PRESS RELEASE
Under the patronage of Mr Olivier KAEPPELIN, Director of the Maeght Foundation (St Paul de Vence), a renewed committee was esthablished, including : Emilien CHAYIA, art collector ; Nadine GANDY, Gandy gallery’s director in Bratislava ; Josée GENSOLLEN, art collector ; Marine PAGÈS, artist and co-founder of ROVEN magazine ; Barbara POLLA,
Analix Forever gallery’s director in Geneva ; Olivier SAILLARD, Palais Galliera’s director in Paris ; Michèle SYLVANDER,
artist ; Gérard TRAQUANDI, artist.
They selected eleven galleries, six French and five international ones.
This year the Carte Blanche is given to CULTURES INTERFACE (Casablanca) and Galerie KARIMA CELESTIN (Marseille)
and the guest artist is Joseph Dadoune, on a proposal of Isabelle Bourgeois, director of the art center le Moulin de
la Vallette-du-Var.
Three publishers stands dedicated to drawing will also be there: ROVEN and COLLECTION REVUE, all offering an acute
analysis of contemporary drawing.
A new projection room will focus on animated drawing, with an inaugural selection by Karima CÉLESTIN.
Beside the Fair, an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts of the Palais Longchamp in Marseille will show both ancient
drawings, mainly of the XVIth and the XVIIIth centuries, and more contemporary ones, chosen by Gérard TRAQUANDI
among the collections of the museums of the city of Marseille.
Finally, several events will take place through the city, such as the Galleries Night, held by the network Marseille
Expos, a Drawing Season initiated by PARÉIDOLIE, including ARTEUM, the FRAC PACA, HYDRIB, PORTE-AVION and OÙ
plus the opening of new artistic proposals in different art spaces.

DIOGO PIMENTAO
Located in the Marais in Paris, the Martine Aboucaya Gallery creates connexions between contemporary art, cinema, architecture and music. For PARÉIDOLIE, she presents two Brasilian artists living in France, Angela Detanico
and Rafael Lain: they used to work together since 1996. They quickly took their place on the international artistic
stage thanks to their reflexion about conventionalrepresentations in our societies.
Respectively a linguist-semiologist and a graphist they both reflect on the use of graphic signs in the society. More
precisely, they focus on the notion of time, by creating new typographies.
Galerie UNTILthen
Previously by Yvon Lambert Gallery, Olivier Belot, Mélanie Meffrer Rondeau and Alexa Brossard have recently opened a new modular space of 500m2 dedicated to contemporary art, in the outskirts of Paris.
In the works of Diogo Pimentao, often monochrom, paper or wall’s surfaces become a metal but delicate texture.
The drawing’s technique pushes its own bounderies to the limit and developps itself in numerous forms. Production
deeply belongs to his artistic approach and abolish frontiers between drawing, sculpture and performances.

KILLOFFER
SARAH TRITZ
From the great beginning in 1999, the Anne Barrault Gallery brings its support to new but also already known artists. She has shown numerous personal exhibitions - Sarah Tritz, Guillaume Pinard, Katharina Bosse, Jochen Gerner or Catharina van Eetvelde - inviting as the same time artists like Gabriele Basilico, Yona Friedman, Roland Topor,
Robert Crumb or Chris Marker.
The Anne Barrault Gallery proposes to join together a few pieces of Killoffer, Guillaume Pinard and Sarah Tritz.
The three artists belong to different generations and come from different professional paths but they all pay to
drawing a special attention. To join these works together leads to open a dialogue between them and highlights all
their particularities.

JÉRÔME ZONDER
The Eva Hober Gallery is located in the Marais in Paris in a large exhibition space of 140m2, higlighting the work of
new artistic generation. The artists that the Gallery represents exhibite often their artpieces in famous cultural institutions. Sometimes, they succeed to make a sale to public official collections, in France and abroad. Since 2007,
texts of famous autors go with the exhibitions of the Gallery.
Moreover, the Gallery develops a production’s activity and works on new projects with other curators. Eva Hober,
the gallery’s Director, is a curator herself.
After Art Brussels 2014 and Art International Istanbul 2014, its participation to Drawing Now Paris 2015 has been
notable.
Jérôme ZONDER
Born in 1974, the artist studied in the Paris School of Fine Arts and still works in Paris.
Represented by the Eva Hober Gallery since 2004, Jérôme Zonder exploites the numerous possibilities of drawing and
develops his own, complexe and hyperrealistic language.

