EZread™ Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards
EZread™ Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards
Congratulations on your purchase of EZread™
Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards, a versatile set that
helps primary students master important sight words
and common phrases.
Objective
To read common Dolch word phrases fluently
and automatically.
Common Core State Standards
Read common high-frequency words by sight.
Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly
spelled words.
This Really Good Stuff® product includes:
• 104 two-sided flash cards
• This Really Good Stuff® Teaching Guide
Using flash card activities, you can provide your individual
or small group of emergent readers the repetitive
practice they need to master sight words and short
phrases. This helps students recognize some of the most
frequently occurring words automatically by sight, rather
than by sounding out letter sounds that they are still
learning.
Similar practice with reading common phrases is a great
way to improve on the sight word knowledge base and to
build reading fluency. Because most sight words do not
stimulate a visual image in the mind of the reader,
practicing them in common phrases helps students
attach meaning and context to otherwise abstract
words. The repeated contextualized exposure to sight
words allows you to reach all readers, especially those
struggling with word recognition or learning English.
Managing the EZread™ Primer Dolch Word
Phrase Cards
• Should you need this or any other Really Good Stuff®
Teaching Guides, download them from our Web site at
www.reallygoodstuff.com.
• Keep the cards organized in numerical order. Each Dolch
word in the phrase is highlighted and for each word
there are 4 different phrases. The phrases are on a ring
that can be easily opened to take out cards if you
would like.
• Record phrases that challenge students to keep
track of their progress and to aid in assessment.
(See reproducible.)
• Storing the flash cards in baggies or on separate rings
will allow you to access them easily during a lesson or
when you want to place a selection of cards in a
learning center.
Introducing Sight Words or Phrases
1. Select a set of phrases for a particular
Dolch word.
2. Hold up each Dolch Word Phrase Card. Have the
student read it aloud. Observe how long it takes
for the student to read each word correctly.
3. Set aside or note those phrases that the student
cannot read.
4. Mix up the remaining cards and again display them
one at a time, increasing the pace slightly as you
hold them up for the student.
5. Repeat until the student is able to read the words
automatically.
6. Once the student knows all of the words in the set,
challenge the student to use each phrase correctly
in a sentence.
7. Study the words and phrases further and in context
using the activities on the following page.
The words chosen for the EZread™ Primer Dolch Word
Phrase Cards are taken only from the Primer Dolch word
list or are words that are easily decodable. The phrases
themselves are common phrases that students will
encounter many times in their reading. For each Dolch
word there are 4 common phrases included.

Activities for Further Practice
Dolch Word Card Cut-Apart
Select a sight word phrase and write it onto an index
card in large print. Have the student read it and then
cut up the phrase into words. Then ask the student to
put the words back into the correct order of the phrase.
Concentration
Select at least eight phrases and write each on two
cards. Mix up the cards and place them face down in
rows. Have two to four students take turns turning over
two cards at a time, trying to find a match. When a
student gets a matched pair, he or she gets to keep the
pair. If not, the cards go back to their original positions,
and the turn is over. The game is over when all the cards
have been matched. The winner is the player with the
most pairs.
Phrase Hunt
Have students hunt for phrases in the context of reading
materials, classroom labeling, and sentences you display
for them. Or have them find the word or phrase on the
board, and then come up and point to it.
Use It in Context
Use the phrases in sentences as you go. Then challenge
the student to do the same. The sentences can be
simple as long as they make sense. Choose a sentence
for a phrase, and have the student read the sentence
back to you and then copy it in his or her notebook.

the turn is over. The game is over when
all the cards have been matched. The winner
is the player with the most pairs.
Phrase and Short Sentence Hunt
Have students hunt for phrases and
short sentences in the context of reading
materials, classroom labeling, and
sentences you display for them.
Phrase Vs. Sentence
It is important students understand the
difference between a phrase and short
sentence. Point out that a phrase is a
partial thought that can be completed in
order to make it a sentence. As students
practice reading, have them complete
phrases, turning them into sentences.
Use It in Context
Use the phrases in sentences as you go.
Then challenge the student to do the
same. The sentences can be simple as
long as they make sense.
