BAYHAWKS VERSUS OUTLAWS PREVIEW
► The Chesapeake Bayhawks face the Denver Outlaws at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis,
Maryland on Thursday, July 31st, 2014 at 7:30 PM EST. The game will be shown live on CBS Sports Network.
► After a hard-fought win against the Lizards in New York on Sunday, the Bayhawks return home to take on the
Denver Outlaws. Chesapeake suffered a tough loss against the Outlaws on June 21st by a final score of 9-6 at
Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
BAYHAWKS NEWS AND NOTES
May Be Out, But Not Down
The Chesapeake Bayhawks entered Sunday’s game against the New York Lizards already aware they were eliminated
from playoffs, but that didn’t stop them from giving it their all. Trailing for the majority of the game, it was
defenseman Jesse Bernhardt’s 2-point goal in the final quarter that gave the Bayhawks the momentum boost they
needed. Midfielder Peet Poillon’s follow-up goal was the deciding factor, cementing the impressive comeback win.
Although there are only two games left in the 2014 season, Chesapeake is determined to leave a lasting impression
and finish strong heading into the offseason.
“Burn Cancer” Week
MLL’s “Burn Cancer” awareness week was designed to draw attention to the fight against all forms of blood cancer.
“Burn Cancer” week will be held July 31 – August 2 and feature games from all eight MLL teams. Throughout the
action-packed week, all players will wear HF’s lime green shoelaces, MLL coaches will sport lime green shirts and
select players will wear Warrior Lacrosse equipment specifically designed with HEADstrong elements, raising
awareness and representing the patients, survivors, and victims of the disease. Lime green is not only the National
Awareness Color indicating non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but also the adopted color of HEADstrong, which Nick
Colleluori, founder of HEADstrong, believed was meant to invigorate and enliven those who wore it.
Bernhardt’s Big Night
With four points on two goals (one being a 2-pointer) and an assist, Jesse Bernhardt had a stellar outing against the
Lizards. The second-year man has fast proven to be an invaluable part of the Bayhawks lineup, playing shut down
defense while consistently contributing on the offensive end. Throughout nine games, Bernhardt has notched 7 points
on 4 goals and 2 assists while gathering 30 groundballs (second on the team).
Fiorito Fired Up
Goalie Tyler Fiorito put on an MVP performance against the Lizards on Sunday with a career-high 15 saves on 26
shots faced, registering a .577 save percentage. His play garnered the attention of the MLL, who honored the Princeton
All-American with the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week honor. In his third year with the Bayhawks, Fiorito has
stepped up in a big way, filling in for starting goalie Kip Turner, who sustained a broken thumb midway through the
season. Fiorito has made the most of the opportunity, recording 68 saves and a .527 save percentage in six games
played this year.
Back to the Sin Bin
Aggressive and physical play are synonymous with defenseman Brian Spallina, therefore it was no surprise that he
led both teams in penalties Sunday afternoon. The veteran was bestowed with three penalties totaling eight minutes,
putting him at the top of the league with 15 penalty minutes for the season.
Aiming for the Outlaws
The Denver Outlaws have some of the top offensive players in the league, guaranteeing a tough battle for the
Bayhawks. Denver comes into Annapolis still recovering from a devastating 23-22 overtime loss against the Ohio
Machine last Saturday. After already securing a spot in the playoffs, their matchup against Chesapeake is crucial in
their quest to get a top seed.

COACHES CORNER
Head Coach - Dave Cottle
As a renowned collegiate coach, Cottle joined the Bayhawks as a consultant in July of 2010 after
Brendan Kelly took over as head coach. Cottle’s expertise in scouting and evaluating talent proved to
be an asset to the team and helped bring the Bayhawks out of a 5-game losing streak and win a 2010
MLL Championship. Named president of the Bayhawks in January of 2011, Cottle brought a fresh
perspective on leading the organization to new heights through prominent sponsorships and increased
season ticket sales. In April of 2011, Cottle again increased his role with the organization as an
assistant coach for the 2011 season. With his involvement, the Bayhawks boasted a record of 6-6 and
saw a playoff berth in 2011. Becoming Head Coach for Chesapeake in 2012, Cottle led the Bayhawks to back-to-back
Championship titles in 2012 and 2013. A Salisbury University graduate, Cottle spent 19 years coaching at Loyola University
Maryland, leading the men’s lacrosse team to 181 wins and 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. In 2001,
Cottle was named the men’s lacrosse head coach at the University of Maryland where he remained through the 2010 season.
