Rams in Position for District Title
Amanda Varela
Staff Reporter
The Montwood Rams
had just come off a big win
against undefeated in district
and former district champions
the Coronado Thunderbirds.
The players and the fans all
knew how crucial this game
was and were now fighting
for the district crown. On the
night of October 22 Montwood met with their rivals,
Americas High School face
to face on the white painted
50 yard line. The beginning of the game started off
unsteadily,the Rams were
surprised with two big runs
by Blazers quarterback Dustin
Daily and running back Jack
Fields.
Leaving the Montwood fans silent,
staring at the scoreboard and
watching the Rams fall behind
by two touchdowns. The
crowd remained quiet, waiting
anxiously to make a shocking
come back and score. Suddenly we fired back with two
touchdowns tying the first half
at 14-14.
Half time performances were to be up next,
but with the band’s absence
for a competition, the Emerald
Dancers were the only ones
left to show what Montwood
was all about. Having technical difficulties with their
music, the dancers were left to
perform without it. Music or
no music the Emerald Dancers
still came up on top, performing amazingly which got the
crowd fanatical and up and
ready for the third quarter.
The football players
came out stronger than ever
scoring another two touchdowns leaving the score at 2814 going into the fourth quarter. Another touchdown drive
capped off with an unexpected
run by Americas player, Jack
Fields kept them alive. Montwood quickly shut them down
with a few first down passes
and runs. As the back and
forth game ended, the Rams
took the victory 28-21. Varsity
Football player Eddie Rueda,
number 7, responded to this
immense win by saying, “We
came in knowing what was at
stake and what had to be done.
We executed and made big
plays every time we needed.
We played the way Montwood
football should play and got
the big win.”

All Region, for those unfamiliar, is basically an audition,
and if the student receives
the predetermined score, the
student will be a part of the
judge’s honor band, choir, or
orchestra and will perform
for public eyes and ears. This
year, the All Region competition was held at Montwood.
On October 2, 2010 the
choir performed in hopes that
many students would qualify
for the All Region Choir,
which performs as professional singers. Choir students

Surprise Shooting Shocks The University of
Texas at Austin

Colton Tooney was the
name all over the news after
the tragedy that happened at the
University of Texas at Austin. The
student ran through the campus
wearing a ski mask and a loaded
AK-47, which he openly fired randomly in the air, and into the direction of people who came across
him. Luckily, he was not able to
hit anyone during the incident.
The gunman then holed himself up
in a library building before killing
himself. It is still not clear why
this happened or what might have
been his motivation for the attack.
As soon as the shooting started,
the school sent out a message to
all of the students and faculty,
warning them to stay away from
the library where Colton Tooney
was, and also to remain indoors
until it was safe to go outside
again. After being notified that
the gunman had killed himself,
the school put a message on their
website stating that the school was
closed and that all classes were
cancelled for the day.
Many of the students at
Montwood have UT on their college list. However, issues like this
make the school seem unsafe and
causes students to hesitate on applying but they shouldn’t be too

Teachers expect a lot
from students, especially from
those in Dual Credit and AP
classes. There are constant
deadlines and a perpetual
load of work that teachers
need to cover. Missing school
does not make that unending
amount of work any easier.
It just causes students to add
to their already full plate.
Attending high school is
stressful enough as it is. Now Jullissa Brown a senior states that

they go directly home to go take care of their child. Some
mothers have help from the baby’s father or their families but there are others who have to do it all alone. Senior
Valerie Galindo says, “Having my baby has completely
changed my life, I have learned a lot! The only bad thing is
that I am not old enough to be responsible.” School has gotten harder for her because she has to take care of her baby,
but she enjoys being with her daughter and does not regret
it.
Lives always tend to change when there is an addition to the family. There will be the highs and the inevitable
lows, and the smiles and the unavoidable tears. “Being a
teen mother has been very difficult but it helps to have the
support of both family and friends. I would not advise anyone to have a child at a young age, unless you feel as if you
are ready and you have the time and patience that it takes”,
comments senior Alex Garcia. It is not easy for these mothers but they have pulled through and made it far. Remember
that teen pregnancy is 100% preventable. Never be afraid to
ask for advice or to talk to an adult about any concerns.

