Not in my lifetime! A few days ago Bishop Loverde sent to the priests the official invitation for those who will be receiving the sacrament of Holy Orders at the cathedral on Saturday, June 6. While our nation will be celebrating the 71st anniversary of D-Day, 7 of our Arlington diocese seminarians will be contemplating on “THE DAY” of their lives. On that day they will hit a major milestone that will impact their eternal life. Holy Orders joins Baptism and Confirmation as the only sacraments that remain with the person forever. As with the other sacraments there’s a lot of excitement that comes with its reception--very similar to getting married. However, we’re well aware of what great and sometimes difficult responsibilities that accompany marriage and family. It is no different in the priesthood. A true priest will experience both the thorns and the roses along the paths of his journey. They are both very good for the soul. Please keep in your prayers the seminarians especially those who are preparing for their ordination. The Dominican priest, Father Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire describes it best that the life of a priest is one of contradiction in these sublime words: “To live in the midst of the world without wishing its pleasures; to be a member of each family, yet belonging to none, to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds; to go from men to God and offer Him their prayers; to return from God to men to bring pardon and hope; to have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; to teach and to pardon, console and bless always, My God, what a life! And it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!” Father Lacordaire’s words of wisdom were inscribed on the back of my St. Agnes ordination holy card that I handed out to my family and friends on the day I became a Catholic priest 20 years ago (1995) this coming Wednesday, May 20th. The brief but poetically true reflection of Lacordaire on the life of a priest still continues to send reverberating chills on my spine 20 years later after I stumbled upon a few remnant copies of these cards. Each year of the 20 has a unique blend of joy and sorrow reaching their respective summit. Not a single year excluded the challenge of a heavy cross; but not a single year did it fail to yield a remarkably satisfying achievement that leveled things out. I would never exchange the past 20 adventurous years of my life as a priest for any other kind of life. Perhaps my image of life as a traveling seesaw is not all that absurd. As long as Our Lord Jesus is on the other side riding up and down with me (sometimes violently), my priestly journey will be just fine no matter where the road leads me. So please continue to pray for me as I reach for my 20year milestone this coming Wednesday. Be assured that you are in my prayers every single day even when I am away from the parish. And being here with you at Saint Francis de Sales parish is one great gift from God that I will always treasure! Your shepherd in Christ, Father Escalante Ask the Priest Q. Why do we call the tabernacle in the church a “tabernacle”? –Anonymous A. The word tabernacle comes from the Latin word, tabernaculum, which means a tent or a dwelling place. Before the Temple was built for the Ark of the Covenant, the Jews kept it in a tent for a temporary sacred place to honor God. A few years later Solomon built a large temple to house the Ark of the Covenant for its permanent dwelling place. Our Catholic faith teaches that Jesus is spiritually and physically present in the Holy Eucharist. In every Catholic Church we keep the Eucharist in a solid and secure sacred place that we call a tabernacle because Our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, really dwells there. This is what makes the Catholic Church different from other churches. We have the real presence of Jesus in our tabernacles. We receive many blessings just by visiting and praying to Jesus while he dwells in the tabernacle. This devotion is often referred to as visiting the Blessed Sacrament. It is unfortunate that not many Catholics realize this incredible gift from God. If people flock to see their favorite celebrities when they are around, Catholics should crowd even more around the tabernacle to be closer to God! Q. Why is there glass on the candles that are near the tabernacle? –Anonymous A. The glass helps to keep the flame burning evenly and prevents the wax from flowing to the side of the candle creating a big mess. Q. Could a couple raised in the Catholic Church and are cohabitating receive the sacrament of reconciliation and then get married in church? –SBC A. If the couple were actively living immorally (intimately active), they would first need to live separately or at least live chastely before they can receive a valid absolution in confession prior to marriage. A valid confession requires a firm purpose of amendment in life which means that a cohabitating couple must first arrange not to live together in order to be validly forgiven. If living separately is just not possible, they would at least need to sleep in separate rooms and live a chaste life prior to marriage. Q. How does one pick the name for the Catholic Church/parish? –A.W. A. Canon Law 1218 mandates, “Each church is to have its own title. Once the church has been dedicated this title cannot be changed.” The local bishop has the final say to officially naming a new church. Oftentimes he discusses the name with the founding pastor. There are times when the name is determined by the saint who lived in that neighborhood as with Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Basilica in Emmitsburg, MD (just a few miles from where we are). The canonization of new saints also inspires the dedication of new churches. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized in 2004 and a new parish bearing her name in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada was built in 2005. An official pronouncement of a dogma can also lead to a church name as in the case of the Immaculate Conception (1854) and the Assumption (1950). Our parish was once only a parish mission on Main Street in Purcellville and was dedicated under the patronage of Saint Francis de Sales in 1921. The mission priest at that time was Father A. J. Ingelgem. He was likely responsible for choosing the name of the mission church. One of the few Catholic families in the Purcellville/ Round Hill area, Mr. and Mrs. Notley Ball, donated the funds and the property for the new church. *** PASTOR’S WISH LIST *** • Compassionate Heart of Mary— Our newly formed Catholic bereavement group led by Beverly Elero & Laura Burgess will hold its inaugural meeting on June 13 @1:30 PM in the old Parish Hall. See this weekend’s Shepherd’s Notes for more details. Come and invite your friends as well. We are excited to announce that Walking with Purpose (WWP) is coming to St. Francis de Sales! A 6-week course entitled “Living in the Father’s Love” will be starting in the Parish Center on Tuesdays at 7:30pm beginning on June 23rd. • Sponsor & dedicate a new classroom for $10k— We are still looking to add more donors to sponsor and dedicate a classroom in the Catholic Education Center. We are hoping to get the plaques ready for next month for those who have already donated to dedicate the classroom of their choice. Six classrooms are still available for sponsorship. In this brief but powerful study, we learn how the Gospels are deeply relevant to our relationships, both with God and with those we love. “Living in the Father’s Love” consists of at home study and meeting once a week as a small group to discuss the weekly lessons. The cost is $30. To register for this class or for more information please email Jen House and/or Katie Magin at [email protected]. To learn more about WWP go to www.walkingwithpurpose.com and stay tuned for our announcement of fall offerings. • New Eucharistic Ministers needed—We need help with new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. TEEN FAITH NEWS TEEN MASS - at 6pm every Sunday. All Teens are welcome. Join us in the front left 4 rows of church as we celebrate the Teen Mass together. No Youth Group - Sunday, May 17th. But if you Instructions for Married People continued When children grow up and begin to have the use of reason, both their fathers and their mothers must most carefully impress the fear of God on their hearts. The devout Queen Blanche performed this duty most fervently in the case of her son, St. Louis the king and often said to him: “My dear child, I would much rather see you die before my eyes than see you commit a single mortal sin.” This caution remained so deeply stamped on his soul that not a day of his life passed without his remembering it and taking all possible care to keep faithfully this divine teaching. In our language, families and generations are called houses; the Hebrews themselves call the birth of children “building up a house”. In this sense it is said that God built up houses for the Egyptian midwives to show that raising a house, that is, a family does not consist in building a splendid residence and storing up vast worldly possessions but in training children well in the fear of God and in virtue. No trouble or labor should be spare to do this, for children are their father’s and mother’s crown.
