Are you stressed? Feeling gloomy? Just having
a “bad” day? You might consider going for a
long walk or vent to a friend or spouse to help
change your mood. But, if you want more immediate results, you can just laugh it off!
Many studies have shown that laugher can improve our health. You can't feel sad or angry
when you're laughing, right?
The fact is that laughter itself changes us physiologically. Like exercise or jumping up and
down, laughter boosts the heart rate and increases blood flow, so we breathe faster and
more oxygen is delivered to the body's tissues.
Our facial muscles stretch and we actually burn
calories when we're laughing. In fact, the mere
act of smiling can alter your mood almost immediately.
Here are a few fun facts about laughter:
Laughter Reduces Stress: When stressed, we
produce a hormone called cortisol. Laughter can
significantly reduce cortisol levels.
Laughter Can Reduce Pain: Laughter causes
us to produce endorphins, which are natural,
pain-killing hormones.
Laughter Strengthens the Immune System: A hearty laugh decreases stress hormones
and increases production of T-cells, immune proteins and infection-fighting antibodies.
Laughter Helps the Heart: When we laugh we
increase blood flow and the function of blood
vessels, which can help prevent cardiovascular
problems.
Laughter Relaxes the Whole Body: One
good belly laugh can relieve physical tension and
relax your muscles for up to 45 minutes.
Laughter Helps You Recharge: By reducing
stress levels and increasing your energy, laughter can help you focus and achieve more.
So, not only is a good ole belly laugh a lot of fun,
it's good for you!

On Saturday morning, the Swap Shop opened at 10 AM. It was well
stocked with items donated by residents. Many of whom turned around
and carried other items home. Comments overheard included: “this is
just what I needed:, “These are just like the ones I have and needed
more”, “these are too good to leave here”, etc. We all had a great time
and hope this we be done again in the fall. Many thanks to whoever
brought the glass rose medallion sandwich plate. I have always wanted
one!
Saturday evening was the potluck in the dining room. If you are a dessert lover and you did not attend, you missed a wonderful treat!
Sunday afternoon the library committee held an open house. Those attending were treated to wonderful cookies made by the daughter of
Marge Mysorski. It was an opportunity to browse the library, have coffee
and cookies, and chat with neighbors. If you have not taken the time to
visit our library, please do so in the near future. It is well maintained,
well stocked, and a good place to relax.
Last Thursday when rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow hit us, our staff
was encouraged to leave early. Rosie stayed to fix dinner for us and then
spent the night in a guest room. We were lucky to have the wonderful
resident volunteers and Rosie to see that we were fed. Thank you!
The board met Tuesday morning. There was not a quorum in attendance
so no action could be taken, but we had great discussions. Vice President
Eric Burmeister presided. Tim Taylor told us the mixing valve on the west
side of the building was replaced, but there is more plumbing work needed. Another date was selected to shut off the water and finish the job.

Tuesday evening we were entertained by the “Sax and Brass” Band. It
was super, we had a great crowd, and hope for a return visit from them
soon.

Note from Valerius Elementary:
“Thank you so much for taking the time to collect Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels for Valerius
Elementary! The money raised from the Box Tops is used for things like field trips, assemblies, and
supplies and instructional materials for the teachers to use in their classrooms. The labels are going to
be redeemed for some items for the PE teacher to use with the kids in gym class (soccer balls, basket
balls, and stacking cups). Thanks again — they make a difference for our kids!”
The New “One Ring” Cell Phone Scam
The Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission just issued urgent warnings about the latest scam racing across the country. It begins with a call to your cell phone from
a number you don’t recognize. You don’t have time to answer because they hang up after one
ring. Naturally, you’ll be curious about who tried to reach you and wonder if it was an important
call. At this point, you should protect yourself by not returning the call! The scam starts
when you dial the number. You’ll get billed for an international call at about $20 PLUS $9 per
minute that you stay on the call. The scammer gets you to stay on the line by playing recorded
music or advertising.
The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Internet article, “”One-Ring Cell Phone Scam can
Ding your Wallet,” (http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/one-ring-cell-phone-scam-can-ding-yourwallet) warns that area codes commonly displayed on these calls are from 268, 284, 473, 664,
649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876.
If you’re a victim of this scam, contact your cell phone carrier immediately, keep a close
watch on your monthly statements and inform other persons who may be on your cell phone
plan.

EXCITING FILM SERIES COMING:
Producer Alastair Fothergill and his team, BBC, put together one of the most breathtaking explorations of the world’s oceans ever assembled. The winner of two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Cinematography Non-Fiction and Outstanding Music Composition for George Fentons’s score, The Blue
Planet: Seas of Life, is the definitive exploration of the marine world. It chronicles the mysteries of
the deep in ways never before imagined. The films are narrated by the master, David Attenborough.
This five film series will be shown, beginning the last two Sundays in March at The Reserve Home
Theater. Each lasts approximately two hours.
March 23, Ocean World and Frozen Seas: blue whale and how the sun and moon help control and
tame the ocean.
March 30, Open Oceans and The Deep: the sea bed up to five miles deep holding many of the most
spectacular predators in the ocean. Discover spectacular smoking chimneys of the hydro thermal
vents.
The last two films in this series will continue in April.
An equally dynamic series, filmed by the same producers, Planet Earth, will be shown following the
above listed series. Watch for upcoming dates in the Newsletter and Calendar in April. These films
take you to places you’ve never seen to experience sights and sounds never before captured on film.
Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of Planet Earth.
You are VERY welcome to bring along a drink &/or snack to enjoy while watching the movies!
