I am pleased to report 2012 has been a tremendous year of
growth and expansion, industry recognition and community
giving for Frank’s International.
With continual growth comes
the need for investment in human capital and infrastructure.
One area of tangible infrastructure investment was evident with
the grand opening of the new
Equipment Repair Service Center in Lafayette, Louisiana.
The Service Center is comprised of three reconstruction
departments under one roof: hoisting and handling equipment, power units, and power tongs. This state-of-the-art
facility has built-in staging areas to enhance productivity
and turnaround times in order to keep our equipment readily available to serve our customers’ requirements around
the world. Additional strategic plans for new infrastructure
and personnel around the world are currently in process.
Frank’s companywide quality standard improvement efforts
include initiatives at various Frank’s field locations around
the world. One recent example of these efforts is the ISO
9001:2008 certification earned by Frank’s Egypt this past May.
This effort required team coordination and commitment
from all of the personnel at the base. Thank you for your hard
work, and congratulations on a job well done.
I am proud to announce that Frank’s has once again been
recognized and awarded three individual first-place seals of
excellence by Energy Point Research for 2012. The Oilfield
Services Customer Satisfaction surveys listed Frank’s at the
top of the rankings for the categories of Gulf of Mexico, NonVertical Wells and Special Applications. These awards are a
testament to our dedicated employees and their exhaustive efforts to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations
— from our field personnel to our manufacturing units, our
safety department, quality assurance, our shop hands, our
engineers, our transportation and shipping departments,
our sales staff and our administrative personnel … it takes
a team of people working behind the scenes, as well as
the front-line personnel, to develop and effectively provide
Frank’s services, equipment and products.
During 2012, Frank’s continued its long tradition of giving
back to the community. In addition to supporting numerous charities through contributions and attending various
charitable events worldwide, Frank’s hosted its 29th Annual
Crawfish Boil in Houston during the Offshore Technology
Conference (OTC). This year’s event raised $50,000, and all
proceeds were again presented to Chuck Norris’ foundation,
KickStart for Kids.
Finally, I would like to congratulate two longtime business partners, who are close friends of mine, on their
upcoming retirements.
John Wheeler, our Chief Operating Officer and the person responsible for our operations in the FAME group, has
given 35 years of service to Frank’s. John’s contributions
have played a significant role in Frank’s success over the
years. I know that I speak on behalf of everyone at Frank’s
in wishing John and Darlene the best of luck during his
well-deserved retirement. I, personally, would like to thank
him for his many years of loyalty and dedication to Frank’s
International and a job well done!
Also, Capt. George Dodge, the founder, former owner and
current president of Western Airways, Inc., will be retiring after 38 years with Western Airways. Capt. Dodge has been a
friend for more than 40 years, and I am proud that he had
the confidence to sell to the Frank’s International family the
company he formed seven years ago. Since then, I have enjoyed working together in expanding Western’s fleet and operations. I wish Capt. Dodge all the best for his well-deserved
retirement, too.

recognition and community giving, I look forward to
meeting and exceeding these achievements in the upcoming years as we celebrate our 75th year in order to

Safety: Project Zero
The value of being safe is freedom from danger, risk or injury. In an effort to achieve
that value of safety, Frank’s developed Project Zero, a safety-management system
committed to zero injuries and incidents.
In the oil and gas industry, the risk of injury is ever-present, and a goal
of zero may seem unrealistic. Cliff Roberts, Frank’s corporate safety
director, said, “As a company, are we going to commit to a goal of 10,
20 or 30 injuries a year? Of course not! Frank’s goal is zero, and, on any
given day, Frank’s, with over 3,500 employees working on six continents, has not one but several days where we have zero injuries. Do
we go a year with zero incidents? Not yet, but we are getting there
one day at a time.”
Project Zero involves more than the safety department; it
includes operations as an integral part as well. To achieve zero
harm, Frank’s employees — from administrative offices to rig
floors — are taught to be aware of the established principles of
excellence in quality, health, safety and the environment.
Sometimes the most routine tasks offer lessons about preventable injuries. This is why a pre-job safety meeting is conducted
as a team. For example, backing out a joint of casing due to a
bad makeup seems simple, safe and routine; yet, suddenly, the
power tongs knock the operator off the stand.
Awareness is paying attention to the procedural details in order
to prevent injury. In the power-tongs example, the experienced
operator should have stopped and discussed the next steps that
focused on adjusting his (“his” means the operator takes ownership
of safety procedures) snub line and backing out the joint safely.
Inaction can and does produce consequences.
A major principle behind Project Zero can best be summed up
as S.A.F.E.: “See the hazard, Act on it, Fix it now, and Eliminate it
forever.” At Frank’s, stopping the job, managing the change with
Project Zero and actively caring about the value of safety will lead to
safer and smarter decisions. However, in the end, each person is
responsible for following established procedures relative to his or
her own job description.

