learning environment.
A.C.C.E.S.S includes cross-curricular programming,
credit recovery, credit acquisition, experiential
learning and much more!
From apple and pumpkin picking for our Healthy
Eating Unit, to zip lining at Heartlake to staying
healthy and active, our students have been hard at
work this fall! Our focus for September and October
was to build community and work on making our
class an unstoppable team. While working on their
core courses and recovery of credits, we have also
made time for some fun-filled projects. Students
have already begun to hone in on their craft skills by
creating dream catchers as part of their Expressing
Aboriginal Cultures course. We are reading a four
part graphic novel series that educates students on
First Nations culture while also addressing their
history and traditions. The Dream Catcher is only
the first of many projects they will create this year.
We have also continued our study of literature by
exploring the Maze Theory. After focusing on
various types of mazes and literary analysis of the
maze theory through short stories, we went to Laser
Quest with Mr. Yan and Ms. Martin’s grade 9
students.
We are currently embarking on our
hospitality unit where we will be working closely
with Ms. Monticciolo’s class in learning some very
important cooking skills. We are currently preparing
for our retreat which is to feed the homeless in
downtown Toronto. Our students will be learning
about poverty in Canada and more specifically
within the GTA, while truly living out Catholic values

On October 23rd, a group of 25 English as a Second
Language students visited Black Creek Pioneer Village
and York University. For three hours they lived like
Canadian Pioneers from 200 years ago. First, they
worked in a pioneer workshop making everything
from spoons to sweaters. Then, it was off to the
pioneer kitchen to prepare soup, corn-bread, and
cookies.
After eating this delicious food, they
explored other parts of village life: the doctor’s
office, the blacksmith, the mill, and the church.
The day then changed from looking at the past to
looking at the future. They toured York University
and spent time observing university life. Many of
the students said that seeing university life first hand
has inspired them. Overall, the day gave them an
interesting hands-on look at Ontario’s past, and a
view of University life to motivate them to be part
of Ontario’s future.

Grade 9 English Trip to
Laserquest Brampton
On October 22nd, Ms. Costa’s and Ms.
Brum’s ACCESS students, along with
Mr. Yan’s and Ms. Martin’s Grade 9
English classes invaded the Brampton
Laserquest site to enhance their learning
of the major archetype/pattern in
English literature, namely the maze.
After reading about the maze setting in
literature (the labyrinth in Theseus and
Minotaur; and the forest in Hansel and
Gretel) and the way out (the ball of
string and the trail of pebbles), the
student entered the living maze of
Laserquest, adopting character names
and tagging each other. They also
watched an educational video on the
history of mazes and the science of
lasers.
“...students learned a
little about media
studies and
discovered the role
of “violence” in art.
Just as important, the students learned
a little about media studies and
discovered the role of “violence” in art.
While we shoot or tag each other in art
(including video games, film and
literature), the role of the imagination is
to keep those exciting actions in the
imagination and to not let them enter
real life.
Overall it was a great day of learning
and bonding with the class. By the way,
the overall winner was Tyler Francis.
Special thank you to Vice Principal
Chambers in the main office for making
the trip possible and affordable for all
the students.

Experiential Learning
A new semester of Co-op has
begun and students have
been working hard at their
placements. The experiences
that the students will gain
over this semester will prove
to be valuable for their future
educational choices and
careers. They are showing
great commitment and
developing their work skills
daily.
Through Co-operative
Education, students combine
classroom theory with
experience in the workplace.
Some of the careers the
students are presently
engaged are in the following
fields: nursing, teaching, early
childhood educator, policing,
computer technician,
hairstyling, make-up artistry,
athletic therapy, lawyer,
baker, fitness/personal
training, culinary arts,
carpenter, electrician,