JC RUGGIRELLO
Faithfull to its committments over the long time, the Claudine Papillon Gallery brings artists together, who all have
a particular sensibility, a taste for poesy, irony, audacity and sometimes even for anticonformism. Created in 1989,
the Gallery is directed by Claudine and Marion Papillon, who are shareholders for seven years.
At the occasion of this first participation to PARÉIDOLIE, the Claudine Papillon Gallery shows works of four artists,
having a certain relation to Marseille.
•Cathryn Boch, laureate of the DRAWING NOW Price in 2014, will present a personal exhibition at the FRAC PACA next
september.
•Proliferation, strangeness, vitality and coherence caracterize the endless exploration of drawing of Frédérique
Loutz. In 2015, the artist will make an exhibition at the Fine Arts Institut in Paris during CHOICES.
•Big and little papers, light assemblies : François Ribes developps materials and techniques in his drawings, which
goes with the general autobiographical tone of his works.
•Finally, JC Ruggirello pushes the expected boundaries of art ; bounderies of drawing, of sculpture, of images. Most
of the time, Ruggirello queries the repetition of pattern or gesture.

JULIEN TIBERI
Guillaume Dégé lives in Strasbourg where he teaches at the School of Decorative Arts. As a collector, he gots a significant library which nourishes his practice of drawing and exists in his pieces through his collages. Old engraving
mingles with coloured pencils in order to produce at once surrealist and delightful cadaver. As a contributor to the
French newspaper Le Monde, he signs numerous pictures of the Opéra Comique from 2012 to 2014.
Julien Tiberi get to personal exhibitions in 2012 and 2014 at the Semiose Gallery, which were a great success with
the private collectors, the public and the institutions. In 2012 and 2013, he presented an exhibition at the Parisian Palais de Tokyo, at the National Plastic Art Center in Bruxelles,at the Villa du Parc and during the International
Contemporary Art Fair of Paris. His works will be shown in summer 2015 in a collective exhibition in Athens, curated

VINCENT BROQUAIRE
CLÉMENT VALLA
Convinced that we entered in a digital period, where digital technologies really open the possibilities of world representation, Xpo Gallery comments this new area where reality disappear behind the virtual world.
Since its opening in 2012, the gallery transcends the white cube and becomes a research’s laboratory, adapted to
fusion of real and virtual worlds. The gallery is building a long-term relationship with the new generation of interational artists, always more exigeant, and collaborates with them from the great beginning of their carreer and stepby-step to support their reflexions. XPO Gallery doesn’t defend the digital art but promotes the contemporary art
at the time of digital evolutions.
Both artists selected for PAREIDOLIE, Clément Valla and Vincent Broquaire, were born at the digital age. They question the influence of digital technologies on drawing.
Clément Valla relies upon processes of repetition and copy. Each Seed drawing is an aggregate of a lot of forms, all
d’une multiplicité de formes, all copies of other ones.
Drawings of Vincent Broquaire usually speak about relations between nature and new technologies, with people
at the centre, acting as main adjudicator. Landscapes have a key-role in his work. Thus, the artist builds a critical
vision, sustained by irony and poetry.

