Feeling gloomy? Just having a “bad” day? You might consider going for a long walk or vent to a friend or spouse to help change your mood. But, if you want more immediate results, you can just laugh it off! Many studies have shown that laugher can improve our health. You can't feel sad or angry when you're laughing, right? The fact is that laughter itself changes us physiologically. Like exercise or jumping up and down, laughter boosts the heart rate and increases blood flow, so we breathe faster and more oxygen is delivered to the body's tissues. Our facial muscles stretch and we actually burn calories when we're laughing. In fact, the mere act of smiling can alter your mood almost immediately. Here are a few fun facts about laughter: Laughter Reduces Stress: When stressed, we produce a hormone called cortisol. Laughter can significantly reduce cortisol levels. Laughter Can Reduce Pain: Laughter causes us to produce endorphins, which are natural, pain-killing hormones. Laughter Strengthens the Immune System: A hearty laugh decreases stress hormones and increases production of T-cells, immune proteins and infection-fighting antibodies. Laughter Helps the Heart: When we laugh we increase blood flow and the function of blood vessels, which can help prevent cardiovascular problems. Laughter Relaxes the Whole Body: One good belly laugh can relieve physical tension and relax your muscles for up to 45 minutes. Laughter Helps You Recharge: By reducing stress levels and increasing your energy, laughter can help you focus and achieve more. So, not only is a good ole belly laugh a lot of fun, it's good for you! Coming soon….a new Marketing Director Cristin Faith has accepted the role of Marketing Director. If you are a dessert lover and you did not attend, you missed a wonderful treat! Sunday afternoon the library committee held an open house. Those attending were treated to wonderful cookies made by the daughter of Marge Mysorski. It was an opportunity to browse the library, have coffee and cookies, and chat with neighbors. If you have not taken the time to visit our library, please do so in the near future. It is well maintained, well stocked, and a good place to relax. Last Thursday when rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow hit us, our staff was encouraged to leave early. Rosie stayed to fix dinner for us and then spent the night in a guest room. We were lucky to have the wonderful resident volunteers and Rosie to see that we were fed. Thank you! The board met Tuesday morning. There was not a quorum in attendance so no action could be taken, but we had great discussions. Vice President Eric Burmeister presided. Tim Taylor told us the mixing valve on the west side of the building was replaced, but there is more plumbing work needed. Another date was selected to shut off the water and finish the job. Note from Valerius Elementary: “Thank you so much for taking the time to collect Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels for Valerius Elementary! The money raised from the Box Tops is used for things like field trips, assemblies, and supplies and instructional materials for the teachers to use in their classrooms. The labels are going to be redeemed for some items for the PE teacher to use with the kids in gym class (soccer balls, basket balls, and stacking cups). Thanks again — they make a difference for our kids!” The New “One Ring” Cell Phone Scam The Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission just issued urgent warnings about the latest scam racing across the country. It begins with a call to your cell phone from a number you don’t recognize. You don’t have time to answer because they hang up after one ring. Naturally, you’ll be curious about who tried to reach you and wonder if it was an important call. At this point, you should protect yourself by not returning the call! The scam starts when you dial the number. You’ll get billed for an international call at about $20 PLUS $9 per minute that you stay on the call. The scammer gets you to stay on the line by playing recorded music or advertising. The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Internet article, “”One-Ring Cell Phone Scam can Ding your Wallet,” (http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/one-ring-cell-phone-scam-can-ding-yourwallet) warns that area codes commonly displayed on these calls are from 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876. If you’re a victim of this scam, contact your cell phone carrier immediately, keep a close watch on your monthly statements and inform other persons who may be on your cell phone plan. ~~Aging Resources of Central Iowa Needed: Used Eyeglasses, Frames, Cases, and Old Hearing Aids If you have any old eyeglasses, frames, cases, or hearing aids, the Lions Club needs them to recycle.