“Charlie Brown” Musical
Coming Soon!
Khayla Golucke
Staff Reporter
The Montwood High School Emerald
Players and director Evanie Gamboa are bringing some nostalgia to the theater season with
their production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie
Brown.” The musical showcases all the major
characters we know and love from the series –
the infamous Charlie Brown (Adrian Salas), his
sister Sally (Aja Segapeli), his loyal pup Snoopy
(Colton Segapeli), the sassy Lucy (Aleksya Aguirre), her blanket-toting brother Linus (Connor
Myers), and the musical Schroeder (Eli Zamora),
along with a chorus of other singing and dancing
characters from the beloved comic strip. Senior
Connor Myers, who was also a lead role in last
year’s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”,
is excited about the new show because of its first
time director.
“Ms. Gamboa was a student of our old
musical theater teachers, Jaime Barba and Beth
Leffler, so she was trained by who I consider
to be the best experts on this kind of show. You
should expect Charlie Brown to be a lot like how
Montwood’s old directors would have envisioned
it”, Myers said. In fact, Ms. Gamboa chose this
particular musical, in part, because it was the first
musical she did when she was a student at Montwood. Of course, this time she brings her own vision to the table, and you can expect to see chorus
members as dancing blankets, a singing cabaret
number involving Snoopy, and of course a larger
than life, red dog house.
Audience members of all ages are sure to
enjoy the celebrated world of the Peanuts characters as they come to life this December. Come
support the Emerald Players and the talented
students of Montwood in this season’s not-to-miss
musical. The show starts Friday, December 3rd at
6:30 PM and will run for the next two weekends.

Cowboy day had us all talking country. The students all wore their cowboy attire, sporting
plaid button ups, cowboy boots and of course the famous hat.
Thursday
Dress Up Day - The Tony Harper Gym was a sea of fancy clothes, colorful mums, and garters
that shined. The Homecoming pep rally got the crowd ready to go for the big homecoming
game against the Eastwood Troopers; it opened with a very memorable rendition of the National Anthem sung by Connor Meyers. Choir Teacher Mr. Estala got the crowd pumped with
a unique version of the famous Montwood Wiggalo. The pep rally also had awesome performances from the Montwood Cheerleaders who got the crowd started off with their cheers and
chants. The Emerald Dancers once again blew the crowd away with their unique moves. And
last the A Team, finished off the performances with their flags in the air. After spirit like that
the varsity football team had no problem overcoming the Troopers leaving them in the dust
with a score of 49 to 13.

Doug MacRay, a Charlestown guy who attempted to leave

deals with his violent best friend and partner Jem (Jeremy

and his Irish gangster boss (Pete Postlethwaite).
Doug, under the pretense of “taking care of the
witness” of their latest job, falls for Claire (Rebecca Hall)
who has no idea that Doug was the masked man who held
a gun to her head the day of the robbery. Their relationship
although theoretically twisted, develops quite naturally
until Claire is informed by the ruthless FBI Agent Frawley (Jon Hamm), who has been on the hunt for Doug and
his crew for years, who Doug really is. Claire must then
choose between the law and her new love, while Doug
regrettably agrees to “one last job” before trying to escape
the “family business” and make a new life for himself
elsewhere. The film although dramatic and action packed
had it’s surprisingly hilarious moments and is worth seeing many times.

to our graduation, folks. It definitely does not hurt to have a few colleges in your
mind just to have a wide array of decisions. Today we will be showing off to you the
awesome liberal arts college, St. Edward’s University!
College Name: St. Edward’s
Type: Liberal Arts, Co-ed, 4 year
Location: Austin, TX
Undergraduate Enrollment: 4, 368
Acceptance Rate: 66%
Tuition: $26, 484
While the price and acceptance rate might seem like a reach, there are also
financial aid and academic scholarship opportunities available for this school. With
specialties in business, theater arts, and communications, this school with a very low
student – teacher ratio could be a perfect fit for more creative students out there. Did
you know that St. Edward’s is the sister school to Notre Dame? That is one big deal.
While not in the heart of downtown Austin, students are still able to get that cultural
vibe through buses into downtown. What are you waiting for? Go check out St. Ed’s
at www.gotostedwards.com!