SHAUN GLADWELL
JULIEN SERVE
Created in 1991, the Analix Forever Gallery is specialized in contemporary art, with a focus on young artists. Analix
Forever likes art and people who like art. Culture is ubiquitous ; Analix Forever is nomad. She wants authenticity and
promotes liberty. The gallery shows a preference for work-in-progress and evolving works ; she welcomes experimentation, polymorphism, works in progress. Analix Forever appreciates in particular video, drawing, poetry and
unusual pieces.
For PAREIDOLIE 2015, the gallery proposes a two-voice exhibition and a third as well.
Mounir Fatmi and Shaun Gladwell will show their drawings on exhibition panels; regarding Julien Serve will present
his drawing books, on a table or in a display case.
Mounir Fatmi has always worked on «cultural graft». That means the only way to save humanity. Together. A bilateral graft. This idea of black graft on white and white graft on black, Mounir Fatmi broke it down into several ways
from the masterpiece called the “Jambe noire de l’ange” ( the black leg of the angel).
Shaun Gladwell is an artist of bodies. There is no discipline that he doesn’t know. Just like Mounir Fatmi, Shaun
Gladwell is above all known for his videos and his performances, while he is also a regular but still secret drawer. For
him as for Fatmi, drawing is founding, liberating and creative.
Julien Serve draws. Drawing allows him to face the world, sometimes like an obsession. The pencil is the ultimate
weapon against despair, against loss and dereliction. The pencil helps him day by day to transform anxiety into
creativity, derision and pleasure. Drawing books mirror the soul of the drawer.

PETER MARKLI
PIER VITTORIO AURELI
Betts Project is a London-based gallery specialising in architectural drawings. Founded in 2014 by Marie Coulon,
the gallery looks to introduce both a specialist audience and wider public to new ways of discovering architecture
through the exhibition and promotion of its drawings. Typically these images are not the technical illustrations of
a building’s design or construction, but more personal and often more artful artifacts generated by architects as a
way to stimulate ideas, reveal obsessions or simply as a form of intellectual diversion.
Two such bodies of work presented at PARÉIDOLIE are firstly drawings by the Swiss architect Peter Märkli – a series
of freehand A4 studies described by Märkli as a reservoir of forms from which he then proceeds with a design.
The second are by the Italian architect and educator Pier Vittorio Aureli. Titled ‘The Marriage of Reason and Squalor’,
the works – similarly sized and hand-drawn, but according to a much more precise visual system – explore a seeming multitude of geometric variables developing out of a simple square, which paradoxically look to challenge the
very same principles of composition from which they emerge.

etHALL is a public space in the city center of Barcelona, in the popular district of Raval. Focused on drawing, etHALL
wants that public and contemporary art move closer to each other. The programming pays attention both to current
artistic productions and to productions from edition and cartoons.
The preliminary project thought for PAREIDOLIE 2015 is including pieces of four different authors, linked to the
gallery: Sinéad Spelman (Irland 1978), Martin Vitaliti (Argentina1977), Patricio Vélez (Equator 1945) and Inken
Reinert (Germany 1965).
The proposal looks like a gradient, between figuration and abstraction. It highlights the unclear boundary which
separates them and emphasizes the complex relation between concept and formalizing.

In 1992, her interest in «New Europe» and its rebirth after the fall of the Berlin wall inspired her to open in Prague
the first private space after communism. She regularly organized exhibitions and publications with artists including
Nan Goldin, Lawrence Wiener, Joseph Grigely, Douglas Gordon, Matali Crasset, Jochen Gerz, Jonas Mekas and Wim
Delvoye and others, who exhibited for the first time in this territory. Among many others, the Czech Vaclav Stratil
and Jiri David joined her gallery.
In 2005, Gandy moved to Bratislava, Slovakia, in order to further develop her relationship with artists working in
the countries of the former Soviet Union, including Danica Dakic, Zbynek Baladran, Jana Zelibskà, Babi Badalov, and
others.
Through her gallery and the artists that she exhibits, Nadine Gandy interrogates several themes including the body,
identity, insecurity, self determination, migration and transformation. Additionally, she alludes to problems arising
from intercultural and intercommunity.

The vocation of Kulte Gallery is to survey the relevance of an ever-evolving African art history : the gallery defines
its forms, its challenges and its bounderies in the current context of globalization. That is also an open-minded
structure, offering the possibility to Morrocan people to discover internationally reknowed artists.
The Gallery organises three or four exhibitions per year, in addition to its publishing and incentive activities.
The history of art has a key-role in the building identity of everyone: books allow to keep the memory of our common
history. That is why KULTE Editions realizes an archiving of thoughts and forms in order to nourrish and understand
the contemporary scene.
Finally, concerts, performances, lectures, conferences open a dialogue between the arts and introduce a transversal approach of them.

