INDUSTRY Q&A:
Catherine Brewton,
VP Writer/Publisher
Relations, BMI
By Michael Nolan
In 1997 Catherine Brewton moved from a
dream job as Executive Director of the Recording
Academy (NARAS) to a truly plum trajectory: a
series of promotions at BMI where she is now
celebrating a decade as Vice President, Writer/
Publisher Relations. It’s a title that obscures
the myriad of aspects of her Atlanta-based
work, including the creation and production
of BMI’s many educational, networking and
showcase events. Beyond her many corporate
responsibilities, her work with the non-profit
Hope for Harvest will be acknowledged at the
GMA Honors ceremony held May 10 in Nashville.

GETTING

CATHERINE
BREWTON
AMONG THE FIRST
ALBUMS YOU BOUGHT:
Nick of Time, by Bonnie Raitt
FIRST CONCERT
ATTENDED:
John P. Key
MOST DREADED PHONE
CALL TO MAKE:
To tell someone I can’t
help them.
FAVORITE “WOW”
MOMENT IN CAREER:
Two really. Being included
in Ebony’s “Power 100” and
Billboard’s “Top 50 Women
in Music.”
SOMEONE YOU FELT
PARTICULARLY HONORED
TO MEET:
I could give you dozens—
but both these individuals
ignited something in me to
make a difference: Al Green
and Nile Rogers.
BEST WAY TO
DISCONNECT:
I turn my phones (yes, two)
off, and I spend a lot of
time in Florida. I recalibrate
to get back in it.
L-R: DJ Khaled, Rizza, Red-One, Catherine Brewton, Joel Madden, Rev Run, Benji Madden
What was your transition from NARAS to BMI like?
Catherine Brewton: At the time I didn’t know the writer community, but I knew
enough of the top tier [of the music community] that they could point me in the
right direction.
Seems like you’re a plate spinner with a lot of different kinds of plates.
Brewton: It’s so fast, what we do. You have to be someone who can function at the
drop of the dime in any capacity. It’s not for everybody. Those who do well at this job
are really good managers of relationships, because those relationships are so pivotal.
It’s daunting sometimes…You’re not only dealing with multiple genres of music, but
you’re dealing with a lot of successful people. When you’re dealing with hundreds of
people in that capacity, the days are long and sometimes you’re worn out. When I’m
coming off the production of a major event, my day-to-day job doesn’t stop.
You’ve praised your team. What are they like?
Brewton: I’ve got a lot of Type A-personalities, and that’s a blessing and a curse
because sometimes I don’t want to hear all of the chatter [laughs]. I’m open to
everyone’s opinion, and there is always really healthy dialogue. I don’t believe
in hiring down. I want people who can compete at the level that I compete, so I
appreciate the folks who work around me and for me.
What’s the current status of the Atlanta music scene?
Brewton: I think it’s rising again. The tax incentives that were implemented five years
ago and renewed for another five have created a whole new field of opportunity for
this community. The music is back to the core, and I think it’s fun again. There are
opportunities for folks to work on soundtracks, on reality TV shows… I think a lot
of people migrated West thinking that would be their saving grace, but 90 percent

are back in Atlanta. You almost
have to double your income to be
comfortable [in L.A.].
One of the highlights of the year is
the “Trailblazers of Gospel Music”
event. What sets it apart from
other award presentations?
Brewton: It’s a labor of love. It’s
pretty organic in the sense that it
was really just my effort to say, “Let’s
honor not what’s necessarily popular
[now], but let’s acknowledge the
body of work of some of those who
may not necessarily win a Stellar or a
Dove or whatever.” It really began to
take on a life of its own that wasn’t
really orchestrated. It kept growing
and becoming bigger, but it always
felt like our event.
You’ve said that one of the most
rewarding aspects of your work
is watching artists and writers
persist until they succeed.
Brewton: You talk about an artist
and say, “He’s so successful now,”
but truth be told the journey took
eight, nine, ten years and putting
in the work and staying the course.
When I look back over my career,
and I can share these stories, these
are some of the most incredible
moments I could ever, ever ask for.
Drawing on your background
in finance, what’s a weakness
common to creative types?
Brewton: I think creators are just
that—creators—and they’re not
good stewards when they start
making money, of how they need to
set it up, of knowing what resources
Hope For Harvest 2013
are available to them. They move
into success with people around
them who are not necessarily wellversed in the event that there’s ever
a rainy day or they’re not working
as much.
Although you’re a top-level
executive, you also seem to be
very much “in the trenches” of
your projects. Is that your nature?
Brewton: I will do whatever it takes
to get the job done. I’m not above
getting my hands dirty. I’ve tried to
be a beacon of light in a business
where everyone is so entitled. There
are so many demands made on you
and your time.
What are some things people may
not know about your work?
Brewton: I enjoy country music. I
work a lot in Nashville. I am often a
bridge builder in the sense that I am
not afraid to put people together
in circles where they may not
necessarily be comfortable. I make
things make sense to people where
they may not think it makes sense.
Talk about your involvement with
Hope for Harvest.
Brewton: The Harvest Center [in
Charlotte, N.C.] is a facility that my
mom, Pastor Barbara BrewtonCameron, started to help the
homeless and people in transition…
Hope for Harvest was started from
seeing the needs of young people
in Charlotte. So many wonderful
people have joined arms with me.
Dozens and dozens of artists have
donated their time to come and
support the initiative. We love on
these children that I think people,
as a rule, have written off. We make
sure they get the resources they
need, whether that’s food or socks
or shoes. We want to give those
who feel hopeless hope.
What’s a piece of advice you
frequently offer?
Brewton: If you have purpose, the
money will come.