In the July 2012 edition of FI Direct, I mentioned a “renewed sense
of excitement” for the upcoming year. This excitement will bring an
increase of goods and services for operations around the globe.

excellence, it cannot be achieved without a safe operation.
An increase of services will inherently bring an increase of exposure
to unwanted incidents. Since the inception of Frank’s, we have established a reputation of being a safe and reliable service company
as well as an industry leader. Leaders require a safety attitude with a
belief that all incidents and injuries are preventable. I am asking that
this belief exist at all levels of our organization.
I am committed to a safe operation; I need you to be committed as well. During the next few months, Frank’s will be engaged
in activities designed to promote a clear vision and expectations
leading to ZERO.
Our injury and incident goal will always be ZERO. ZERO is the most
important number in safety. As an industry leader, we cannot and
will not fail to prevent injuries and incidents. Our customers today
are really paying attention to our safety record as a key performance
indicator for continued business.
Keep in mind, the HSE/Safety department is responsible for ensuring operations has the right tools in place for a safe operation;
however, operational excellence is the responsibility of operations and must hold personnel accountable for a safe operation.
The mission is simple — no incidents and no injuries.
Our mission of being a safe and reliable service company has not
changed. However, our mission to Project Zero means, now

Equipment Repair Service Center
I
n April 2012, Frank’s held a ribboncutting ceremony in Lafayette to
open an 18,000-square-foot Equipment Repair Service Center. The facility
opened in response to the growing need
to remanufacture large quantities of
equipment while adhering to engineered
requirements. During the first two months
of operation, the shop reconditioned and
released 148 tools back into operation.
Compared to last year’s numbers, this
year’s production could double or triple
the number of tools released into operation if the current pace is maintained.
To achieve this, the new Equipment Repair
Service Center houses three different
repair groups — hoisting and handling
equipment inspection and repair, power
tong repair, and power unit repair. The
hoisting and handling equipment department includes four welding stations, four
inspection stations, 11 grinding stations,
an assembly/disassembly station and a
Wheelabrator blasting unit. Each work
area contains built-in staging areas to
enhance productivity.
On the other side are rebuilding areas
that are set up for both power tongs
and power units. In front of this area is a
dedicated space set aside for hydraulic
torque gauges to be manufactured, remanufactured and calibrated. Throughout
the facility, all personnel collaborate with
engineers and quality assurance to ensure
standards are met or exceeded at various
checkpoints along the repair line.

The layout of the Equipment Repair
Service Center is optimized for efficiency
by coupling strategically designed process
flow plans with state-of-the-art equipment; thus, repair turnaround time is decreased. The service center has improved
communication and efficiency, which will
strengthen all operations worldwide.
While this facility certainly remanufactures
Frank’s own equipment, an added benefit
is that it repairs equipment from other
manufacturers as well. Frank’s International is the only service company in the world
authorized by VOV and Blohm+Voss to
remanufacture their branded equipment
to original equipment (OE) standards, and
authorization is specific to only Frank’s
Lafayette location. Keith Mosing, Frank’s
Chairman and CEO, said, “We now have
the only facility outside of the original
equipment manufacturers that is actually
certified to repair, inspect and service their
equipment. This saves us and our customers time and money.”
The service center has a custom-built
tracking system that allows improved
management over repair activities,
accounting and performance monitoring. The real-time tracking system
monitors and documents repair actions,
status and costs required to bring the
assets up to OE standards. The system
also enables the three repair groups to
coordinate shipments to and from the
asset owner, ensuring tracking consistency throughout the Equipment Repair
Service Center.
Manufacturing and repair systems are
only as good as the people who operate
them. Overseeing the Equipment Repair
Service Center is Frank’s corporate director
of quality, Jude Boudreaux. Boudreaux
started with Frank’s in 1996 and has been
in his current role since 2000. His responsibilities include active involvement in dayto-day activities associated with quality,
inspection and welding stretching around
the globe. In addition to Boudreaux's
certification as an ASNT NDT Level III in
magnetic particle and ultrasonic inspection, he holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology and a master
of science degree in engineering and
technology management from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “Having a
strong quality-assurance voice present
in the repair center ensures established
procedures and protocols are consistently
followed,” Boudreaux said.
Since 1938, Frank’s commitment to quality
and equipment integrity has served the
company and its customers well. With
the opening of its new Equipment Repair
Service Center, Frank’s will continue its established history of getting the job done
right and safely.

