THE RAMPAGE Montwood High School Daniel Gamboa Staff Writer 12000 Montwood, El Paso, Texas 79926 March 2011 Volume 5, Issue 4 Extreme El Paso Weather – Is it the New Storm 2006? El Paso’s unpredictable weather, electrical issues, and water shortage were the cause of the early spring break for the students, faculty, and staff of the Socorro Independent School District. It affected many people that had plans for the vacation. The fourteen days off that that keep the students from going insane have now been reduced to only a week and two days making it from the 11th to the 28th El Pasoans struggles to drive in weather that was out of to only the 17th to the 28th, taking three the ordinary. Grocery stores managed to do quite well, since all the canned items and packs of water were gone! “I went grocery shopping with my mom and there was no water on the shelves, so we asked an associate to see if they had more in the storage room and but she told us to come back the next day. I kind of felt bad for her because she looked exhausted” said Danty Aguilar. Another big issue for the students from MHS was the lack of entertainment, since many of the parents were not allowing them out because of safety reasons. The only way to be able to survive the curfew was with a great dosage of electronic devices, such as cell phones, computers, and the fantastic television. But sadly all those items require power to function so students had to face real life, like in the old days. “I was watching Jersey Shore and I was getting extremely into in when the TV went off.” says senior Ariana Gannt . Currently it seems that the city has everything under control as there have not been any issues for the past couple of weeks regarding electricity or water, however the weather is still quite indecisive and unpredictable. All the El Pasoans can wish for is to not suffer from these kinds of apocalyptical problems again anytime soon. Index Sports Spring Break 3 4-5 Entertainment 6 The Corners 7 College Spot 8 NEWSPAGE2 Unexplainable Deaths Paint Gas Prices Continue to Rise Frightening Picture for New Year Paul Justice Biagas Robert Fernandez Staff Writer Staff Writer In our economically linked world, countries rely on each other for common goods and necessities. Gasoline is pumped every single day; the oil that we use for gasoline is bought from many countries in the Middle East. Libya is one of the leading producers of oil in the Middle East. Libya is ruled by Muammar el-Qaddafi who seized power in 1969. In February of 2011, many Libyan cities erupted in peaceful movements. Although the protests began with a few individuals, the voice has enlarged faster than any other protest, and has spread to the capital of Tripoli, Libya. Qaddafi unleashed a level of violence upon the peaceful movements, and has won the tribal leaders along with the larger share of the military. The rebels retreated to their front, and hid in locations near oil reserves and refineries; hoping to find a sanctuary. On March 8th, Qaddafi renewed his onslaught, conducting airstrikes near some of the oil refineries in the country. What is happening in another nation seems pointless to care about, since the violence has not reached the U.S. beaches. Most students see what happens in the rest of the world, and they decide to turn their eyes. The problem is that this war drastically affects your lives. The United States continues to demand oil, up to 16 million of barrels a day, and continues to neglect the issues that this could cause. As a war erupts in Libya, as oil refineries are destroyed, as companies are annihilated by onslaughts, as revolution continues, gasoline production halts. The United States rely on other countries for oil, although we “produce” our own oil. The price of oil in America per barrel went from $ 102.40 to $ 107.12 on March 2nd, only 2 weeks since the protests in Libya began. The reason that oil prices are flying through the roofs is because the supplies are becoming more limited as a major supplier (Libya) was lost. The demand for oil has not changed, but the suppliers have. Erik Kreil, an observer from the U.S. Energy Information Agency, stated “The situation in Libya is expected to disrupt the cartel production target of the world leading oil producing countries, OPEC.” Oil in Libya is a major export for the world; Libya produces nearly 1.5 million barrels of oil daily. That means countries that are oil fiends like England, France, and the U.S. must find other sources of oil, or suffer horrendous consequences. These consequences including paying 5, 6, even 7 dollars a gallon! An economy that is barely beginning to rebound such as ours, definitely does not want to witness those prices for a necessity. The reliance for common goods and necessities can very well be the downfall of our great nation. Consequences could be even more catastrophic. People get paid to work, to work they have to drive to work, when gasoline becomes too expensive, work becomes less appealing, when work becomes less appealing, people stop going, when people stop going, they lose their jobs, when they lose their jobs, they start depending on their government, and when you depend on a government that is not economically stable, bad things happen. Things that can alter your everyday lives indefinitely. After our country celebrated the start of the New Year, a scare in Southern U.S. got everybody a little worried for the outlook of 2011. Many residents in Arkansas and Louisiana stood in awe as they witnessed thousands of black birds fall out of the sky. Under close speculation, the only visible damage to the birds appeared to be blunt trauma, yet the high fall from the sky was to blame for these wounds. Still, many people wanted to figure out what was causing these eerie deaths. The answer was, and still is, a mystery. Lab tests came back to find no toxins present in the bodies of the birds. Only adding to the fear and mayhem of these events, more dead birds in different parts of the world were seen falling out of the sky. Thousands of doves in Italy, Sweden, and Kentucky were found as well. If that was not enough, even more dead animals were turning up in different states across America. Millions of crabs in New England and New Zealand, as well as millions of fish in rivers in Arkansas were found dead without an evident cause. So what was the cause of these unexplainable deaths? Many are arguing that the birds in Arkansas died from exposure to exploding fireworks from the celebrations for the New Year. Other theories prove to be more frightening. There is an idea going around that these eerie sudden