ACADEMIC RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
This 2014-2015 school year has welcomed changes in the Academic Resource
Department. Staff and students have been engaged in new and exciting
experiences while also learning new skills.
This has helped us build a community of learners and has kept us very busy. We welcome Mr. Snihura and Ms.
Gregori in the Planning for Independence Program, Ms. Steinhofer as a Grade 9 GLE teacher, and Ms. Walter, the
new CYW for the Diploma Support program this semester as the newest members of our A.R.D. team!
The Planning for Independence class has experienced nature a lot this semester thanks to the outdoor expertise
Mr.Snihura brings to the program. Luckily, they have been able to take advantage of the warmer weather this fall.
They have hiked at Silver Creek, and enjoyed fall activities at both Heartlake Conservation area, and Downey’s
Farm. They also walked to the local park and ventured to Loafer’s Lake to work out on the outdoor circuit
training stations. The class was part of a Bocce tournament in September and enjoyed some rounds of bowling in
October. The PIP students have also done a lot of reflection and art this year. They are currently creating a
beautiful mural celebrating the Joy of Nature! The most cherished time involves PIP staff, and students taking
public transit to St. Marguerite d’Youville Church to celebrate mass on a weekly basis. The Planning for
Independence program stresses the importance of spiritual development in everyday life. It brings us all closer as a
Catholic family of learners.
The Resource Room continues to be accessed every period to assist students with tests and assignments. On
November 4th, students writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (O.S.S.L.T.) using assistive technology,
had the opportunity to be trained on a new reading program called Texthelp- Read
& Write to practice the test. They were also provided with useful strategies about
timing, structure, and anxiety reducing techniques in order to write with more
confidence.
The Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) for all A.R.D. students were sent out the week
of October 15th, 2014. Signed forms should have been returned to the respective
Special Education Resource Teacher (S.E.R.T.) by the end of October. Please contact
Mrs. L. Pincente (ext. 79138) if you have any questions.
We wish all our students continued success this semester and encourage them to visit
us in the Resource Room or speak to their S.E.R.T. if they have any concerns. Good
luck to everyone in the upcoming months and continue to work hard!

curriculum and community climate. We are reminded
of God’s call to experience true happiness and the
deepest of joy in living out the Beatitudes as
described in the Sermon on the Mount.
This semester, we are pleased to welcome Ms.
Abbatangelo, Mr. Denyszyn, Mr. Finaldi, Ms.
Kresnik, Mr. Randell, Mr. Schiavello, and Ms. Vecchi

MATH DEPARTMENT
Free Math Tutoring
Students enrolled in grade 9 – 11 semester one mathematics courses can attend math help sessions in room 115
on all 3 lunches. Math help can also be found afterschool with the students’ specific teachers. Many thanks to
our dedicated teachers for providing this supportive environment for our students!
Grade 9 and 10 math students can also access FREE online tutoring offered by the Ministry of Education every
Sunday to Thursday from 5:30pm – 9:30pm. The students OEN number is required to register and is found on
the students’ timetable or report card. WEBSITE: http://homeworkhelp.ilc.org
Online Textbooks
A reminder that many of our courses have textbooks available online. Ask your teacher for more info. If students forget their textbooks at school they can still access their homework at home or at a library.
Mathematics Courses and Prerequisites
We highly recommend students entering grade 9 to enroll in the stream (Academic, Applied or Essential) that
their grade 8 teacher recommended to them. Students registering for the MCF3M1 (11 Mixed Math) course
next year are strongly recommended to have a minimum of 75% in the MFM2P1 (10 Applied) course. Students
registering for the MCT4C1 (College Math for Technology) course require the MCF3M1 course as a prerequisite. The MBF3C1 (11 College Math) course is NOT the proper prerequisite for MCT4C1.
Grade 9 EQAO MATH TEST
Our semester one grade 9 Applied and Academic students are preparing for the Math EQAO Test which will be
written at the school January 14th and 15th. This is a regular school day. The EQAO counts as part of the final
30% evaluation of these courses and therefore attendance on these test dates is critical. In addition to the
grade 9 Applied classes will complete a board created CPT. The Academic classes will write a final exam. Students have been provided with an EQAO preparation booklet and have been practicing throughout the semester. Sample Math EQAO questions may be found at www.EQAO.com. Note: the grade 9 Essential mathematics
students do not write the Math EQAO test.

LINK CREW
TRANSITION
PROGRAM
Link Crew is a transition program at d’Youville designed to help our new grade
9 students adjust to high school life. Link Crew is made up of a group of
dedicated Grade 11 and 12 students from diverse backgrounds in our d’Youville
community. Link Leaders are trained to act as positive role models and
mentors to steer grade 9’s in the right direction.
Link Leaders began this year by hosting the grade 9 orientation on August 27th. The goal was to
welcome grade 9’s to d’Youville, have them become familiar with each other and their
surroundings, as well as promote several messages about how to be successful in high school. Link
Leaders have continued to assist grade 9’s with transition by acting as guides during grade 9 retreats,
as well as through “Academic Follow Ups”. In “Academic Follow Ups”, Link Leaders visit grade 9
classes to discuss the importance of academics, offer advice and strategies in becoming a wellrounded student, and re-establish relationships with them.
In hopes to increase the commitment to the transition of our grade 8 students from our feeder
schools, we are hosting our 3rd annual “A Day in the Life” event, in which the grade 8 students come
to d’Y for the day on November 6th while the current grade 9s participate in Take your kid to work
day out of the school. Each grade 8 student will follow the schedule similar to a grade 9 student
with the guidance and support of our Link Leaders and grade 9 teachers throughout the day. They
will also get a glimpse into the specialty course offered at our school.
Link Crew is also looking forward to hosting Cocoa and Cram Study Session before January Exams
in order to help grade 9’s prepare for their upcoming exams.
Our Link Crew Leaders pledge to continue to be positive reinforcements in the d’Y community. We
look forward to the many events ahead of us this year.
Once again, we will be offering a Link Crew Course for grade 11 students next year! Current grade
10 students who are interested in being Link Leaders for the 2015-2016 school year must select
LEADRE on their registration and course selection form to be considered for an interview. Please see
any of the Link Crew Coordinators if you have any questions.

