The game will be shown live on Youtube. ► After a close road loss against the Machine on the Fourth of July, the Bayhawks head home to face the Rochester Rattlers. Chesapeake suffered a heartbreaking loss to Rochester in the first double overtime game in MLL history on June 5th by a final score of 8-7 at Sahlen’s Stadium. BAYHAWKS NEWS AND NOTES This One Hurts The Chesapeake Bayhawks suffered their seventh loss of the season on July 4th against the Ohio Machine, pushing the defending champions to last place in the league. After trailing by one goal in the first quarter, Chesapeake took and maintained the lead throughout the third. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when they were outscored 5-2, that the Bayhawks saw victory fade from their grasp. In their loss, Chesapeake allowed a season-high 16 goals from Ohio, three (including a 2-pointer) being from midfielder Marcus Holman. Wild Walters Once again, Joe Walters put on a commanding performance for the Bayhawks, notching a superb 8 points on 4 goals and 4 assists. In just five games, the perennial all-star has gathered 9 goals and 15 assists for a total of 24 points to lead the team. Big Moves In a trade with the Florida Launch, the Chesapeake Bayhawks have acquired midfielder Kevin Crowley and a fourth round 2015 collegiate draft pick. In exchange, Florida received midfielders Steven Brooks, David Earl and Jon Hayes. Crowley, a 2014 MLL All-Star, is a big addition to the Bayhawks, having been awarded the Player of the Year honor for his tremendous play last season. Career Mark for Burns A week after making the final 23-man roster for the U.S. Men’s National Team, midfielder Dan Burns played one of his best games for the Bayhawks. The speedy University of Maryland alum scored his first career goal against the Machine with an impressive crank shot in transition, giving Chesapeake a one point lead heading into halftime. World Championships With the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships currently taking place in Denver, Colorado, seven of the Bayhawks starters will be absent as they face the Rattlers. Attackman Brendan Mundorf, midfielders Matt Abbott and Dan Burns, and defensemen Michael Evans and Jesse Bernhardt are all representing Team USA while new addition Kevin Crowley and defenseman Jason Noble compete for Canada. With seven starters out for Week 11, the Bayhawks will see the return of midfielders Kyle Dixon and Adam Rand, and defenseman Brian Spallina, who were previously on injured reserve. First-Place Rattlers The Rattlers are currently tied for the best record in the league alongside the Denver Outlaws, having won five of their last six games. This will be a big test for Chesapeake as they seek to keep their playoff hopes alive. After three weeks on the road, the Bayhawks look forward to playing in front of their home crowd. Rattling the Cages As a captain for Team USA, Chesapeake won’t have to worry about containing attackman Kevin Leveille Thursday night, who scored the winning goal in their double overtime matchup. The veteran had a standout night, scoring a hat trick and breaking the MLL all-time goal scoring record in the process. Justin Turri will be one to watch, as he leads the team in goals, assists and total points. 2 2014 MLL WEEKLY HONORS Week Warrior Offensive Player of the Week 1 Kevin Buchanan, BOS Garrett Thul, FLA Casey Powell, FLA Casey Powell, FLA Marcus Holman, OH Kevin Leveille, ROC Ben Hunt, CHE Paul Rabil, BOS Joe Walters, CHE Rob Pannell, NY 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Warrior Defensive Player of the Week Chad Weidmaier, OH Mike Manley, ROC Jesse Schwartzman, DEN Joe Fletcher, NY Mike Manley, ROC Joe Cinosky, NY Lee Zink, DEN Jesse Schwartzman, DEN Ryan Flanagan, CHA Brian Farrell, OH 3 Cascade Rookie of the Week None None John Locascio, ROC Kieran McArdle, FLA Tom Schreiber, OH Justin Ward, CHA Jordan Wolf, ROC Jordan Wolf, ROC Mark Cockerton, ROC Rob Emery, BOS No. 1 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 14 15 18 21 29 37 39 40 41 42 57 58 59 91 92 --- CHESAPEAKE BAYHAWKS TEAM ROSTER Last Name First Name Position Height Weight College Walters Joe Midfield 6’ 0” 192 lbs. Cottle’s expertise in scouting and evaluating talent proved to be an asset to the team and helped bring the Bayhawks out of a 5-game losing streak and win a 2010 MLL Championship. Named president of the Bayhawks in January of 2011, Cottle brought a fresh perspective on leading the organization to new heights through prominent sponsorships and increased season ticket sales. In April of 2011, Cottle again increased his role with the organization as an