deaths are an omen of the world coming to an end in 2012. Whether you are a believer of science fiction or facts, the truth is that these deaths are extremely unnerving. The deaths continue to mystify those who studied the demise of these crabs, fish, and birds. Here is what a few fellow Rams think of this odd issue. Freshman Valeria Carrillo thinks “that the deaths of thousands of birds are because of the world ending!” Sarahi Castillo wholeheartedly agrees with her, saying “this definitely has to deal with the world ending!” Thankfully, there are some skeptics that keep our hopes up for the future, one of them being Junior Jasmine Venzor, who believes “it could just be a disease going around.” Whether you’re on optimist or not, one thing’s for certain. These deaths surely are causing up a stir, both in the scientific world and in the lives of many Rams. Senior Varsity Captain Elijah Garcia says she plans to “show off our talents and hard work, and take home the gold.” With this competition she hopes to “gain back respect from fellow teams and prove that we are still one of the top teams in El Paso.” Varsity Cheerleader Kaylee Vasquez says, “ We all feel more confident going into our next competition. I’m really excited!” And, for the third year in a row the team took first place in their division and won Grand Champions at the Americas Cup. They continue to show their winning spirit and MHS pride. Soccer Teams Take Aim at District Championship Gaby Fairve Staff Writer Soccer is the one of the only sports that is not only played in the United States but is played worldwide. Soccer consists of having endurance, long sprints, and quick moves. The season has started for the Montwood Soccer team. The soccer girls are practicing every morning, starting off with working out in the gym room and they finish their practice by perfecting their plays for their future games. The captains this year are juniors Sabrina Gonzalez, Alejandra Martinez, and senior captain Ashley Casillas. Junior Varsity Captain is Carolina Viallobos. “We have put so much effort, time, and dedication to perfecting the team. We deserve District Champions. We are working extremely hard to go to playoffs. We are striving for the best and only the best!” said junior Eileen Edwards. The girls are ready to take up the field again and dominate the season. This year is different from all the rest with the varsity soccer boys. They are facing major rivals like Socorro and Bel Air. The captains for this year are juniors Jorge Delgado, and Robert Dominguez. Practicing every day afterschool in the hot humid weather shows much dedication and heart for the game of soccer the players have. “Our coach is our motivation to win. We know where we came from and that only makes us stronger.” said senior Jorge Larra. Both girls and boys soccer teams are striving for the best. Their coaches are a huge influence to the teams. They have shown much dedication to teams as they strive to win District Champions and advance to the play-offs. Good luck to everyone! Marisol Aguilar Staff Writer Christmas break ends and what are most students asking themselves? “When is Spring Break?” The month of March brings excitement to many of us because it is the last big break of every school year. Many take the opportunity to go out of town, spend time with their family and friends or just to sleep in. Unfortunately for students in SISD this year’s break is shorter due to the snow and power and water issues that occurred in the month of January. “I think it's kind of dumb that we have to make up three days of our spring vacation, it’s not our fault that the weather conditions were bad," senior Audrey D'Antonio said. Many students are upset because their plans had to be changed because of those three extra days that we have to attend school and they wish that the district had come up with something other than those days. "Instead of taking time off from our break we should make them up during other days that we have for break such as Memorial Day because people already have plans and I bet many are going to be absent." For seniors this news upset them since it is their last spring break of high school, " Me and my friends (Jacob,Timmy, Pascual and Zack) are going out of town. We are planning a trip to Jamaica, but we think it kind of sucks because it’s our last break ever before going to college and it gets cut short," senior Joel Perez said. So whether you have a big trip planned or just planning on resting, spring break ends short for all of us, but at least we didn't get a whole week cut off, right? “ Im going to Florida and to San Antonio to visit my baby cousin” Sean Martinez “My brothers and I are going to party in Dallas with some old friends” Celeste Rodriguez “I’m going to California, to go to Six Flags and to visit my Grandparents. Sam Gonzalez Staff Writer In Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky opens up a whole new world of ballet to viewers through the story of a ballerina whose desire for perfection pushes her over the edge. The story follows Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman), a frail ballerina who at last gets her time in the spotlight, when she is cast as the White and Black Swan, in a modern day re-telling of Swan Lake. Nina, the perfectionist that she is, masters the role of the White Swan with no trouble but lacks the lust and passion required for her alter role as the Black Swan. Her director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) criticizes her lack of natural appeal, and compares her to that of a rival dancer Lily (Mila Kunis), who although does not share the same discipline as Nina, but can embody the darkness Leroy wishes to see in the Black Swan. With psychological twists and turns, doppelgangers, questionable sexual orientation, and thrilling scenes that leave you breathless, Aronofsky goes beyond the normal stereotype of the pink and pretty world we have come to see as ballet. He pulls back the curtain showing the true pain and devastating hard work that is this world; he shows the true colors of ballet. Portman’s performance only added to on Aronofsky’s work, seen in her utterly stunning dedication to the film. Not only did her best of acting skills come into play but she endured the battered feet along with Nina. In the end, Nina is a beautiful catastrophe, but I can’t say the same for the film. As the credits rolled I felt as though this film was nothing short of a beautiful masterpiece. Much like Nina, this film desired nothing short of perfection; and just like the troubled young ballerina; perfection was obtained. Ms. P.