During that time, the Terrapins saw 99 victories and 8 consecutive NCAA playoff appearances.
Defensive Coordinator - Tony Resch
Resch was the head coach of the Philadelphia Wings of the NLL from 1994 to 2001 where he led the
team to four championships. Resch was presented with the NLL Coach of the Year award in 2001 and
in 2008 was inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame. Resch’s MLL coaching career began in 2003 as an
assistant coach with the former Baltimore Bayhawks. He won back-to-back MLL championship titles
in 2006 and 2007 with the Philadelphia Barrage. During his stint with the Barrage, Resch was named
the 2006 Warrior MLL Coach of the Year. Resch was picked up by the Denver Outlaws in 2011 and
under his leadership as defensive coordinator, the franchise set a record for least goals allowed in a
single season (123). A Yale University graduate, Resch boasts two-time All-American and three-time
All-Ivy League honors. The defenseman saw six seasons of play during his career in NLL as a
defenseman, serving as team captain for three of those seasons. Resch was also a member of the MILL Champion
Philadelphia Wings in 1989. The defense standout has international lacrosse experience as both a player and a coach, having
won a gold medal at the World Lacrosse Championship in Perth, Australia in 1990. In 2010, Resch was named as an assistant
coach for Team USA's defending gold medalists. Resch is currently the athletic director at La Salle College High School in
Wyndmoor, Pa., where he also serves as the school’s defensive coordinator.
Assistant Coach - John Lamon
A familiar face to the organization, John Lamon joined the Bayhawks in 2009 as an Assistant Coach.
Bringing with him great insight and experience, he was very influential in leading the effort of the
2010 MLL Championship team. Lamon’s coaching career started in 1980 when he was hired as an
Assistant Coach at North Carolina State University. He moved back to Maryland a year later where he
became the Assistant Coach at the Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland for two more seasons.
Lamon then spent the next 23 years coaching youth lacrosse in Anne Arundel County, where he led
teams to both county and state championships. A University of Maryland graduate, Lamon’s collegiate
lacrosse achievements include the title of All-Atlantic Coast Conference and a two-time All-American
in both 1978 and 1979. Post-graduation, Lamon went on to claim two National Championships with the Maryland Lacrosse
Club, was an eight time USCLA All-Club Attackman, four time Hero’s Club Attackman of the Year, two time USCLA
Player of the Year, and also inducted into the Maryland Lacrosse Club Hall of Fame. Lamon’s pro lacrosse career was spent
with the Washington Wave’s Indoor Team from 1985-1988, where he was awarded the MVP award in 1988. In 1986, Lamon
was a member of the World Champion US Lacrosse Team. Outside of his play, Lamon holds a big presence in giving back to
the lacrosse community. Through that service he was awarded the Willis Bilderback Award and the Annapolis Touchdown
Club Award, both for service and contributions to youth lacrosse.

Assistant Coach – Brian Reese
Brian Reese joined the Bayhawks in 2011 after spending 6 years with the Outlaws. Reese has a
proven track record with the team, coming off of three seasons as the Outlaws’ Head Coach/GM.
During that time he guided the team to a 32-17 (.653) record, four consecutive playoff berths and
two championship game appearances. In 2009, Reese was named MLL Coach of the Year, after
Denver finished with the league’s best record (9-3) and earned an appearance in the MLL title
game against Toronto. He also served as Denver’s general manager since the team’s inception in
2005. Reese is well experienced in the lacrosse world, as a former player in the NLL from 199805 and in the MLL from 2001-05, where he was a four-time MLL All-Star. Reese was a defenseman for
Maryland from 1995-98, garnering All-American honors as a senior. He and his wife live in Baltimore
with their three children.