August, Sunday the 30th at 2pm
Baptiste Brunello creates a new basis of expressions thanks to serial art realisations, video projections, instrumental compositions and anecdotal reflexions. That leads first to chaos and confusion, then to cristallization through
performances.
His project his self-sustaining, updating regularly to avoid rigidity. It is made of the numerous experiments, which
are necessary to its writing. Coincidences, research, approximations... guide the reflexion of Baptiste Brunello for
feeding his work.

CULTURES INTERFACE (MAROC)
INVITE MUSTAPHA AKRIM
As well as using its own gallery walls in Casablanca Morocco, CulturesInterface has resolved to become an itinerant gallery travelling throughout Africa, Europe and the Americas. This concept allows it to provide a multitude of services adapted
to various places and art works. Through its mobility and flexibility, CulturesInterface participates at biennales and fairs
as well as it collaborates with international structures and art galleries having common goals.
Mustapha Akrim’s drawings presented during PARÉIDOLIE’s second edition, represent children working in cities or in rural
areas. By scratching the drawings on carbon paper, and overlaying two or three drawings on the same sheet of carbon,
the artist reinforces the problem of children at work.
In some drawings, Akrim also uses specific articles from the Moroccan Constitution in order to shed light on these existing
societal issues.
In his global work, Akrim deals with issues of labor and lack of opportunity within his home country, in particular problems
of unemployment, poor education, and a need for freedom of speech.
Excerpts from the Article 32 of the 2011 Moroccan Constitution used in Akrim’s drawings :

their family situation.

GALERIE KARIMA CÉLESTIN (MARSEILLE)
INVITES MASSINISSA SELMANI
Karima Celestin Gallery is like Karima Celestin herself. A strong identity shaped by a mixture of sobriety, requirement and
commitment.
An identical interest for pure, often radical forms will be found in the work of the artists she represents linked with history,
langage, affect and humanity. Through about fifteen exhibitions in three years, the gallery has asserted its artistic line,
with a special attention for drawing and video, medium the gallerist likes most.
In June 2015, Karima Celestin will leave the immaculate space of the Senac Street in Marseille in order to concentrate on
her new project, more evidently focused on video and to find a new appropriate place.
MASSINISSA SELMANI
Massinissa Selmani’s works show an extreme simplicity. They mix images and drawings or short videos in which one
we can find humor, irony and even sometimes a sense of rebellion. The artist draws and films with discretion, silently.
He distrusts grandiloquence of language and answers with measured and still gestures. This optimal use of resources is
a choice : against the mediatic violence, the ascendancy of images, he deliberately chooses the fragile making and the
discretion of the sign. Against voluntarism and assertion, he prefers innocence and sobriety.
“Such an artistic posture is rare; it’s an experimentation of the thought by the simplicity of the drawing”. Jérôme DIACRE

THE VIDEOGRAPHIC DRAWING
A PROGRAMMING OF KARIMA CÉLESTIN (MARSEILLE)
Drawing and video are Karima Celestin’ favorite medium. Since november 2014, she shifts to even more video, of which
she decides to explore every shape and way of expression. She specializes in video in order to offer the public an overall
view of that medium.
Since, she proposed four curatorial exhibitions dedicated to video as well as hors-les-murs projections, more and more
interested in that medium of expression, still about to write its own story.
In june 2015, Karima Celestin will leave the space of the Senac Street in Marseille in order to concentrate on her new project, and find the best place for it to leave and grow. From now on, she will focus on video and, faithfull to her commitment
towards the artists, she will continue to support their projects from the very beginnings, and be a production and promotion partner on an international scale.
Karima Celestin is developing a new and innovative way of doing her job, more adequate to the new economic rules, but
also in line with the needs and the characteristics of the video medium in terms of traffic and reproducibility, inherent to
the virtual reality of the medium.

ARTIST
Invited by the selection’s committee of PARÉIDOLIE
On a proposal of Isabelle Bourgeois.
Display cases
Joseph Dadoune got known in the West and in the Middle East in the early 2000s thanks to outstanding video installations and an original photography.
In addition to his usual media, Joseph Dadoune always developped a daily and intimist drawing practice, considering it as something personal, without any public statut. Over one hundred black pastel drawings have never been
shown. Uprooted plants, deserts, home without windows...These artpieces will be shown for the very first time
during PARÉIDOLIE, the International Contemporary Drawing Fair of Marseille, on August 29 & 30th 2015.