As with every Frank’s base, our goals and objectives
are as one: to ensure Frank’s International strives to be
the best in what we do.
In late 2011, during a management
meeting, goals and objectives for the
Frank’s base were discussed. The goal of
having the Frank’s facility certified by the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was something that excited
all involved. With the facility being 99
percent locally operated, it gave the team
extra incentive to show the Frank’s family
its commitment to Frank’s. Being able to
achieve such recognition would also show
all international oil companies Frank’s eagerness to continue to improve. The team
set about the challenge with the drive and
desire to succeed led by Adham Kifafi, the
QHSE manager in Egypt. His knowledge
and continued interaction with all the
staff, supported by the country manager,
Robin De Kort, drove the process through
2011, resulting in the base passing various
interim audits, which served as additional
energy to the workforce, seeing that their
focus was gaining results. The enthusiasm
and energy levels remained throughout
2011 and into early 2012, when final dates
were in place for the arrival of the external
ISO team to carry out the final inspection/audit of the Frank’s facility, as with all
other stages of this process. The expectations were very high; however, this did not
deter the Frank’s team, and, as a result, ISO
was pleased to confirm that the Frank’s
Egypt facility had achieved ISO 9001:2008
recognition on May 14, 2012.
As with everything that Frank’s does, this
could not have been achieved without
an immense amount of teamwork, and,
with that, we would like to thank Mr. Colin
Thatcher, Frank’s Aberdeen QHSE manager, for his continued belief and, of course,
senior management support.

arrived and was able to get him out by
using the Jaws of Life.
On June 12, William Pugh was driving a
tanker truck loaded with crude oil when
he lost control and it rolled over on its
side. Darryl Swierc and Jerry Nino saw the
accident happen and rushed over to help
the passengers. Swierc and Nino were

who they consider heroes for saving their
lives. The company that Swierc works for,
Frank’s Casing, wanted to honor the two
men in a very special way by inviting them
to attend the biweekly safety meeting.

hands and gave Swierc and Nino plaques
thanking them for risking their own lives.

record high in attendance out of its 30 years in Houston,
surpassing last year’s number of 78,645 with a whopping
89,400. The number was proof that Houston’s energy corridor is
eager to learn and create new technologies through the practice of safety and environmental awareness.

On the weekend of April 14 and 15, Frank’s sponsored a sporting
event for Jean-Marc Guillou Academy in Takoradi, Ghana. Frank’s
participated at the event to demonstrate football to young
children from the ages of 6 through 12. More than 300 children
participated at the sporting event, where fun was enjoyed by all!
Frank’s employees also participated in the event and had given
a Frank’s T-shirt to every child. The technical director of the
academy, Luc Guillou, greatly appreciated the organization of
this event. All would not have been possible without the help
from Melanie Axmann, born in France and passionate about
football! She was the main organizer of the entire weekend and
did everything from finding the perfect field to play on down to
the catering of lunch and beverages.
Frank’s country manager, Mikel Axmann, kicked off the event
with a small speech and embraced the opportunity of being

there in the presence of the academy with smiles stretched
across children’s faces as they played on the field.
More than 30 children possessed possible future talent and moved
on to Accra at JMG Academy. While we wait to see these future
players on our screen, Frank's family wishes them good luck!
One of the children who participated in the event has been selected and now plays for the academy. He will continue to train until he
is 18 years old, and, if he continues to succeed, we may see him on
TV playing for a professional football club in Europe!

two-day quality assurance (QA) boot camp
in Lafayette on June 26 and 27. The boot
camp is part of a series of training programs
designed to reinforce policies and checkpoints that ensure products and services
provided by Frank’s are safe and reliable.
Long before the BP incident in the Gulf of Mexico increased the
oil and gas industry’s quality and safety awareness, FI began to
develop, implement and maintain an extensive system of checks
and balances to ensure the delivery of environmentally safe
products and services that meet or exceed customer expectations while, at the same time, keeping employees injury-free.
The designer of the FI system, Corporate Quality Assurance Director Jude Boudreaux, said, “What my team and I have in place
is a tool that shines a bright light on the manufacturing and
operations processes that shows us not only how to improve
products and services but also how to prevent problems as well.
We take seriously what Benjamin Franklin learned long ago, that
‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’”

During the two-day QA boot camp, Boudreaux and his team
showed how hundreds of checkpoints along the manufacturing
and operations process line have produced extraordinary results.
For example, from the moment a customer calls Frank’s International to the time the job is completed, 18 major checkpoints,
each with multiple checklists, ensure people, equipment and
tools provide a safe and reliable service.
How reliable? A recent analysis of performance data reveals FI
equipment operated successfully more than 98 percent of the
time. Preventing and minimizing equipment breakdowns translate into safer work environments while reducing rig downtime.
One of the employees attending the QA boot camp summed up
the whole experience best when he said, “This training reminds
me that, when I am out on the job, my crew and I are not alone.
It is pretty incredible to know so many people have already
done so much to make sure we get the job done right.”

tubulars. Established in 1938 by Mr. Frank Mosing as a one-crew
casing company, Frank’s International now employs more than
3,500 people and remains family-owned to this day.