all other program specific requirements. Colleges will
look at 5-7 senior courses completed at the “C” level
or higher from grade 11 and 12.
Every college

www.ontariocolleges.ca to research admission
requirements.
Congratulations to all grade nine students who
participated in the Wednesday, November 5th “Take
Our KidsTo Work Day”! This day is a positive step
in providing our young students with a “first hand”
experience of some essential skills required for success
in the world of work.
Congratulations to our more than 350 award
recipients last year. Our annual Awards Night was
held on Thursday, October 23rd. This annual event
was a huge success and was very well attended. All
staff are very proud of the students, recognizing their
hard work and effort over the past year.
All students are reminded that 40 hrs. of
community service and a passing grade on the
grade 10 Ontario Literacy Test are compulsory
requirements in order to earn a secondary school
diploma.
When you have completed a minimum of 40 hours
service, please make an appointment with your
guidance counselor who will add them to your
school record. It is to your benefit to have these
hours completed by the end of grade eleven. You
are able to access community service tracking sheets
on our school website.
On behalf of the guidance department we
would like to wish all students a very successful
and rewarding semester

assignments. We continue to offer the d’Y community many services such as: book borrowing,

Come and see the library staff for recommendations.
If there is a book you would like to read that is not a part of our library’s collection, we would love
to hear from you. Please see a library staff member and we can put the title on the book request list
for the future, and hopefully we will be able to purchase it.

databases in a meaningful capacity!
White Pine 2015 has begun!
d’Youville staff and students are welcome to participate in the Ontario Library Association’s White
Pine Reading Program. Titles and summaries of this year’s nominees can be found on http://

You only need to read five of the ten nominated books to be eligible to participate in the April vote

author is awarded the White Pine Award at the Forest of Reading ceremony in May.
If you are interested in becoming a part of the White Pine Reading Program, please see Ms.

lives of today’s youth so that they can reach their full
potential for their community, city, and society at
large through positive high energy and initiative.

group. After the challenge was completed, and the
winners declared, students travelled to various
workshops throughout the school. The workshops
enabled teachers and senior students to reach out to

themselves at dance. Throughout the event, students
were encouraged to mature into even happier,
healthier, young women who treasure the Catholic
value of friendship. The grade 9 girls were reintroduced to the wide variety of resources, caring
adults and student leaders that will support them
throughout their high school journey. The evening

grade 9 students to form important bonds, build
character, and promote the core values of Christian
discipleship. It also provided the grade 9 students
with knowledge of the resources available to them at
d’Youville. The event would not have been a success
without the help of our Link Leaders who worked
with the grade 9’s throughout the evening. Thanks
to the teachers and support staff who volunteered
their time to lead the workshops and supervise the
events. A special thanks to Paul Johnson (visiting
CYW from St. Edmund Campion) for his amazing
workshop, and to Nicole Bailey (our new CYW) for
making such a positive impact on the students.

JUNIOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The Junior Boys Volleyball team have had an excellent start to the 2014 season. There are 4 returning players
which include captain Ukasha Khan, Josh Scarafile, Kawon Schobourgh, and Micheal Procopio. Grade 10 newcomers Kevin Dzisah, Nicholas Travalja and Tyrell Samuels have quickly become dominant hitting players.
Rounding out the team are the hard working grade 9’s who have adapted well, and have shown a lot of dedication to the team: Jarue Ramos, Nathaniel Flemming, Bipan Gill, Gabor Simon, and Martin Platek . Also appreciated is the help of managers Dzifa Afegenu, and Felicia Coretti for the second year in a row.
The Panthers have participated in 2 tournaments
where everyone played. They were successful by
making it to the semi-finals of the St. Joseph’s Junior Boys volleyball tournament and continue to
play well in league games. Coach Moynihan and
Del Duca are amazed at how successful the team
has been and have set high expectations for the
Panthers. The Panthers need a couple more key
wins to secure a spot in the playoffs. Good luck
boys!