PUBLIC OPENING ON AUGUST, FRIDAY 28TH AT 12AM
Exhibition from August, Friday the 28th to October, Saturday 31st 2015
Lina Jabbour’s work always questioned notions of journey and wandering. Her first works refered to a highly politicized
identity discourse, evolving step by step into a new dreamlike aesthetic. As if the question of the strangers’ status
came to substitute to the strange things’ question.
In her last installations, she favoured the practice of drawing over the practice of wall paiting and used to play more
and more with the exhibition. Lina’s installations question the visitor’s point-of-view, modify the spaces and bring the
viewer into a more intimate register.
At the occasion of her exhibition at the Galerie du 5ème, Lina Jabbour proposes Ligne de flottaison. That means a line,
which draws the water level on the vessel’s hull, making a separation between the submerged and the emerged parts
of it. This title refers to the notion of the line, to the drawing’s one and to the notion of a suspended time. Time is
stretching notably in the drawing’s process with the use of pencils. As a whole, that evokes the idea of landscapes,
turning gradually into an abstraction of forms.

An artist residency has been set up in the district of Castellanne in Marseille thanks to HYDRIB, and in partnership
with the Community and Cultural Center of the suburb. That’s a real immersion within this territory for an entire
year.
À mi-chemin #2 proposes an artistic approach of this immersion, through its restitution. Drawings, photographs
and acoustic installations mirror to the workshops developped in the suburb. Inhabitants are the main topic of
these workshops and in the same time their leading actors.

Already in 2014, the Gallery of the Château de Servières made a focus on the contemporary drawing, welcoming the
two first times of an exhibition cycle called «À l’heure du dessin».
The gallery pursues its initiative this year with the third time of the cycle, which will occur at the autumn 2015. The
exhibition will highlight three duos, as a continuation of PAREIDOLIE and initiate a drawing season which will continue
over several months. Thus, three artists from the territory will welcome three artists living in other regions. The idea
is to refresh year after year this crucial time of the cultural reentry in Marseille and to put the all city into the drawing
age, a multifacetted booming medium.

VACANCES BLEUES
25 YEARS FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
French hôtel group based in Marseille, VACANCES BLEUES has been actively supporting contemporary arts for the
past 25 years by organizing young artists exhibitions or collaborating with the major cultural events of the town
and around.
PAREIDOLIE is one of those major events that VACANCES BLEUES is proud to sponsor since its very first edition last
year! As it is clearly a chance to improve the focus on our city at that period of the year by inviting prestigious galleries, artists and art collectors to discover our mediterranean territory.

AFTER MORE THAN 10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, MÉCÈNES DU SUD, A COLLECTIVE ABOUT FORTY FIRMS FROM AIX-MARSEILLE, STRENGTHENS ITS ACTION INTO VISUAL ARTS IN ORDER TO POSITION ITSELF AS A KEY-PARTNER FOR THE AMBITIOUS PROJECTS OF ITS TERRITORY.
Mécènes du Sud invites this year Anne-Valérie GASC on a sculptural stand presenting a set of works « Feu - Principe
de contradiction » which refers to the destruction of the ten towers, called «Democraty» in the Minguettes. The
collective has supported Art-O-Rama, the International Contemporary Art Fair, from its beginnings in 2007 with an
intensified collaboration since 2012 with the setting up of a dedicated stand, presenting an artist sustained by the
collective in his/her projects: previously, Moussa Sarr in 2013 and Alexander Schellow in 2014.
According to the same line of sponsoring of ambitious events, Mécènes du Sud gives its strong support since its
first edition 2014 to the International Contemporary Drawing Fair, PARÉIDOLIE, for which it renews its support in
2015.
The members of Mécènes du Sud have made a committment to sustain the dynamism of 2013, allowed by the
regular creation of new exhibitions places: thus, they co produce each year an important exhibition. In 2015, both
Mécènes du Sud and the Friche la Belle de Mai invite GILLES BARBIER for a personal exhibition named « Echo Système » which will open on August 28th. Last year, they were involved in the monographic exhibition of Marie Reinert
at the FRAC Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur.
Mécènes du Sud deepens this year its networks of patrons in Aix-en-Provence and joins « NOUVEAUX REGARDS », a
platform of events offered to a few young artists from the Art School, which will take place next autumn including
three sites : the Atelier Cézanne, the Pavillon Vendôme and the 3bisF.