assistant coach for the 2011 season. With his involvement, the Bayhawks boasted a record of 6-6 and saw a playoff berth in 2011. Becoming Head Coach for Chesapeake in 2012, Cottle led the Bayhawks to back-to-back Championship titles in 2012 and 2013. A Salisbury University graduate, Cottle spent 19 years coaching at Loyola University Maryland, leading the men’s lacrosse team to 181 wins and 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. In 2001, Cottle was named the men’s lacrosse head coach at the University of Maryland where he remained through the 2010 season. During that time, the Terrapins saw 99 victories and 8 consecutive NCAA playoff appearances. Defensive Coordinator - Tony Resch Resch was the head coach of the Philadelphia Wings of the NLL from 1994 to 2001 where he led the team to four championships. Resch was presented with the NLL Coach of the Year award in 2001 and in 2008 was inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame. Resch’s MLL coaching career began in 2003 as an assistant coach with the former Baltimore Bayhawks. He won back-to-back MLL championship titles in 2006 and 2007 with the Philadelphia Barrage. During his stint with the Barrage, Resch was named the 2006 Warrior MLL Coach of the Year. Resch was picked up by the Denver Outlaws in 2011 and under his leadership as defensive coordinator, the franchise set a record for least goals allowed in a single season (123). A Yale University graduate, Resch boasts two-time All-American and three-time All-Ivy League honors. The defenseman saw six seasons of play during his career in NLL as a defenseman, serving as team captain for three of those seasons. Resch was also a member of the MILL Champion Philadelphia Wings in 1989. The defense standout has international lacrosse experience as both a player and a coach, having won a gold medal at the World Lacrosse Championship in Perth, Australia in 1990. In 2010, Resch was named as an assistant coach for Team USA's defending gold medalists. Resch is currently the athletic director at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pa., where he also serves as the school’s defensive coordinator. Assistant Coach - John Lamon A familiar face to the organization, John Lamon joined the Bayhawks in 2009 as an Assistant Coach. Bringing with him great insight and experience, he was very influential in leading the effort of the 2010 MLL Championship team. Lamon’s coaching career started in 1980 when he was hired as an Assistant Coach at North Carolina State University. He moved back to Maryland a year later where he became the Assistant Coach at the Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland for two more seasons. Lamon then spent the next 23 years coaching youth lacrosse in Anne Arundel County, where he led teams to both county and state championships. A University of Maryland graduate, Lamon’s collegiate lacrosse achievements include the title of All-Atlantic Coast Conference and a two-time All-American in both 1978 and 1979. Post-graduation, Lamon went on to claim two National Championships with the Maryland Lacrosse Club, was an eight time USCLA All-Club Attackman, four time Hero’s Club Attackman of the Year, two time USCLA Player of the Year, and also inducted into the Maryland Lacrosse Club Hall of Fame. Lamon’s pro lacrosse career was spent with the Washington Wave’s Indoor Team from 1985-1988, where he was awarded the MVP award in 1988. In 1986, Lamon was a member of the World Champion US Lacrosse Team. Outside of his play, Lamon holds a big presence in giving back to the lacrosse community. Through that service he was awarded the Willis Bilderback Award and the Annapolis Touchdown Club Award, both for service and contributions to youth lacrosse. 7 Assistant Coach – Brian Reese Brian Reese joined the Bayhawks in 2011 after spending 6 years with the Outlaws. Reese has a proven track record with the team, coming off of three seasons as the Outlaws’ Head Coach/GM. During that time he guided the team to a 32-17 (.653) record, four consecutive playoff berths and two championship game appearances. In 2009, Reese was named MLL Coach of the Year, after Denver finished with the league’s best record (9-3) and earned an appearance in the MLL title game against Toronto. He also served as Denver’s general manager since the team’s inception in 2005. Reese is well experienced in the lacrosse world, as a former player in the NLL from 199805 and in the MLL from 2001-05, where he was a four-time MLL All-Star. Reese was a defenseman for Maryland from 1995-98, garnering All-American honors as a senior. He and his wife live in Baltimore with their three children.