John Wheeler,
Chief Operating Officer, Retires
J
ohn Wheeler started his tenure with
Frank’s in the summer of 1978 in Alvin,
Texas, as a sales representative calling
on Houston port companies. While working
at Frank’s, John completed his law degree at
South Texas College of Law/Houston in 1980.
After four years of being a sales representative, John replaced initial management in the Singapore office, taking over
as managing director. John continued
expansion in the Far East, Middle East,
Europe and Africa.
After 17 years in Singapore, John transferred
to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to manage
the FAME Group, as well as serving as Chief
Operating Officer of Frank’s International.
John Wheeler has given many years of
service to Frank’s, and it will be difficult
to replace his 35-year tenure. John has
chosen to retire with his wife, Darlene,
in Rockport, Texas, which is where they
have always imagined retiring. John’s
contributions have played a significant
role in Frank’s success over the years, and
not enough can be said about how his
presence will be missed. The entire Frank’s
family congratulates and wishes John and
Darlene great happiness and prosperity
during his well-deserved retirement in
coastal Texas.
Capt. George Dodge Retires
C
apt. George Dodge,
founder and
president of Western
Airways, began his aviation
career in the U.S. Air Force as a
maintenance technician. After
leaving the Air Force for civilian life, Capt. Dodge used his
veterans benefit for education
to obtain his airline transport
pilot rating and various jet and
flight instructor ratings. After
instructing and flying charter, Capt. Dodge landed a job as captain for
a small airline, but Capt. Dodge wanted more. After a few years at the
airline, he resigned in 1974 and purchased a small single-engine Piper —
and, thus, Western Airways was born. In the beginning, it was only Capt.
Dodge and his airplane. He would keep track of trips and accounting
with a small carbon-copy receipt book, which he kept in his trusty flight
bag. His mobile office was a well-used Pinto station wagon, which also
carried supplies for cleaning the airplane. Hard work and persistence paid
off, and, in a few short years, Western Airways had grown from a oneairplane, one-pilot operation into the large aviation company it is today.
Western Airways is now one of the oldest and most respected aviation
companies in the country, certified to fly jets worldwide.

Western Airways is one of the oldest and largest aircraft charter
and aircraft management companies in Texas. Western can count
among its customers some of the largest oil and gas companies
in the world, as well as former U.S. presidents, various celebrities,
executives and families. Capt. Dodge is quick to say that he didn’t
do it by himself. He is very proud and thankful to the many loyal
employees who have helped make Western Airways the leader in
the aviation industry that it is today.

recognize his longtime
friend Capt. Keith Mosing.
“Keith and I flew many
hours together back in
the day; Keith has always
been a loyal friend to me
and Western Airways. Capt.
Mosing is a good pilot,
and I would fly with him
anytime.” Capt. Dodge will be retiring at the end of this year, wanting to spend more time with his family — his daughter, Kristi, and his
granddaughter, Austyn. We wish him the best on his new adventure,
wherever it may fly him.
A Remembrance
Larry Kirkland Mosing (1935-2012)
Larry Mosing, the youngest of Frank
Mosing’s three sons, got his first taste of
the business when Frank’s was located in
Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Larry remembered, “I would go out and help paint and
grease equipment. I guess I was about
12 years old when I started.” After Larry
graduated from Lafayette High School, he
enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He
served four years as an aircraft instrumentation instructor, spending the last two
years in Vermont until May 1962, when he
received an honorable discharge.
When Larry returned home to Louisiana,
he immediately went to work at Frank’s
with his father and two brothers, Donald
and Billy. Early on, Larry ran casing crews.
By 1966, his management responsibilities had grown so much that a new man,
Voorhies Short, was hired to run the casing crews. Voorhies recalled, “There was no
way I could do as good of a job as Larry
at Frank’s. He loved what he did, and it
showed. Everyone who worked with Larry
knew that, after his family, the company
was his life.”

employee, remembered, “He would fish
until his freezer filled up, then Mr. Larry
would have a fish fry at Frank’s for the
employees. For him, family was family, at
home and on the job.”