OLGAJEANNE
Olgajeanne is a jewelry & accessories label created in 2011. Its jewels are based on unique textile handcrafting techniques combined with innovating & contemporary design.
Sophie first worked in luxury prêt-à-porter studios such as Lanvin, where she experimented on textile embellishment. She
naturally decided to keep on with her favourite material, the textile, when launching her own jewelry label.
Olgajeanne collections mainly draw their inspiration from art, design & architecture. The designer is as well influenced
by colours and textures in nature that is amazingly surrounding the city of Marseille where she lives. Her curiosity feels
also attracted with traditionnal handcrafting skills, such as weaving, paper folding or basketry, and somehow her creation
borrows from menswear, medals & military ornaments codes.
With their pure, simple lines, Olgajeanne’s pieces can dress up or transform one’s outfit, in a strong yet refined style.
All jewels are carefully handcrafted at Olgajeanne’s studio in Marseille, using premium quality materials.
As a partner of PARÉIDOLIE, Olga Jeanne signs a numbered and limited edition of bracelets, on the theme of the visual
identity of the Fair. The line is spontaneous, irregular, artisanal and artistic. As a confrontation with the material as close
as possible to the drawing’s writing.

MEDIAS
ROVEN ÉDITIONS is a partner of PARÉIDOLIE, the International Contemporary Drawing Fair in Marseille.
ROVEN EDITIONS
• Created in 2009, Roven is an associative publishing house, which pblishes ROVEN, a critical revue on contemporary
drawing, and critical and monographic volumes as well. Roven éditions make a catalogue with about a dozen of titles.
•ROVEN, CRITICAL REVUE ON CONTEMPORARY DRAWING • Since its beginnings in 2009, Roven is the first critical revue
dedicated to contemporary drawing. It talks about the numerous practices of the drawing medium, which is booming on
the international artistic market. Indeed, drawing is very represented in the institutions and the sometimes specialized
galleries and is the subject of many collections and events (thematic exhibitions, fairs a.s.o...).
As an autonomous piece of art or as an etap in the creative process, drawing is a laboratory of creation, closely linked to all
the disciplines and all the materials. The Roven Revue is born from the desire to sustain the vivacity of the contemporary
drawing in a critical perspective. It highlights how people practice drawing, how they use it, they divert it, they reference
it, in order to boost debates about this medium and widely about the contemporary art. The editorial choice is naturally
turned to the contemporary art. However, the boundary with press’, cartoon’s, illustration’s, architecture’s, graphism’s
drawings is think, always questioned, challenged. A dialogue is open with all these forms.
The revue proposes in different sections critical monographic and thematic texts, topics about drawing, a portfolio, interviews and a part for new creations. The artists are chosen for the interest of their practice regarding the current issues
of drawing, but all of them don’t practice it necessarily. They don’t have never the same nationality nor the same level of
career. A particular attention is given to the artists, whose the work isn’t the subject of criticism in France yet.
• DIFFUSION / DISTRIBUTION The revue and books are mainly sold in
big bookshops and in specialist bookshop (museums, art centers,
FRAC, galleries, cultural bookshops, associative places, a.s.o.). Roven
éditions is sold and distributed by Les Presses du Réel in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Swiss and by Idea Books for the international distribution.http://www.lespressesdureel.com
• ROVEN : MEDIA OF CREATION Roven is also thought as an opened media of creation for the artists in order that they directly play an editorial
role on it, with drawings, texts, or other proposals. The aim is to develop this aspect on and out of the revue .
The «Multiples»: Furthermore, the revue produces numbered and
limited editions of works, signed by the artists themselves. The collection is composed today of four masterpieces of Marcelline Delbecq,
Diogo Pimentão, Paul van der Eerden and Camille Henrot.
